The Avon Valley Century Ride for all bikes and new heroes. Enjoy quiet roads, riverside riding, checkpoints in historic towns- its beautiful Western Australia. Ride in groups of up to 30 riders on gravel and country roads.
Choose your group: Heroic bikes-Single and 3 speed bikes- Fast or Slow group – Carbon, mountain bike, any bike.

The National Cycling Centre WA are running 3 X 2 day school holiday programs run by the Ho2MAX accredited coaches this term 3 school holidays, these programs are aimed at juniors 8 to 14 years (younger if ridden track before).
Beginners – For kids that have never ridden on the indoor velodrome and want to give track cycling a go.
Novices – For kids that have ridden the indoor velodrome and wanting to gain more track experience and learn more skills.
Program 1 – Thursday 2nd – Friday 3rd October Program 2 – Monday 6th – Tuesday 7th October Program 3 – Thursday 9th – Friday 10th October
What to bring:
Track bikes are provided if you do not have one.
Helmets are provided if you do not have one.
Please wear shorts or skins and a sleeved top, no loose clothing.

so i read an interesting article during the week on “fat shaming” and was wondering how much this relates to our club. we aim to be as inclusive as possible and this means that we accept anyone who turns up to ride. unless there is something about their bike or they way they are dressed that is particularly dangerous, then what does it matter. things like the “velominati” may have started like a joke, but they have suddenly become a standard for bike snobbery and how we should view other riders. as far as i can see this is crap, and if you are willing to put in the effort and get off the couch and onto the bike, then you are a cyclist. the article finished with a quote from former american president teddy roosevelt from way back in 1910:
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. buddy program – if you are new to cycling and want to get some advice on what to do, or if you are and old hand and have lots of advice to give, then sign up to our buddy program. last program was very successful and we actually had more mentors than mentees. see the previous post for more details.
world championships – this weekend the cycling world champs begins in spain. there are 12 races on, but lets take our best bets on 6 of them. women and men’s team time trial (trade teams), women and men’s time trial and the women and men’s road race. put your best tips in the comments below and the best overall may win a prize, if not just the adoration of other club members.

ride routes – some real summer weather being turned on this saturday with 32 deg predicted with strong ne winds. this will turn around late sunday with thunderstorms and lightning, very, very frightening. hopefully the weather holds off till the afternoon so all the rides and races can be out of the way.
saturday 20th september

so, i had the pleasure of riding along the new freeway bike path a couple of times this week. it was great to see that they actually made it wider and put in retaining walls to stop the dirt edges from reclaiming the path. i suppose what was more surprising to most non-cyclists, was just how many people use that path on a daily basis. with the diversion pushing the riders out onto the main mill point road intersection, drivers certainly got to see more cyclists than they would be used to. as the weather continues to improve, more people will start the commute to work via bike. it usually means that we will also see an increase in riders attending our club rides. if you are one of those fair weather riders, it’s time to dust off the bike and come out with us again.

cycle training involves counting. counting kilometers, counting watts, counting metres climbed, counting calories. i am trying to get ready for some key races coming up and i am counting everything. it gets a bit monotonous sometimes and i am being accused of being a bit over the top with weighing food and counting calories. but cycling encompasses many different aspects which can range from riding for pure enjoyment to absolute scientific precision. i am sitting somewhere in between and am perversely enjoying the scientific aspect…especially if i see some results. pass me the rice cakes.

ride routes – after an absolutely glorious week of weather, the god of spring has decided to spring some rain on us. this weekend could be a little damp so be aware and take care. this also may mean that the groups may be smaller and combined. on sunday, quite a few of the regulars will be down at dardanup flying spr colours in the local tour. make sure you know the ride routes so you can step up and help out.

our sister club down in bunbury is hosting the dardanup tour next weekend and it is a great chance to get some pre-tour of margs team training in.
the race consists of 2 stages; a graded road race of 39kms followed by a team time trial over the same course. the distances are not long and are similar to some of the stages of tomr.
if you are in a tour team, then you should be getting hold of your fellow teammates and entering as soon as possible. registration closes this tuesday and there is already a large field entered. it is a great day out and it is good to support the jaffa club down south.

The Beverley Heroic is South Perth Rouleur’s Spring Gran Fondo. It is a great chance to ride some amazing countryside or help your clubs growing list of quality events.

Start in Beverley for free breakfast before 7.30am and be there for the 8am start then head off to help out.
We need:
Checkpoint- 2 People for Northam- 7.30 to 1.00pm
Checkpoint- 2 people for York- 7.30 to 3pm
Lead Car- 1 driver 7.30am to event finish- leading the fastest 100 milers
2 Follow Cars- 2 drivers 7.30am to event finish- following the main 100 milers groups.

a great day of racing for some last weekend. some good podiums across many grades, but not such a good race for spr in c grade. there was an accident towards the end that saw greg (pictured) with one broken collar bone and the other shoulder dislocated along with a bunch of scraps and bruises. jordan managed to walk away but has 16 stitches in his face and a not so good shoulder. this is the sometime unfortunate outcome of racing and if you are looking at lining up at some races make sure that you are prepared. this may mean having your contact numbers handy, good medical and bike insurance and even having more than 1 jersey (greg had his cut off by the doctors). not trying to scare anyone off racing as it doesn’t happen every race, but better to have thought about it beforehand.

dardanup tour – next sunday there is a great race down south. the dardanup tour is for teams of 4-6 and consists of a short road race followed by a team time trial. we would put a post up later, but get a team together. more info here.

single speed/fixie ride – this weekend those that are brave enough to only have 1 gear will be doing a fixie ride. see more info here.
the beverley heroic – back in the day, there used to be a race from beverley to perth. nowadays, the logistics of these types of races make to very difficult to accomplish so what has been revived is somewhere in between. also, to relive some of that past history, there is an option to do the event on an old time bike. to add to that, some of the roads are dirt. spr will be supporting this event and we will need to source some volunteers. if you can provide a volunteer, then your entry is free. see the previous post for details.
