ride routes 2nd – 8th december

with the start of the new year just around the corner (i know, we need to get past xmas first) have you set your goals for 2018.  there are some pretty good events out there that would require months of hard training, or maybe your goal is just to ride in a group up from where you are now.  whatever you are aiming at make sure you put a plan together.  that could involve a coach or it could just mean that you give the faster group a try every saturday regardless of when you get dropped.  for meegan, it was 160kms around lake taupo on her birthday, no less.  i think that deserves an extra piece of cake.

ride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for december is  Travis Meyer from Finance Detective.  Travis Meyer is an ex-professional cyclist having raced with some of the biggest teams in the world such as Orica-GreenEdge & Garmin Slipstream. He has turned his attention to his new venture, as a Mortgage & Finance Broker, working alongside the best in the business, Finance Detective.    please see the previous post for more details.

ride up front – being the first saturday of the month we will be running our women’s only groups in main 1 and 2.  the “ride up front” groups give women the opportunity to control the pace and feel of the ride with out any testosterone fueled interference. join one of the groups to sharpen your group riding skills.

christmas drinks – christmas drinks will be at the empire bar again this year on sunday 17th december, 6:00pm.  this is usually a great night to see the year off without wearing lycra.  please see the previous post for more details.

club survey – have your say on how the club should be run.  make sure that you spend a bit of time filling out the survey monkey for the club.  this sets the context for what the committee will work on next year.  where your money gets spend, what trips and events are organised, or even how the club should feel”.  your feedback is important to us…and your could win an ipad just for completing the survey.  check out the previous link for more info.

tomr race reports –lots of race reports have come in so far.  make yourself a cuppa and pull up a pew.  reports can be found for stage 1 mixedstage 1 women’s 1stage 2 men’s 2stage 3 men’s 1stage 3 men’s 3, stage 4 women’s 3 and stage 4 women’s 2 plus an overview from the team organisers.  this gives you a good insight into what it was like to race and what each different team experienced.  a great into if you are keen to join us next year.

taiwan kom – if you really want to set yourself a challenge for next year, check out andy’s event report from the taiwan kom challenge.  100km race with 80kms of constant climbing.  not for the fiant hearted as the last 10kms took him 1 & 1/2 hours.

2018 licences renewal – any race licence that you purchase now will be valid until the end of 2018.  recreational licences are a year from the date purchased, but race licences are for a calendar year.  if you are looking at changing clubs and wish to join spr, then now is the time to do it.  a club change before a renewal is free, so get it done now then when you renew you will be a member of spr.

group sizes and ride etiquette – a timely reminder from our training and development officer on just why we split the ride up into certain size groups.  why we need to keep separated on the road and what it means for your safety.  have a read of the previous post, because if you get pulled up for one of these issues don’t expect that “i didn’t know” to be a valid excuse.

thursday training ride – we implemented a new system of splitting the thursday group ride to keep the size manageable.    we think that we have come up with a good way of splitting the groups, but we need you to be honest about your own abilities.  have a look at the strava segment for the ride so you know where you sit.  there is nothing to stop you stepping up to challenge yourself, but this will at least provide a guide as to how much more challenging it will be.

saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning.  please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate.  this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts.  see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – it is going to be a hot weekend so make sure you are prepared.  the b’easterly winds are back for saturday, so hopefully we get a good tailwind home.  sunday hills ride will stay close to home to give shortcut and water stop options if needed.

this time of year represents that absolute best time to be riding.  not too hot but not cold either.  no need for vests and arm-warmers and no need for lights for the earlybird ride.  as you can see in the picture, the numbers are starting to pick up for the earlybird rides.  we do take up a lot of space on both the road and while waiting on the bike path.  please be respectful to other path and road users as not everyone appreciates what we do.  however, don’t let that stop you from getting out and enjoying some of the best riding weather we have…besides the wind today, that is.

ride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for november is Mount Hawthorn Family Practice.   a fully accredited and equipped, modern general practice whose friendly staff look forward to welcoming you. the experienced team of doctors and staff can assist you with your general health needs and offer a range of general practice services.  please see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – hang on, it’s december at the end of this weeks ride routes.  where the hell did that come from!!!  it is predicted to be a bit windy this weekend, so be careful when riding in a group.  watch out for overlapping wheels and make sure you are rolling the right way.

