For something a little different, we will be kicking off the inaugural Velo Solo Spring Classic to be held on Saturday 30 August. The Velo Solo Spring Classic is open to anyone who rides a single speed bicycle, be it a track bike, fixie or free hub single speed. The only requirement being you must have only 1 gear.
We will be starting with the normal Saturday group at 7.00am at the Coode Street car park and will finish at the Dome. We will be using the route around the river below, which has the majority of the hills removed. There will still be a few climbs. However, these are minimal and we will slow down after each climb for a regroup.
The group pace will be dictated by the slowest rider and the group will wait for all riders. There will be one optional intermediary sprint point at Port Beach to see who can spin the fastest.
If we can come up with some categories and judging criteria there may even be an award for the best bike.
So now that you have some notice, get your Velo Solo cleaned and polished, start scouring Gumtree for a Velo Solo or get out the tools and remove those superfluous 9 or 10 cogs.

That sounds like a laugh. Count me in.
Likewise, good excuse to get a fixie!
Hipster beards and flannel is a must.
I am in the process of negotiating a substantial winners purse for the event. I happened to come across this nice Nigerian man via a random email. Who it seems has a suitcase full of these…
I just need to pay his bank fees. 🙂
can we not post pics?
these then

I’m in.
I went to my favourite currency converted and worked out that a AUD $20 prize is ZIM$6711 which sounds pretty good. (although they did add that the currency has been suspended indefinitely. But if Clint wants to put up ZIM$100 trillion I will probably change the gearing on my fixie to have a crack at it. The prize money would have to be more than it cost to change the gearing (wouldn’t it?).
I’ll ramp up the negotiations with my man in Nigeria, and see if he is interested in the events naming rights. In which case we might be able to arrange for all finishers to receive Zim100,000,000,000,000.
Maybe we can have a bonus for the Port Beach intermediary sprint. So I’m sure that will pay for gear change. Perhaps try and cover your exchange rate risk by sourcing a cog out of Zimbabwe.
I received a shiny 17t cog in the mail this week, so I’m going to see how I go with the new ratio. I have been riding home (west perth to Bicton) on my SS and doing some secret training via the western suburbs. the Iona climb hurst a bit but PLC one is ok, its short at least. I’ll see how I go minus a tooth though.
may have another event for you guys. received this message the other day. let me know and i can forward your emails to them.
“Hi Pete, would you know 3 spr fixie fanatics who’d be up for the challenge of flying the spr flag at the 4th running of our Strada Rossa. Gravel, Fixies 2 stage handicap “race” from Perth to York. With a social event on a prop outside York. Sat 11 Oct”
That sounds brutal :O
