30 Days of Biking

Saw this today…

The only rule for 30 Days of Biking is that you bike every day for 30 days—around the block, 20 miles to work, whatever suits you—then share your adventures online. We believe biking enriches life, builds community, and preserves the Earth. This is the second year, and third round, of 30 Days of Biking!

The Devil’s Corner

The UCI, in all the wisdom have approved the Kings Park course for the upcoming UCI World Tour race.  I doubt however, that they road over The Devil’s Corner!

Otherwise known as the corner of Mounts Bay Road and Spring Street, the Devil’s Corner has earned it’s name for two reasons.

Firstly, and this is no surprise to those whom have dragged themselves over it, the Devil’s Corner is the beginning of the Spring Street climb.  Arguably the toughest part of the course with an average gradient of 16% you may actually catch a glimpse of the Devil’s pitchfork on the ascent.

Secondly, the Devil’s veracious appetite for tyre is often satisfied on this corner.  The rough surface is strewn with potholes, drains and the occasional broken bottle ensure a puncture is awaiting all those who go into the Devil’s Corner without care and attention.

Remember, the greatest trick the Devil ever played was convincing man he didn’t exist – but he is waiting for you down there – corner with care.

Renae’s Race

SPR and RCCC are assisting SDCC in hosting Renae’s Race this year.  The reason is pretty simple – we had the course booked for our criterium series, but have decided that as Renae’s Race is a special race for the ladies we would let SDCC use the course.  In addition to this SDCC are a good club with lots of fine folk so we wanted to help out!

Unfortunately we have all been a bit distracted by the Smokefree Perth Crit series this week, so Renae’s Race has kind of snuck up us.  Luckily, as this is a three club venture our involvement is pretty minimal.

So what do we need?  A handful of corner marshals and a couple of people to do the refreshment desk.  SPR will basically be in charge of refreshments and providing our tents etc.  Thats all.

And of course we would love to see everyone head down to either spectate, support or ‘woman-up’ and race!  And yes – before you as there is racing on for the boys too!

Let us know in the comments below if you can help out 🙂

There is a women’s B-grade going so this may provide an opportunity for the ladies who have been dipping a toe into criterium racing to have a bash.

Nominations close tonight (I said we were running late right?), but noms will also be taken on the day for an extra $5.

The flyer below has all the details.

Monday Morning Madness

So following the recent blog about getting a Monday morning ride going a brave few souls headed out into the wind.

The intrepid five were myself, Doug, Jamie, Andrew Wongway and Ronnie.

For a brief moment when I arrived under the narrows and thought I was in for a solo – but one by one, and a little late the group arrived.

Here is the link for the ride.  We had a solid run – nothing to strenuous but definitely better than lying in bed on Monday Morning.

GARMIN

See you next week.

Hot Days in Struggletown (Saturday Fast Group)

In the absence of anyone else filing a ride report I reluctantly take up the challenge.  In comparison to the pain dished out on Saturday’s ride however, this really is a walk in the park.

We rolled out of the carpark as per usual, a few regulars where missing in action – either still recovering from TDU kms or scared off by the possibility of rain (looking at you Cawthorne!) – but still a reasonable group size. Probably about 15 or so up for the fast group.

Jonno led proceeding out of the carpark, but this was short lived as he didn’t know where he was going and set off down Mill Point Rd by himself.

We settled into a good pace along Canning Highway.  Things got a little heated when Jonno and Ash took their turn on the front.  I’m not sure why they what was going on. Maybe a bit a half wheeling contest.

Nick and I took the group up North Lake Rd.  We pushed it up the rolling hills which was pretty dumb as I put myself into struggle town.

Up the top of the hill we picked up Mark H.  He stayed with us for about 60 seconds before declaring he wasn’t up to it today and dropped back in search of Main 1.   Maybe the toe is still playing up…

By this point I was completely stuffed.  I was really happy when a couple of us caught an amber light and the group split.  Gave me a chance to recover on the downhill past Adventure World as we waited for the group.

Peter had programmed in way point markers into the route map for me for this ride – which came in really handy as we approached Berrigan Drive.  As we got to the turn I called out through my heavy breathing ‘left…left’ but nobody turned left except me.  So I went riding down Berrigan by myself.  Was a bit worried when the group didn’t follow.  But then they did and my technology was vindicated!  Sweet Garmin Goodness.