so we have two new honorary members of spr.  current world time trial champion, annemiek van vleuten and her best friend, kim slütter spend this years tour of margaret river embedded in our women’s 3 team.  they lived with, ate with and traveled with different members of the 7 teams that we had at the race and were more than accommodating for any advice, conversation or selfies that were requested.  this is the first time that we have had a pro in our team and i would say that it was the best experience i have had at any of the tours we have been on.  it did cost us, however.  we had to sell andrew and fiona williams and the club van into slavery, and they had to work hard for the tomr organisers.  the teams and volunteers that did head down, really appreciated the sacrifice that was made as it certainly added a new dimension to the weekend.  for my own tour, this was pretty much the worse tour i have done ever, and that includes the time i had to pull out after two stages with pneumonia.  being totally under-trained and in a competitive team meant that i cooked myself early on and suffered the rest of the weekend.  however, from a logistics and club perspective, i would say that this would be probably the best tour we have done.  the bbq on the final night was probably the best example of team community and comradeship that i have seen on a tour.  greg and jon did an amazing and very hard job leading into the event at which time bryan and the volunteers took over control.  i doubt that those riding would have had quite as good a time if it wasn’t for the volunteers running around getting ice, coke, setting up tents, moving cars and giving massages.  the club thanks you and i personally thank you for everything that you did to make the weekend a success.  there are loads of photos on facebook, but i am waiting for a few race reports to come through.

ride leader expressions of interest – we are currently looking for expressions of interest for our next batch of ride leaders.  you have seen the men and women in black and should have even had one of them lead one of your rides.  now it is your chance to give back to the club and be trained to be a ride leader.  remember, we will not put you in a situation where you are out of your depth.  if you are a main 2 rider, we would not make you be ride leader for main 1.  so don’t think that you need to be a super fast rider who does races every weekend.  we are primarily looking for people that can help out at the main 3/tranny/novice end of the spectrum.  this means that anyone that is currently riding in main 2/1/fast more than qualifies as far as fitness/riding skills are involved.  how you go about leading a group, we will train you in that.  if you are interested, please check out the previous blog post for more details.

entertainment books – we are still selling the entertainment book/app as a fund raiser for the club.  packed full of offers, it will not take you long to redeem back what you paid.  check out the previous post for more details and links to registration.

thursday training ride – we implemented a new system of splitting the thursday group ride to keep the size manageable.    we think that we have come up with a good way of splitting the groups, but we need you to be honest about your own abilities.  have a look at the strava segment for the ride so you know where you sit.  there is nothing to stop you stepping up to challenge yourself, but this will at least provide a guide as to how much more challenging it will be.

ride routes – there is a chance of a shower this saturday, but it is still meant to be close to 20deg by 9:00am.  so even if it does rain, it won’t be a freezing morning, but it may be slippery out there.  be aware and take care.

An abbreviated introduction for the ride routes this week because El Prez (along with a tonne of other SPR Riders) is firmly ensconced in a house in the South West, resting up for the Tour of Margaret River which kicks off in the morning. So, you know the deal: Important stuff up the top, ride routes at the end.

Enjoy!

spr tomr – as you may have read in the previous post, we have organised one of the biggest contingents of spr racers to attend this years tour of margs.  this has been a massive undertaking and would not be possible without the countless hours that our club has put into logistics.  in particular, jon and greg have gone above and beyond to make this happen.  on top of this we have had the extra pressure of having one of the top ranked women cyclists in the world, not only racing with one of our teams, but staying and playing with us as well.  good luck to all racing this weekend but also a get well to stu and louise who both had last minute crashes and have had to pull out of the race.

2018 licences renewal – now that we have started october, any race licence that you purchase will be valid until the end of 2018.  recreational licences are a year from the date purchased, but race licences are for a calendar year.  if you are looking at changing clubs and wish to join spr, then now is the time to do it.  a club change before a renewal is free, so get it done now then when you renew you will be a member of spr.  if you need a race licence for tour of margs, get it now and you can race all of next year.

so a bit of a win this last week when it was announced that the government will be bringing in the minimum passing distance.  apparently it was a bit of a backdoor approach  by modifying part of the road traffic code which bypassed having to put something before parliament.  all in all though, a good outcome for cyclists.  as has been pointed out numerous times, this will not actually stop cyclists from being hit by vehicles, especially those drivers that are just not paying attention.  however, if you just get knocked off, we have found that there is sometimes little recourse for the rider as the incident may fall between the cracks of dangerous or careless driving.  after nov 30, however, being struck by a vehicle would indicate that the driver had not given 1 m clearance…by default.  at least it is a starting point.  anecdotally, what i have seen and heard is that all this press about drivers actually having to take care, has aggrieved some drivers to the point that they are being dicks on the road.  this morning on the earlybird a driver did a drive-by with horn blazing as we turned off west coast hwy, for no other reason than he was a dick.  there were 2 lanes and he was the only other vehicle on the road, plus the lights ahead of him were red.  he was probably upset that these bikes “caused” the lights to change red on him and he had to wait.  focusing on an issue helps to highlight the inadequacies that we hope to remedy, but for others, it highlights something that they want to get pissed off about for no other reason than it effects their right to feel entitled to “own the road”.  just be extra careful out there.  even if you are doing everything correctly, we are still a target to some members of society.  whether you are in the right or not, doesn’t matter once you go over the bonnet.

ride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for november is Mount Hawthorn Family Practice.   a fully accredited and equipped, modern general practice whose friendly staff look forward to welcoming you. the experienced team of doctors and staff can assist you with your general health needs and offer a range of general practice services.  please see the previous post for more details.

