Ride Routes 24 – 30th September

Come ride with us… As we get to the latter part of 2022, we thought it would be a good time to let you know the upcoming chick’s rides, dates and a little information. To mix things up we have decided on some different start times, days and venues.  These rides will be no drop, with the intention of socialising at the end.

Sunday 2 October at 7am meeting and ending at Lo Quay Cafe, Wilson – Coffee/food to end the ride. See FB event here.

Sunday 13 November at 5.30pm meeting and ending at the South Perth Food trucks – dinner at the food trucks.

December Xmas lights ride – more information to come.

All women are most welcome.  We would love to see many of you out with us!

Cheers,
SPR Chicks

Andrew Hutchison — Many of you will have heard the tragic news regarding the death of Andrew Hutchison earlier this week. Andrew rode with WGR and some of you may have raced with him at West Coast Masters.

However you look at what happened last Sunday, it is truly awful, and reminds us all of how exposed we can be as cyclists on the road. On behalf of SPR, I offer our condolences to Andrew’s family and his friends at WGR.

A friend and fellow cyclist at WGR, Ayman Haydar, has put together a fundraiser to support Andrew’s family through this tragic loss.

I encourage you to consider making a donation.

SPR Jarrahdale Team Time Trial — We are very pleased to announce that entries are open to SPR’s Jarrahdale Team Time Trial for 2022.

It is perfectly placed as preparation for the Tour of Margaret River, and will run in Shire of Jarrahdale on the same challenging 30km course as last year. The course is undulating and includes a total of 440m of climbing — designed to provide riders with a very similar experience to Day 1 at the Tour of Margaret River.

The time trial is open to teams of 6 riders (minimum of 4 ) with the team time taken from the 4th rider crossing the finish line. Teams will be released on regular intervals of between 1 and 2 minutes depending on number of teams entered.

All the details on Facebook and tickets on EntryBoss.

If you have any questions, get in touch via our Facebook page or on race@southperthrouleurs.com.au.

Call for Volunteers — As with all the cycling clubs around Perth, we run on the collective volunteering efforts our members.

The Jarrahadale Team Time Trial is no different, and we would love to hear from members able to assist in the following roles:

  • Marshals
  • Registration desk
  • On course turnaround point
  • Lead and 2nd car
  • SAG wagon
  • General help

From the Ride Coordinator — When welcoming the new ride leaders last week, I forgot to mention that Jake Harper is also a new ride leader – maybe because at the time, he was walking the Camino in Spain (and doing a little bit of work). Welcome on board Jake – I’m sure F2 & M1 will benefit from your skills.

The long weekend (extra-long for some) is a great opportunities to cram in a few extra km – great for those doing TOMR. Forecast is for great weather – except on Saturday morning (no surprise there). Likelihood of rain is decreasing, so we may get lucky. Just to be cautious I’ve set up a Zwift ride for those who prefer a stay-dry guarantee. Monday gets us onto the Northern Public Holiday route – check it out if you’re not familiar with it.

As the weather improves (?) and the groups get bigger (Sunday Long Hills was a cracker last week) there is a tendency for riders near the tail end of big groups to shoot red lights to avoid being left behind. We can all help by calling “Stopping” early, even if it splits the group. Far better to do that than take unnecessary risks at red lights. As part of our safety culture we always wait up for riders who choose to stop for a red light.

Enjoy the extra k’s this weekend, and stay safe.
