ride routes 8th & 9th feb

cyclists – massive upper body and tiny legs.

riding in a group means a lot of things.  you can go faster, further, its social, and there is a feeling of safety compared to riding by yourself.  however, group riding also means that you are responsible for more than just your own safety and well being.  your actions can easily affect many people around you and it has a serious butterfly effect.  as discussed last week, a quick grab of the brakes at the front of the group can mean a crash at the back of the group.  when riding around the city especially, you have other responsibilities to the group.  we often ride on busy roads and have to share them with cars, trucks and buses.  it is up to every rider to look out for each other and let everyone know when there is a potentially dangerous situation.  it is equally important for the group to relay the call to the front or back so everyone understands what is going on.  you should all know the calls, signals and basics of the ride etiquette.  here is a reminder.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential. with the bonner uci laps now taking place, some of the regulars may be out training rather than on the main ride.  please do your bit to ensure that the rides all have adequate leadership.

bike skills course – check out the previous post about the bike skills course being held in feb.  also checkout the testimonials in the comments of that post for some great feedback.

renae’s race – in memory of renae baker, this race focuses on women’s racing with the men’s events being the support events.  spr and rccc will be running this event next sunday 16th at the tech park circuit. we will be putting out a call for volunteers soon, but if you want to race, you can find more info here.

ride routes – bonner uci laps will again take the fast group contenders out of the main ride.  please make sure that the main 1 ride is still a main 1 ride and not a fast hybrid.  also, show your support by putting your name down as ride leader.  remember, that with the changes to riverside drive, the rides that finish from the east can now continue along riverside drive to barracks st and enter the city that way.

ride routes 1st & 2nd feb

1010981_10152148803749561_1318557036_nthere was a blog post a little while ago that compared the fast group ride to the main group ride.  one of the main differences that was noted was that the fast group didn’t use brakes.  not, didn’t ever, but there really needed to be a good reason to brake.  the last few weeks i have been riding with some of the main groups and this difference really becomes evident.  it is not even sharp corners that are the concern.  it is heading through a roundabout (that we have right away at – i.e. shelley) or along applecross through the speedhumps.  a lot of this often comes down to confidence and that comes down to experience.  we are not expecting everyone to be able to ride like the fast group but just be aware that grabbing a handful of brake when the group is riding on a straight stretch of road is likely to cause issues further down the pack.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.  being the holidays, some of the regulars may be away, here is a chance for you to have a go at leading a group.  the club needs you even more to represent it in ensuring the ride etiquette is followed.

bike skills course – check out the previous post about the bike skills course being held in feb.  also checkout the testimonials in the comments of that post for some great feedback.

ride routes – saturday uci training has started again and you can check out the details on the link below.  last year this meant that there was no fast group as the majority of the fast riders were training for uci.  this year we will play it by ear but if there is no fast group, then the fast riders, need to be aware of their responsibilities when riding in the main groups.  if you are after more of a challenge, sign up to be ride leader instead.

lennie is stalking pro riders again.
lennie is stalking pro riders again.

australia day means a lot of different things to different people.  for cyclists it often means an extra day to ride where you can get in some big k’s.  just remember that there will also be a lot of other people out on the road and some may not be as tolerant or as sober as normal.  be careful out there and look out for each other.  to those from the club enjoying the tour down under, i hope aussie day celebrations get amped up when cadel wins the aussie tour on aussie day….

earlybird rides. part of the rouleurs culture.
earlybird rides. part of the rouleurs culture.

last weekend was the final race of the smashfest criterium series and it was good to see that all three grades of the women’s races were well represented.  during the week hall cycle training put on an open training sessions for women to come along and try.  there has been a bit of a resurgence in women’s cycling over the last couple of years and it is good to see that it continues to grow.  there are many women that ride, you see them all the time commuting or just riding around the river.  they have all the gear and ride lots during the week, so what is stopping them joining an organised club.  often large groups and training rides seem intimidating to the uninitiated.  however, you all know better after being in the club a while.  if you know of any women that ride but don’t feel confident to try it out in a group, invite them along to the saturday ride.  sometimes it just takes a bit of encouragement.  it took our own amanda nabi over a month and a number of back and forth emails before she had the confidence to come out with us.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.  being the holidays, some of the regulars may be away, here is a chance for you to have a go at leading a group.  the club needs you even more to represent it in ensuring the ride etiquette is followed.

