ride routes 15th – 21st october

20161008_065945what are you committed to???  last saturday was pretty horrible weather.  rainy rain and windy wind.  however, there were still a handful of crazy souls that turned up to the main ride at 7am.  so how committed are you???  there were also a bunch or riders that drove a couple of hours out to beverley to race in the same conditions.  so it looks like the groundhog has made an appearance and has declared that the extra 6 weeks of winter is over.  if the 32 deg october day is anything to go by, summer may be a scorcher.

square_blue-bk_orangeride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for october is Discover Cycling.  Founded and run by SPR member Leigh Outschoorn, Discover Cycling is a boutique cycle coaching provider who works with you to develop a personalised training program to achieve your cycling goals.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

letter-exceptions-6-october-2016-ride-up-and-disc-brakestechnical regulations – there have been a couple of changes to the wa technical regulations in relation to racing.  firstly, any juniors that renew their licences after the 1st october and move up an age group are then eligible to race in their new division.  this means that some junior riders will now be able to ride in the tomr.  secondly, there has been a technical exemption for the tomr to allow road bikes to use disc brakes.  there have been lots of new bikes released in the last couple of years that have disc brakes and the tomr is meant to encourage more people into racing.  as such, if your current bike has discs, you don’t need to find a different bike to ride.  click on the letter to see all the details.

hvcf-flyer_dennis_2016henk vogels foundation charity dinner – your chance to meet protour bmc rider, 2016 aussie olympian and former 1hr world record holder, rohan dennis.  the henk vogels foundation is holding a charity dinner on the 4th of november.  all proceeds from the dinner will go back into the sport of cycling. click on the flyer for more information and links to purchase tickets.

race licences – there are a couple of different types of licences that you can get when you become a member of spr.  a recreational licence and a racing licence.  recreational licences are for those that really only do the club training rides and want a bit of insurance coverage.  it covers a full year from the time you purchase it.  a race licence covers you for both training and racing and is necessary if you want to pin a number on.  race licences are only valid for the calendar year which means that they expire at the end of december.  however, the 2017 licences can be purchased from the 1st october and will then give you 15 months of coverage.  if you are looking at upgrading to do some racing next year, or need one to do the summer crit races, then now is the time to join or renew.

ride leader pilot program – as mentioned previously, we have kicked off the ride leader pilot program.  this is to ensure that we have a consistent message across all the groups.  this saturday will be the final practical session of the pilot program so we will hopefully have some brand new minted ride leaders over the coming weeks.  once the feedback from these sessions have been collated and actioned, we will then be looking for more people to be trained up as ride leaders. however, we will need some of our regulars to help out looking after groups.  don’t worry, it is just about keeping people together and you may find that you enjoy it and want to learn more.

20161008_140739the beverley – the beverley heroic is a concept that spr member toby hodgson has been running for a couple of years now.  back in the day, there was a race from beverley to perth across dirt roads and he wanted to revive as much of the history as he could.  the event has grown over a very short space of time with the beverley shire being a great supporter.  this year, spr ran it’s very first stand alone race as an extension to the beverley format.  the heroic is a participation event that certainly challenges the riders.  we however, expanded that to include into a handicap race over 110kms.  although, we do these things as a club, i would just like to personally thank greg murray for being the race director for this event.  he fully committed to it and ran with it all the way to the end.  there certainly were some hiccups along the way both before, during and after the event, but he dealt with them in an extremely professional manner and as far as most people saw, the event went off without a hitch.  there were lots of learning along the way, but we know better for next year, when hopefully, the weather will be a lot nicer.  check out the beverley race report.

tour of margs spr riders – this saturday, instead of the main ride, anyone that is on the list for the spr tomr teams is invited to our ttt training.  this includes people on the reserves list as there is still a chance that they may be called up.

