ride routes 24th – 30th december

15585141_10209854656557201_2669781095682146254_owhy are these people important???  well the little one at the left of the picture is a former world champion and olympian, so that seems pretty important.  however, as she pointed out, she may not have got to that point if she was not given any direction early in her cycling career.  the ride leader pilot program was developed to make sure that we have consistency across the groups in relation to what standard we are setting on our group rides.  the pilot program was to iron out any kinks in how we are presenting the program.  now it is finalised, we are looking forward to taking our next group through the process next year.  not only do you get to help out the club by providing support to the groups, you get a limited edition ride leader jersey so people can identify you.

ride leader sponsor – the dr7ride leader sponsor for december is Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry. Located within Dr7 Medical Centre in Yokine, their experienced physios, podiatrists and massage therapists provide a wide range of services and treatments to help optimise your health and well-being.

which-way-to-gowhere are we riding today – please have a quick look at this post as there is some important safety info about why we publish ride routes before the weekend.

blazing-sungroup ride summer start times – there have been a few request lately in regards to starting some of the rides earlier over summer.  this comes up every year and so we will give the same answer.  no.  the rides are at a set time so that there is consistency throughout the entire year.  we have people that come and go over the year and we would like to make sure that everyone know what time the rides leave.  also over the weekend, there are lots of people that do the earlybird as well as the main ride.  if we bring the main ride forward to 6am, then we need to bring the earlybird forward to 4:30am. the other complication is we would need to determine when the rides are summer time starts and when they change back.  anyway, the formula has worked well so far and no-one has needed to be hospitalised for heat exhaustion.  just be aware of the predicted weather conditions and plan accordingly.

are-you-even-fast-too_graphicfast too??? – as the group grows in size and skill levels increase, it is important for us to change how we are structured to adapt to this.  there has been a very clear need to a group that sits between fast and main as some people cannot keep up with fast, but are too strong for main.  we now have one for thursday and last weekend we debuted a saturday group.  these have been rather aptly called “fast 2”.  minutes of thought went into the name of this group but it serves its purpose.  the training and development committee have put a bit of thought into which group you should ride in.  check out the previous post for an “easy to follow” chart of how to make that decision.

green_and_black_gloves-672x372spr gloves –there are a small number of gloves available in black/green that were done as a sample before we finalised the white ones.  limited stock, in the club shop.  see the previous post for more details.

dome-logocoffee shop – just a reminder that over the christmas break, that our favourite coffee hang out, Dome, is only closed on xmas day.  therefore the public holiday ride on boxing day (and any other rides) will be able to finish in the city.

untitled-7licences/memberships – as of today we have 435 financial members.  in 2 weeks time we will lose 168 as people come to the end of their membership.  the majority of those will be race licences that expire on the 31st dec.  however, regardless of whether you are racing or not, having an expired licence means that you have no insurance.  this means that if you have a crash on a group ride, or even by yourself, there is nothing covering you for out of pocket expenses.  also, it disappoints me when our membership dips below 300.  see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – it’s xmas and although the majority of people are thinking about presents and family and maybe even church, i know that you are all thinking about how many k’s you can do over the next week.  there is no “official” ride on sunday this week.  there is, however, a bit of a tradition forming where mr bonner will take out a group for a leisurely ride to make room for the turkey and chocolates.  leaving from coode st at 7am there is a set ride route that you need to have a quick look at.  as we will miss out sunday hills ride, this will move to tuesday public holiday.  monday will be the normal public holiday ride, but tuesday will be the short and long hills ride.  there are many people that have the rest of the week off as well.  keep your eye on the SPR facebook page for any unofficial extra rides that people may be doing.  however, no matter the ride, make sure that you are looking after your own safety and that of others.

naughty or nice.

its beginning to smell a lot like christmas.  and in australia that usually means hot and stinky.  our annual dress up ride is this saturday so decorate your bike and yourself.  tinsel, bells, baubles, reindeer antlers have all been seen on bikes in the past.  elves, santas, mrs claus, reindeer are all popular xmas riding attire.  there is a prize for best dressed/decorated but remember safety first and dangly things can get caught in wheels and chains.  maybe if you are lucky, you can find a santa at the coffee shop and let him know if you have been naughty or nice.  i’ll let you decide which one has been naughty and which has been nice in the photo above.

