ride routes 16th – 22nd april

so last week i jumped on a “hire bike” to pick up #1 son’s tryathlon race pack.  there is a bike library at work and a bunch of bikes are available for free for those that work at central park.  they are provided by spinway bikes and there are a number of these racks all around the city.  now i do a lot of riding, usually around 15,000kms per year.  however, i must say that i have never felt as unsafe and exposed on a bike as i did when i was riding this machine.  i was riding down st georges terrace at about 2pm on a friday, but i didn’t think that the traffic was anything out of the ordinary.  i was wearing my work gear and there was not an item of lycra to be seen.  what made me feel vulnerable was my inability to flow with the traffic.  the bike has 3 gears but it was so hard to get any speed out of it, that it made negotiating traffic near on impossible.  95% of my riding is on the road and i feel comfortable on there the majority of the time.  however, for those that don’t ride in the style that we do, the road can be a very daunting place.  probably the most disappointing thing was the fact that even though perth has an excellent network of bike paths, they all disappear when they get close to the city.  in my case it was ride in the bus lane, or walk the bike along the footpath.  i can see why people struggle to see bicycles as a legitimate form of transport.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

bicycle-lights_590_360_80_all_10bike lights – it is now at that time of year where if you are doing the earlybird ride, then you need a good set of lights.  last year i wrote a long post about bike lights and what we expect when riding in a group.  basically, bigger/brighter is not always better.  please read the post take note of what effects your lights have on the rest of the group. take any suggestions on board as at the end of the day, it is for the safety of the group as a whole.

kit crash replacement – we  now have a crash replacement policy for your spr kit.  if you damage your kit by some misadventure (on your bike) you can contact the kit committee and get a 30% discount on your replacement kit.  please see the previous post for more details.

Goldfieldsgoldfields classic – feel like racing across the vast expanse of the kalgoorlie area???  he goldfields classic handicap race is on again and we are looking at who wishes to head across for the long weekend of racing.  as in previous years, spr will organise the logistics of transport, accommodation and transfers so you can just pay, turn up and race.  please see the previous post if you are interested in racing or even in volunteering to help out.

Pizzagiro d’italia night – the first social night of the year is almost upon us.  come and spend an evening of italian flavour at bravos restaurant to celebrate the giro d’italia.  organised by the spr social committee, this is open to all members/partners.  please see the previous post for further details.

spr road race champs – off the back of the crit championships will be the road race championships for 2016.  there are a number of races identified that riders will accumulate point for.  a change in the scoring system this year to try to allow those that have a go at ‘a’ grade a better chance of getting points.  please see the previous post for more info.

ride routes – everyone loves holmes road…right.  anyway, i noticed that there are not that many tranny ride routes in the total list.  if you are a regular tranny rider, and would like a bit more variation, i can map out some new routes.  i just need some hints on where you think that would make a good route.  even if it is just a section of road the is wide enough, challenging enough, or interesting enough, i can map the to and from.  let me know. and garmin has fixed the map issue.

roundabouts.  so last week a person was killed when they were knocked from their bike at a roundabout in halls head.  Gabriele Schiller-Brett was struck by a station wagon, dragged across the roundabout and deposited on the opposite kerb.  the driver continued across the nature strip and back onto the road not stopping to see the damage they caused.  the marks across the grass that can be seen on the picture above shows the path that the car, bike and victim took.  it is impossible for someone not to realise that they had hit someone but this person took the cowards way out and continued driving.  Ms Schiller-Brett later died in peel hospital.  for us as cyclists, roundabouts represent one of the biggest risks when we are riding in traffic.  as group, traffic entering the same intersection may have right away and the group will need to stop as required by the law.  this can often cause confusion within the group as people don’t want to be dropped, but better to stop and chase then end up under a garbage truck.  as an individual on the bike, roundabouts often form a choke point where bike lanes and shoulders miraculously disappear only to start again on the other side.  in this case you are basically on your own and cars will often try to squeeze by.  when i am riding on my own and approaching a roundabout like that, i check when it is safe, then move out to sit in the middle of the lane.  it may piss some drivers off, but it leaves no space for them to try to squeeze by.  in our group rides you need to be aware of the road and traffic conditions.  there may be times that we need to ride single file and there may be times when it is safer for us to take the lane to stop drivers taking risks with our lives.  make sure you are aware and don’t just leave it up to other people.

midland 100 – quite a lot of spr members are taking part in one of the toughest races on the perth calendar.  it may not be as long as some, but it is hard on a hard course.  good luck to all those who have entered.

ride routes – so after a number of emails and conversations with garmin, it seems that the maps are working again.  it also looks like we haven’t quite finished with the easterly winds.  although the mornings have been spectacular recently with light winds and cooler temperatures.  a few more weeks of this and we will be entering arm warmer and vest territory.  a flatish course on saturday for all those that are racing the midland very hilly 100.

