phil anderson, malvern star and spr

as part of the promotion of the malvern star range of oppy bikes, phil anderson will be joining us for a hills ride this sunday 28th march.

for those that are new to cycling, phil represented the generation of cycling pioneers that made in-roads for other aussies to race in europe.  he became the first non-european to wear the yellow jersey in the tour de france and went on to wear it 11 times.  up until cadel’s recent success at the tour, phil was the highest place aussie with a fifth overall in both 1982 and 1985.  he also went on to win the white jersey of the best young rider in 1982.

as part of the promotion of the oppy bikes, there will be 6 bikes (2 small, 2 medium, 2 large) available for any club member (must have a cycling australia licence for insurance reasons) to test ride on the day.  send me an email and i will let the malvern star guys know what size you need.  all you need to do is turn up a little earlier so that they can swap your pedals over and they will look after your bike while you are away.

i will probably map out a new course for this day just to make sure that we get a good run even if we have a large turn out.  this may be a good chance for you to test yourself against a former tour de france climber and it also may be a good chance for that hill climb time to be demolished.

  1. Are Liggett and Sherwin running the commentary? Will there be a chopper on Col De Kalamunder? We should all adhere to the eurocyclist code this Sunday

  2. Looks like the word is already out guys. Just had a colleague come up to me and asking if I’m going to be riding with Phil this weekend! Apparently he got an email from his mates telling him and making plans to come out.

Peter – might want to get a polic escort organised!!!

  3. Well as long as he doesnt mind waiting for slow coach lil over here to get up the hills thats all good! Maybe he can come back down the hill and draft me up!!

  4. Which models are they bringing? Tell ’em to bring an XS bike in an Opppy C5-Pro. Lots of women and me around would be keen to try a small bike, especially as the geometry is a little different (tall headtube of 135mm and seat angle of 74 deg)

  5. Any chance that we could ride somewhere up the Swan Valley (perhaps Haddrill Rd/Weir Rd across to Boulonnais) and back some way that doesn’t include Mundaring Weir Rd? Fame is so fleeting.

  6. NOOOO im in melbourne!! Couldn’t he wait just one more week!?
    Oh well…
    Say hi for me 🙂

  7. perhaps we need a volunteer film crew for this…

    1 x motor bike,
    1 x cam,
    1 x TDF horn

    …and you’re in business.

think it would make for cool SPR marketing material.
i would donate my movie camera – but it’s in Chile (with m-inlaw).
