ride routes 27th aug – 2nd sep

14055080_10154231078620709_324775838543150706_nteam.  there are lots of opportunities for you to represent spr between now and the end of the year.  if you managed to qualify for the grand fondo, then you could be racing in your aussie/spr kit.  if not, then you can always help out at our feedzone on the day.  pickering brook race in on this weekend as is the last of the cyclocross races for those that want a softer landing (and beer handups).  for the ultimate team experience, you can’t beat the tour of margs.  travelling as a team, racing as a team, staying together as a team.  so much green for a weekend.

life ready logoride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for august is Life Ready Physio & Pilates South Perth who are back as a second time sponsor. A number of our members already utilise the services provided by Life Ready Physio & Pilates South Perth as they are conveniently located in South Perth.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

cyclocross – the last race in the numbat cup is this sunday at garvey park. if you are looking for something different, or something for the kids to do, then entries close late tonight.

ride leader pilot program – as mentioned previously, we are kicking off the ride leader pilot program.  this is to ensure that we have a consistent message across all the groups. as such, some of our regular ride leaders may be taking part in the practical sessions that are being run in conjunction with the online theory.  we may be looking for a few regular riders to step up and help the club by looking after a group.

778388p3442EDNmain24939The-Beverley-Race-2016-700_200-CSWA-bannerthe beverley – this is just a heads up for more information to come soon.  the beverley race returns in conjunction with the beverley heroic.  this race will be run by spr and will be a similar format to the collie-donnybrook.  more info and entries can be found here, but there will be a blog post to follow soon.

Womens Warm up Nannup 2016tour of margs spr riders – the riders that have nominated for this years tomr have now been announced.   teams will be determined from this list to give the best balance of abilities in each team.  as with previous years, there are usually a few people dropping out due to sickness/injury/family/work so a couple more on the reserves list will not hurt.  check out the previous post for more details and let the all powerful race committee know if you are interested.

uwct grand fondo final 2016

uwct training – we will continue to replace the normal long hills ride with the uwct course and will be a race pace ride for those that have qualified.  check out the previous post for more details.

uwct volunteers – to run a race as big as the uwct grand fondo final takes a lot of people covering a lot of ground.  currently they are looking for volunteers for the 4th september to work as road race marshals.  they are looking for people to help stand on corners, and it’s important that these people have some experience in cycling as they will be on the more challenging aspects of the course so being able to think like a cyclist will help. there are two areas of particular need:

  • zone 9 –  16 marshals (mundaring weir road)  – 4.75hr shift approx.
  • zone 14 – 13 marshals (leithdale rd – clayton rd) – 4.5hr shift approx.

cic events have offered to make a donation to the club of $50 for every volunteer.  if you are available to help out on the day, sign up here or contact the race organiser for more information.  there is a field “associated sporting club” – make sure they put in your club name so the money can be reconciled.

volunteers will also receive

  • an official UCI Gran Fondo World Championship shirt
  • an official UCI Gran Fondo World Championship cap
  • an official UCI Gran Fondo World Championship handbook
  • lunch pack
  • volunteer post event bbq
  • certificate of appreciation
  • award ceremony
  • actively participate in all other aspects of the event

spr road race champs – this weekend’s pickering brook race will be the next race in our club champs.  if you have raced in any of the races listed, see how you are tracking in club points.  the leaderboard can be found in the menu above or here.

ride routes – sigh, another saturday, another prediction of rain.  this one is looking pretty full on too.  heavy showers from midnight till dawn and then more showers during the day.  see who gets belgium points this weekend.

ride leader pilot program

06one of the unique features of SPR is that we run training rides every day of the week, where we get riders from many different backgrounds, fitness levels and riding experience. trying to manage this wide spread of skills, abilities and knowledge within a given ride is no small challenge. the committee regularly gets feedback, and discusses at great length, on how to deal with this.

without exception, the key thing that comes out of this is that we need to have larger numbers of well skilled ride leaders. its believed that by having better, more consistent ride leadership, our rides will be safer and more enjoyable for everyone involved.

over the last three months, the club’s training and development sub-committee has been developing a theory and skills based program for ride leaders. the program pilot will kick off this month with a small group of current ride leaders offering their time, experience and feedback on the course content and delivery.

the pilot will run through to early november and when its finished, you will start to see and feel quite a different approach taken to ride leadership. we will then announce when the first “public” program will run which will be available to all interested club members, probably sometime in december or january.

ride routes 20th – 26th august

2526for those that think that they know how to handle a bike, check out this picture from the olympic women’s keirin qualification heats.  what is important to note is that the outcome of this “interaction” was that the french rider in blue crashed, but the dutch women in orange made it back onto the track and stayed upright.  not only that, with a track bike, there are no brakes and you can’t stop pedalling.  unfortunately a bit of shoulder on shoulder action in our group rides can have a similar outcome.  not necessarily the olympic exposure, but a hard hit with the ground can leave you a lot worse for wear.  it is predicted to be a little wet this saturday, so make sure that you give yourself a little more space as your recovery skills may not be to olympic standard.

life ready logoride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for august is Life Ready Physio & Pilates South Perth who are back as a second time sponsor. A number of our members already utilise the services provided by Life Ready Physio & Pilates South Perth as they are conveniently located in South Perth.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

collie-donnybrook – in 1925 on a typical collie winter’s day a small field of enthusiastic young cyclists pedalled their way through rain and hail over a rough, gravel bush road in the longest cycle race held by the collie cycle club (ccc) in its short history.  good luck to the spr riders that are in the race this saturday.

