for those that think that they know how to handle a bike, check out this picture from the olympic women’s keirin qualification heats. what is important to note is that the outcome of this “interaction” was that the french rider in blue crashed, but the dutch women in orange made it back onto the track and stayed upright. not only that, with a track bike, there are no brakes and you can’t stop pedalling. unfortunately a bit of shoulder on shoulder action in our group rides can have a similar outcome. not necessarily the olympic exposure, but a hard hit with the ground can leave you a lot worse for wear. it is predicted to be a little wet this saturday, so make sure that you give yourself a little more space as your recovery skills may not be to olympic standard.
ride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for august is Life Ready Physio & Pilates South Perth who are back as a second time sponsor. A number of our members already utilise the services provided by Life Ready Physio & Pilates South Perth as they are conveniently located in South Perth.
rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides. it is up to all members to enforce these rules.
collie-donnybrook – in 1925 on a typical collie winter’s day a small field of enthusiastic young cyclists pedalled their way through rain and hail over a rough, gravel bush road in the longest cycle race held by the collie cycle club (ccc) in its short history. good luck to the spr riders that are in the race this saturday.
the beverley – this is just a heads up for more information to come soon. the beverley race returns in conjunction with the beverley heroic. this race will be run by spr and will be a similar format to the collie-donnybrook. more info and entries can be found here, but there will be a blog post to follow soon.
tour of margs spr riders – the riders that have nominated for this years tomr have now been announced. teams will be determined from this list to give the best balance of abilities in each team. as with previous years, there are usually a few people dropping out due to sickness/injury/family/work so a couple more on the reserves list will not hurt. check out the previous post for more details and let the all powerful race committee know if you are interested.
uwct training – we will continue to replace the normal long hills ride with the uwct course and will be a race pace ride for those that have qualified. check out the previous post for more details.
uwct spr jersey – so for the people that will be representing both spr and australia at the grand fondo, the new kit has arrived. expect a message from the all powerful kit committee outlining when it can be collected.
uwct volunteers – to run a race as big as the uwct grand fondo final takes a lot of people covering a lot of ground. currently they are looking for volunteers for the 4th september to work as road race marshals. they are looking for people to help stand on corners, and it’s important that these people have some experience in cycling as they will be on the more challenging aspects of the course so being able to think like a cyclist will help. there are two areas of particular need:
- zone 9 – 16 marshals (mundaring weir road) – 4.75hr shift approx.
- zone 14 – 13 marshals (leithdale rd – clayton rd) – 4.5hr shift approx.
cic events have offered to make a donation to the club of $50 for every volunteer. if you are available to help out on the day, sign up here or contact the race organiser for more information. there is a field “associated sporting club” – make sure they put in your club name so the money can be reconciled.
volunteers will also receive
- an official UCI Gran Fondo World Championship shirt
- an official UCI Gran Fondo World Championship cap
- an official UCI Gran Fondo World Championship handbook
- lunch pack
- volunteer post event bbq
- certificate of appreciation
- award ceremony
- actively participate in all other aspects of the event
spr road race champs – the club road champs has been updated after the second pickering brook race. if you have raced in any of the races listed, see how you are tracking in club points. the leaderboard can be found in the menu above or here.
ride routes – ahhh, bugger. looks like the saturday forecast will involve a wet morning. therefore an old favourite of the tv stations will be on the cards so people can concentrate more on skills than navigation. sunday may be even wetter, so i hope that makes your saturday brighter.