SPR@ToMR – This coming week we have current World #1 and LaCourse champion Annemiek van Vleuten arriving in Perth to join the SPR ToMR Squad at this years ToMR event. Annemiek is racing, staying and dining with the squad over the weekend, so this really is a unique opportunity to spend time with a giant of our sport. Any SPR members coming to ToMR to support and cheer us on should email for details on where the squad is staying in Dunsborough if you’d like to catch up with us. Oh, and Annemiek, of course! Full event details are posted on the tour website and also on the ToMR FB page.

spr tomr practice –  this is the last saturday before margaret river so hopefully you have had lots of practice with your team mates.  one last official hit out this saturday and the teams will be tackling kings park.  a figure 8 in the park will test your ability to keep the group together on climbs.  communication is the key as this is not like a normal paceline.  basically the teams go down lovekin, up cardiac hill, down lovekin and up may drive.  cardiac is a shorter steeper hill, while may is a longer rise with steps in it.  it is important to also practice how the group stays together on the downhill.  again, communication is the key.

2018 licences renewal – now that we have started october, any race licence that you purchase will be valid until the end of 2018.  recreational licences are a year from the date purchased, but race licences are for a calendar year.  if you are looking at changing clubs and wish to join spr, then now is the time to do it.  a club change before a renewal is free, so get it done now then when you renew you will be a member of spr.  if you need a race licence for tour of margs, get it now and you can race all of next year.

its halloween and the witch doctor is coming for you

we don’t really celebrate halloween that much in australia as it is generally seen as an american tradition.  however, my kids love it.  they get to dress up in scary costumes and ask total strangers for lollies.  cyclist, in general, are often considered very conservative.  some of us might wear bright colours or fancy patterns but looking at the standard rapha jersey (all black with a stripe on the sleeve, $250 please) we like to conform.  there is one individual in the club that always breaks with tradition and this is always evident at any cyclo-cross race.  nigel will dress up at every event.  from a bumble bee to a witch doctor and everything in between.  however, some of us would like to forget the race in vic park where he paid homage to the 90’s triathlon scene and did the race in just a pair of speedos.

ride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for october is Mount Hawthorn Family Practice.   a fully accredited and equipped, modern general practice whose friendly staff look forward to welcoming you. the experienced team of doctors and staff can assist you with your general health needs and offer a range of general practice services.  please see the previous post for more details.

New kit
The new kit…

spr kit collection – if you ordered kit during the last run, it will be available to be picked up from the coffee shop after the ride this saturday.  it should be available between 9:00am and 10:15am.  if you can’t collect it then, contact kit@southperthrouleurs.com.au to organise another time, or purchase “kit shipping” from the shop.

spr tomr practice –  with only a few weeks to go before the tour of margs, the next three saturday’s will focus on the team time trial.  meet as usual for the main ride and then head out in your teams to practice riding as a group.  this week the teams will follow the same course as the main ride as it contains a number of large rolling hills similar to what stage one contains.  if the teams want to head out early to stay clear of the spr groups, then organise amongst yourself to set a start time.

2018 licences renewal – now that we have started october, any race licence that you purchase will be valid until the end of 2018.  recreational licences are a year from the date purchased, but race licences are for a calendar year.  if you are looking at changing clubs and wish to join spr, then now is the time to do it.  a club change before a renewal is free, so get it done now then when you renew you will be a member of spr.  if you need a race licence for tour of margs, get it now and you can race all of next year.

ride leader expressions of interest – we are currently looking for expressions of interest for our next batch of ride leaders.  you have seen the men and women in black and should have even had one of them lead one of your rides.  now it is your chance to give back to the club and be trained to be a ride leader.  remember, we will not put you in a situation where you are out of your depth.  if you are a main 2 rider, we would not make you be ride leader for main 1.  so don’t think that you need to be a super fast rider who does races every weekend.  we are primarily looking for people that can help out at the main 3/tranny/novice end of the spectrum.  this means that anyone that is currently riding in main 2/1/fast more than qualifies as far as fitness/riding skills are involved.  how you go about leading a group, we will train you in that.  if you are interested, please check out the previous blog post for more details.

