Friday’s menu is Antipasto Platter -…[Read more]

SPR had great success at the recently completed Smashfest 2 crit series at Tech Park. There were lots of SPR members up on the podium and a couple of great wins! Congratulation to everyone who pinned on a number […]

  • Natalie,
It is open to riders of all abilities. If you are not super confident about crits, tonight is especially perfect as all of the “fast” boys and girls are off racing the Tour of Margaret River.
As we move on, we will cater for different experience levels should there be demand.
Come down and give it a go!

    • there are lots of driveways and parking lots that are not being used that late at night. the start/finish is as marked on the map above, so use that as the meeting point.

    • This could be fun.

    • I am not sure if you have considered this or not but where West Coast Masters race their crits in Kewdale / Belmont is also really good after hours. Lots of parking and quiet after working hours (not good for mornings thought).

    • Is this Thursday night crit training only for experienced riders? Will there be different levels or groups? Any ladies joining in on the training?

The summers most anticipated cycling event, Smashfest Crit Series, is on again at Tech Park in Bentley. It is jointly presented by SPR and Roues Chaudes CC.

    DSC_2511-001

There are 4 races on consecutive Sundays starting 16th of November. More information is here.

For the first time this year, there will be races for both individuals and teams in Mens A & B grade. The teams are 4 riders made up from a squad of up to 10 riders.

In addition, there is a big focus on Women’s riding with dedicated Women’s A/B & C/D races. It’s a great opportunity for the curious to try bike racing!

SPR has been kindly allocated a number of men’s teams and we need riders to fill them!

If you are interested in racing in the teams and are committed to riding at least 3 of the 4 races, put your name in a comment and your preferred grade (A or B only) or email race@southperthrouleurs.com.au .

If there are more than 4 “squad” members available to race, then the remaining riders will have, at this stage, priority entry into the individual race. We plan to rotate the squad members during the season.

Of course, you must be an SPR member, have a race license (or 3 day pass) and wear club kit!

Just to kick things off, I’m gonna nominate for A grade and get smashed! Who’s in with me?

    • I’m keen to give it a shot. I’ve not raced crits before although I’m interested in trying some club A grade, would it be bad to nominate for A grade straight out? I won’t be able to make the 23rd.

    • Luke replied 10 years ago

Thats a pretty steep learning curve Patrick.

If you’ve never raced a crit but have great fitness? …i’d go B, at least for the first race…worst case is you win and move to A afterwards!

    • Noticed that a and b men both race together in individuals, what’s the point.
As for teams, it reads to me that you can only have one team per race?

      • At this stage, SPR has been allocated 2 teams in B grade (if we fill them… still spots available). The problem is that any “reserves” on the 2 SPR squads who also want to ride will have to enter into the A/B individual race. SPR and RCCC acknowledge that the teams races are somewhat of a trial and it’s success will be reviewed at the end of the series.
        So Woj… are you in?

    • Probably 😉

    • That’s a sensible change to the course on to Mounts Bay Rd – less steep and more visibility. Last week there was four – would be good to see some more : )

Snap from Pete’s GoPro on lasts years B Grade Pinjarra Classic.

Its not quite Mt Ventoux, but the Pinjarra Classic is one of the few local races that involves some elevation. It starts with a flat warm up then straight into a climb up the road to Dwellingyup. The good news for the sprinters is there is plenty of time to work together with your team mates to bring back the skinny climbers on the way back to town.

The race is on NEXT SUNDAY 21st September and the flyer can be found here.

I’m sorry about the late notice with this post. So far this year, race entries have closed the Tuesday before the race. I don’t know why, but entries for the Pinjarra Classic close TONIGHT at midnight. It has caught me out. If there are any riders who want to race but miss tonight cut off, email me at race@southperthrouleurs.com.au by Tuesday, and I will try and contact PDCC on your behalf. No promises though!

    Entries can be found here

    • **UPDATE – 9 am Monday 15/9**
If you missed rego on Saturday evening (don’t worry, you’re not the only one), Westcycle have opened up the registration again and will close it off at midday today.

Have you got what it takes? The Collie Donnybrook Classic is on again Saturday week (16/8/14). It is always a fantastic event run by the Collie Cycle Club. It’s a handicap, which is a great format if you’re thinking about racing for the first time. The lower grades get a head start and try to stay in front of the A graders who race off scratch.  Work together with your group and even if you don’t win you might get some of “the chop”!

For the TOMR team members, this is considered a compulsory prep race. If you are unable to race, email race@southperthrouleurs.com.au your excuse!

Entries close Monday 11th August. You can enter via this link. To get inspired, check out the promo video. Anyone wanting to car pool, please leave a comment.

    • Any TOMR entries doing collie donnybrook???

      • I’m planning on it. All signed up, though Jon who has graciously offered me a lift isn’t 100% on whether he can make it.

    • Anybody else from SPR 4 TOMR coming down to Collie this weekend??
Does anyone have any advice/tips for a first time rider on the Collie-Donnybrook course? Cheers, Mark.

      • Hi Mark, contribute evenly with the group you are sent out with. If you have any folk in the group who are not pulling their weight, do not feel bad leaving them behind. Be conservative first 80 or so kms (don’t light all your matches trying to stay away).. If you are still away and feeling fresh with about 20kms to go, dig deep, hopefully you will get some strong people to work with and stay away with (and hopefully you can sprint faster than them ;-)..

    • Greg and I will be there Mark T. Andrew Williams is not coming – he didn’t give a reason – just mumbled something about being happy to be picked up by the sag wagon when he attempted the race. Don’t know about the other guys. I reckon save your legs as much as you can for the last 20K when it kicks up all the way back to Collie. Just try and hang on to any group you are with.

All hail… the race committee has spoken. Congratulations to the following riders who have been selected to represent SPR at the 2014 ToMR. Well done and good luck!

The teams have been selected based on club and race participation rather than pure “ability”. The riders are also subject to change within the teams as training progresses. Each team has a nominated “reserve” rider who will ride if another rider has to withdraw prior to the tour. Based on last year’s experience, there is a high likelihood of the reserve riders being called up. The race committee understands that some members may feel disappointed but please remember that demand again has exceeded supply.
