ride routes 31st jan & 1st feb

10403523_10153432654303502_3647247951209488883_nwe are pretty lucky in perth.  good weather all year around and even this week of hot weather isn’t bad enough to stop people from riding.  it is good to just have to get a jersey and knicks out of the wardrobe for a change rather than arm warmers, undergarments, vests, long gloves, knee warmers, bootie covers, etc.  the new kit order has been sent through and so hopefully in about 4 weeks we should be sporting the new gear.  we will be running continuous orders every 2-3 months, so if you missed out, you can still get something in a few months.  also, you will be able to get that winter gear before the nice weather disappears.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

Allused Logo (2)ride leaders sponsorship – this months ride leaders are proudly sponsored by Allused, Commercial Equipment.   please see the previous post detailing what they provide and we thank them for encouraging our members to step up as ride leaders.  ride leaders will receive a $10 Dome voucher to be used after the saturday ride.  if you have a business that you want to promote to our members, check out the previous post to both promote your business and help out the club.

beginner ladies session – this weekend, spr will be holding the next free ladies beginners skills session.  this is aimed at ladies that have been reluctant to take that next step and come out riding in a group environment.  if you know someone like that, please forward this onto them and invite them along.  leigh and a couple of the other experienced ladies will take them through a number of riding skills and will finish up at the coffee shop for a brew.  more info can be found on the previous post.

uwct training ride – this will now be a regular fixture on our sunday mornings until the event at the end of march.  starting at 6am to avoid the traffic, this is a ride for those intending to do the uwct qualifier.  this is a ride for experienced hills riders, the pace is fast and the hills are long.  if you are thinking of doing the uwct event, but are not at the sunday long hills ride pace yet, i would recommend that you start with the sunday short hills ride first.  more info can be found on the previous post.

10882335_848555491867158_1612985409992276605_nmr bonner has had a successful surgery and is now back home. please do what you can to help support both mike and davina after their respective crashes.  we are quite vulnerable out there and despite what our beloved premier says, i feel safer (from traffic) when i am riding two abreast in a bunch.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

club donations – we have had a couple of members involved in car bike incidents over the new year. davina summers was hit from behind at an intersection and michael bonner was u-turned in front of in kings park.  as both of them make their recovery (both physical and financially) people were asking what they can do to help.  as most of us do not have readily available medical/legal skills, if you want to make a donation to help out, then there is a donation link to the right of the website.  it is also a timely reminder to ensure that your club membership is up to date as this gives you a bit of insurance in case you have an accident.  please see the previous post for more details.

new 2015 spr cycle kit – the current order for the club kit will remain open until about 9pm 26th, australia day.  after this time any orders will automatically roll into the next order.  currently we are looking at a late feb delivery date and distribution.  see the previous post for further details of how to order. there is a special random prize for 10 lucky members which will reimburse them for a jersey and knicks.

australia day crits – this year we will be helping rccc to run their annual australia day crits on the tech park circuit.  as such we will need a couple of volunteers to help setup and packup, so if you can come down early to the race, it would be appreciated.  first race is at 7:30am, so you can do the earlybird and swing by to help out.   more info can be found on the facebook event page here.  entries are online as this is an open event and they close on friday evening.

twilight crit series – want some midweek crit racing???  check out the previous post for details.

beginner ladies session – at the end of january, spr will be holding the next free ladies beginners skills session.  this is aimed at ladies that have been reluctant to take that next step and come out riding in a group environment.  if you know someone like that, please forward this onto them and invite them along.  leigh and a couple of the other experienced ladies will take them through a number of riding skills and will finish up at the coffee shop for a brew.  mroe info can be found on the previous post.

ride routes – there are a few things happening this weekend which may clash with our normal ride organisation.  firstly, on sunday, there are quite a few of the regular “ride leaders” doing the uwct ride at 6am.  as such we will need someone just to take control of the 7am ride to explain the route and split the groups.  also, on australia day there will be people at the crits, so it will need someone to step up and split the groups if necessary.  there is also the australia day triathlon at point walter.  this will mean that the majority of burke drive will be closed.  both the earlybird and public holiday ride will need to divert down stoneham road.

new years resolutions.  it is the third weekend of the year and so for a lot of people they have already broken or given up on their new years resolution. for spr this year, I would like the new years resolution to be an adherence to the ride etiquette guide.  there have been too many reports coming back in of people riding in a manner which could cause an unsafe act to themselves or other riders.  many of our rides will slow if the group gets split at a red light, so there is no reason for people to go through a red.  this is also the reason why we split the groups at the beginning of the ride.  the smaller the group, the less chance the group has of being split at lights and the easier it is for cars to get passed.  the etiquette guide is there for your safety, lets try to make 2015 as safe as we can possibly can.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

new 2015 spr cycle kit – after a bit of a technical delay, the new 2015 kit is now ready to order.  there will be a final kit sizing session after the ride this saturday.  see the previous post for further details of how to order. there is a special random prize for 10 lucky members which will reimburse them for a jersey and knicks.

infocrank demo/display – this saturday after the group ride, there will be a special demonstration and display of the infocrank powermeter from verve cycling.  toby is a special infocrank affiliate coach so has organised for some special deals for spr members. hang around after the ride and see the benefits of training with power.

twilight crit series – want some midweek crit racing???  check out the previous post for details.