logo-2the ring criterium series – this weekend sees the 5th race of the ring series head back to tech park where spr and rccc will run proceedings.  the series has been very successful and there has been close to 200 riders at every event.  online entries close every thursday night preceeding the race, so if you want to race, get on it now.  there has been lots of discussion about the number of people wanting to ride ‘b’ grade and what to do in this situation.  essentaily, the course is not really wide and flat enough to run 2 large fields at once.  therefore both ‘a’ and ‘b’ grade will be capped and it will run on a first come, first served basis.  if you really want to race, buy a season pass for entry to every race.  entries and more information are available via the ring website.

green_and_black_gloves-672x372spr gloves –there are a small number of gloves available in black/green that were done as a sample before we finalised the white ones.  limited stock, in the club shop.  see the previous post for more details.

12390929_10205538758771752_7857214735884350558_nspr xmas breakfast and award spectacular – so our end of year wrap up breakfast is on this saturday.  as per usual, this will be a dressup/decorate your bike day. there will also be more awards than you can poke a stick at, covering a years worth of club activity. check out the previous post and put your name down in the comments so Dome can adequately cater for us.

Christmas bicyclespr xmas drinks – as the christmas season descends upon us, we look to find a slot to have an out of lycra social get together.  this year we will be back again at the empire bar and we thank the social committee for organising everything.  if you are interested, tickets and more info is available via the previous post.

ride routes – it is a true test of one’s fitness when you can do the normal saturday morning ride at a pb pace wearing a full santa suit.  it is looking like it will be 33 degrees, so make sure that the santa suit is not north pole rated and you have adequate hydration.

spr-vanit is a long time in the making, but we finally have a club support van.  about 18 months ago, an ultimatium was put down to get all the club related stuff out of my garage.  there are 3 tents, 2 eskys, flags, sandbags, tables, pretty much everything that we need at an event.  the committee has had many a discussion over what to get and we went through many iterations of trailers before finally settling on a van instead.  this allows easier access to the club gear (no towbar needed) and also puts our brand out there for all to see.  the biggest problem was finding a van that was in our colours :).  we have a temporary solution for van storage, but if anyone in the club has a business, etc that has a secure area that we can store the van when not in use, please let me know.  when needed, we would arrange to pick up (probably friday) to use over the weekend.

12804663_10207482052243576_864156240251221661_nwhich group to ride with – if you are unsure about which of the more developmental rides (main 3, , & trannies) to ride with, check out the previous post.  we split our saturday rides into specific groups for a reason, and that reason is everyone’s safety.  please do not try to make the group ride your own personal time trial, or complain that you had to wait for someone.  if you find that you are too strong for that group, then do more work on the front, or hang back and draft stragglers back on.  don’t force the entire pace of the ride up and think that you have done a great job of controlling the ride.  these are group rides so you have to acknowledge the entire group.

Sprint/ Mark CAVENDISH
Sprint/ Mark CAVENDISH

do you think you can sprint – in light of developing a stricter set of standards around the ride leadership that we provide, we have recently had a look at sprinting within our group rides.  we certainly encourage people to have a go at certain times, but they must be within the confines of a certain set of standards that we set.  this is for the safety of not only the individual, but also the group.  please have a read of the previous post, and have a think about when you should and shouldn’t sprint.

spr-banners-output_2new branding – you may have seen that the first phase of the new branding rolled out his week.  a bunch of new headers with our new logo attached.  you should expect to see this in a few more places both in the virtual world and the real world.

logo-2

the ring criterium series – this weekend sees the 4th race of the ring series head back to rockingham.  online entries close every thursday night preceeding the race, so if you want to race, get on it now.  entries and more information are available via the ring website.

green_and_black_gloves-672x372spr gloves – there are a small number of gloves available in black/green that were done as a sample before we finalised the white ones.  limited stock, in the club shop.  see the previous post for more details.

