SPARTA AGAIN!!!

racing.  funny how often it is more about tactics rather than how strong you are.  boonen was strong.  really strong, but no-one wanted to work with him to chase down spartacus.  funny, how no-one wanted to help the sprinter pull back a break so that it came down to a sprint finish…anyway, it was a good race and confirms cancellara’s position as one of the best riders in the world.

next race is the amstel gold race this coming weekend.  a race sponsored by a beer company can mean only one thing.  crazy beer fuelled fans lining the course.  this will be a different kind of race so look for riders like the schlecks, sastre or cadel making more of an appearance.

oh, and a big thanks to SBS for giving WA a delayed LIVE telecast of the paris-roubaix.  with the winner actually crossing the line 2 hrs beforehand, it is such a consolation to know that we didn’t get to miss out on a couple of 3 yr old documentaries from the USA and UK.

spr cycling cap

i am in the process of designing the gloves, shoe covers and socks for the run of accessories that we need.  there is also a cycling cap, but i need some ideas of how you would like it to look.  attached is the design template with our name/logo.  get out your coloured pencils and send me your ideas for a cycling cap.  i will post the best ones and we can then vote on which one will adorn our skulls during winter.

you can email me your ideas.

member benefits

i have converted the “companies we support” page into a members benefits page.  here i have listed the info on the helmet deal and some other things as well.  i am chasing up some other benefits as well, so hopefully our members will be able to get a few deals.

if you have a company in which you would like to give some discount to our members, then let me know via email and we can add it to the page.

ride routes 10th & 11th april

start point – due to the redbull air race taking over our carpark we have had to move the start point for the next couple of weeks.  on the 17th & 18th we will probably have to move again, but in the mean time we will be starting at the douglas ave carpark just up the road a bit.  you can find a map here.

kit collection – there are a few more kits that have not been collected.  i will not be bringing them to the coffee shop anymore, so if you need to collect you can arrange it with me via email.

sunnies – oakley radar path will be the club standard.  the base model (which is what we will go for) is black frame with a grey lens.  cheapest place i can find is here.  if three of you go in together, the freight is free.

races – there are a few races coming up.  there is a mtb race this weekend and a cyclo-sportif and road race next weekend.  see the relevant webpages for more details and add to the comments if you want to join in.

training groups – the names of the groups have changed as per the suggestions we received.  sorry kimbo, we didn’t follow your suggestions but i may have to borrow your copy of the karma sutra to find out what we could have renamed the advanced group.  we will be splitting the main group into a fast and slow this week as even though it didn’t look that big in the car park last week, there were quite a few riders in that group.  ride routes are listed below.  make sure you know where you are going.

saturday 10th apr- all rides start at douglas ave carpark at 7:00am

development group – spr saturday 35.48km (novice shelley)

transitional – spr saturday 41.73km (canning vale reverse)

main 1 & 2 – spr saturday 50.47km (hale rd reverse)

fast – spr saturday 54.03km (maddington & welshpool)

sunday 11th apr- all rides start at douglas ave carpark at 7:00am

transitional – spr sunday 64.27km (welshpool & north lake) but following the fast group route to the hills

main – spr sunday 61.14km (welshpool & weir rd) but following the fast group route to the hills

fast – spr sunday 101.86km (welshpool & mundaring & kalamunda)

tuesday transitional ride 30th mar

sorry for the late posting, but for those that were on this ride last week you may remember the guy that joined in half way and then left early after hitting the bituman in east freo.  i had a few people ask me if we had heard how he went, so here is his email.

peter.

After waiting 5 -10 mins my wife turned up and took me home to be cleaned up. Then off to SKG to have the pretty pics taken which revealed a shattered clavicle (well broken anyway with a couple of loose pieces of bone floating around). My wife then used her influence and arranged for me to see Peter Hales the next morning with an empty stomach (that was hard). He gave me one real option which was to hang around til the end of his list and have a plate screwed in to stabilise the clavicle.

