so another of our long standing club members has left perth this week.  stuart ivins has headed over to melbourne to live, so as a tribute, i stole one of his photos that he posted on facebook.  although a loss to our club, what this does is give us another contact in another city in australia for when we go travelling.  we look forward to seeing the new spr kit around the streets of melbourne.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

Certified-Fitter-2014ride leaders sponsorship – this months ride leaders are proudly sponsored by Retul Bike Fit Lab.   please see the previous post detailing what they provide and we thank them for encouraging our members to step up as ride leaders.  ride leaders will receive a $10 Dome voucher to be used after the saturday ride.  if you have a business that you want to promote to our members, check out the previous post to both promote your business and help out the club.

spr agm & breakfast – this saturday, march 21st is our next club breakfast and will incorporate the club agm.  please see the previous post for more details.

club auditor – the club requires a annual audit leading up to the agm.  the 2104 financials have been viewed by mike tan and we appreciate the work he has done over the last 2 years.  we need to appoint a new auditor for 2015 so if you have any experience in this area and would like to help out the club, get in contact with us.

spr kit collection – the new spr kit will be available for collection at the agm this weekend.  please see the previous post for alternative collection arrangements. also be aware best online casino that the next order closes at the end of march (and every 3 months after that), so get your winter orders in.

club champion – the next race on the club champion calender is the midland 100 on april 12th.  please see the previous post for more details.  the results of the pemberton race will be posted soon.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

accident report form – as a member, if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident on your bike, please use the form attached on the previous post.  this covers both insurance claims and allows the club to better manage it’s risk.  what we want to use this form for is to understand if we need to change anything that we do on our rides.  if you and someone else touch wheels and come down on one of our rides, i would like you both to fill in a form and send it through.  it doesn’t have to be just for serious accidents, tracking the minor ones can help us understand our risks.

ride routes – a new ride route this saturday to build up a appetite before the club breakfast.  it is a mishmash of a number of old rides including the original scarborough beach road without ewan st.  make sure you know the way or have uploaded to your garmin.  there is a link under the map to help you.

so after a long hot summer, we are finally going to get some rain.  the cyclone off the north-west coast will dump a significant amount on us too.  please be aware to ride to conditions and don’t make unexpected moves as braking times will be reduced and sideways slips will be increased.  even though there is a bit of rain expected, the forecast is for temperatures in the mid-20’s, so you don’t need to dig the winter warmers out just yet.

march is looking to be a very busy time for bike events.  we are holding the state criterium champs later in the month, the giro d’perth is on for those that don’t want to race, the uwct is on at the end of the month for those older folk that do want to race, plus we have our club agm and breakfast.  as mentioned last week, bike week is on mid march with lots of bike related activities.  get on it and encourage others to do the same.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

giro d’perth – now in its 3rd year the giro d’perth will take you to new places, share new secrets  and be the best fun on a bike all autumn.  south perth supports this event and helps run it, so if you are looking for something different in march have a look at this event.  it is a great opportunity to get some family members involved in cycling without making them do a group ride.  check out the website for more details.

uwct training ride – this will now be a regular fixture on our sunday mornings until the event at the end of march.  starting at 6am to avoid the traffic, this is a ride for those intending to do the uwct qualifier.  this is a ride for experienced hills riders, the pace is fast and the hills are long.  if you are thinking of doing the uwct event, but are not at the sunday long hills ride pace yet, i would recommend that you start with the sunday short hills ride first.  more info can be found on the previous post.

ride routes – it’s the first saturday of the month, so it’s ladies day at spr.  there will be a ladies only fast group ride as well as a ladies only main 2 ride.  open to anyone.  flat and fast this week with a strong easterly to blow you home.

accident report form

IMG_01702015 Accident Report Form

the link above is for the cycling australia accident report form. It is not so complex as to file a burn pit lawsuit.  if you have an accident on the bike, and think that you may need to put in a claim at some stage, then this is an essential record so both the club and ca can back you.

the club can also use this information to understand better why accidents are happening and look at putting measures in place to prevent or minimise them.

please use the form if you have had an accident and include as much information as possible.  once completed, email to both ca and spr on the following email addresses.