2017 italy trip eoi – if anyone is interested in a cycling trip to italy next year please see the previous post for more information.  this will be a drop in, drop out format where you can join when you want and leave when you want.  some minor support is available, but it is really just aligning people’s cycling holiday’s together, so you can enjoy the experience together.

rac council voting – some of you may remember ronny low and his partner emma richardson as regular spr riders a few years back.  well emma’s dad is on the rac council and is up for re-election this year.  if you are a member of the RAC and have no idea of who to vote for, have a read of his introduction letter and lets start pushing for a perth where roads are not just for cars.

ride routes – the current forecast is saying that there is only a 5% chance of rain at 6am saturday morning.  quick, a relatively fine saturday to ride.  however, i have been told that there is lots of roadworks on ranford rd and the cancer ride along douglas.  therefore i have mapped a new course for this weekend.  it is a hybrid monday ebr and public holiday ride.  make sure that you have a good look at the route as it has a few right hand turns that the group will need to negotiate.

13662011_1222779024473270_3239584662580607848_oi have been meaning to talk about the government’s future transport plan for a while, but we have been so busy with all the races lately, that i haven’t had the chance.  one of their options is to build a bridge that links mosman, pt walter and dalkieth.  the idea is that it reduces the time to commute from freo to the city to 20min.  i am guessing that on strava, that will be down to around 12min for the KOM.  will it encourage more people to ride???  possibly. what it will do for us is give us a number of options for ride routes and shortcuts that never existed before.  get dropped on mosman hill…cut across the bridge and get ahead of the group at pt walter.  there are a number of vague promises and high level maps that join current cycle routes, but we will see what happens after next years state election.

778388p3442EDNmain24939The-Beverley-Race-2016-700_200-CSWA-bannerthe beverley – the beverley race is not a new thing.  it is the reincarnation of the original beverley to perth race that was held for many years (see article from 1904 – feedzones had sherry back then). the startlists are being finalised and hopefully we can post them up soon.

Womens Warm up Nannup 2016tour of margs spr riders – the spr teams for this years tour or margs have now been announced.  we are however, still looking at a few reserves as there is always some issues that take riders out close to the event.  if you are interested, please let the all powerful race committee know via email.  when changes do happen, we generally reshuffle the teams to make sure that they are as balanced as possible.  this is a great opportunity for anyone to be a part of a great team event.  ask anyone that has been involved in the race the past few years, and it has little to do with the results and more to do with the trip.

ride routes – after last weeks wash/wind out of the main ride, i have left the ride routes the same.  expecting to be less windy and more rainy this weekend, so cottesloe will not be quite as bad.  even though they are predicting a 26 degree day next week, we still need to make it through this weekend first.

14316983_10154493026758744_7280951368188384570_nthere is an article in the fairfax online paper that talks about a certain uk police approach to cycling safety.  it contained the following quote that i thought was very interesting.

“Cyclists don’t cause us, as an organisation, problems, that’s because they aren’t causing our communities problems, they aren’t killing nearly 100 people on our region’s roads as mechanically propelled vehicles currently do.  Statistical analysis shows they aren’t to blame, innocent in the majority of KSI [killed and seriously injured] collisions. The figures speak for themselves … drivers, don’t let your prejudices get in the way of the truth …”

it is encouraging to see that a police organisation is actually trying to get road users to understand the issue, rather than just blame the victims.  cyclist are the more vulnerable road users and it is easy to just say that “maybe you should ride there” or “if you get hit it is your own fault”.  well no. as much as the cyclist needs to take responsibility for riding on a busy road, the motorist needs to take responsibility for actually being in control of their vehicle.  not only concentrating on where they are going but also understanding the limits and limitations of their vehicle when overtaking others. i know that i am preaching to the converted, but regardless of actual legislation (come on colin, give us a law), it would be good to see this type of understanding spread to other road users.

778388p3442EDNmain24939The-Beverley-Race-2016-700_200-CSWA-bannerthe beverley – the beverley race is not a new thing.  it is the reincarnation of the original beverley to perth race that was held for many years (see article from 1904 – feedzones had sherry back then).  however, the modern race will be a basic out and back handicap race similar to the collie-donnybrook.  a handicap race gives the “slower” riders a head-start and the “faster” riders have to catch up.  therefore everyone is in the same race and everybody has the same chance of winning.  if you are looking for a pre-tomr hit out, then there are not many left, so check out previous post for more details and links to registration.  rego has been extended to tuesday next week, so no excuses.  if you are not racing, then the all powerful race committee is looking for volunteers to help resurrect this classic event.  there is a lot of history here and there is the potential to make this as popular as the collie race.  check out the previous post about volunteers as we appreciate all the help we can get. events don’t just happen by themselves, and we need the club to pitch in and help out.

