10393656_1550322718524726_857309775597416136_nan interesting incident last week for a club member on their way to the saturday morning ride.  they were physically attacked and assaulted while riding on the path.  the incident had been reported and the assailant dealt with but from a club perspective there was a slightly disturbing follow up.  after the incident, the member tried to wave down a fellow spr rider for help, but they refused to stop.  last week i wrote on the blog about helping anyone that is in need because you never know when you may need help.  in this case if someone (especially another spr member in kit) is asking for help, then it really shouldn”t be too much to ask you to stop.  the ride route actually went back past the incident location, so even if you had to stop, you could have jumped on as the groups went by.  bottom line.  look after one another.

1972387_10153037545799908_7432437087624873339_ni was out on a recovery ride by myself the other day and came across a lady on the bike path struggling to adjust her brakes after putting her front wheel on.  i asked her if she needed some help and it was a pretty basic fix to get them connected again.  i also explained to her how a quick release works as she had just used the lever to wind it on tight.  pretty basic stuff, but invaluable to someone that is just starting out riding.  no-one fell out of bed and knew everything about bikes, so we have all been there before.  if you see someone at the start of the ride that has something not quite right, or see someone on the side of the road with a flat, ask them if they need some help.  one day it could be you.

10473413_688006281278821_1085396466325092427_nride routes are out early today as i am home looking after #1 son who was sick last night.  a few years ago i used to love having a day off midweek as that meant that i could head out solo on the bike to to crack out a metric tonne or climbs some hills that we don’t do on sundays.  however, those types of things pale into insignificance when compared to watching your kid ride a bike unassisted for the first time; seeing them get out of the saddle for their first “climb”; get told to make the ride longer, just so they can hit 20kms for the first time.  #1 son also got his first road bike this year with the intent of having a go at the tech park crits over the summer.  don’t be outdone by an 8 year old.  get out there and make your own “firsts”.

SPR Velo Solo Spring Classic

For something a little different, we will be kicking off the inaugural Velo Solo Spring Classic to be held on Saturday 30 August.  The Velo Solo Spring Classic is open to anyone who rides a single speed bicycle, be it a track bike, fixie or free hub single speed.  The only requirement being you must have only 1 gear.

We will be starting with the normal Saturday group at 7.00am at the Coode Street car park and will finish at the Dome.  We will be using the route around the river below, which has the majority of the hills removed.  There will still be a few climbs.  However, these are minimal and we will slow down after each climb for a regroup.

The group pace will be dictated by the slowest rider and the group will wait for all riders.  There will be one optional intermediary sprint point at Port Beach to see who can spin the fastest.

If we can come up with some categories and judging criteria there may even be an award for the best bike.

So now that you have some notice, get your Velo Solo cleaned and polished, start scouring Gumtree for a Velo Solo or get out the tools and remove those superfluous 9 or 10 cogs.

Proposed route: http://connect.garmin.com/course/7413064

Cheers

in·spire – to affect, guide, or arouse by divine influence.

mo·ti·vate – to provide with an incentive; move to action; impel.

what helps you to get on the bike when it is predicted to be only 5 degrees this saturday.  do you get inspired by seeing the picture of jeremy climbing the stelvio??? or are you motivated to ride on the day that your mate doesn’t, just so you can stay a step ahead.  it has been wet and it is still cold, but a perth winter is still better for riding than an english summer, so on your bike.

ride routes 26th & 27th july

IMG_3991bthis week is women”s cycling week (20-27th july).  there is a call out to show your support via social media and people are being asked to tweet or facebook themselves with the comment – I support women”s cycling #owntheroad #womenscycling.  there is a lot of disparity in our sport with teams like sky having a budget that could easily fund all women”s teams many times over.  many women in the professional peloton are not actually paid to race, but still do it anyway.  we have lots of women in our club that are discovering racing for the first time and we want to do whatever we can to support them.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

ride routes – hopefully the rain will stay away (at least until we finish our ride).  i was asked the other day if we cancel rides in bad weather.  i said that someone usually turns up no matter what the weather.  if this is you, then maybe a combined smaller group is the go.  stay safe.

WATSON_00003871-019how bizarre has this tour been with so many of the big names crashing out in the first week.  doing the best training, having the best nutrition and being in the best form of your life means nothing if you aren”t there are the end of the race.  or, in our case, there at the end of the ride.  many of the crashes in the tour have been caused by inattention or not riding to conditions.  make sure that you are on the ball during our club training rides because the crash that you cause, may result in someone else coming off worse.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

bike stickers – as seen in the previous post, the club is subsidising bike name stickers so others in the club know who you are.  this is a great deal and will also help members know who they are actually riding with.  last chance to order.

tour of margs – last chance to get your name down for a race team.  see the previous post for more details.

ride routes 12th & 13th july

you may have noticed the new website design was implemented over the weekend.  initially there were a few things missing (like a login portal) but most things have been fixed now.  if there are any further issues, let us know and we will try to get them fixed as soon as possible.  the website is our main contact point for many people discovering us for the first time.  the look of the website is just one aspect of what they see.  the content is also important as it can change people’s opinion of our club very quickly.  please make sure you think before you post anything on the blog or forum as we want to keep the content as positive as possible.

ride leaders – support the club and help us become ambassadors for the sport in the public eye. put your name down as ride leader to ensure that the group ride is safe and organised. sign up here.

tour de france night – dinner to celebrate the tour de france.  see more info on the previous post.

dome discount – the relationship that we have with dome is a very good one and as a club we would like to keep it this way.  the discount that is offered to riders is not a contracted discount and as such may or may not be applied to your purchase.  however, the discount applies to those people that are wearing the club kit that actually shows “dome” on the front.  if you are not showing the logo, then what is dome getting for their money?  this is also true for club members that come in at other times wearing casual clothes.  if you are not wearing the club kit and you demand a club discount, be prepared to be disappointed.

ride routes – c c c c cold start to both saturday and sunday expected so rug up.  make sure that you know the ride routes so you don’t get lost if a blizzard comes in.