memberships – on the 31st dec 2013 we hit a maximum of 430 club members.  the next day i checked and we had lost 184 down to 244.  as of today we are back to 300.   there are basically 2 types of memberships, recreational and racing.  the rec licences are on a rolling 3 monthly year and expire depending on which quarter you bought it in.  race licences, however, expire at the end of the calendar year.  don’t forget to renew your licence so you can belong to the club.  and you kind of need it if you want to race.  check your licence card for your expiry date.  more info on memberships can be found here.

bike skills course – check out the previous post about the bike skills course being held in feb.  also checkout the testimonials in the comments of that post for some great feedback.

ride routes – although it is going to be hot this weekend, the sunday rides have been scheduled in as usual for a 7am start.  as some people don’t always read the blog and the rides have always been at 7am it is easier to keep them starting at that time.  if you are after a longer sunday, then the earlybird ride gives you a good 50kms before the hills.  you then have the option to just do the short hills instead.  to account for the hot day, the ride route for sunday stays fairly close to kalamunda (which is usually 5 deg cooler than perth) so you can opt out at any time.  regardless of the time the ride starts, make sure that you are prepared with water and food.

adequate hydration

this saturday is going to be a hot 44 degrees with a strong easterly wind.  quite a polar difference to north america at the moment, but neither are ideal riding conditions.  as safety is a priority for our club, you need to make sure that you are prepared.  do you have adequate water??? do you know the way so you don’t get lost and have to ride extra distance???  is riding at a high pace in the heat going to put a strain on you (should you drop down a group)??? is this week a good idea to try your first saturday double???when the body is under stress, the mind is often not far behind and you can make some silly decisions that may affect the others you are riding with. make sure you look after yourself and keep an eye on the others you are riding with.  if someone doesn’t look too good, say something before they do something silly.

national road championships – the nationals are on this weekend and spr’s own jonathan bolton will be competing on sunday against australia’s best.  the event will be televised on sbs and we have organised a public viewing at the vic in subiaco, starting at 1pm.  more info on the facebook event page.

act. belong. commit.  a simple slogan that the wa gov use to try to get people to join clubs be it sporting or otherwise.  it seems a bit corny but i have had people come up to me and say that even though they rode with the club (act) and had become a member (commit), they didn’t really feel like they were part of the club until they got the uniform (belong).  it is, however, a two-way street.  being part of a club means that you also have a responsibility to that club.  as you are riding around in the kit, you are representing the club and your actions can be perceived as how the rest of the club behave.  and i am not just talking about negative behaviour.  i had a comment on facebook the other week about how one of our groups on saturday was noticed splitting at the lights (actually stopping) and how the front half of the group pulled over to wait.  unfortunately, this is not common behaviour in cycle groups but it was noticed by a member of another club that happened to be driving passed.  what side of cycling is your behaviour showing the public???

2013 Old Papas Boxing Day World Championships from tony lendrum on Vimeo.

the video above is the last few kms of the pappa’s world championship ride on boxing day.  now this is a big, often dangerous ride but also involves the cream of the crop of perth cycling (luke ellis does feature briefly).  what i want you to look at in this clip is just how close they are riding to each other and take a guess at what speed they are doing.  close quarters riding comes with confidence which can only come with experience.  learning the basics of group riding is important, so when you make it to this level, you can actually control your bike without freaking out.  listen to instructions given by the ride leaders and take on any advice given to you from others.  remember, there are always better riders out there than you and they may be able to give you some advice that helps you.  also, watch how luke durbridge (australian champion and protour rider) indicates twice to move around within the group, instead of just pushing in or changing direction.  if it is good enough for the pro’s it is good enough for our group rides.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.  being the holidays, some of the regulars may be away, here is a chance for you to have a go at leading a group.  the club needs you even more to represent it in ensuring the ride etiquette is followed.

