ride routes 8th & 9th june

hands up if you are sick!  half of work seems to be off at the moment.  i have had a lingering cold for the last 2-3 weeks.  it comes and goes and the month of may was a bit off a write off (bikewise).  the family has also been knocked around as well, so it has been a wonderful couple of weeks.  well, winter is here and we have had some pretty cold days.  the video above, was main 1 on the first day of winter and you can see how much everyone was rugged up.  however, they are great rides as they are usually dry and riding hard certainly warms you up.  so, no excuses.  if it is cold, just put more clothes on.  see you on the road.

ride routes – nothing outstanding this week in the ride routes.  it may rain, it will probably be cold.  same time, same place.  see you there.

winter is coming.  not only is the official start to winter upon us on saturday, after an extended period of warm weather, we are in for a frigid start to the weekend.  friday morning has a predicted 2 deg with saturday not much more than that.  i hope that you ordered up big at the previous kit order, as full finger gloves and jackets and leg warmers will be the order of the day.  just think of it like the second last stage of the giro.  hope your gears don’t freeze.

racing – good luck to those making the trip to kalgoorlie this weekend for the goldfields race/ride.  there is also the first in the cyclo-cross series starting this weekend behind the velodrome.  more info can be found here.

boot camp – tuesday morning for those that are after something a bit different. more info here.

focus group kids ride – first saturday of the month, so we have your kids ride on at 9:30am.  bring the kids for a leisurely ride along the bike path.  last month we had 3 families and about 7 kids. get involved.

ride routes – i have managed to get the majority of the saturday and sunday ride routes mapped to the garmin site as well as a couple of the weekday/special ones.  this should make transfer to a garmin unit easier.  the public holiday means another 2 rides to add to your weekend.  monday earlybird is usually under subscribed (just rob on his own this week) but is a really good ride.  check it out since you have the time.

juniors. so cute in full kit.
juniors. so cute in full kit.

not much to talk about for the ride routes today.  i have probably forgotten about some race to promote, or some event that we need volunteers for, or it is actually just a quiet period for us. the giro is coming to a close this weekend with the last 3 out of 4 stages set to create some fireworks.  that is as long as the riders can actually ride up the mountains.  a front of cold weather is expected to bring sub-zero temperatures to some of the climbs and there is talk of there being a route change.  cadel is sitting pretty in second, but i can’t see him making a dent unless nimbali has a bad day.  a few late nights are on the agenda starting with the mountain time trial tonight.  it also makes it hard to get up in the morning for our rides, but at least it doesn’t snow in perth.

earlybird lights – it is pretty much pitch black for the earlybird rides now.  as such you need to make sure that you have adequate lights on your bike.  by this i mean not just a little flashing LED but a decent set that both shows you the road and lets others know where you are.  people will spend thousands on their bike and hundreds on shoes, but then skimp on the bike lights.  when you are in the group, a flashing front light is not only useless, but really annoying if you are riding next to it.  do the right thing and get a good set of ay-ups or exposure joystick and stay safe out there.

ride routes – there has been a bit of discussion lately about the size of the saturday groups and the speed of some of the riders.  as the fast and all the mains do the same route, there is an opportunity for some of the faster main 1 riders to have a crack at the fast group.  if you get dropped or split at the lights, then you can get picked up by main 1 coming along quite soon after.  if a few of you work together, it can be a challenge to try to stay ahead of main 1 whilst trying to catch the fast group.  with traffic lights, etc, it is sometime possible to catch back up and still get a good solid ride in.  we have had a number of main 2 riders step up to main 1 but not so many main 1 take the jump to fast.  have a go, suck wheel if you need to.  no-one will care if you don’t do a turn.

armadale kermesse

Race parking registration start finish mapjust some last minute info for those doing the kermesse tomorrow.  There is no access for vehicles to the kermesse circuit as there are full road closures in place.  riders must park at the arena and then make their way (i.e. ride) up to the registration tent which is shared with the grand fondo.  there you collect your number and timing chip from midland cc.  you then make your way down to xavier college where the start finish line for the kermesse will be positioned.  if you are in the second race (grades a&b) be aware that there may be riders still on the course.  there are toilets at the college for riders to use.  after the race, you need to take your number back up to the registration desk along with your timing chip.  presentations will be near the registration after the completion of the second race.

race numbers and timing chips have already been assigned and each grade will have a different colour number to avoid confusion with multiple races on at once.  the start list for the various races can be seen below.

so i am enjoying the giro so far this year.  unfortunately it is not for a very sportsman like reason.  i am enjoying that wiggo isn’t going well.  all the expectations and bluster of how the super team will blow the race apart haven’t materialised and we now have a domestique higher up the standing than the team leader.  fair enough, he has been sick on the climbs, but descending like a wuss didn’t help his chances.  it is also good to see cadel going well.  i am embarrassed to say that during the last big mountain stage i was expecting him to falter and waiting for him to fail.  luckily he proved me wrong and was there to the end. this weekend involves a couple of big mountain stages, so i am looking forward to a lack of sleep again.

armadale kermesse – we now have enough volunteers for this race as per the previous post.  thanks for all that volunteered.  we have good numbers racing the event as well.

