so there was an interesting article on the watoday website that i came across yesterday. it had to do with a reporter that decided to ride her bike to work to save money on public transport. now many of us have been riding for years and there are so many thing that we do out of habit. it was funny to read her account of just how difficult it is to be able to signal by taking your hands off the bars; turn your head to check your blind spot; dodging pedestrians on the causeway; riding when it is 1.6 degrees. many of these things we take for granted and may have been doing them since we were kids. however, there are lots of people out there that may not have ridden a bike since they were at school and just lack that bit of confidence to get back on. we are not talking about going from couch to riding in a pack, but even just tackling the bike paths can be daunting. the reporters mum was with her for moral support and it got me thinking, who do you know that just needs that little bit of encouragement to get onto a bike. we are not talking about rocking up on saturday morning, but just a gentle roll down to the river for a coffee. there are many husband/wife pairings in the club and at one stage the friday ride was considered the “couples ride”. who knows, one day we may see this reporter upgrading and coming down to join an spr ride.

tour of margs spr riders – the riders that have nominated for this years tomr have now been announced. teams will be determined from this list to give the best balance of abilities in each team. as with previous years, there are usually a few people dropping out due to sickness/injury/family/work so a couple more on the reserves list will not hurt. check out the previous post for more details and let the all powerful race committee know if you are interested.
bike swap meet – later this year perth will be hosting the pacific youth track cycling tournament. this event will actually cost quite a bit to hold and as such midland are organising a bike swap meet to raise funds. if you have any old bike parts that you think still have value, then you can register to sell them at this event. on to of this, it will be held at the velodrome while friday night track racing is one. buying bike stuff and watching bike racing. what more can you ask for. click on the flyer pic to the right for more details.