1443uwct spr jersey – so for the people that will be representing both spr and australia at the grand fondo, the new kit has arrived.  expect a message from the all powerful kit committee outlining when it can be collected.

ride routes – ahhh, bugger.  looks like the saturday forecast will involve a wet morning.  therefore an old favourite of the tv stations will be on the cards so people can concentrate more on skills than navigation.  sunday may be even wetter, so i hope that makes your saturday brighter.

13901437_10157186773005109_5029637015396199468_ncongratulations to paul and francine on the arrival of little elliot.  goodbye to bikes and home brew and hello to nappies and feeding. 🙂 its been a while since we have had an spr baby (i.e. both parents ride with us) and i think that kizzi’s twins were the last ones.  i fully expect that the twins would be close to running marathons by now.  paul and francine now get to add a bike seat, balance bike and kids trailer to the bike collection.

ride routes 6th – 12th august

1470194234400so there was an interesting article on the watoday website that i came across yesterday.  it had to do with a reporter that decided to ride her bike to work to save money on public transport.  now many of us have been riding for years and there are so many thing that we do out of habit.  it was funny to read her account of just how difficult it is to be able to signal by taking your hands off the bars; turn your head to check your blind spot; dodging pedestrians on the causeway; riding when it is 1.6 degrees.  many of these things we take for granted and may have been doing them since we were kids.  however, there are lots of people out there that may not have ridden a bike since they were at school and just lack that bit of confidence to get back on.  we are not talking about going from couch to riding in a pack, but even just tackling the bike paths can be daunting.  the reporters mum was with her for moral support and it got me thinking, who do you know that just needs that little bit of encouragement to get onto a bike.  we are not talking about rocking up on saturday morning, but just a gentle roll down to the river for a coffee.  there are many husband/wife pairings in the club and at one stage the friday ride was considered the “couples ride”.  who knows, one day we may see this reporter upgrading and coming down to join an spr ride.

Ijqj7d_Viewsome of you may know one of our members, shane french is currently riding his way across america.  the route covers just over 6,000 kms so is a pretty epic riding holiday.  he has been doing the occasional update to the spr facebook page, but if you really want to see how he is going, have a look at his blog.  currently he is 26 days in and already up to his 4th state.  he has been writing about each day and i have browsed through, but mostly flicked through some of the awesome scenery that he has passed through.  this year seems to be the year of spr riding holidays.  who has the next big trip planned???

ride routes – there has been a bit of a spate of westerly winds on saturdays, so we are taking advantage of it and programming in the rides to come home from the coast. this may mean that we get a few repeated rides over the coming weeks, but once we hit the constant easterly winds, you will then get sick of coming home from the hills.

13765962_1137981182924951_2692795856108293044_oit’s a big world out there, especially since perth is one of those cities where everyone seems to know each other.  what i have been surprised about is how often the spr connection brings people together.  the picture above is of sarah and charlotte over in france, and while that was probably prearranged, it is good when two holiday’s converge.  the picture to the right is jj and edward.  edward used to ride with us a lot while he was working over here for bhp.  he has since headed back to korea and if you follow him on strava, he is still doing big k’s.  jj and elar are over there on holidays and were surprised to see an spr jersey riding around.  it is good to make those connections and even better when they are unexpected.  you will be surprised how many waves you get just on the bike path if you are wearing your club colours.

13603731_10207876496725157_1902549285779048482_osorry, been on the tools all day doing bathroom renovations.  totally forgot about the ride routes, so i have slapped something together and it is probably full of spelling mistakes.  i am really just stringing words together to make it look like i have written something insightful and to bulk out the blog enough to get the text past the picture on the left.  with the tour on at night and early rides in the morning, something was eventually going to have to give.

street artso, the federal election has be run and, and, and…well, still being counted.  we had a crack at the senate and after 60% of the count has been done, we really didn’t poll enough to make an impact.  politics is a fickle thing and at the moment it seems that to get votes for your minor party, it pretty much needs to be openly racist.  the rise of the “patriotic” parties is a bit disturbing and a few years ago, no-one would have thought that pauline would get votes.  for us, it has been a learning experience and we appreciate the support that has been showed.  talking to the party president, the day after, we discussed that the conversation really needs to not be directed at cyclists.  it is preaching to the converted.  we need to convince drivers that more cyclists means less cars on the road and therefore less congestion.  something to think about for next time.

logo-tour-de-france-2015tour de france tipping – with the tour already underway, we are looking at selling our final 2 spots in the sweepstakes so we can draw the teams.  with only 5 stages completed, etixx-quickstep has so far won back 1/3 of their investment.  the team with the winning rider however, walks away with over $140 for their $30 investment. check out the previous post and grab the final 2 spots so we can draw the teams out.  the sweepstakes leaderboard is already being updated, so you can see which teams are doign well.

20160612_140935cyclocross – round 4 of the numbat cup is on this sunday at edgewater quarry, joondalup. racing for all ages and abilities and nothing is taken too seriously.  there are even beer handups and fancy dress (for some). see their event page for more details, but entries close tonight.  you don’t even need a fancy cx bike as just a mtb will do.