10403523_10153432654303502_3647247951209488883_nwelcome to the new year.  all those new year resolutions being made that involve more exercise mean that we will see a steady increase in numbers over january.  speaking of numbers, as of today we have 440 financial members in the club.  this will change on the 1st of jan as a bunch of race licences will expire.  firstly, it is a testament to the vitality of our club that it continues to grow year on year, but please make sure you renew your licence…you can’t purchase the new kit without it. 🙂

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

ride etiquette – unfortunately there have been a few incidents that our group have been involved in lately that have brought spr to peoples attention for the wrong reasons.  from not stopping as the lights are changing to merging with traffic without looking, and aggressively passing other riders then cutting back in.  we have an etiquette guide that we recommend new riders read before coming out.  it seems that some more experienced riders may also need to have a quick look to refresh their knowledge.  click here now.

beginner ladies session – at the end of january, spr will be holding the next free ladies beginners skills session.  this is aimed at ladies that have been reluctant to take that next step and come out riding in a group environment.  if you know someone like that, please forward this onto them and invite them along.  leigh and a couple of the other experienced ladies will take them through a number of riding skills and will finish up at the coffee shop for a brew.  mroe info can be found on the previous post.

ladies fast ride – this saturday sees our next ladies fast ride.  this ride is open to any ladies that want to have a go at good hard riding without the blokes there to mess it up and get the group lost.  this group will head off after the fast group and before the main group.  the aim is to try to encourage more girls to take that step into more competitive riding.  it is now a monthly occurrence but see the previous post for a few more details.

ladies main 2 ride – that’s right, the first of the month is ladies day.  kicking off between main 1 and main 2 we are trialling another ladies only ride.  aimed at those that are trying to make the jump to main 1 this ride will be lead by leigh and lorraine.  this is the first time this ride is being run, so we will see how it goes.

new 2015 spr cycle kit – sorry for the delay in ordering the new kit.  there were a few issues with the online ordering that we needed to get sorted out before we went live.  hopefully it will be up soon, please keep an eye on the blog for links once they are up. see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – this friday is not a public holiday but lots of people will be taking it off.  as such we will run a normal public holiday ride on friday as well.  please be aware that there will be a little more traffic on the roads as you come back into the city so please keep it together if you have to.

there are a couple of ladies only rides on this saturday.  please don’t see this as a discrimination of sorts.  this is allowing women to have a go without worrying about feeling out of their depth.  it is also an opportunity for other women outside of spr to come along for a ride to see what we have to offer.  any women that come along on saturday do not have to ride in these groups if they choose not to.  some may want the extra pressure of holding onto the fast group, or the gentle draft of a 120kg body cutting through the wind in front of them.

there is also a transitional hills ride on at 6am on sunday.  the distance is longer than the short hills, but the pace will be slower and there will be lots more regroups.  this is to get people used to the hills without worrying about racing up the climbs.  this ride will be lead by shane, and you are reminded to make sure you have adequate food and drink with you.

it’s beginning to smell a lot like christmas.  so close in fact that the ride routes are a day early so i actually get a break tomorrow and not have to worry about it.  spr has had a very successful year and we appreciate the efforts that people have made to achieve this.  we are a volunteer organisation so we rely heavily on the membership to get events off the ground.  at the end of the day, we put on events for our members and to attract new members.  we are currently sitting at 437 members and still growing.  we look forward to 2015 and another successful year of growth in both numbers and events.  we hope that you get some nice bike related christmas presents and please, stay safe over the holiday period.

uwct perth training rides

uwct perthas in previous years, the uwct perth qualifier will be the goal for many of our clubs riders.  unlike previous years, there is no road race, but just a grand fondo style event.  instead of laps around either kings park or rebold hill, the course heads out to the hills.  this means that club training for this event needs to change a bit.  as these rides will take a few hours, sunday is really the only day available.

while the total course goes through kings park, up alexander drive and along reid hwy, the part that we will be concentrating on will be the hills from toodyay rd all the way back into town.

we have mapped a training ride which you can see/download here.  uwct training 107.2km spr sunday

starting this weekend, we will be running the uwct course as an option for the sunday hills rides.  as the course heads up toodyay rd, a road with a bit of traffic and very little shoulder, we will try to minimise the risk, by starting this ride at 6am.  the standard long and short hills ride will still be on at 7am.

now the way that we will run this training will also be a bit different to the standard sunday hills ride.  as it is training for a race-type event, we will be attacking certain sections as if it is a race.  there will be regroups at certain points, but a hard hit out in between.