Christmas bicyclespr xmas drinks – as the christmas season descends upon us, we look to find a slot to have an out of lycra social get together.  this year we will be back again at the empire bar and we thank the social committee for organising everything.  if you are interested, tickets and more info is available via the previous post.

race licences – there are a couple of different types of licences that you can get when you become a member of spr.  a recreational licence and a racing licence.  recreational licences are for those that really only do the club training rides and want a bit of insurance coverage.  it covers a full year from the time you purchase it.  a race licence covers you for both training and racing and is necessary if you want to pin a number on.  race licences are only valid for the calendar year which means that they expire at the end of december.  however, the 2017 licences can be purchased from the 1st october and will then give you 15 months of coverage.  if you are looking at upgrading to do some racing next year, or need one to do the summer crit races, then now is the time to join or renew.

ride routes – looking like a scorcher this saturday with an expected 33 degrees by 9am.  make sure that you are prepared.  if you have any concerns during the ride, please see your ride leader or any of the more experienced riders in the group.  the last thing we want to do is leave someone on their own if they are struggling with the heat.  you tend to make bad decisions when you place your body under too much stress.  this week we will also be running a “fast 2” group that sits between fast and main 1.  it has been working well on thursday mornings, so we will see how it goes on saturday as the groups get bigger.

last week i wrote about the ring criterium series, so i guess i can’t write about that again.  however, what i want to mention is how we can use it to promote our sport.  there has been a lot of very good quality photos and video coming out of this series.  photo’s like that of the flying mustache pictured above.  this has been a deliberate move by cyclesport wa to try to create an atmostphere around the series to try to turn it into more than just a bunch of bike races.  what you can do is tag and share as much content as you can on social media.  come along to the races, even as a spectator, and post photos etc to your accounts.  invite friends and family along to watch you race.  encourage people from your club to come and give it a try.  what has been created here is something that we as riders need to support and promote as much as possible.  oh, and the more riders we have in spr colours goes towards promoting the club as well…and that can’t be a bad thing.

the ring criterium series – this weekend sees the 3rdrace of the ring series head to gnangara.  the race will be run by about 3 clubs as we are sharing the load between the clubs. online entries close every thursday night preceeding the race, so if you want to race, get on it now.  entries and more information are available via the ring website.

CoSP Logo CMYKcity of south perth survey – sometimes you need to get a bit political to get what you want.  the city of south perth is doing a survey to see what facilities it needs to provide for in the future.  these things always take time, but if they haven’t identified anything in their longer term plan, then it will never get budgeted for.  the city is also currently in the process of it’s foreshore redevelopment program.  as part of that they have identified a park that they would like to use for junior sport.  i have already started a discussion with the city on the use of that area for a crit circuit.  what we now need to do is reinforce that when they do their data collection.  they currently have a survey out for what people would like to see developed over the next 10 years.  if you get the chance, can you please take a bit of time and fill it in.  you don’t have to be from south perth, as you can say that you attend events here.  in the section where it asks what priorities it should concentrate on, indicate that you would like facilties for traffic free bike training and racing.  if they don’t know, they don’t provide. the survey can be found here.

green_and_black_gloves-672x372spr gloves – there are a small number of gloves available in black/green that were done as a sample before we finalised the white ones.  limited stock, in the club shop.  see the previous post for more details.

have-your-say_take-our-surveyspr club awards – every year we like to acknowledge member for the effort that they have made on behalf of the club.  as the club is so big, the committee doesn’t have viability on everything that occurs.  as such we ask you, the members, to take a bit of time to fill in a short survey nominating people for particular achievements.  These are not things like winning races, but instead, categories like “most improved”, “most inspirational”, “good samaritan”.  things that make the club good to be a part of.  check out the previous post and take the time to fill in your nominations.

Christmas bicyclespr xmas drinks – as the christmas season descends upon us, we look to find a slot to have an out of lycra social get together.  this year we will be back again at the empire bar and we thank the social committee for organising everything.  if you are interested, tickets and more info is available via the previous post.

ride routes – please have a look at the main group ride route for saturday as there are quite a few turns that you need to make.  generally i try to make the ride routes come to a major intersection when you have to turn, but sometimes there are turns to be made on a straight stretch of road.  don’t let your in decision cause a chain reaction down the line.  make sure you know the ride route.

