so i was a bit unimpressed today at mapmyrides conversion of the ride route and how poorly it transferred over to the garmin. when we headed through whiteman park, the course straightlined across the park and jumped over the wiggly roads. it meant that main 1 missed a number of turns and we left the park too early.
as there are a lot of people using garmin devices now, i am considering moving over to the garmin mapping function. this also makes it much easier to upload the map as you just plug in your device and then click the “send to device” icon. if we do go down this route, i will also rename the maps with the name first, then kms, then day so that when it lists on the garmin, it is easier to know which map it is. (i.e whiteman park 50.4km spr saturday). to upload the map, click on the “view details” link below the elevation profile.
the new map style is shown below. all feedback greatly appreciated.
Still does not show the cattle!
great idea happy to have a trail
I had issues w/ the Garmin today as well, it was jumping all over the place, particularly around the Whiteman Park area (Thanks Garmin….just when we needed you most!)
The new site / map looks good, but above all, its very easy to use, so I reckon more people will use the map feature on the 500 as well.
Go ahead I say
cheers
Theres a map feature on my 500? honestly i have never seen it!
One click upload, Winner!
easy and intuitive too
Happy to give the Garmin site a try, I had been having problems downloading some of the rides.
Cheers
The Garmin connect mapping site works fine for me, as I already use it for my own courses.
Is there a way to have it display the embedded maps with metric distances?
To answer my own question, if you login to your garmin connect account and have metric as your default, it will display the embedded map accordingly.
Yes please great idea, I still have to manually write the route onto Garmin connect before uploading to my 800, as my computer ( yes me i know) refuses to convert to gpx files.
Having said that, it did mean I get a good idea how the route was, rather than just following the prompts. However in doing it manually it didn’t miss a turn yesterday.
Yep, that works for me.
Yeah I say move. I always use gpsie (something like that) to convert and had the same issue. The open street maps map was spot on but the course within whitemans was all over the shop.
Quest is can you plan the maps in Garmin connect or do you have to go ride or drive them first?
It’s a great idea, judging by the amount of ‘beep-borps’ (Garmin sound) that you hear when an SPR ride starts.
I’ve been (occasionally) manually making Saturday’s route into Garmin format and posting it in the comments. Wasn’t sure if anyone was using it though…
Just be aware that the Edge 500 (maybe others too?) has a file name limitation of 13 characters. You can name the files longer, but you will only see the first 13 characters (a space is a character too) on the screen of the device.
So in the example above, you would see: ‘whiteman park’ on the device, when choosing which course to follow. I have been naming the files something like ‘whtmn prk 50.4 spr sat’. So on the device it shows ‘whtmn prk 50.’ But if you are viewing on a computer, you see the whole file name.
Here are some of the rides I have already done (all Sat rides):

http://connect.garmin.com/course/2966336 (Hale and ridge road 50.77km)

http://connect.garmin.com/course/2876448 (Maddington 52.11km)

http://connect.garmin.com/course/2630145 (Canningvale Welshpool 49.86km)
http://connect.garmin.com/course/2588406 (Lennie Hills 48.57km)

And a Sunday Hills ride:

Happy to help with converting more rides. They have to be done manually, as you don’t seem to be able to import GPX files into Garmin connect for use as garmin ‘courses’.
Creating your courses is very similar to map my ride. Download the Garmin smart phone app if you are not using a Garmin already.
is there a way to change the pace / speed in case you want to use the virtual partner feature?
as i am remapping them all, i am setting the pace to 30km/hr.
Create your own account if you haven’t already. Save the new course to your courses and then you will be able to edit the course. From there you should be able to adjust the pace. It can be done whether it be in the edit or your settings.
great idea Pete… Just do it.