entertainment books – we are still selling the entertainment book/app as a fund raiser for the club.  packed full of offers, it will not take you long to redeem back what you paid.  check out the previous post for more details and links to registration.

thursday training ride – we implemented a new system of splitting the thursday group ride to keep the size manageable.    we think that we have come up with a good way of splitting the groups, but we need you to be honest about your own abilities.  have a look at the strava segment for the ride so you know where you sit.  there is nothing to stop you stepping up to challenge yourself, but this will at least provide a guide as to how much more challenging it will be.

saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning.  please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate.  this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts.  see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – looks like we will have some strong westerly winds to contend with this weekend.  windy conditions are often the most dangerous as everyone is trying to find shelter as they are riding along.  please be extra careful with the positioning of your bike and make sure that you don’t overlap wheels too much.  an unexpected braking event further up the line can mean you end up taking a tumble.

october means one thing to people with freinds- family-business over east and that is, the start of day light savings.  that extra hour difference now means that the 9-5 working day is now a 9-2 if you want to catch someone still at work.  or alternatively you only have a few hours once you get home to call up family before they go to bed.  what it really means for cyclists in wa is that it is almost light for our 5:30am ride.  if we put the clocks back, you would basically be home from the earlybird before the sun is up.  now the hardest decision to make is which sunnies to take out.  the clear, but then squint into the sun for the last half of the ride, or the dark, and freeze your eyes for the first half of the ride until you can put them on.  a great reason to purchase an adaptive lens pair of glasses that can transition for you.  maybe that future christmas present idea…

spr tomr teams –  we are looking for a male rider to replace a withdrawl for the tomr.  level of racing doesn’t really matter as we can slot you in anywhere. please email race@southperthrouleurs.com.au if you are interested.

the beverley – the race, the heroic, the cyclo-cross and the town ride are all on this weekend.  thanks to a large number of volunteers from within the club, we are all set for this event.  but again thanks to all the hours of work people like greg murray have put into making this event fly.  weather is looking great, so here’s hoping that it all goes well for our second year of running this race. Full details for the weekend are on the website.

2018 licences renewal – now that we have started october, any race licence that you purchase will be valid until the end of 2018.  recreational licences are a year from the date purchased, but race licences are for a calendar year.  if you need a race licence for tour of margs, get it now and you can race all of next year.

it’s that time of year again.  just after you have gotten used to looking out for potholes, cars, pedestrians and stray dogs, you now have to look out for the dreaded magpie.  good ole collingwood forever.  well at least for spring anyway.  there is one near my place and he and i have “connected” on many an occasion.  not really a spiritual connection, more of a claw on helmet type connection.  a postie from canberra recently said that he “combats” the magpies on his route by feeding them muesli bars.  i wonder what a caffeinated gel would do.  probably not the best for a bird.  next thing you know he would be growing a man-bun, a beard and and ordering a soy, decaf, double-shot latte, topped up, extra hot.

the beverley – coming up on 14-15 october is spr’s hosted “the beverley road race”.  in only it’s second year and as part of The element series we are running this awesome event again in the charming wheatbelt town of beverley. the beverley road race is a 116km handicap format race departing beverley township through rolling green rural fields, into national park bush land for the turnaround and predominantly downhill run home for the finish. entries and event page are here.  as a part of the beverley heroic weekend, there is our road race on saturday, a retro bike show through the afternoon, cyclocross racing on saturday evening and the beverley heroic on sunday. there is pub accommodation, a caravan park and an event village in town for the weekend. it’s school holidays.  time to get the kids out on the bike.  back when i was a boy, we spend all day on the bike and were free to ride all around the neighborhood.  yes, the world has changed somewhat and we aren’t as trusting with our precious ones anymore.  however, this seems to be reflected in just how many kids are actually riding their bike nowadays.  i was a bit disappointed the other day at school assembly that in the group of grades 1-6 only a small handful rode to school.  i am assuming that they are the ones that live really close to the school too.  kids love the freedom and adventure that comes from riding a bike, so lets encourage that and make the effort this holidays to get them rolling.

just some of spr riders that made the trek across to lorne

so amy’s grand fondo was run and won last weekend.  the number of spr riders that headed east this year was staggering, we almost need to charter our own jet, next year.  from what i understand there were podiums for laurensia, fitton and stu gee, but there were lots of people that managed to grab a qualification spot to italy for next years world champs.  well done to everyone that completed the race as it is an achievement in itself.