15137603_10154264122059790_2166078231882828521_oa very successful start to the crit season with the ring series kicking off last week.  there were over 200 riders that signed up for round 1 and it was good to see it go off without a hitch.  there are some small issues with the timing system, but we had video backup which showed the finishing positions of all riders.  the ring series has come about as a way of getting more clubs involved to provide racing across the summer.  instead of there being 1 series on the same circuit (smashfest) this way there is an opportunity for people to race on different circuits for accumulated points.  if all goes well, we are hoping to replicate it over winter with a series of road races under the same format.

do you think you can sprint – in light of developing a stricter set of standards around the ride leadership that we provide, we have recently had a look at sprinting within our group rides.  we certainly encourage people to have a go at certain times, but they must be within the confines of a certain set of standards that we set.  this is for the safety of not only the individual, but also the group.  please have a read of the previous post, and have a think about when you should and shouldn’t sprint.

logo-2the ring criterium series – this weekend sees the second race of the ring series head to rockingham.  the race will be run as usual by peel disctricts as we are sharing the load between the clubs. online entries close every thursday night preceeding the race, so if you want to race, get on it now.  entries and more information are available via the ring website.

_dsc5021tour of margs spr race reports – if you are curious as to what the club got up to down at margaret river the other week, then there is a race report from the event on a previous post.  maybe it will inspire you enough so that you sign up for next year.

Christmas bicyclespr xmas drinks – as the christmas season descends upon us, we look to find a slot to have an out of lycra social get together.  this year we will be back again at the empire bar and we thank the social committee for organising everything.  if you are interested, tickets and more info is available via the previous post.

race licences – there are a couple of different types of licences that you can get when you become a member of spr.  a recreational licence and a racing licence.  recreational licences are for those that really only do the club training rides and want a bit of insurance coverage.  it covers a full year from the time you purchase it.  a race licence covers you for both training and racing and is necessary if you want to pin a number on.  race licences are only valid for the calendar year which means that they expire at the end of december.  however, the 2017 licences can be purchased from the 1st october and will then give you 15 months of coverage.  if you are looking at upgrading to do some racing next year, or need one to do the summer crit races, then now is the time to join or renew.

ride routes – looks like summer is coming early for the end of november, then disappearing for the start of december.  some hot days predicted over the weekend, so make sure that you are prepared to ride in the heat.

the tour of margaret river has been run again for 2016 and it was a great club weekend for spr.  all teams put in a great effort and thanks to the tour organiser, spr had a prime location everyday and even vip parking on the final day.  a lot of work went into getting 6 teams organised, accommodated and logistically in-sync.  a special thanks to greg murray of the all powerful race committee for his immense efforts leading up to the event.  i personally had a really crap race, but was buoyed but the great club camaraderie and help that all riders received over the weekend.  another special thanks to the 2nd women’s team for feeding me after a disastrous stage 2.  much appreciated.

arbonneride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for november is Sharon Gleeson an Independant Consultant for Arbonne Phytosport.  Arbonne Phytosport provides products that are vegan certified, gluten free, dairy free and contain nothing artificial. formulated with plant-powered ingredients, essential branched-chain amino acids, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and botanical extracts, these products promote increased endurance and energy, and boost nitric oxide production to support blood and oxygen flow in muscles

10959554_722247487894542_3125038920721827973_nthe ring criterium series – this weekend sees the first race of the ring series kick off in tech park.  the race will be run as usual by rccc and spr.  we will need 1 or 2 volunteers to help out and racing starts early at 7:30am.  this year the series is not just the rccc/spr races but includes races from across a number of clubs.  this will provide more variation and hopefully better racing all summer.  online entries close every thursday night preceeding the race, so if you want to race, get on it now.  entries and more information are available via the ring website.

brodie-brownbrodie brown’s movember challenge – everesting.  for those of you that understand what it is, you know what an immense physical and mental challenge it is.  for those unaware, it is riding up the same climb over and over again until you climb the same altitude as mt everest (8848m).  as part of movember, former club member brodie brown (of iron horse t-shirts, for any of you that got a club t back then), is attempting to climb 10,000m to raise money movember.  he has been blogging through teh movember site and is attempting the challenge this weekend.  he is expecting that it will take about 16 hours and then not be able to walk afterwards.  if you want to read more on his story and to donate, check out this link.