So, the nice people at Bethesda gave me a private room with a multimillion dollar view to hang around and wait for him to do his days work in order to get to me. Glad I had the view!!! Very late afternoon, they wheeled me down to the theatre  and made me sleep. Woke up 3 and a half hours later feeling really really hungry having not eaten since 2000hrs the previous day. They finally gave into my nagging and gave me food at 2230 hrs and although I can’t remember what I had, I can say it was the nicest meal I’ve had in a while!! Ok, I’ll stop with the theatrics now.

Mr Hales spent over 2 hours putting my clavicle back together and send me out of theatre. The result was that I could move the arm the next morning subject to pain limitation from the operation wound and the pain was gone, apart from the cut he made. Here I am on Monday able to move the arm fully with very little discomfort despite having zero painkillers since Sat night. I’m feeling ready to get back on the bike again although I may leave that for another week or so just to be sure. So, good outcome!

The downside is that I am in big trouble with “the Boss”, coz our planned Easter trip had to be cancelled and many phone calls made to reverse the bookings and arrangements made. Everyone was sympathetic and we ended up with 100% refunds even from the sites that stipulate there is a no refund policy!!! Just have to make time later on….or at least she will, coz I’m retired and every day is a holiday.

May I say a big thanks to your riders for the care and help they gave me at the time of the incident. I can’t remember exactly what happened but as Forrest Gump says “S#@* H^$$%@*”. I’m also up for a new helmet! Just who are these idiots who say we don’t need them????

I’m sorry about stuffing the ride up, but guess I gave you all something different to talk about at the coffee shop afterwards. Once again, thanks for your care and assistance and will see you gain on the track sometime…..perhaps from a distance!!!

                Regards

                Ralph Treasure

footnote:

Unfortunately, I don’t remember all that much of the incident. I think my adrenaline had kicked in to deal with the pain. Did appreciate the help at the time though and one thing I do remember is a girl telling me to have it pinned if it was broken as it would speed recovery. You can tell her she was spot on!! Six days and full movement and no painkillers!

Hopefully will be back on the track in a week or so, when the wound of the operation has healed.

easter monday – public holiday ride

ride report by peter

i haven’t been out on a public holiday ride for a while, but as there were 2 public holidays, this weekend, i managed to sneak out on the monday session.  as previously posted, the closure of our normal carpark meant that we had to meet just around the corner.  everyone seemed to find it ok so we headed out along douglas.  i looked back at the lights and realised that we had a pretty big turn out.  luckily, being a public holiday, most people were still sleeping off their hangover and there was little traffic on the road.

as we passed by the uni, i drifted back and did a head count, while most people tried to interrupt me by shouting out random numbers.  about 55 or so on the road meant that we were bound to get split at the lights sometime.  heading towards shelley and we passed the old pappas group coming the other way.  it made our group seem a bit smaller, but not that much.  and anyway, it is not the size of the group, but how big it can grow that is important…or something.

anyway, we had to ease up a bit once we hit shelley to allow for the group to catch up after negotiating the small section of bike path.  it is a shame that it isn’t a bit wider through there even if it is just for bikes as the majority of the groups must pass through there at some stage.  once we were all together, the hammer went down at the front initiated by lisa and jason on the tt bike.  davina, chris and jarrad headed off in pursuit and i had to jump around the guy in front of me that was not in the chase to close the gap.  i finally caught onto the back only to find that chris offered little in the way of wind break.  i was still struggling to hold on when jarrad moved to the back and cut a fine hole in the air for me.  jason was starting to tire and people were doing turns to keep the pace high.  the next group was a bit of a way back and we were determined to maintain that gap.  i did a turn at the front but pretty much had nothing once i was overtaken.  the cumulative affect of holiday, sickness and injury have left me lacking a bit on the endurance side.  in other words, i can only fake it for so long before it all goes to crap.  i sat up and watched the other groups fight it out.