spr boot camp – starting next week, a bit of cross training is being offered to keep you fit over winter.  see the previous post for details.

ride routes – some big logistics problems this sunday as there are a number of events on that we don’t want to come across during our hills ride.  firstly the armadale grand fondo rules out anything around roleystone then the bwa cyclosportif rules out anything around mundaring, observatory area.  at the end of the day, we cannot totally avoid them, so just be aware of other road users.

armadale kermesse volunteers needed

Grand Fondo Logosas you know we are involved with the armadale kermesse that is being held next weekend (sunday 19th).  this part of the wider event that also includes the grand fondo on that morning.  the kermesse is being held over 5 grades (a-e) with men and women racing together.

this race event is a collaboration between three clubs as well as pihc who is the original organiser.  on the day, midland will be handing registration while rccc and spr will be running the on course support.  what this means is for us are a few volunteers for the afternoon for a few jobs, primarily finishline judging, lead/support car driver and “mechanic (wheel changer).

cars will be supplied by renault so the drivers just need to lead the race, or drive the commissaires around.

there are two racing sessions, 12:30pm grades c, d & e then 2:30pm grades a & b.

in the first session we need 3 line judges and 4 drivers/mechanic.  in the second session, we need 3 line judges and 4 drivers/mechanic.  this is under the basis that rccc will also be providing a few volunteers.

so, please put your name in the comments below and i will fill in the volunteer table.  it is possible that you can do the grand fondo and then help out in the kermesse, or do the first race and help in the second.

first session 12:00pm + setup
drivers/mechanic line judges
1  Jason Gordan 1 Julian Johnson
2  Heiko Potzeldt 2 Mike Bonner
3  Travis Kean 3  Anke Hoskins
4  Greg Murray 4
second session 2:00pm + packup
drivers/mechanic line judges
1  Jason Gordan 1 Anna Massey
2  Travis Kean 2 Alison Ramm
3  Justin Tan 3 Amanda Nabi
4  Greg Murray 4 Darren Taylor

ride routes 11th & 12th may

cycles of life - which stage are you up to
cycles of life – which stage are you up to

what a wild week for weather.  after having an extended summer we have finally hit a spell of cold, wet and windy.  perfect weather for sitting up late to watch the giro as you know that you won’t be up at pre-dawn for the earlybird ride.  however, if you did manage to head out (des & laurensia – i saw on strava) then extra kudos to you and full belgium points. hopefully, we can get some riding in before the next downpour.

kit orders and collection – if you still haven’t collected your kit you can do so via the instructions on the previous post.  if you are looking at ordering new kit, the orders close this weekend and information on how to order can be found on this post.

road id – as in the previous post it is important to carry some form of id on you while you are riding.  brendan found out the hard way that with all his info in his locked phone, it was hard for his riding companions to access any of it while he was unconscious.  graham has negotiated a 20% discount with road id that is only valid till the 19th may.  make sure you take advantage of it.

armadale kermesse and grand fondo – you may have heard about this event that PIHC is putting on.  catering for all types of riders as it has both a grand fondo participation ride plus a kermesse (longer criterium) race on at the same time.  although, we would like as many people to enter and support this event, we are also running the race with rccc.  this means that we will need some volunteers as well.  we will post more info this week as to what jobs we need filling.

spr boot camp – a bit of cross training is being offered to keep you fit over winter.  see the previous post for details.

ride routes – hopefully the break in the weather will allow a bit of riding over the weekend.  i am slowly getting the sunday ride routes remapped into garmin, but it is taking a while.  the long course is a bit tricky at the start so make sure you have a look at the route.  remembering that it is mother’s day so the coffeeshops are bound to be busy.

saturday 11th may

may the force be with you
may the force be with you

this saturday is international star wars day.  if you are a geek, you will understand why.  if not, then look at the date.  extra kudos for anyone that can make some dubious link between cycling and star wars this saturday (star wars undershirt, light saber headlights, full storm trooper outfit).  any storm trooper helmets will need to be approved to australian standards.

focus kids ride – this saturday is the first of the month and as such is the kids focus ride.  bring your kids down and take them for an easy ride along the foreshore.

kit collection – you can collect it from North Perth at a time that suits you, or have it posted.  See previous post for more details.

spr ladies ride – monday 6th may is the spr ladies ride.  meet under the narrows (city side) for a 5:30am river loop – thursday route but with all the shortcuts.  the group waits for everyone and even goes ahead if it is bucketing down with rain!

armadale kermesse and grand fondo – you may have heard about this event that PIHC is putting on.  catering for all types of riders as it has both a grand fondo participation ride plus a kermesse (longer criterium) race on at the same time.  although, we would like as many people to enter and support this event, we are also running the race with rccc.  this means that we will need some volunteers as well.  as we get closer to the event, we will post more info as to what jobs we need filling.

spr boot camp – a bit of cross training is being offered to keep you fit over winter.  see the previous post for details.

ride routes – nothing too outstanding this week.  nice and fast with a tailwind on saturday and a monster hill for the long course on sunday.  take advantage of the break in the weather to get a few kms in over the weekend.  for those on strava, there is a new challenge called the may massive to track who is doing the most k’s.