14917158_641938550036_7641734007593350770_oi love how events like the tour of margs brings people within the club together.  people that may not necessarily socialise that much normally get thrown together and spend time training up for an event.  some of the teams have also taken it to the next level.  spr women’s 2 recently all got matching socks for the event.  spr women’s 1 went a step further and have personalised team towels.  unfortunately the men’s teams are not quite as organised and will be lucky if we even bring enough food down with us. 🙂  however, after a number of years of doing this event, i can say that it is a great way to get to know people especially over the team “family” meals.  put it on your list for next year.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

letter-exceptions-6-october-2016-ride-up-and-disc-brakestechnical regulations – there have been a couple of changes to the wa technical regulations in relation to racing.  firstly, any juniors that renew their licences after the 1st october and move up an age group are then eligible to race in their new division.  this means that some junior riders will now be able to ride in the tomr.  secondly, there has been a technical exemption for the tomr to allow road bikes to use disc brakes.  there have been lots of new bikes released in the last couple of years that have disc brakes and the tomr is meant to encourage more people into racing.  as such, if your current bike has discs, you don’t need to find a different bike to ride.  click on the letter to see all the details.

hvcf-flyer_dennis_2016henk vogels foundation charity dinner – your chance to meet protour bmc rider, 2016 aussie olympian and former 1hr world record holder, rohan dennis.  the henk vogels foundation is holding a charity dinner on the 4th of november.  all proceeds from the dinner will go back into the sport of cycling. click on the flyer for more information and links to purchase tickets.

The new kit…

spr kit – we should have the latest order of spr kit available for collection this saturday after the main ride.  it is expected to hit perth tomorrow, but we will let you know if it is delayed.

ride routes – we get another taste of summer this weekend with saturday being the polar opposite from last week.  strong easterlys and a top of 37 should mean that we get a full contingent of riders hitting coode st at 7am.  this give you, the rider, a lot more choices.  fast, fast 2, main 1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 etc…

Testimonial – Sam Smith (Competitive Masters Cyclist; 2016 World Masters Road Race Champion 45-49 Age Category)

“I am a Masters cyclist and currently 44 years old. I have been racing competitively since I was 34 and have raced at many levels including Open WA Races, Masters (local and national), and Internationally in Indonesian Tours. I was introduced to the Arbonne product(s) nearly 12 months ago.  The regime I’ve developed means I keep both my energy levels and hydration under control and I start my recovery process before I have even stepped off the bike. I also use the Energy Fizz Sticks for short high intensity Criterium races when I need a “pick me up”.  They give you that instant kick to get you performing quickly.  I can whole-heartedly endorse and recommend the Arbonne products and have found the main advantage they have over other similar products I have tried is they don’t upset your stomach.” For a full breakdown on how Sam uses the Phytosport products contact Sharon Gleeson.

Testimonial – Vanessa Johnson (Competitive Masters Cyclist South Perth Rouleurs; Qualified for 2017 Grand Fondo World Championships in France)

“I started using the Arbonne Phytosport range 12 months ago because the nutritional content compared well with other products I was using and it is certified drug free by the Banned Substances Control Group. I’ve kept using it because it works and tastes great without being too sweet. The Complete Hydration sticks are my favourite product.”

spr_logo_cmyk_masterbranding.  so recently we had a look at our branding and how we could incorporate the club culture into a logo.  the last thing we wanted to see was another stylised bike picture slightly on an angle depicting speed.  we think that we are a bit more than that and we wanted something that embraces the four cornerstones of the club – safety, inclusive, organised & social.  a pretty big ask but it looks like our resident designer (charlotte) was up to the task.  the logo is more asbstract than exact and incorporates four elements into a rotational mass that is easily recognisable as bike orientated.  you will be seeing this logo appearing on more of our stuff in the future including the next run of kit.  (sorry for the delay in the ride routes, i was overly busy this week and totally forgot what day it was).

square_blue-bk_orangeride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for october is Discover Cycling.  Founded and run by SPR member Leigh Outschoorn, Discover Cycling is a boutique cycle coaching provider who works with you to develop a personalised training program to achieve your cycling goals.

rac council voting – some of you may remember ronny low and his partner emma richardson as regular spr riders a few years back.  well emma’s dad is on the rac council and is up for re-election this year.  if you are a member of the RAC and have no idea of who to vote for, have a read of his introduction letter and lets start pushing for a perth where roads are not just for cars.
