I just wanted to put up a post to see if there are any juniors out there amongst the members families… I have a young cousin who is 10 years old and looking to do some group riding. She has been doing the Wheat-Bix triathalon stuff and wants to keep up the riding part of it. Her Mum thiks she could do about 20km at 20 km/hr. Her main concern is just how comfortable the kiddies are riding on the road.
So are there any parents out there with kids sleeping in on Saturday mornings?
And just a caveat on this post – I am not sure what needs to be done to get this off the ground. I assume a junior group would need to be chaperoned by two parents, have a stable route so people don’t get lost, and would need really cool mini-sized spr kits.
I don’t think it is a requirement to have people involved with working with children clearances, but I would assume its preferable. We may also want to have a certified coach on board in the future too. Although, again, I don’t think these are requirements, just preferences. No reason we couldn’t get started without one though.
So – lets get the conversation started…..
you don’t need a working with children clearance if one of your kids is in the group. however, until we get a qualified coach, i think we need to say that all kids must be chaperoned by their own parent/family member. i think we open ourselves up to trouble if we agree to take juniors out without family supervision.
we can easily map out a safe course, keep off the main roads and use some bike paths.
My 9 year old daughter is very keen on cycling and did the 30 km of the HBF this year at 20km/hr. Only has a mountain bike at the moment but I could be persuaded to look at a roadie for her.
I would happily tag along on a kids ride as long as they don’t smash me.
I reckon the Shelly route would be safe enough??? Not a lot of car traffic along there.
Hey! Stop stealing all my next-gen super NDCC riders that I have been recruiting 😀
Haha, in all seriousness but, I’m sure these kids will quickly want more than just a saturday morning? NDCC does a skills based/interval based session on a Wednesday night. I’m sure they’d be welcome to be involved if they wanted some extra? Just a thought at least, though it might be a bit far for some of you south-of-the-river’ers (and after a few sessions you would need a license, even if it’s just recreational and linked to SPR, but the insurance it comes with is desirable from a club perspective when riding around a quiet little industrial circuit with other kids).
Gimme a yell if your interested.
Could we make it a rule that no “kid” is ever allowed to pass an “adult” (even if they offer to give us a push)? Its bad enough at the moment having Jamie flying past without adding insult to injury when a 12 year old waltzes by 🙂
Yep. I have a 10 yr old who loves her riding. I bought her first roadie for her last year. Would definitely be there on Saturday mornings and happy to ride with them. I even have my ‘Working with Children’ card AND WA Police clearance (apparently I looked a bit dodgey when I went in for the WWC photo so they double checked!!! 😉
trying to persuade my ‘Minster for Safety’…putting the 9 1/2 old on the road could be a bit of a hard sell.
will it be a 7.00 AM start in same place?
snuggles – i have no idea – would up to you parents to organise. I would have assumed so. However if you are doing an hour ride then maybe start it at 8?
haha meghan i think im barely ever flying past anyone, if anything most of the time im hanging on for dear life and am cursing my legs which seem to be slowly and painfully dying 😛
