  • Following on from the success of the inaugural SPR Velo Solo Spring Classic last weekend, it was agreed by a number of participants, that we should hold a follow up event.

So please save the date (early December) for the running of the Inaugural SPR Velo Solo Summer Classic. This should give everyone time to source and prep a single speed bike. I have just secured a new steed (although it needs a 650c fork and front wheel plus some pink paint).

For those that didn’t make it last Saturday (the spring classic weather may have turned some off) we had a strong group of 8 riders. We managed to get the group working with riders rolling off the front through a number of sections. I think we even managed to pass a geared group. In true spring classic style, one rider decided to undertake a closer inspection of the nature strip at the bottom of Majestic and not wishing to boast, but I did take out the intermediate Port beach sprint (I may have been the only one contesting it though). As promised there was a winner’s purse, which we decided to share equally (sorry Russell).

Despite the rain and wet roads, it really was a fun ride (thanks to everyone who turned out for it). It would be great if we could get a bigger group together for the next one. There may even be a trophy and we will try and add a pavé section for the Summer Classic.

PS if anyone is thinking of getting a single speed, there are a lot going cheap on gumtree. I have been commuting on one all winter and it has really surprised me how much fun it is. Riding in a group with other SSers was even more enjoyable. So why not go out and spend a few $$ and join us.