ride routes – so it looks like winter is here to stay.  4 degree mornings and another wet weekend are on the cards.  however, this weekend there is also a prediction of +30km/hr winds.  this makes riding both interesting and potentially more dangerous.  be spatially aware of what is going on around you.  don’t cross wheels and make sure that you give everyone enough space.  your duty of care is not just to yourself, but also to those you are riding with.

pinjarra-classic-women-2016helmets.  sometimes they look good, and sometimes they….well match your kit.  whatever the visual aspect of helmets, the odds are if you have come off your bike, you know how much of a life saver they can be.  it isn’t just a speed issue either.  a few years ago, brendan came off his bike at a very slow speed and directly contacted the ground with his head.  he was in a coma for a couple of days which is a pretty scary situation for his family.  if he didn’t have a helmet on, then who knows.  there was recently some research around bike accidents and helmets and it has confirmed what we already knew.  a helmet reduces the risk of serious head injury in an accident.  there is always a lot of noise about responsible adults being forced to wear helmets and whether this stops people from riding their bikes.  to me it is the same as seat belts.  you can’t prove that seat belts or bike helmets make it less safe.  and anyway, those people that don’t ride because they don’t want to wear a helmet, probably don’t really want to ride anyway.  if you turn up to a club ride without a helmet, you will be asked to leave, even if it has happened by accident.  it does happen more in winter when people wear caps and stuff under their helmet.

melody-wheels_logo_FINALride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for september is Melody Wheels. a specialist wheel builder and repairer, they are located in the old freo prison.  let them help you in the selection, build and repair of your next set of wheels.  a number of our members have already utilised their services and others have attended their wheel workshops.

14249920_1132309916823564_6635310405450476847_oafter last weeks world champs, some of the riders decided to back it up and headed to victoria to have a crack at qualifying for next years world champs.  some really good results across the board and it was great to see some awesome photos filtering through the facebook feed.  it was great to see such a good club representation and it seems like the event may be a great opportunity for another club based trip….something to think about, race committee.

img_8043there are a lot of positive things that can be said about the grand fondo world championships that the club participated in last weekend.  lots of great performances on the bike, lots of people volunteering, lots of great club camaraderie, lots of positives all round.  however, i am going to be a bit negative at the moment.  the majority of the media was about the road closures.  even the positive media was about how the road closures were not that bad.  this was a world champion event.  not just a dockers vs eagles match, but a world level event and perth was more worried about the roads that were going to be closed.  i am hoping that tomorrow, the headlines in the paper focus more on the footy fans parking in the kids hospital carpark, then the actual outcome of the game. sorry, i know that it is not going to happen and a lot of cultural change is necessary for us to be seen as anything more than a annoyance on the road.

melody-wheels_logo_FINALride leader sponsor – the ride leader sponsor for september is Melody Wheels. a specialist wheel builder and repairer, they are located in the old freo prison.  let them help you in the selection, build and repair of your next set of wheels.  a number of our members have already utilised their services and others have attended their wheel workshops.

rules of engagement – please read the previous post if you come out on any of our rides.  it is up to all members to enforce these rules.

ride leader pilot program – as mentioned previously, we are kicking off the ride leader pilot program soon.  this is to ensure that we have a consistent message across all the groups. as such, some of our regular ride leaders may be taking part in the practical sessions that are being run in conjunction with the online theory.  we may be looking for a few regular riders to step up and help the club by looking after a group.

amy’s grand fondo – there are a lot of spr riders over in lorne this weekend to take on the next round of the uci grand fondo world series.  good luck to all riders and i am sure that you will do the club proud.

Pinjarra Classic Poster 2016pinjarra classic – a race for anyone that is a regular of the sunday hills ride.  this classic race is a staple of the wa cycling calendar and is always a great day out.  fully supported by the spr all powerful race committee, check out the previous post for more details.