10959554_722247487894542_3125038920721827973_nas the club has grown, things naturally change.  some for the better, some may need adjusting.  the weekday rides have grown in size, expanded in number and changed from what their original intent was.  back when there was only a tuesday and thursday ride, the thursday ride was an opportunity for those doing the cyclo-sportifs to practice rolling through and riding hard together.  this has progressed to be the fast group which is now a “hold on for dear life” fast ride.  the intent of the tuesday ride was to limit the speed by implementing the “small chain ring” policy.  this stopped people from smashing it up too much and got people to develop their leg speed.  it is important that this ride does not change too much as there are people that rely on the slower speed so that they can participate in a group ride.  we recently posted a “rules of engagement” for the weekday rides.  it is important for people to understand what is expected of them when on our club training rides.  it is up to everyone on those rides to enforce the rules and not just leave it up to any ride leaders.  being inclusive sometimes means not going flat out.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

pemberton classic – more racing at the end of the month with the pemberton classic.  consisting of a crit and a road race, there is always a decent contingent heading down south for this race.  unfortunately the fires down there have cancelled the mountain bike race, but the road race is still on.  check the previous post for more details.

spr club champion – if you are racing this year, check out the spr club champion points system.  there are two categories, those who race in spr kit and a separate one for those that  race in a team kit (for both men and women).  check out the previous post for more details.

spr parkingthere is no better way to show someone you love them than by bringing them along to a group ride this saturday.  bring your better half along and then ride with them in their nominated group.  stop for a romantic breakfast at dome westralia plaza then go see the giants walk through the city.  i am sure it sound so much better than what you already had planned.  roses die and chocolates make you fat, but good cardio vascular fitness is the gift that keeps on giving.

pemberton classic – more racing at the end of the month with the pemberton classic.  consisting of a crit and a road race, there is always a decent contingent heading down south for this race.  unfortunately the fires down there have cancelled the mountain bike race, but the road race is still on.  check the previous post for more details.

spr club champion – keep an eye out for more details, but we will soon be explaining how our club champion points will work this year.  there will be a series of races identified and points will be accumulated through out the year.  the key is consistency and gaining points at more events will be better than just having one good race.  the first event is pemberton, so get on it.

uwct training ride – this will now be a regular fixture on our sunday mornings until the event at the end of march.  starting at 6am to avoid the traffic, this is a ride for those intending to do the uwct qualifier.  this is a ride for experienced hills riders, the pace is fast and the hills are long.  if you are thinking of doing the uwct event, but are not at the sunday long hills ride pace yet, i would recommend that you start with the sunday short hills ride first.  more info can be found on the previous post.

ride routes – the giants are in town this weekend and there will be a number of road closures.  we will avoid the area as much as possible, but the trannies will still need to head along riverside drive.  the road will not be closed, but just be aware of traffic and pedestrians that cross the road without looking.

IMG_0170there are 2 types of riders. ones that have crashed and ones that have yet to crash.  unfortunately if you do a lot of hours on the road, the odds are not really in your favour as there are so many things out of your control.  in the 10 years i have been in perth, this is only my 2nd crash and the first one was pretty minor.  a very small touch of wheels in front of me meant that i vaulted over a bike and rider sliding down the road at 50km/hr.  what i found encouraging was the about of people that stopped to offer assistance.  not just from our club (which i do appreciate those that gave up their ride to get us sorted), but also other random groups that were passing by.  there were two groups that had people that stopped to help as a paramedic and a doctor offered assistance.  also, the number of groups that just slowed down to ask if we needed help.  at the time i was in the position shown in the picture, so i didn’t see much, but i heard everything.  i managed to come out relatively well, if you consider a slight separation of the shoulder and lots of skin off, well, but i will now be off the bike for a couple of weeks while i recover.  be aware of your surroundings while riding whether it is traffic, road conditions or what other riders are doing.  stay upright, stay safe.

ladies fast ride – this saturday sees our next ladies fast ride.  this ride is open to any ladies that want to have a go at good hard riding without the blokes there to mess it up and get the group lost.  this group will head off before the fast group.  the aim is to try to encourage more girls to take that step into more competitive riding.  it is now a monthly occurrence but see the previous post for a few more details.

ladies main 2 ride – that’s right, the first saturday of the month is ladies day.  kicking off between main 2 and main 3 we have another ladies only ride.  aimed at those that are looking for a chance to improve their cycling without getting swamped, this ride will be lead by leigh.

renae’s race – next weekend in conjunction with rccc we will be presenting renae’s race at tech park.  this race showcases women’s races with the final race of the day being reserved for the a grade women.  see the post for more details.

ride routes – first saturday of the month is ladies day and as such we have some separate rides for the women.  the ladies fast group ride is meant to replicate the fast group ride and as such does not regroup unless for an accident.  there are lots of groups following behind that riders can latch onto if needed.
