you have probably all seen those little picture series on facebook, etc about different professions showing – what i think i do, what my parents think i do, what the public thinks i do, etc, etc.
well what do we do as a club??? i would like to think that we operate a bit differently to other groups and would like to think that our core values actually mean something to people. and i suppose, even more so, i would like to think that what the public sees actually reflects that. well i received an email the other day from someone that was inquiring about the club. here is an excerpt –
I’ve been looking for a regular riding group to join when I came across your your club a few weeks back. I must commend your members as during the RAC Mandurah to Perth ride recently. I was 3 back on the inside from the lead in a group of probably 40 people that was nearly 48 kilometres (just passed Russell Rd) into the ride averaging 39km/h when there was a fall of nine people. I managed to stay up as I saw it unfolding, but unfortunately there were two gentlemen who left in a ambulance, one with a dislocated should and the other with a suspected broken hip.
At one stage there would’ve been 10 SPR members that had pulled over to assist, whether it be signalling traffic around the fallen or tending to the people who fell. What else made me look up SPR was not only did those people stop but there was also numerous people in SPR club colours slow down and offer assistance before being thanked and told keep riding as we’re “all good”.
i would just like to thank those club members that were involved with this particular incident for such a selfless display that obviously impressed upon few people. this may just seem like a natural thing to do, but in a lot of groups it is every man for himself. that little bit of encouragement, or offer of assistance goes a long way.