we regrouped at the top of the hill and set off through mt pleasant.  it was a bit confusing here as there was a guy that went off the front which some people then tried to keep up with, but i wasn’t sure if he was meant to be with us or not.  michael and i just let them all go and set the pace for the rest of the group.

we got back onto canning and made our way down to the burke drive.  with little traffic around, it was easy to make the turn and the group didn’t get split too much.  a short delay in getting the group back together and we were off again.  well not really.  no-one wanted to make the move so i sent chris off the shake things up.  this got the ball moving and the pace quickened.  i was determined to be a passenger this time and sat in the best i could so that i could still be there for the hill.  now i am the one that maps the ride routes that we take, but even i totally forgot that we did the turn up page st to tackle stock rd.  i had my mind set on the shorter straight ahead option when i heard davina call out left turn.  ok.  i guess we are doing the hill.  seems my lack of attendance on the public holiday ride was to blame for not actually knowing the route.

we set off up the hill and the slowing for the corner had allowed most people a chance to catch up.  there was a general swamping of riders on the short first section as riders all surged to get position.  i used to do this hill as a hills repeat session a while back so i knew what to expect.  i took it easy up the first section, then hit it harder once we turned the corner.  a lot of the guys that had earlier sprinted up the hill were not sucking in oxygen and were easily picked off by the halfway mark.  although, mike b made short work of the hill and flew past me like i was struggling myself.

we reached the top and i turned back after getting my breath back to make sure that we had the last of the riders up the hill.  once they arrived, we carried on only to find that the rest of the group had continued.  there were a few of us, so we stuck together along preston point rd until mike b and i decided to catch up with the group to make sure that they regrouped properly after left bank.  we did a two-up time trial and swapped turns all the way along preston point and left bank but didn’t catch the group till after the speed humps.  once there it seems that davina had words to them about not regrouping properly on the hill so they were all waiting nicely at the bus-stop.

we headed off towards cottesloe and i had made the call to not push hard until dalkieth as it would be busy and the group was a bit big.  the pace stayed down and was a very pleasant trip through cott, although the cooler weather kept the crowds away.  kimbo made a call halfway along marine parade as a couple of girls were just getting out of a car.  on closer inspection, it seems that one would have only been about 13 and the other was her mum.  apparently, the new oakleys can get prescriptions put in the lenses.  it may be an option for him.

we actually made it through the next few sets of lights with the group intact and we were on the home straight heading through dalkieth.  i can see why so many groups use this stretch of road.  low traffic, curvy roads, small rises, all the things that make a strong finish.  somehow i ended up at the front as soon as we started, so i decided to smash myself early on to save the embarrassment later.  i hit the chicanes hard knowing that it is always easier to make the corners when you are at the front and then kept the pressure on down the dip.  up the otherside towards waratah ave and i was trying to do my best cancellara after being inspired by the flanders tour last night.  got pretty much to the top then swung off to let davina take over.  i got back in the group about 6 or so wheels back and tried to recover.  after a few minutes i was still sucking in o2 and then jason time trialled to the front.  this put the pace up a couple a km/hr more and i was pretty much done.  i flicked the elbow to let the person behind me know i was dropping off and sat up to recover.

i watched as rider after rider whizzed by and reminisced on what once was and and what would take a while to get back.  i caught up with a few more riders and we grouped up to make our way back along mounts bay together for safety reasons.  onward to atomic, which was already busy, but seemed to cope ok with the sudden influx of lycra.

a good ride today and the group seemed to cope fairly well even with the bigger numbers.  if anyone wants to let me know what happened at the end of the ride, add it to the comments.  hopefully i will be out for anzac day later this month…hopefully.

