ride routes 17th – 23rd november

when we formed the club nearly ten years ago, there was a particular culture that we wanted to ensure was maintained as it grew.  as such, we eventually conceived the four cornerstones of the club; safe, organised, inclusive and social.  events like the tour of margs are a prime example of how that is meant to work.

  • although racing throws up a great big unknown, we try to behave as safely as possible.  but even off the bike, ensuring that people travelling to and from the event have the best route planned out and there are options for back-up drivers.
  • the amount of organisation that the team directors and  volunteers do, before, during and after the event is testament to how well we plan for these things.
  • we aim to be as inclusive as possible.  by providing 5 teams, we can hopefully get an even mix of skills in each team.  however, if that doesn’t always go to plan, keeping everyone involved and included should be the focus.  whether you come in first or come in last, it is still being part of a team.
  • last but not least, it should be social.  whether it is the end of tour bbq or the sharing of meals etc in the team houses.  this should be a social experience and it often is one of the highlights of the tour.

to really gain the most out of the club is a matter of being involved and not just being a spectator.  the club is more than just the kit, or the training rides.  the club is the people and it is what we do with those people that defines the club.

new kit day – if you ordered kit from the last run, it will be available for collection from the coffee shop after the main ride on saturday. if you need to make alternative arrangements for collection please email me at kit@southperthrouleurs.com.au and we can sort something out.

spr christmas drinks – our christmas drinks this year will be held on sunday 16th december at a currently undisclosed venue.  nothing really secretive about it, we just don’t have confirmation yet.  this is an “out of lycra” event that you can bring your partner to without them getting embarrassed because you are still in cycling gear.

christmas club ride – our end of year breakfast and awards will be held (as usual) on the last saturday before christmas.  this year it is pretty close as it will be on the 22nd december.  held at Dome after the main ride, there will be an end of year wrap up of stories and awards along with the usual buffet breakfast from Dome.

The cyclists thundering to destiny

save the date – on the 6th of april next year we will be celebrating our 10 years of being an affiliated club.  the group came together in 2008, but officially we became an incorporated, affiliated club in 2009.  help us celebrate this occasion.  hopefully many “founding members” will be in attendance to see how the club has evolved over the years.

tomr 2018 – the tour of margs (nannup) has been run and won for another year.  we look forward to the race reports from each of the team as we had 5 teams cover the 3 stages over 3 days.

entertainment books – we will again be selling entertainment books this year through the club.  the digital version means you don’t have to carry around a bulky book anymore. check out the links on the previous post to find out more.

saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning.  please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate.  this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts.  see the previous post for more details.

spr juniors – juniors is in full swing again.  bring your kids for laps of kings park.

secure your load

our posterboy from last week steve, was actually involved in the accident that occurred on the saturday ride.  here is what he had to say about it –

Further to the helmet debate, it was obviously lucky that my helmet was done up properly last Saturday when a few of us unfortunately came down along South Street. 5 riders fell and each had different injuries. Mine just happened to be impacting my head with the road breaking my helmet in three parts. It happened so quickly that there was no time to respond or manoeuvre safely out of the way. Without the helmet, I doubt I would be alive and able to write this. Even with the helmet (on securely) my speech and response times afterwards were slow. Now some may say that is just normal for me, but jokes aside, we cannot tell what will happen to any of us when we roll out each morning to ride. But will can take precautions and try and be as safe as we can. The latest generation of our kids growing up only know helmets, whereas my generation did not. It would be sad to change this as we have altered our kid’s behaviour in a positive way. You know what my vote is on the compulsory wearing of helmets is.

The next point is how good team SPR responded after the crash. The rider leaders and others took control of the scene and at a time where I could barely remember my name, looking back I am very thankful (as I know the other 4 riders were). I did in fact want to ride on but was correctly told that was not happening and in hindsight the correct decision (what was I thinking). Thanks to Greg, Dan, JP and Dean (plus many others I have not named and cannot remember as still a little fuzz on the whole incident) for the efforts on behalf of all the riders who fell. It is a credit to the club and the people running the club. That is truly what being part of a club is all about and the support behind one another. I hope to be back on the bike soon and in the meantime ride safe!

bike racks – you may have seen at the coffee shop last saturday morning the new prototype rack that has been made for the club. it is square section, so doesn’t rotate as much and the legs are a bit sturdier. we are looking for any feedback from anyone that used the rack so we know if there is anything we need to change before getting a whole lot more manufactured.  please take the time to have a look after this saturday’s ride.