ride routes – many people on holidays between christmas and new years so there are a few extra rides on the list.  all the standard ones remain depending on the day of the week, but friday has a couple of hills options as well.  new years day will test your resolve (do you really want to see in the new year, or ride the next morning instead), but we have a couple of rides planned.  uci will be dropped in favour of a standard river ride as it will keep the group together better.  dome is open so we will finish there for coffee after the public holiday ride.  stay safe on the roads.

one lap to go...
one lap to go…

inclusive.  what does that mean for our club???  we provide training rides for all levels, we provide race opportunists for all levels, we let pretty much anyone ride with our club.  but should it be much more than that???  we now have over 420 members in the club and with the greater size comes the inevitable groups within groups.  it is natural for little cliques to form as friendships are often forged through a common suffering (i.e. fast group).  it is important, however, to remember where we came from.  no-one here rolled out of bed one day and started their riding as an ‘a’ grade racer.  we all start from the bottom, wearing the wrong clothes (ask ryan about his first hills ride), forgetting to unclip at the lights, getting dropped way too early.  what makes this club strong is the acceptance of these things and the kind word of encouragement that may be needed to keep someone going.  a number of people have come up to me and have thanked me for giving them a push six months previously, and explained to me what a difference that has made to their mindset when it came to riding.  being an inclusive club is recognising that everyone is different, but we welcome them along regardless.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.  with the nice weather now arrived, expect more people to be joining us.  the club needs you even more to represent it in ensuring the ride etiquette is followed.

criterium race 02 – in conjunction with rccc we will be holding the secondof our 4 race series of criteriums at technology park.  both ‘a’ grade and ‘b’ grade have been pre sold, but there are still positions in ‘c’ & ‘d’ grade as well as women’s ‘a’, ‘b’ & ‘c’.  if you are not racing, or before and after your race, we will need a few volunteers to make the day run smoothly.  put your name down on the previous post if you can help out.  it would be greatly appreciated.

c grade ladies – last race we had to combine the ‘c’ grade ladies with the ‘b’ grade ladies.  it was a bit fast and not the best outcome for those that wanted their own race.  we need numbers to support the ‘c’ grade ladies category.  check out leigh’s post and put your name down to race.

tobitech training – intending to race in the uci masters race this march???  uwct packages now available.  see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – on sunday there will be no earlybird ride, but the main ride will leave at 6:00am.  this allows the groups to get out and back to help out with the criterium when they get back.  there are no rides scheduled on christmas day.  however, if you don’t have the “burden” of kids and need to burn off the festive cheer, then feel free to meet up and go for a ride.  if you want to organise something, add to the comments.  boxing day we will have both the usual thursday (fast/main/main3) ride at 5:30am under the narrows, plus the public holiday ride directly afterwards (split at the carpark into fast/main1,2/main 3,trans)

2013 - 1
looking after each other

why do we have a breakfast???  a few years ago when spr first started, there were not as many people in the club.  a breakfast consisted of 30-40 people turning up to my place and getting a coffee and some muffins.  back in those days the numbers were easy to manage and the club could fit in my lounge room.  the intent was that we would provide a more social setting to allow people to get to know each other better off the bike.  there were also raffle prizes and bike weigh-ins to provide some light entertainment.  what we were trying to develop was a culture that extended past just riding the bike.  what this means is that belonging to the club meant more than just riding against others, it meant that there were people that were also there for you.  this has been evident in the unfortunate event of an accident where the club has rallied together to support the fallen riders.  now the club is sitting at 415 members and with greater numbers also come different ideas and beliefs.  some of this has meant that we have now diluted the culture that the club was built on.  unfortunately this is just a part of growth, but we still want to hold fast to the corner stones that we started the club on – safe, organised, inclusive and social.  at the christmas breakfast this saturday, take the time to have a chat with some of the riders that you don’t usually hang out with.  these connections are what make the club strong.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.  with the nice weather now arrived, expect more people to be joining us.  the club needs you even more to represent it in ensuring the ride etiquette is followed.