778388p3442EDNmain24939The-Beverley-Race-2016-700_200-CSWA-bannerthe beverley – this is just a heads up for more information to come soon.  the beverley race returns in conjunction with the beverley heroic.  this race will be run by spr and will be a similar format to the collie-donnybrook.  more info and entries can be found here, but there will be a blog post to follow soon.

Womens Warm up Nannup 2016tour of margs spr riders – the spr teams for this years tour or margs have now been announced.  we are however, still looking at a few reserves as there is always some issues that take riders out close to the event.  if you are interested, please let the all powerful race committee know via email.  when changes do happen, we generally reshuffle the teams to make sure that they are as balanced as possible.  this is a great opportunity for anyone to be a part of a great team event.  ask anyone that has been involved in the race the past few years, and it has little to do with the results and more to do with the trip.

uwct volunteers – as previously mentioned, if you had an official volunteering role for the uwct, then please drop us an email outlining what job you performed.  for each volunteer, the club is set yo receive $50, so we would like to ensure that all volunteers are accounted for.

spr road race champs – if you have raced in any of the races listed, see how you are tracking in club points.  the leaderboard can be found in the menu above or here.

20160822_184531represent.  this weekend (including today) represents the culmination of a whole lot of training for a number of spr riders.  not only will they be representing spr, they will also be representing australia in the time trial and road race.  there are over 1000 riders taking part and some fields (50-54 age group) have 180 riders.  this will be a massive spectacle of old people in lycra.  there was a ceremony of sorts with the distribution of the coveted spr aussie kit to those that have qualified.  unfortunately for me, i was only there on official duties.  if you have time on sunday, make sure you cheer on the riders.

kalamunda
spr feedzone in kalamunda

uwct volunteers – the race organisers are still looking for volunteer marshals to assist on the day. cic events have offered to make a donation to the club of $50 for every volunteer.  if you are available to help out on the day, sign up here or contact the race organiser for more information. spr will also have a tent in the feedzone, so if you want to assist in handing out bottles to our riders, or you have someone that you are already looking after, then come along on sunday to kalamunda.  we are hoping to set up on railway road close to the anglican church.

spr road race champs – if you have raced in any of the races listed, see how you are tracking in club points.  the leaderboard can be found in the menu above or here.

Ride up Front CCladies day – it’s the first saturday of the month, so it will be ladies day.  women’s only rides for main 1, 2 & 3 will be available for those that want to have the opportunity to “ride up front”.

ride routes – its a dry weekend.  hooray.  for those doing the grand fondo, it looks like the weather will be a treat.  for those not, it looks like great weather for a long ride. sunday sees the running of the uwct grand fondo.  as such, mundaring weir rd will probably be closed.  if you are on the short hills ride, you will need to bring the group up lawnbrook to get back to kalamunda.  drop in at the feedzone and cheer on the riders.

uwct grand fondo final 2016

uwct training – we will continue to replace the normal long hills ride with the uwct course and will be a race pace ride for those that have qualified.  check out the previous post for more details.

uwct volunteers – to run a race as big as the uwct grand fondo final takes a lot of people covering a lot of ground.  currently they are looking for volunteers for the 4th september to work as road race marshals.  they are looking for people to help stand on corners, and it’s important that these people have some experience in cycling as they will be on the more challenging aspects of the course so being able to think like a cyclist will help. there are two areas of particular need:

  • zone 9 –  16 marshals (mundaring weir road)  – 4.75hr shift approx.
  • zone 14 – 13 marshals (leithdale rd – clayton rd) – 4.5hr shift approx.

2526for those that think that they know how to handle a bike, check out this picture from the olympic women’s keirin qualification heats.  what is important to note is that the outcome of this “interaction” was that the french rider in blue crashed, but the dutch women in orange made it back onto the track and stayed upright.  not only that, with a track bike, there are no brakes and you can’t stop pedalling.  unfortunately a bit of shoulder on shoulder action in our group rides can have a similar outcome.  not necessarily the olympic exposure, but a hard hit with the ground can leave you a lot worse for wear.  it is predicted to be a little wet this saturday, so make sure that you give yourself a little more space as your recovery skills may not be to olympic standard.
