well the long weekend was a looong weekend and i know that a lot of people managed to smash out some k’s. i managed a couple of long rides to prepare for delirium, and i found out a bit about myself. it turns out that after about 5 hours on the bike, my butt gets really really sore. my legs were ok as long as i kept feeding them, but my butt got sick of sitting on the saddle. i am wondering where i can get one of those sheep skin seat covers (probably the kiwi shop) or maybe a recumbent bike. in other (non-spr) rides, andrew ballam came down after he was rear ended on the pappa’s public holiday ride. hope to see him back out with us soon.
spr ladies ride – monday 8 april is the spr ladies ride. meet under the narrows (city side) for a 5:30am river loop – thursday route but with all the shortcuts. the group waits for everyone and even goes ahead if it is bucketing down with rain!
focus kids ride – this saturday is the first of the month and as such is the kids focus ride. bring your kids down and take them for an easy ride along the foreshore. i REALLY REALLY need someone to look after this ride for me as i need to do an extra lap of the river for training. can i please have a volunteer to look after the kids by adding to the comments below.
memberships – last week we had just cracked 340 members but this week we are back to 315. what happened??? well the recreational licences are set on a rolling 3 month year. there were a whole bunch of riders that had their licence expire at the end of march. have a look at your membership card and see if you are still a financial member. if not, get online and renew today.
ride routes – so i have started to convert the ride routes over to garmin maps and began by making up a couple of new rides for saturday. you will notice that they are named differently “route name, kms, spr day”. this is so when you transfer to your device, it shows the name of the route first. i will be upgrading as we go and will get rid of a few of the rides we don’t do any more. so, have a look at the new format and the new maps. i will replace the links as i upgrade.

For the main group rides beware there are road works just after you cross Stock Rd on South st (loose gravel 3 days ago) also, as you go up the hill on South St next to McDonalds and again at South St x Murdoch Drive. It shouldn’t impede the ride.

Can some-one please clarify the SPR position (if one exists) on how the group(s) should turn left at Nicholson into Albany Hwy- ie to use or not use the Bus Lane – or is either option acceptable ?
A couple of the SPR ‘seniors’ have previously advised ignore the bus lane and go straight to the traffic lights and turn left. And this is what I do if I’m sitting on the front or leading a ride as I personally think its a safer way to get onto A/Hwy and has less chance of p_ss_ng off car drivers – plus its illegal to ride in the Bus Lane . . . . .

I’m keen to hear the club ruling on this intersection also.
i don’t think the club is going to make a decision on it either way. if you think that it is an offence to ride in that bus slip lane, then don’t do it. if you think that the risk of an offence is outweighed by the safety of having a lane free of traffic, then it is up to you.
some bus lanes are also bike lanes (south st) but i have not really noticed whether this one is marked as such. there are no real provisions for cyclist on any part of albany hwy, so we are pretty much on our own anyway.
i did download the road traffic code and had a look but also came upon this rule –
211. Riding bicycles
The rider of a bicycle shall —
(c) if the bicycle is equipped with a rider’s seat — ride the bicycle seated in or on that seat.
so basically, whenever you stand up during a ride, you are breaking the law unless your bike does not have a seat.
On the Friday early bird ride we use the bus lane on that corner every week. I don’t think I have done an SPR ride where we have not used the bus lane there.
Main 1. A couple of rules:
– “Tri-bars are permitted but are not to be used while the group is in formation with the exception of when the rider is at the front.”
– “Obey the road rules” I.e. Don’t blatantly run red lights at the intersection of Shepperton Rd & Teddington Rd in Vic Park.
Do people not know this or the group ride etiquette or are they too afraid to enforce it when they see people not sticking to it?