12419204_10154860055860620_1870230725140136959_oit’s funny who you see turn up for a normal saturday ride in the rain.  i headed down to the earlybird ride and was actually hoping the no-one would be there so i could do some urban hill climbs in some nice dry carparks.  unfortunately for me, there were 5 of us in total that endured the spray in the face.  then  at the main ride, there were around another 20 sad looking souls hoping for a ride.  it was wet, but it was not that cold.  we decided to just do a river loop through cottesloe as it was safer to keep it as close to home as possible.  i got a flat at port beach, but told the group to continue on as i didn’t want everyone waiting in the rain.  i fixed it and continued the ride home.  i was so filthy that i had to hose myself off before i could enter the house and my jersey needed to be washed twice to get the road grime off.  it sounds like a terrible day on the bike, but i really enjoyed it.

bike_sticker_heiko-300x225bike stickers – the bike name stickers that we ordered earlier in the year will be available for collection at the coffee shop on saturday.  this is the last weekend to collect from the coffee shop.  if you cannot collect them, send an email through to the club and we will make alternative arrangements to collect from the city during the week.

SPR-White-Glove-2016spr gloves – a few members have been trialling a new glove from cannibal.  they are lightweight so you can still feel and control your bike, but still offer a level of vibration resistance and crash protection.  they have been designed with a minimalistic view so they can still be worn with other kits and not clash with the spr green.  they are now available to order through the normal channels and more info can be found on the previous post.  the current kit order closes after this weekend, so get your orders in for the upcoming cooler weather.

Ride up Front CCladies only rides – being the first of the month, it is time for the ladies only group rides.  heading off with the saturday groups, there will be a main 1, 2 and 3 ladies only ride.  this is an opportunity for the women to control the pace of the ride and get confident in riding up front.  see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – as last saturday was a bit of a washout and only the real brave (read: stupid) people came out for a river loop, we will schedule in whiteman park again.  the weather is looking a lot better with tops of 30 degrees.  sunday will be an interesting start as the dams ride will be on at the same time.  expect that parking will be hard to get at coode st and we will have to play it by ear as to how we leave the carpark.

i bought my time trial bike way back in 2005 when it was actually a triathlon bike.  i don’t change bikes very often and i guess it it mainly because i am an odd body shape.  long legs with a short torso means that i have trouble getting comfortable on an off the shelf frame.  old tech bike frames like my quintana roo have been superseded by uber-aero looking frames like the shiv and p5.  however, to me that is really just the 1% difference.  the majority of your race still comes from inside of you, and at this point of the race (4kms in) it really, really sucked.  however, what i thought was important was showing the club colours at this event.  and there certainly were a lot of spr green machines flying around the course.

regenerativeBodywork_finalride leader sponsor – the ride leader for march is Regenerative Bodywork Remedial and Sport Massage.  owned and operated by SPR member Emily Lee, Regenerative Bodywork Remedial and Sport Massage utilises a range of techniques such as deep tissue, trigger point therapy, myofascial release & joint mobilisation to effectively relieve pain and tension throughout the whole body.  for more info please see the previous post.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

Feedback1survey feedback – if you filled in the club survey we did last year there was an opportunity to include some written feedback.  if you did add anything, i have responded to each and everyone.  see the previous post to find your reply.

history cyclingmuseum of perth – tucked in behind henry saw which is tucked into grand lane which is tucked into the back of the murray st mall, is the museum of perth.  this month’s exhibition is on our hidden cycling history.  here you will discover the history of cycling in perth and find that it has been here longer than the white tradie ute.  see the website for more details and drop in for a coffee at henry saw.

