Thanks Peter, our next PDCC race is 9th August at Dog Hill so if he is there again, we will try a few of those things you suggested.

  • We raced in Wandi yesterday and had great race with Janice Graham taking the win in D grade. However, there was one guy in our group who would sit behind & between 2 wheels while the rest of us behind him were either in the wind or trailing single file behind his wheel. Is this a tactic, an indecisive or inconsiderate rider? He was told or given…[Read more]

Of course you are looking to improve your cycling skills, we all are! Perhaps you don’t know where to start or what to ask? Chances are your bike buddy will know exactly how to help you after just one group ride and genuinely want to help you.

This program caters to members wishing to improve in any fashion on the bike; technique, positioning or etiquette on group rides, it could open doors to racing or could even just help you understand why the hell do the things we do! Make the most of it!

The SPR Buddy Program launches this Saturday. The meeting point is at the top of the boat ramp (far right of the car park) before the usual Saturday group ride between 6:30-7am. Introductions will take place at this time, but there is no obligation to ride with your new buddy on Saturday.

I will put buddies in touch via email after the ‘buddy meet’ so you can arrange future rides.

The obligations for the mentors are to help their buddy on at least 3 rides over 3 months (ending 30 Sept). The mentees appreciate their buddy’s time with a coffee after the group ride. Easy as!

In true SPR fashion, we have had a fantastic response from mentors offering their time and knowledge. Thank you to all of you who have committed to and supported this initiative. So many fast/Main1 riders wanting to help out despite their training schedules!

Mentees please email me; leigh.outschoorn@y7mail.com to secure your bike buddy mentor.

Add your name, current riding group and any other information you feel relevant.

    • Leigh, Thanks for this great MENTORING initiative. It will be an absolutely invaluable catalyst to assist new and novice riders as they aspire to become more experienced. I would like to put my hand up to become a mentor, BUT my shoulder is too stiff and my back is still too sore to do so at present. A really weak excuse, I know! I’m out out of my Jewett brace in 2 weeks and working with spinal physio from next Tuesday over 2-3 months so hoping to get on a bike sooner rather than later before I forget which direction the wheels go around. Thanks again for your leadership.

    • Thanks for your kind words of support Brett. Stay beautiful! See you back on deck soon xx

  • Ok, I will just eat my words right about now. Severe weather warning has been issued and the Peel racing ‘come dip your toe into racing’ is now ‘please stay home and dip your toe on another day’. We are not going to attend this race. It’s been advised that we choose different weather conditions to try road racing. 🙂

  • Whoever came up with ‘afternoon racing’ is a saint! I love the ‘sleep in’ option! Not that I get to do that with a young family, but it does take the early morning pressed for time ritual of ‘peeling kids off you to leave the house’ pressure off.
Rain is a concern this weekend. Rain is included in race proceedings and it will be a matter of race…[Read more]

Gandhi“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” – Mahatma Gandhi

Nice one Gandhi! Deep! If you haven’t already signed up to become a mentor for this program, register today and find yourself helping others in your club!

If you are in training, there are always recovery weeks to allocate a ride with your buddy. It just takes 1 little ride per month x 3 that will make a x 10 difference to someone else.

See the previous SPR buddy post for more information.

The meeting point on Saturday 28th June is at the top of the boat ramp (far right hand side of the car park) in Coode street jetty car park at 6:30am. I will be sending an email to put buddies in touch so you can arrange future rides together. There is no expectation to ride with your buddy on meet day, it’s simply just to meet and possibly even catch up after the group ride. If you do ride with your new buddy, even better!

We love feedback and welcome any from your experiences while on this program.

If you wish to register for this program, please do so here; leigh.outschoorn@y7mail.com

    Add your name

    Mentee or Mentor

    Your current riding group

    Your preferred prospective buddy’s group

We will match according to gender where possible, but if you don’t mind then state that too.

Any other details you feel you want to add.

    my first racePickering Brook 2012

Before my first ever cycle race I used to think racing was about speed, tactics, intimidation and trash talk.

These days when I think of racing, I think of my first experience…it was an absolute shambles! My first race was at the Pickering Brook Series on a day with torrential winter rain. I missed the start and spent much of the ‘race’ chasing the group and swearing at myself. After a while I sat up and just laughed. I never did sample any of those other things that I thought racing was all about, although it makes me smile when I think about my introduction to racing because I shared that experience with a friend.

The Peel District Cycling Club has a great race series not too far from Perth. They are mixed gender and graded from A to E. The club is also very friendly and welcoming to anyone wanting to participate. There are a few of us going down to Baldivis this Saturday afternoon and again on the 12th July in Wandi to give it a try, so if you fancy dipping your toe in, come join us! I would love to see first timers making it to the start line (on time!) and enjoying the challenge as well as experiencing the thrill of racing in the company of friends.

If you are interested or have questions, email me; leigh.outschoorn@y7mail.com

We are riding in D grade which is 43kms. Registrations start at 1pm and racing at 2pm. The cost is $20 for registration plus a day race licence for $33 or 3 day race licence for $44. Cycling Australia are rolling out 6 month race licences from the 1st of July, so watch their website for those details and upgrade if you wish to race more often. I know you will!

Check the PDCC racing schedule to see which races suit you. http://pdcc.asn.au/racing/schedule/ Hope to see you there!

    • Oh I giggle remembering this story..

    • Oh I remember that story too!
If any new-ish ladies out there are even flirting with the idea of racing, or old hands who haven’t done the ‘racing thing’ yet, I would like to join Leigh in encouraging you all to give it a go!
The fun & stories you will have from the day are worth it alone. The sense of achievement you will have in just having the courage to get to the start line will be priceless – just try to get to the start line on time rather than taking photos of the momentous day 😉 hehe.

    • I agree PDCC do put on a great show. Their races are well organised and provide for some very friendly competition. Probably the best way for anyone contemplating make a racing debut.

You get to sleep in too 🙂

    • Whoever came up with ‘afternoon racing’ is a saint! I love the ‘sleep in’ option! Not that I get to do that with a young family, but it does take the early morning pressed for time ritual of ‘peeling kids off you to leave the house’ pressure off.
Rain is a concern this weekend. Rain is included in race proceedings and it will be a matter of race with care. What better way to improve and intensify your bike handling skills!
We are going no matter what the weather! Hope to see you there 🙂

Severe weather warning has been issued and the Peel racing ‘come dip your toe into racing’ is now ‘please stay home and dip your toe on another day’. We are not going to attend this race.
