ride routes 13th – 19th june

1000039_529610693754929_536075595_nso we have reached winter and the only difference i am seeing is the winter sprinkler ban.  clear skies and temperatures in the mid 20″s makes for awesome riding conditions if you can get out during the day.  the nights are long and the sun is now not getting up till after the start of the saturday morning ride.  it does make it a little more difficult to get out of bed, but you need to stay motivated now as when it starts raining, then you have a good excuse to stay in bed.  a fine looking weekend ahead of us, but it will be a bit chilly first off.  make sure you order your spr cold weather gear asap so you can use it before spring arrives.

cyclo-sportif teams –  the spr swan valley cyclo-sportif teams are filling up fast.  if you want to join a team, add your name to the comments on the previous post.

spr club champion – the next race in the championship will be the next pickering brook race in june.  see the current leaderboard to find out just where you sit in the club championships.

ride routes – there has been a few complaints of late around our riders not sticking to the left lane.  the main areas this seems to occur is coming into claremont before stopping at the lights at christchurch.  riders seem to negotiate that last roundabout then relax and drift over the wrong side of the road to blow their nose or have a drink or just sit up.  often i have seen cars and bike coming towards them.  other places like the welshpool road descent can be nbso online casino reviews tricky and you like to have your own space to descend at 70km/hr, but there are also cars coming down that road that you need to make allowances for.  either being on the wrong side of the road, or not giving other vehicles enough space to pass, can be disastrous for the lightly armored cyclist.  please be aware that everyone needs to share the road, and when you are on a rouleurs ride, you are representing the club.  if you see behavior that needs addressing, say something right then and there, not wait to tell someone else about it.  the impacts are better felt in the moment.

With El Prez enjoying a well-earned break in Italy (and getting some good SPR exposure on International television) it falls to me to provide the spiel this week. The main aim is not to get any politicians offside.

It has been a busy week, with my wife away and me tending to 3 teenagers at home. The struggle has been to fit in training in between work, lifts to and from school, sports and jobs, together with doing the cooking cleaning and other jobs said teenagers were meant to do.

However, organising the children and coping with it will no doubt put me in good staid for Saturday morning, when once again the task of organising the Main 1 groups will befall me. With the fine weather still here, I’m expecting a big turnout and so there will be the need to split groups. Ideally, in the interest of safety, the groups should be kept to a maximum of 25.

Please be warned I will come down on anyone who tries and sneaks across the divisions. Get organised beforehand with the people you want to ride with.

The route this week is an old favourite with enough lumps to keep everyone happy.

On the racing front, good luck to those heading up to Kalgoorlie this weekend and well done to all those who participated in the Pickering Brook Race last week, especially the ones who climbed the podium in the various grades.

light me up

bicycle-lights_590_360_80_all_10
are you visible on our morning rides???

winter is coming, and the night is dark and full of terrors.

as we approach winter, the days are getting much shorter.  currently sunrise is 7:00am with first light not appearing till after 6:30am.  as such, if you are doing any of our morning rides you must have a good set of lights on your bike.  by good set, that usually means something a bit better than a small front flasher.

when you are riding alone or commuting to work, a front flashing light is fine to let cars know where you are.  however, they don”t really show you much of the road, so you may not see obstacles until it is too late.  if you are doing a turn at the front of the group, this can be particularly dangerous to those travelling behind you.  also, in the group situation, a front flasher can be hypnotically epileptic.  the people all around you reflect back and it can be very distracting.  so, no front flashers in the group.

rear lights are essential and there are lots of good cheap ones out there nowadays.   there are a couple of points that need to be made around the type and placement of rear lights.  firstly, if you light has a name like “blinder”, “retina burn” or “laser eye surgery 3000” then please be very careful about where you place it and what mode it is on.  it is great that cars can see these lights from many metres away, as this does go well towards keeping us safe.  however, when the rider directly behind you is having trouble seeing due to your light, then it can cause problems further back in the group.  if someone”s light is particularly bad, please let them know (as they probably don”t know) and ask them politely to put it on another mode.

placement is also important as some people like to have the light pointing straight out to give maximum sighting distance.  if you are using your bike more for group riding then solo, then it may be better to point it down a bit.  you will find that it will often light up the ground behind you, effectively giving you bigger light footprint.

some people also like to have their lights mounted on the back of their helmet or back of the jersey.  again the mode set is important as in these positions, the light is usually directed straight into the eyes of the person behind you.  nothing wrong with having extra lights mounted on your body, just take them off the flash, flash, FLASH mode.

so, lights, we need them to stay safe but be aware of how your lights are affecting the other in the group.