SPARTA!!!!

for those that stayed up last night to watch it on the net, it can be summed up in one word – awesome.  i was so tired after the hills ride, but as soon as spartacus and tommeke attacked on the 20% cobbled climb and left everyone else in their wake, there was no way i was going to bed.  then when cancellara just cruised past boonen on the final climb, it was such an awesome display of power that i made me want to get on the time trial bike.  what this really means is now who do you tip for paris-roubaix next weekend.

for the tipping comp, there were 6 winners this race, as cancellara was a popular choice.  this meant that team solwest is now equal 1st with team bigchainring on 180 points.  team globalbean is roasting nicely in 3rd spot but only because team captain poser & tha canine shepards failed to get any point even though they tipped boonen.  a check of the records found that they used that rider for the sanremo race and therefore recieved no points this race.

paris-roubaix is the next race on this coming sunday so make sure you get your tip in.  there are still 4 races left and there is money for getting a race winner correct, so don’t worry if you are behind, you can still get prizes.  just remember if you have already picked a rider then don’t pick them again…i am checking.

weekend start location – brought to you by redbull and the south perth council

since the redbull air race has pretty much taken over most of the southern shoreline, we will need to change our start location for the next couple of weeks.  there was no notice by the council, but the carpark we usually meet in has been totally fenced off and is now a restricted area.

as some people have to drive to the start, we need a carpark to start in.  the one behind the boatshed cafe is also half taken up by redbull stuff and there is a good chance the rest might follow.  however, just behind our normal spot is another carpark on douglas ave.  this should be fairly empty as it is not directly accessed from mill point rd.  have a look at the map below, but you have to drive down pepper st, jubilee then douglas to get to it as douglas is blocked from the mill point rd end.

on the actual redbull day, we will probably have to start back up on angelo st as pretty much all that area will be restricted.

sunday 4th april – advanced ride – f_ckenberg et al

ride report by peter.

funny thing about riding.  when you are fit and healthy you love it.  when it is calm and sunny you love it.  however, when you are lying in bed and it is still dark outside because of the cloud cover, and the wind is strong enough to make that whistling noise, and you can still hear the rain dripping off the roof from the previous shower….well, that’s when it becomes less appealing.  it showed in the numbers today as we started with only 21 riders.  well down on the 60 – 70 that we have recently had on a sunday ride.  being a looong weekend as well would have dropped out a few, but i think that the first real wet weekend in such a long time may have tested some people resolve.

as such, we only had one rider for the transitional group.  he resigned himself to doing the intermediate group ride so i hope that he made it ok.  the groups would split at brookton hwy with the intermediate group heading straight up while the advanced group would crisscross from mt nasura back to roleystone.

the wind was up but not too bad as we headed down albany hwy.  there was only a light shower, but we probably got wetter from the road spray on the way down.  as we turned onto brookton hwy, sam decided that the hills were not for her today and turned back.  the groups made the split at the hardware store and we were left with only 9 riders to tackle the climbs today.  when i had mentioned at the start that we were doing the f_ckenberg today, there were moans of despair from the group.  however, some people hadn’t done it before so it was going to be a new experience.  i was riding next to daniel when we turned to see the first view of the climb.  “ahh crap” i think was his assessment.  “wait till we turn the next corner” i replied as it only gets better.

this was also going to be a good test of my knee problems.  after the aborted attempt of hill climbing last week, i was ready to see how it held up today.  the f_ckenberg max’s out at about 21% so if anything was going to have cartilage snapping the tendons flying, it would be this.  there were a few niggles, but it turns out that fitness was what i needed the most.  after an early break by dean and daniel, mike b scampered up the hill to take line honors.  i managed to overcome an early deficit to claw back to a solitary point on the climb.

f_ckenberg – mike b, dean, rob, daniel, pete

rob and phil are both looking at lining up for the half ironman in a months time so even though they are not regulars in the hills, they certainly have some km’s in the legs to help them along.  also with us we had mike t, juni and mark h.  the smaller numbers made the regroups quicker so we were soon on our way to the next climb up canns rd.