20160310_130617beyond the bike exhibition– as part of bike week, there is a small exhibition of tony lendrum’s beyond the bike project.  as you can see from the picture on the header, the walls either side of henry saw have been decorated with some of his photos and the riders text is also included.  although, many of you have seen the photos online, this is an opportunity to hopefully attract a few more viewers from passing traffic.  while you are there, check out the museum of perth cycling exhibition and grab a coffee from henry’s.

bike_sticker_heiko-300x225bike stickers – the bike name stickers that we ordered earlier in the year will be available for collection at the coffee shop on saturday.  if you cannot collect them, send an email through to the club and we will make alternative arrangements.

ride routes – i have added in this friday to the ride routes as it is a public holiday and there are a few extra rides on.  just be mindful that the vp 3 dams ride that is on tomorrow is a main 1 pace ride over 150kms.  a couple of years ago we had to leave a few behind by the time we got to mundaring.  for those that are doing the friday public holiday ride, just be aware that Dome will be closed, so someone needs to find a coffee shop that is open.  monday is also a public holiday, so there is lots of opportunities to ride many kilometres this weekend.

12804663_10207482052243576_864156240251221661_nafter months of training for a particular event, you often find yourself at a loose end once the event has finished.  there are a bunch of events coming up just after easter for you to concentrate on.  the dams ride, the midland hilly 100, and even delirium if you are feeling game.  alternatively, you can just ride for fun to allow yourself a reprieve from the grind. (i think i will take the second option).

regenerativeBodywork_finalride leader sponsor – the ride leader for march is Regenerative Bodywork Remedial and Sport Massage.  owned and operated by SPR member Emily Lee, Regenerative Bodywork Remedial and Sport Massage utilises a range of techniques such as deep tissue, trigger point therapy, myofascial release & joint mobilisation to effectively relieve pain and tension throughout the whole body.  for more info please see the previous post.

giro 01giro d’perth – this weekend is the giro d’perth which is a low key ride to involve family or friends that don’t ride a lot.  there are 3 distances and it is more like a treasure hunt than a bike race. it is run by spr member toby hodgson and supported by the club.  last year there were over 500 riders in attendance.  see the previous post for more details.

bike_sticker_heiko-300x225bike stickers – the bike name stickers that we ordered earlier in the year will be available for collection at the coffee shop on saturday.  if you cannot collect them, send an email through to the club and we will make alternative arrangements.

free beginner ladies group skills – held on the 19th march at the coode st carpark, this is an opportunity for any women that may want to take that next step from solo riding to riding with a group.  if you know anyone that may be interested, please pass on the information that can be found on the previous post.

state criterium championships – along with rccc, we will be holding the state crit champs this saturday.  it is an all day affair with juniors in the morning and seniors in the afternoon.  we will need a few volunteers throughout the day to help on rego and drinks.  racing starts at 8:30am and pack up is around 4:30pm, so i am looking at four x 2 hours shifts. let me know via the comments if you are available to do setup (8:30-10:30), morning (10:30-12:30), afternoon (12:30-14:30) or the packup shift (14:30-16:30).  entries close tonight, so see the facebook event page for more details.

10409159_10153219567367204_1412408697106681127_nspr crit champs – as part of the summer crit series, we will also run a spr crit championship.  this will again be a points based system given to placings 1 through 10.  “a” and “b” grade will be given a difficulty multiplier and a leaderboard will track progress.  there are 7 races that we are the final race will be the state champs on the 19th march. your points for the best 5 races will be used in the final leaderboard.  this allows you to have holidays, miss races and still be in the running.  more details on the previous post.

spr road race champs – off the back of the crit championships will be the road race championships for 2016.  there are a number of races identified that riders will accumulate point for.  a change in the scoring system this year to try to allow those that have a go at ‘a’ grade a better chance of getting points.  please see the previous postfor more info.

ride routes – there seems to be a problem with the garmin mapping function and the embedded maps are not showing up.  hopefully, below each map is a link to the actual map which you can then view. i am currently talking to garmin about a fix for this.  if any of the maps that we are using this week don’t have a link, let me know as i was updating them as i used them.