Anyway.  From here until Shepp Rd the story was the same.  The big guns rolled through up the front in all the fitness and glory, and I hung on for dear life with a select few at the rear.

On Shepparton Matty U told me he was leading me out as he needed the leadout practice.  I told him he wasn’t.  Too rooted.  I was actually going to drop off and roll home solo when we hit Albany Highway.  So instead of leading me out he attacked the group a few times.  This forced a split in the group some lights with Matty U, Jonno, Flying Finn and myself getting a gap.  The gap given to us by one set of lights was quickly taken away by the next set of lights, and come the Causeway we were all together again for the finale.

I’m not sure what happened in the closing stages.  Jonno went up the road, Finn chased and I held his wheel.  We caught Jonno 20 meters before the line and I dragged myself up over Finn for the win.  And the dry reach.

But man that was a hot and humid ride.  Totally disgusting.  I was dripping wet and ran out of water 10km before the end.  Hard.

Lennie found it hot too and took relief from an ice-bath at the Belltower.

Race 4 Champion System Criterium Roster

Hey guys Race 4 of the crit series is on this Sunday.  Racing will be fast and furious as riders will have their race legs on from the Australia Day crits and the battle for points will be heating up.

The roster we used last time worked well, with the exception of the relief marshall positions.  Unfortunately a few relief marshall’s didnt step up to the plate which resulted in a couple of marshalls doing the full day out on the corners.  Clearly we don’t want this to happen again – so please after your race or before your race see what you can do to help out.

If you have some free time on your hands on the day ask Pete where you can help out – he can help point you in the direction of a corner marshall that might need some relief.

WA Rowing Club’s annual Lord Mayor’s Cup regatta

The time has come again for members of Perth’s business community to compete head-to-head in
WA’s only rowing regatta in the central business district.

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the WA Rowing Club’s annual Lord Mayor’s Cup regatta.
The event is set to feature 32 four-man crews who will undertake a month-long crash course in the
art of rowing, then compete over a 500m course during a day of festivities on the Swan River
foreshore.

Ask your employer. Or, if you have your own company, consider entering a crew. Ask your mates. Ask your mum.

The entry fee for each crew includes four weeks of experienced coaching with a strong emphasis on
team-building and problem-solving, as well as competition on the day.

One of the reasons the Lord Mayor’s Cup has been successful for many years is that rowing is a sport
that can be taken up at any age and any fitness level. It is also low-impact so people who find other
activities difficult often excel.

Traditionally, the regatta has been a fun event with a good sense of humour and prizes for bestdressed
crews. We have a range of races for all levels of experience, awesome prizes and also cater
for those who wish to have a grudge match perhaps within a company.

Some of the feedback from the 2010 Lord Mayor’s Cup is as follows:
Excellent event, well organised and brought with enthusiasm!
All in all it was a fun experience!
We are so glad that we participated. The day was really fun and a great team-building
experience.

Registrations are due on February 11 but we have in the past sold-out before the due date.

Please send any enquiries to lmc@warowingclub.org.

Volunteer Roster for Saturday Crit

Here is the volunteer roster for this Saturday Crit.

Volunteer info packs will be going out to volunteers before the end of the week.

I have simplified the traffic marshall roster.  The idea being that we have the core people to cover the corners, and then people relieving them after their races etc.

Any questions, let us know.

Crit #3 this Sat Arvo – Memberships – Volunteers

The next exciting chapter of our crit series in on this Saturday afternoon.  The event has been a huge success so far with some spectacular racing and great atmosphere.  Not sure about you guys, but I put this squarely down to our club and RCCC being full of top people doing a superb job at running an event.  Like the guy in The Castle says – “it’s all about the vibe!’

Couple of things you need to know for this weekend.  Firstly, please note the race is Saturday afternoon!

Anticipated Start Times

D Grade: 3.00pm (20 minutes + 2 laps)

C Grade: 3.30pm (30 minutes + 2 laps)

B Grade: 4.10pm (40 minutes + 2 laps)

A Grade: 5.00pm (50 minutes + 2 laps)

The point leader jerseys have arrived too so we should be presenting these on the evening.

Secondly, for most of us this will be the first race of the 2011 year – do you have a current license?  All 2010 licenses have expired.  Get your butts into gear and renew your membership now!  Go to this page to do it: Memberships

Finally – and always the most important – we need to sort out our volunteer roster again.  Please nominate yourself in the comments section below if you are able to help out.  Thanks.