the pace wasn’t on initially and we rode as a group for a while.  i probably instigated this as i knew that i don’t have the km’s in the legs lately, and was looking for a reprieve.  as the climb got a bit steeper, dean shot off the front with daniel on his wheel.  we all upped the pace a bit but were not really gaining back much of the gap they made.  mike b took off in pursuit and we pretty much had to let him go.  he bridged across easily and set the pace at the front.  this shed daniel off the back and he was dangling in no-man’s land.  the pace had increased enough now to split our group apart and i tried to ride tempo to get as close as possible to the leaders.  i managed to catch daniel about halfway up the climb and thought that he stayed on my wheel.  after a while i looked back to see him probably the same distance back that i was from the leaders.  he came closer a few times, but i managed to hold him off while mike rode away from dean.  daniel was looking back at the end to make sure that a fast finishing rob, didn’t pounce on him before the line.

canns – mike b, dean, pete, daniel, rob

as the road was a little damp out here, i warned the others about the decent down soldiers rd.  i didn’t really want to be scraping anyone off the road at this stage, so most people took it tentatively for the first part.  knowing the route has many advantages, so i wound it up a bit and past everyone before the smooth section of the road.  i wasn’t going crazy, but was taking the corners at a fair pace, just making sure i didn’t lean too much on the wet patches.  at one of the tighter sections, my eye strayed to the side of the road where there was a soaking kangaroo standing in someone’s driveway.  hard on the anchors to wash some speed off just in case he jumped my way and a bit of noise to try to keep him off the road did the trick.  however, the always seem to be in pairs so just around the corner, his mate jumps out in front of me and decides that it would cross the road.  throwing out a few more anchors and a bit of swerving meant that i didn’t find myself wearing a roo skin jacket today.  however, he did try to jump up a pretty steep slope, so i thought that he may play some havoc with the riders behind me.

with my speed all gone and the hill mostly behind us, i cruised along the flattish section with rob, until the call came from the back that dean had gotten a flat tyre.  we turned back around to offer no assistance and just watch him change it.  conversation turned to the tour of flanders tonight and how steep and cobbled some of the climbs were.  strangely enough we had parked right next to someone’s driveway that would have easily have been over 20% and was rough enough to be classed as cobbles.  no-one wanted to attempt to climb up it.

over to the next climb and suddenly we were heading up peet road.  we were not going to the top and would turn onto urch rd to give us a slight reprieve.  i was starting to run short on legs on this one so was sitting a fair way back at 6th wheel.  there were three behind me but a fair way back so i just rode the majority by myself.  didn’t see any of the shenanigans at the front my again mike came up trumps.

urch – mike b, dean, rob, daniel, phil

we transitioned across to canning road and onto pickering brook.  a slight mechanical for phil who dropped his chain on the inside meant we stopped to make sure he was ok.  once we hit pickering brook, the consensus was to skip the observatory climb and just do the final one up weir rd.  my legs were pretty shot by now so it was going to be a slow one for me.  i started near the front and watched as everyone flew past until i was last on the road.  by about halfway i picked up juni, and drafted him to the top. about 10 1/2 minutes for my effort so almost 3 min slower than my best.

weir – mike b, dean, phil, mark h, daniel

everyone stayed for coffee even mike b as he said that it was his birthday today.  i had to check the club membership list to see just how old he was.  it is older than me, but he is not the oldest rider in the club.

all fed and watered we were off home.  the decent was hampered by the wind and it was a low 70’s kind of day.  we were in survival mode all the way home but the group stayed together until the end.  all up a pretty good ride and the minor inconvenience of a light shower early on did not dampen the spirits for the whole ride.

ride routes 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th april

so, easter is here already.  it kind of crept up on me this year as i thought it was at the end of april.  turns out that anzac day is at the end of the monthso we get another short week a bit later.  we had a successful ride last week with phil anderson.  well some of us did.  a bit of bad bike maintenance on my behalf had me stranded out at the base of the hills.  i had to call up the family to come and pick me up and now need $300 in parts to repair the damage.  it sometimes pays to get a professional like yas to service your bike for you.

