with many a place shutting down for xmas early and many members not working next week, there is a great chance for some extra kilometres. the rapha 500 on strava is a good challenge but make sure you are a member of our strava club so we can see who in the club is smashing out the k’s. so there are the regular rides listed below plus a few extra ones for the public holidays, but keep an eye out on our social media pages for anyone that may be looking for company this week.
crit season – rccc have the final event before christmas with their fourth criterium at tonkin business park in bayswater. last week there was an awesome turnout in the women’s field with good racing across all grades. the women’s “come and try” will also be on if there are any female riders that wish to see what racing is all about. more info and entries can be found here.
spr xmas awards – every year we give the members a chance to nominate people that have made a difference to the club. this may be via direct contact, though inspirational performance or just something that really sticks out (like years ago when ballam threw a water bottle at my head during the uwct final). check out the previous post for more details and a link to the survey.
spr xmas breakfast – along side the xmas awards survey is our annual xmas breakfast. dress up yourself or your bike for the chance at prizes. enjoy the buffet breakfast to replenish what you have burnt off during the ride. cost is $15 cash only. unfortunately we cannot offer a pay pass/credit card service for the breakfast as it is a separate event.
mercantile lane closure – some of you may remember that the pedestrian bridge over mercantile lane fell down earlier in the year. this is the back lane that we take to get from mounts bay rd to st georges terrace. as of tomorrow (20th) it will be closed again to facilitate the rebuilding of that foot bridge. no idea how long it will be down for, so you will need to take the next road (william st) to hook back around to the cafe after the ride.
hot weather policy – there has been a lot of discussion after last weeks heat wave as to how the club should run the sunday hills rides when the mercury rises significantly. there are a number of options being looked at including shortening rides, cancelling rides or changing times. as always, we cannot tell you not to ride and you do so at your own risk. however, if we deem that the conditions are not suitable, the club sanctioned training ride may be adjusted to suit. watch this space as more develops.
boxing day test (cycling edition) – for those interested (re: crazy enough), i will be looking at completing the double century for my boxing day test. this includes the night owl, earlybird, public holiday ride and finishes with the bin chicken. at least 2 of the rides are in a group where you can sit in as much as possible but generally this is unsupported so you need to make sure you have enough food and drink. hopefully doug can make a cricket themed night owl poster for the event.
sunday start locations – as numbers increase over summer, we are looking at how we can manage the groups on a sunday morning. as such we are implementing a start location system to give us an idea of how big the groups are. we can then split them before they leave the carpark to ensure that the groups are a safe size on the road. see the previous blog post about where to meet and the new start time.
saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning. please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate. this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts. see the previous post for more details.
spr juniors – juniors, juniors, juniors. the weather is looking good so get the kids out and onto the bikes. there were some new juniors out last weekend so the numbers are growing heading into summer. A few more returns from last year and we will have quite a squad in kings park.
from the ride coordinator – So for this weeks annual Christmas Ride we are looking to ensure we get all riders back as soon as possible. As a result we are going to have 3 ride routes published below. Canning Vale for the transition group, Canning Vale and Welshpool for M2&3 and Benara Road for Fast, Fast 2 and M1. Whilst the Fast groups will be off first, after they leave we will be alternating departures with the first M1 group, closely followed by first M2, then back to next M1, next M2 etc etc. It might pay for all riders to be ready to go a few minutes early, as your usual group may be off quicker than what you are normally used to. As this is my last post before Christmas, I wish everyone a happy festive season. If the festive 500 is your gig, enjoy. If it’s not, then still enjoy this wonderful time of year.