the exception to this will be the first 25kms out to the hills.  as this is not part of the actual course, we will just roll along, 2 abreast, with riders peeling off when they are tired.  once we hit toodyay rd, it is all on until the turn onto stoneville rd.  probably best to stay single file along this stretch as well.  just after the turn, we will regroup to make sure that we have everyone.  from there, it is on again till the regroup at mundaring dome, on again until the regroup at kalamunda servo.  we will then ride as a group down the zigzag before rolling through helena valley and into guildford.  after this point, we will have to assess the traffic for the final push back into the city for a coffee at dome westralia.  potentially, it may be like the saturday return along guildford where it rolls hard with some attacks on those last rolling hills in maylands.

now, although this ride will be open to all, people must be competent enough in the hills before they come out.  what this means is that they probably need to be able to finish the spr long hills ride on a regular basis, before they attempt the uwct ride.  there will be a number of regroups, but we also don’t want to be out there all day waiting for riders.  it is also important for you to know the course, as there will be long sections where we will not be riding as a group, so you may need to know were to turn.

if you are interested in the event, more info can be found on the event website.

ride routes 20th & 21st december

20141218_052708
thursday earlybird – still a couple of minutes for the numbers to double.

this time next week it will be christmas day.  i hope that you all have many bike related presents under the tree waiting for you to unwrap them. school/public holidays and nice weather means that we will generally have more people out riding, more travelling traffic on the roads and more broken glass to contend with.  please stay safe over the christmas period whether it is on the bike or not.  rides will be on all the normal days, except christmas day.  those without kids/etc can still meet up at coode st at 6:00 for a christmas ride if you like.  boxing day will have an earlybird and public holiday ride as per normal.  i expect to see all the shiny new bike bits making their first appearance.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

out of lycra event – the next out of lycra event is on tonight the 18th december at empire bar in rivervale.  this is an opportunity to catch-up with other club members, but in a setting where you don’t have to try to hold their wheel.  see the previous post for more details.

ladies fast ride – photo by tom barratt

a relatively quiet week this week after having so much on last week.  no ladies fast ride, no fixie ride and no smashfest.  also, for me no week of meetings and christmas parties.  as we head towards christmas, there will be more of the regulars away and we may be a little shorthanded on saturday morning.  please help out where you can as even though there may be some on holidays, the warmer weather also brings out more riders.

yanchep beach criterium – the week after smashfest finishes, if you are still up for some racing, head north and check out the yanchep beach criterium that northern beaches are running.  the northern beaches club does a lot at the smashfest criteriums to ensure that the junior races are run well, so we really need to return the favour and support their race.  more details on the previous post or register here.  entries close midnight tonight.

ride routes 6th & 7th december

10735897_10153336367544908_519987206_nthere is lots happening for spr leading up to christmas and it all kicks off this saturday with our first ladies fast group ride.  this is just part of the organic growth of the club as most of our rides have developed from a need identified from within.  when we first started (pre-spr) there was just one group on a saturday morning, and now look at it.  even the weekday rides started with a thursday morning ride to practice how to do a cyclo-sportif.  it is encouraging to see such growth continuing especially when we think that we may be at the limit of the clubs development.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

Allused Logo (2)ride leaders sponsorship – this months ride leaders are proudlysponsored by AllusedCommercial Equipment.   please see the previous post detailing what they provide and we thank them for encouraging our members to step up as ride leaders.  ride leaders will receive a $10 Dome voucher to be used after the saturday ride.  if you have a business that you want to promote to our members, check out the previous post to both promote your business and help out the club.

thursday night crit training – this thursday we continue our night time crit training in canning vale.  as long as it is not raining, check out the previous post and head on down.

smashfest criterium series – the final race in the smashfest series will be held this sunday at tech park.  it has been a successful series so far with an increase in both the junior an ladies ranks. if you want to have a go at racing, then this is the place to start.  nice easy course and lots of spr support.  just rock up, pay your money and race.  men’s and women’s races will be separate and juniors can race in ‘e’ grade.

smashfest criterium volunteers – we will only need a few volunteers this year as we are paying for traffic management and for st john.  still a handful will be needed to help setup and assist in the rego/drink desk.  racing for juniors starts at 7am so if we can have a couple of people down there at 6:30 it would be great.

spr end of year awards – we are calling for nominations in  particular categories.  have a look at the previous post and let us know who you think is deserving this year.

single speed summer scorcher – our fixie ride is back again this time with a summer ride (i think the last one was a bit wet).  get your bikes ready for this saturday and see the previous post for more info.

ladies fast ride – this saturday also sees our first ladies fast ride.  this ride is open to any ladies that want to have a go at good hard riding without the blokes there to mess it up and get the group lost.  this group will head off after the fast group and before the main group.  the aim is to try to encourage more girls to take that step into more competitive riding.  it is intended that this ride will be a monthly occurrence. we will see how this saturday goes and maybe it will grows to be a weekly ride.  see previous post for a few more details.

new 2015 spr cycle kit – just released.  new design and new manufacturer.  there is an opportunity to try the sizing kit before you order (larger men’s sizes should be available this weekend).  please be aware that we need to return this sizing kit to the manufacturer, so any damaged goods will need to be paid for by the club.  see the previous post for more details.