20160310_130617for a lot of our riders, this weekend is the culmination of a number of months training.  the uwct time trial is on tomorrow and the grand fondo is on sunday.  we have over 40 members hitting elizabeth quay (including the footbridge) tomorrow and then over 100 members tackling the testing grand fondo course on sunday.  the grand fondo finishes at elizabeth quay, so if you are not doing anything late sunday morning head on down to cheer the club members across the line.  to top off an already busy weekend, we also have the club agm on saturday after the main ride. come for the agm, stay for the breakfast.  looking forward to next week.

regenerativeBodywork_finalride leader sponsor – the ride leader for march is Regenerative Bodywork Remedial and Sport Massage.  owned and operated by SPR member Emily Lee, Regenerative Bodywork Remedial and Sport Massage utilises a range of techniques such as deep tissue, trigger point therapy, myofascial release & joint mobilisation to effectively relieve pain and tension throughout the whole body.  for more info please see the previous post.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

20160310_130617beyond the bike exhibition– as part of bike week, there is a small exhibition of tony lendrum’s beyond the bike project.  as you can see from the picture on the header, the walls either side of henry saw have been decorated with some of his photos and the riders text is also included.  although, many of you have seen the photos online, this is an opportunity to hopefully attract a few more viewers from passing traffic.  while you are there, check out the museum of perth cycling exhibition and grab a coffee from henry’s.

uwct time trial – the first race of the uwct perth qualifier begins next friday 11th down at elizabeth quay.  a 16km individual time trial will see riders tackle both riverside drive and mounts bay road with a technical diversion through elizabeth quay.  this will be highlighted by the bikes travelling over the new foot bridge that spans the quay.  first riders are away at 10:30am and we have about 40 – 50 spr members registered.  if you are working in or near the city, wander on down to support your club mates.

laurensia rosana

uwct volunteers – spr has committed to manning a feedstation at the grand fondo on the 13th.  essentially, the official part of our job will be to setup and have available hydration and nutrition products as supplied by the race organiser. these products will not be handed out to passing riders, rather, they will have to stop if they need to refuel.  for the spr riders, however, we will be handing out bottles to hydrate our members as they roll by.  the feedzone will be on the outskirts of mundaring, near the sports ovals as you come in from the weir.  we currently have over a dozen volunteers on the day and we thanks you for making yourself available.

giro 01giro d’perth – if you are after a low key ride to involve family or friends that don’t ride a lot, then the giro d’perth is for you.  there are 3 distances and it is more like a treasure hunt than a bike race. it is run by spr member toby hodgson and supported by the club.  last year there were over 500 riders in attendance.  see the previous post for more details.

AGMspr agm and breakfast – as mentioned in the previous post, our annual general meeting is on this saturday morning after the main ride.   this will be held in conjunction with our quarterly breakfast which you may partake in for $15.  as this is an official event, there will be a sign-in sheet for members as you enter.  there is a small amount of official business that needs to be taken care of, but we should get through it quite quickly.

bike_sticker_heiko-300x225bike stickers – the bike name stickers that we ordered earlier in the year will be available for collection at the agm on saturday.  if you cannot collect them, send an email through to the club and we will make alternative arrangements.

free beginner ladies group skills – held on the 19th march at the coode st carpark, this is an opportunity for any women that may want to take that next step from solo riding to riding with a group.  if you know anyone that may be interested, please pass on the information that can be found on the previous post.

10409159_10153219567367204_1412408697106681127_nspr crit champs – as part of the summer crit series, we will also run a spr crit championship.  this will again be a points based system given to placings 1 through 10.  “a” and “b” grade will be given a difficulty multiplier and a leaderboard will track progress.  there are 7 races that we are the final race will be the state champs on the 19th march. your points for the best 5 races will be used in the final leaderboard.  this allows you to have holidays, miss races and still be in the running.  more details on the previous post.

spr road race champs – off the back of the crit championships will be the road race championships for 2016.  there are a number of races identified that riders will accumulate point for.  a change in the scoring system this year to try to allow those that have a go at ‘a’ grade a better chance of getting points.  please see the previous post for more info.

ride routes – aiming for the flattest course possible for saturday to allow any uwct racers a nice warmup before the big day.  then on sunday, we are sending the hills riders down south to avoid any of the road closures from the uwct grand fondo.  however, with the agm and breakfast after the saturday ride, make sure you build up an appetite.