  • no front flashers.
  • check your mode.
  • check your placement.
  • if you aren”t sure, ask the person behind you if your light is annoying.

mateship.  australians seem to understand it, the italians maybe not so much.  when it comes to sport and the rules, there is no room for shades of grey as this allows people to dope and then blame an innocent spanish cow.  the rule about collusion in cycling is found at all levels as i have even heard it discussed at a ‘b’ grade race.  it is rare that it is enforced especially in australia as here it is seen as being a good sport.  our club has a similar ethos and i hope it is one that never changes.  whenever someone is in trouble, people need to stop and help.  the whole group doesn’t necessarily have to stop, but you need to make sure that the person can get home safely.  individuals also need to take responsibility for their own actions too.  you can’t just rely on the group to bail you out whether it is a flat tyre or even just knowing the directions.  look out for each other but make sure you are equipped to look after yourself.

can you ever have too many bikes???
can you ever have too many bikes???

so you almost had a new club president this week as there has been massive restructures at work and i was pretty sure that i was gone.  we had already started the plans to move back to victoria where there is another club there that needs a bit of help…  however, i managed to survive the cull and so you will have to put up with me for a while longer.  i am sure that our strong, stable club committee and a strong club culture is greater than the input of just one person and would survive the test of time.

gary update – so i went to visit gary today and he has improved so much since i was in there last week.  no more tubes (in & out) and some of the bandages have come off.  he is complaining about the razors in the hospital, so is getting his son to come in and shave him.  what he is currently waiting for is an assessment of his vertebrae fractures to allow him to sit more upright.  when that happens, things should improve dramatically for him as he will be able to do a lot more.  walking is still a long way off but every little bit of mobility is an improvement.  he was saying that he has had a fairly steady stream of visitors over the last week which he really appreciates.  don’t just stop at one visit, make sure you go see him again so you can keep him updated with what is going on outside the hospital walls.  he has also just moved out of the trauma ward and into a specialist orthopaedic ward.  he is in ward 5H on the fifth floor, room K.  visiting hours are 9-1 & 3-8.  don’t forget the fundraiser link that we have running to help support him in his recovery.  check the right hand sidebar.

so gary pennefather is now out of sedation and has been moved from icu into the trauma ward.  this week he started seeing visitors and a number of close riding buddies were informed so we could see how things went.  he really appreciates the visits as they help pass the time when all he can do is lie on his back.  we are now opening it up to anyone who knows him that wants to visit.  he is in the trauma ward of royal perth and visiting hours are 9-1 and 3-8.  please be aware that he still has significant injuries from a major trauma and this can be quite confronting for most people.  although, he would appreciate the visit, he also understands that some people can feel uneasy visiting in hospital.  he told me today that he will soon be moving to fiona stanley as they have a better rehab section, so this may be more convenient for some people.  as his recovery will be a very long process we, as a club, will be supporting him as much as we can.  as such on the right sidebar of the blog you will see a donate fundraiser button.  please donate what you can to help his recovery as it may be quite a while before he is back at work.

to the accident itself.  we haven’t been talking much about the details and have been concentrating on supporting gary.  the short version is that on a tricky descent, he misjudged his speed on sharp corner and ended up on the wrong side of the road with a car coming the other way.  the car driver did nothing wrong and obviously was quite shaken up by the event.  although these are club training rides and we do whatever we can to ensure that they are as safe as possible, you need to be aware of the course, the conditions and your own abilities.  we will now be changing that ride route to a safer one, but people still need to take care to avoid putting themselves in a risky situation.  stay safe.

Freedom2GoFreedom2Go

With all the nutrients of Aloe Vera Gel combined with Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM, this delicious pomegranate-flavoured drink is ideal for those interested in mobility and provides great nutritional support for sports and active lifestyles.

Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate are two naturally occurring elements that have been shown to help maintain healthy joint function and mobility. Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) is a primary source of bio-available sulfur that the body needs to maintain healthy connective tissues and joint function. Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM combine to provide support for healthy joints.

