so i was driving home through north perth on tuesday night and came across a cyclist commuting home. the road was not that wide and there were cars parked on one side and a centre strip on the other. i sat behind her for a while waiting for an opportunity to pass. there was a section where there were no parked cars for about 50m or so and i fully expected her to pull in to make room. nope, she stayed her line and kept riding. i sat there until the centre strip disappeared before maneuvering around to pass. now, while i was behind, i actually contemplated giving a little toot of the horn just to say, you know, kind of move over a bit. however, i put myself in the cyclist position and thought that i really hate it when people do that to me. at the end of the day, she was doing nothing wrong, so who was i to say that my commute was more important than hers. anyway, we all ride bikes and pretty much all of us drive cars as well. in a shared road situation, you need to be aware of both parties and be respectful of each other. that doesn’t mean that cyclist should just get out of cars way, or cars try to barge through, it means that if you are in a car you wait till it is safe to pass, and if you are on a bike, if you can make space you should do so. this isn’t about who is right or who has rights, but just looking out for each other. after all, most of us have been in both situations and we know how we would like to be treated.

thank you – sometimes someone does something to help you and you may want others to know what a help they have been. we are starting a regular blog post to allow people to do just that. if someone has helped you change a tyre, given you a draft back to the group, or a helping hand to push you up a hill, let the rest of the club know what an impact that person has made on your ride. see the previous post for more details and to leave a message.
spr club champion – with only 2 races left on the club championship there are some clear leaders who have consistently gathered points in each race. the next race in the championship will be pickering brook race #3 and then the final will be pinjarra classic. see the current leaderboard to find out just where you sit in the club championships.