after the ride this saturday there will be another kit distribution at the coffeeshop for those that missed out last week.  there is also an option for you to collect from my place or alternatively in the city during the week as i work in the central park building.  if you need to organisea pickup time, then send me an email.

we still have quite a few of the smaller 650ml drink bottles left as well.  they are $10 each and i will bring a few of them to the coffeeshop as well if anybody wants to buy some.

much like the helmet deal, i have been trying to finda standard set of sunglasses for the group.  i have not managed to secure a deal with any distributor andactually had a not very nice email exchange with one bloke where he accused me of threatening him.  he saw my request for a price match withthe internet as a threat that if he doesn’t supply glasses, then we would buy off the net.  that was not the intent, but the opportunity for his brand to be spread across our group was lost on him as he was more worried about losing dollars.  most distributors were similar to this so i have sourced a good pair of glasses at a good price.  just so i don’t piss off any more shops or distributors, if you are after a new pair of glasses, then drop me an email and i will give you the details.  you don’t need to be a member to get these, but we will treat them as the spr standard.

there are a few races/events coming up in april.  cyclo-sportif, mountain bike and road racing.  keep an eye out on the blog for more info on these events.  they should be well supported by spr people, so if you want to get into any of these, then you won’t be on your own.

there has been some talk about adding an intermediate group ride to the thursday morning session as the advanced may be too fast and the transitional too slow.  there has also been some issues with the tuesday morning ride being too fast some weeks as the advanced riders set the pace.  what i am proposing is that on both tuesday and thursday morning we have all three groups start under the narrows and you can decide which group you want to ride with.  the advanced starts first then a minute or two later the intermediate and then the transitional.  the route would be the same for each group on tuesday (mosman park hill) and thursday (cott & freo) so if you dropped off the back, you could be swept up by the next group.  these would be self managed groups but all abiding by a set of guidelines that determined how fast etc that each group should go.  any feedback would be appreciated.

there has been quite a bit of chatter on the comments section after the ride write ups.  there have been issues with the intermediate group being too big and now the transitional group is getting both too big and too fast for some.  the aim of the transitional group is to teach people how to ride properly in a group situation.  once people can do this and have increased fitness, then they should move up to the next group rather than try to drag the whole group along with them.  the gap between the transitional group and the intermediate group as been quite large and as such i think that some people have been reluctant in taking that step.  starting this week, we will have a 5th group ride leaving the carpark.  this group will follow the same course as the intermediates, but start a few minutes later to keep them separated.  this group will be made up of those that are struggling to keep up with the intermediate group and those that are now too fast for the transitional group.  the aim will be to start the first intermediate group (usually the faster regulars and some advanced guys looking for and easier ride) to head off first.  we then set off all the other groups and then send the second intermediate group off last.  if by chance they do catch the first group at a set of lights etc, then they should stay separate and allow the first group to get away.  we will see how we go, but i will need some people to step up and take control of that group for me.  let me know if you want to help out.

with so many groups now, i am wondering if we need some name changes.  i am tempted to go back to group 1, group 2 etc, unless i get some better ideas.  feedback to the comments section please.  at the very least i need a new name for the new transitional/intermediate group….transmediate???

the ride routes for this week also include the two public holidays rides on friday and monday.  as previously indicated, jonny will be looking after the friday ride, but hopefully, i should be there for monday.  as for the weekend, i have heard people asking if there were rides on over easter weekend.  generally the weekend rides will always be on except for if christmas day falls on a saturday or sunday.  even then i would expect that there may be a few people that still turn up.

as for this weekend, have a look at the routes below so you know where you are headed.  the transitional group on sunday will alternate each week with a hill one week and a flat ride the next.  this week there will be a slight deviation as they follow the other groups until the split at brookton hwy.

see you out on the road.