Add to these ingredients the antioxidant-rich properties of sweet-tasting Pomegranate juice (which contains more polyphenol antioxidants than red wine, green tea or blueberries) – and you have a delicious, winning combination!

NB Contains shellfish: shrimp, crab, lobster.

ARGI+ARGI+

Energy, stamina and performance are important to every fitness enthusiast.   Keep going all day and deliver optimal performance with ARGI+, which provides five grams of L-Arginine per serving, as well as synergistic vitamins. It is a delicious and nutritious drink that rapidly tops up energy stores and is ideal for high-intensity sport.

L-Arginine is an amino acid that’s so potent, scientists refer to it as the “Miracle Molecule.” And for good reason, because our bodies convert L-Arginine into nitric oxide, a molecule that helps blood vessels relax and open wide for greater blood flow. Greater blood flow supports many important functions in our body:

  • Healthy blood pressure levels
  • Overall cardiovascular health
  • Immune function
  • Muscle growth
  • Bone & tissue growth & repair
  • Male sexual function
  • Fat and glucose metabolism
  • Anti-aging hormone production and more

With so many health benefits, it’s no wonder L-Arginine is generating so much excitement. New ARGI+® provides all the power of L-Arginine, plus:

  • Pomegranate – well-known for its strong antioxidant properties
  • Red Wine Extract – to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels
  • And Grape Skin and Berry extracts for cardiovascular and immune system health

Together, these ingredients create a new generation of supplement – one that supports better health throughout your entire body. Just a scoop of ARGI+® mixed with Forever® Natural Spring Water or your favorite Aloe drink helps provide a performance boost to every part of you. Add optimal health to your family’s diet with the power of L-Arginine!

Forever Pomesteen PowerForever Pomesteen Power

There’s no disputing the fact that antioxidants are extremely vital to our health and wellbeing. There is, however, much discussion today among nutritionists as to which fruit is the most powerful antioxidant, or which contains the most Xanthones or has ingredients rating the highest on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value rating. Forever Pomesteen Power has them all with a proprietary blend of fruit juices and extracts, including Pomegranate, Pear, Mangosteen, Raspberry, Blackberry, Blueberry and Grape Seed.

Pomegranate juice has more polyphenol antioxidants than red wine, green tea, cranberry juice and orange juice. In addition, it is a good source of Vitamins A, C, E and the mineral Iron.

Mangosteen is a popular fruit in Asia. Its ORAC value is very high, and it is rich in beneficial Xanthones: a family of naturally occurring nutritional compounds in fruits that are super powerful antioxidants.

Experience the incredible power of antioxidants from Pomegranate, Mangosteen, and other exotic fruits with Forever Pomesteen Power!

Arctic SeaArctic Sea

The human body needs omega-3 fatty acids but is unable to make them: Arctic Sea is rich in omega 3 fatty acids. These nutrients serve several functions, including the make-up of the majority of the protective membrane that surrounds every one of our cells. They are also used by the body as major building blocks for the creation of good body fat, needed in appropriate amounts to cushion and protect our internal organs and keep us warm.

Forever Living Products has formulated a superior nutritional supplement to take advantage of the latest research into the area of nutrition.  Omega-3 is an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid found in salmon and other seafood. Omega-9 is the unsaturated fatty acid found in vegetable products, like olive oil.  By combining Omega-3 with Omega-9, it provides a safe, balanced, mercury-free supplement that can favorably support healthy blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Each softgel has an EPA, DHA and oleic acid, all of which are lacking in most Western diets. The benefits of EPA and DHA include supporting the circulatory system. They are needed for other functions, including the development and health of the eyes and brain, and can support proper joint function.  N.B. Contains fish: salmon, anchovy, Mackerel, Sardines)

Forever Bee PropolisForever Bee Propolis

All-natural bee products are the ideal complement to aloe vera and play an important part in wellness and a healthy balanced lifestyle.

Propolis is the protective substance gathered and used by bees to disinfect and protect their hives. Forever Bee Propolis is gathered from pollution-free regions to assure purity. It is 100% natural with no added preservatives or artificial colours and is also an excellent natural food form.  It’s loaded with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and a rich supply of other elements in trace amounts.
N.B. Contains soy, tree nuts (almond), almond flavour.
