2012 Volunteer Award…and the winner is…

….Len Carmel!

Well, the Award didn’t go to Pete, but the breakfast was great and did get to see what an amazing array of groups and people there are out there in our local community doing largely un-thanked work for the benefit of the majority.

The awards were broken into 3 categories by age group, <18; 18 – 25; >25. The five criteria used to determine the winners were the actual activity the volunteer contributed to, their time doing it, the significance of their personal contribution, the added value they brought to the task and indications of them going above and beyond what would normally be expected of a volunteer within their normal remit.

In Pete’s category there were 19 nominees from a range of different organisations. South Perth Bridge Club, Como Uniting Church, SP Lions, SP P&C, SP Cricket Club, SPOCSI, Collier Park Hostel, Manning Tennis Association, PCYC, New Wesley Play Group, SP Home Reader Service, Collin Street Community Group, McDougall Park Community Garden, and of course, South Perth Cycle Club (Le Rouleurs!).

The winner, Mr Len Carmel, has contributed 42 years of his life to the South Perth Lions Club. He has been the Cake and Mint Chairman, distributed Lions Cakes throughout the local community, contributed to the organization of the Lions Youth Band and annual Kids of Courage activities. He’s currently working to establish a Men’s Shed in Manning and organizes the Lions Christmas Carols every year – stiff, but worthy competition for Our Pete….oh, and Len’s an ex pro jockey, so in his day he’d probably have given us ALL a run for our money up Welshpool Road!

Anyway, as a I say, the brekky was great, and I even got some tips on installing my home reticulation from the retired Total Eden designer I sat next to – can’t beat that!