10400734_10154560726714622_2024393629820435785_nthere was a couple of items of feedback from the survey that dealt with elitism and cliques forming within the club.  as a general rule, cycle racing as a sport is all about elitism.  i am better than you as i beat you to the finish or made you hurt on the hill, or dropped you during a ride.  that is fine, as it has it’s place within the sport as there needs to be some winners at a race.  the club was setup to be as inclusive as possible.  it formed out of a group ride that had only 1 group.  there was no fast and main, just a saturday and sunday ride with a coffee at the bell tower afterwards.  people sprinted, dropped wheels, attacked hills and all the general stuff that you did on group rides.  i am not saying that everyone was one big happy family, and if you analysed it close enough, you could easily see groups within the group.  now with over 150 riders on a saturday, this is a bit more obvious.  the fast group is fast.  i mean, i can’t even hold onto the group anymore and i still occasionally race b grade.  however, as far as i am aware, there is no-one in that group that doesn’t talk to me because i can’t keep up.  we split the groups for safety.  so we can safely get through the lights, so people of similar ability are riding together, so the less skilled are not being pushed to their fitness limits.  there is no reason why the coffee shop is also split along the same lines.  the faster groups will always be at the coffee shop first.  it doesn’t mean that you cannot sit next to them.  not one of them fell out of bed and suddenly became an “a” grade rider.  they all started riding crappy bikes at a “slow” pace.  they probably have some good knowledge of what it takes to get better.  instead of worrying about elitism within the club, do something yourself to prove that it doesn’t exist.

12697277_557821714373598_5106863005026618567_obeyond the bike – this coming monday, tony lendrum will be holding round 5 of the beyond the bike project.  this time he will be setting up at city beach, so all of you northerners will have an opportunity to get involved.  please see the facebook event page for more details.  and a late entry, tony is also doing a dirt photo session up at the camel farm on wednesday.  somehow this became round 4.5 event though it is after round 5.  probably something to do with mountain bikers, who know.  facebook event page for this round as well.

uwct training ride – this is the last weekend to have a crack at the uwct circuit.  check out our previous post for more details, but there are 2 start times (6:00am and 6:20am) and 2 regroup times (9:00am and 9:10am).  if you have ridden the course previously, please have a look at the strava segment and if you are faster than 2:09, then you need to start in the 6:20am group.  over the last few weeks the 6:00am group has grown pretty big so we need to move some people into the 6:20am group.  if you are faster than 2:09, then you will still make it to the regroup point with 5 min to spare, so you won’t be left behind.  do the right thing and start in the correct group.

AGMspr agm and breakfast – as mentioned in the previous post, our annual general meeting is coming up in march. as stated in our constitution, all committee positions are vacated every year.  this was included after seeing some of the older clubs struggle with people in positions of power slowly tearing their clubs apart.  now there is nothing to stop the current committee from renominating, but if you are keen to get involved, please put your name forward to our secretary amanda nabi.  remember, there are also sub-committee’s that you can be involved in as a first step to helping the club.

10005979_560771604078609_6915710334451239928_opay attention to road conditions.  don’t do stupid things.  pretty basic stuff really for when you are riding.  unfortunately there have been a few accidents (not in our group) at one of the roundabouts near uwa.  a bit of water and possibly some oil on the road have seen a few people take a spill.  on the thursday earlybird the left hand turn onto cottesloe is a bit rough and i have seen some people take it hard and bounce across the road.  now these are conditions that need to be called so everyone is aware of them as the groups come through.  on the stupid front, people crossing onto the wrong side of the road during a descent, going the wrong way around traffic islands and going around stopped riders to go through a red light are things that we just don’t want to see.  however, i am getting reports that we are.  as repeatedly mentioned in the feedback responses, if you see some behaviours that do not align to the clubs view on safety, speak up straight away to make sure you come home to your babies.

beyond the bike – we have talked about this project a bit, but i think that it is conveying a very important message.  check out the facebook page and have a look at the “say hello to” album.  you can see the excellent quality of tony lendrum’s work and identify all the spr members that have had their photo taken.  what we need to do is share/like/comment on the project so it can be seen by a wider audience to bridge the gap between all road users.

ride routes – lights are now needed on all earlybird rides as sunrise is not until after 6:00am. when it is really dark, front flashing lights are not a good option as they are distracting to the group.  also rear lights that are too bright or facing up to following riders faces are equally annoying.  please be aware of how your lights are affecting other riders and adjust as necessary.