spr drink bottles – will be available for collection on saturday after the ride.

spr kit order – will be available for collection on saturday after the ride.  if you would prefer to collect it from tech park at the crit on sunday, then email kit@southperthroulers.com.au.   next kit orders close on the 12th january.

spr christmas breakfast/awards – this year the christmas breakfast will be on the 14th dec at Dome.  we have a few awards that we want to give out to the club and need your help in deciding who gets these.  please help by filling in the survey on the previous post.

criterium race 01 – in conjunction with rccc we will be holding the first of our 4 race series of criteriums at technology park.  both ‘a’ grade and ‘b’ grade have been pre sold, but there are still positions in ‘c’ & ‘d’ grade as well as women’s ‘a’, ‘b’ & ‘c’.  if you are not racing, or before and after your race, we will need a few volunteers to make the day run smoothly.  put your name down on the previous post if you can help out.  it would be greatly appreciated.

first time racers – if you have never raced before and would like to have a go at the criterium this weekend, then the club would like to help you out by covering the entry fee of anyone that is a first time racer. a criterium is held on a short circuit (1km) so if you do get dropped, then you don’t have far to get home.  there will also be lots of spr people in attendance so you will be well supported.  more info can be found in the previous post.

christmas drinks – next tuesday 17th we will be holding an “out of lycra” get together as a christmas celebration.  it will be held at the empire bar in rivervale.  more info can be found on the previous post.  put your name in the comments so we know how many to cater for.

ride routes – it’s the breakfast ride on saturday, so there are no hills just in case people are too dressed up.  it is looking to be a hot one, so perhaps no full santa suit this year.  on sunday there will be no earlybird ride, but the main ride will leave at 6:00am.  this allows the groups to get out and back before the heat as well as being able to help out with the criterium when they get back.

when we talk about safety in the club, in a group ride, or by yourself, what do we actually mean by that, and why is it so important???  we are just out on the bike to enjoy ourselves right???  it is surprising that just how quickly things can change right in front of your eyes.  in lawson’s case it was a taxi turning right in front of him while he was doing 60km/hr.  the act of just riding the bike on a road is always going to be risky.  it is how we manage those risks that is important to the club and its long term growth.  a lot of the roads that we ride on are busy, and that is actually quite deliberate.  busier roads are more often double lane and when we are riding in a group, this gives drivers an opportunity to get around.  however, when someone gets dropped they may be on their own for a while until the next group come along.  sometimes just being aware of other riders around you and dropping back to give them a wheel may be all it takes.  we have been talking a lot about the ride leaders, but it is sometimes just the little things (the draft back to the group, or the friendly push) that make such a big impact to someone’s group ride.  the spr awards make an effort to recognise some of those people so click on the link below and nominate someone that has made your ride better/safer/enjoyable.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.  with the nice weather now arrived, expect more people to be joining us.  the club needs you even more to represent it in ensuring the ride etiquette is followed.

spr drink bottles – should be here for collection on saturday.  will let you know if there is a change of plan.

spr christmas breakfast/awards – this year the christmas breakfast will be on the 14th dec at Dome.  we have a few awards that we want to give out to the club and need your help in deciding who gets these.  please help by filling in the survey on the previous post.

night ride – would you like a nice relaxing evening ride???  check out the previous post and let us know when you would like it.

criterium series – as shown in the previous post, rccc & spr are putting on a 4 race criterium series in december and january.  as well as riders, we will need some volunteers to ensure that quality racing can continue to be run in perth.  there will be a blog post up soon calling for volunteers and letting people know what jobs we need filling.