tomr 2018 – good luck to all those racing down at the tomr this week.  we are especialy thankful for those that have given up their time to help support the teams.  without them, the race would be a lot harder (plus we would have to ride back to the start after 2 of the stages)

entertainment books – we will again be selling entertainment books this year through the club.  the digital version means you don’t have to carry around a bulky book anymore. check out the links on the previous post to find out more.

saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning.  please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate.  this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts.  see the previous post for more details.

spr juniors – although the mah boys will not be at the juniors ride this weekend, the carsons will be on hand to lead the ride on saturday.  we had a new rider last week that made 5 juniors now.  at the moment we are taking out the 10-15 yr olds, but soon we will be expanding this to some younger riders.  if you have kids and are interested in getting them riding, have a chat to one of the junior riders at the coffee shop.  remember, once you get a kid hooked on cycling, they won’t have enough money to spend on all the bad things.

from the ride coordinator – Good luck to all the SPR teams racing the ToMR this weekend, ride hard, and stay safe. Also thanks to all the volunteers and SPR Soigneurs for helping out to make it all happen. Looking forward to the updates and race reports.

so, someone started the helmet debate up again calling for the mandatory law to be scrapped when cyclists over 18 are not riding on the road. they are claiming that the number of people riding is not increasing and the number of people dying is not decreasing so cycling policy must change.  so basically any adult riding on a footpath or bike path would be able to choose whether they wear a helmet.  sounds fair enough, but is it really the solution?  is the fact that you have to wear a helmet really what stops people from riding a bike.  helmet laws were introduced in the 1990’s so most people have grown up with the laws in place.  when you are a kid and your only mode of transport (and independence) was a bike, wearing a helmet was not an impediment to your riding.  with the added media exposure that we now get via social media, i would say that the fear of the car vs bike war was probably more of a factor in people’s reluctance to ride.

the other side of the argument is that cyclist deaths are not decreasing.  the majority of cyclist deaths are due to being hit by a motor vehicle.  whether you are wearing a helmet or not, it probably doesn’t matter.  what does matter is that the majority of accidents that don’t involve a vehicle where at a lower speed a helmet most probably saved a life.  without helmets, i would expect that the number of fatalities would increase.  riding along a path does not mean that an accident is of less a risk.  the distance you fall is similar to that of a one-punch victim.  when your head makes contact with the ground, it is not going to care whether it is mandatory you wear a helmet or not.

separate to this discussion, if you turn up to a spr ride without a helmet, you will be asked to leave.  do your helmet up, steve.

tomr 2018 – this time next week most of the crew will be down in busso eagerly awaiting the first stage next friday.  it’s taper time, then race time, then beer and chocolate time.

entertainment books – we will again be selling entertainment books this year through the club.  the digital version means you don’t have to carry around a bulky book anymore. check out the links on the previous post to find out more.

spr juniors – over the last month we have had a 400% increase in our juniors.  that means we went from just one of my kids to both my kids and both the carson kids as well.  if you do have a +10ish year old that wants to come out with us (with you), then we leave the same time as the main group on saturday.  easy ride along the bike path to kings park, then a few circuits around the internal quiet roads.  yes there are hills, but that means there are descents too.

from the ride coordinator – saturday is looking warm.

the beverley – the aftermath.  i don’t think many people truly understand what goes into organising and running an event like the beverley.  if you raced the other week and thought that it was well run, please give greg some positive feedback when you see him next.  an event like beverley would not happen without the hours of effort and stress that he put into it.  check out his musings here.

from the ride coordinator – (adapted from something I wrote motorcycling around Scotland 4 yrs ago).
Cyclist prayer
To the gods of carbon, rubber and steel,
But most importantly of all, the god of two wheels.
We don’t need a church, of timber and stones,
All that we ask, is we break not our bones.
We’re not exclusive, if you’ve the will and the skills,
Our temple is a road, with bends, curves and hills.
We don’t ask the faithful to bow way down low,
Just get down in the drops, and go, go, go.

a lovely day for a ride – photo audrey xie

the element road series brought together a number of road race events across wa in a series spanning from may to now.  spr had a good showing across all grades and managed to take out the club leaderboard of points accumulated across the series.  unlike the kit that people may be wearing in the race, the club leaderboard accumulated points based on what wa cycle club you were a member of.  this meant that team riders also participated even if they weren’t in spr colours.  coming into the beverley race, we were trailing midland by a number of points.  a strong presence at that event meant that we jumped into first with a healthy margin.  not only that, but there were a number of notable top three overall finishes in a many categories.

  • 3rd C Men – Michael Morris
  • 1st B Women – Kirstie Moore
  • 2nd B Women – Rebecca Kelly
  • 1st B Men – Tomasz Wolczyk
  • 3rd B Men – William Celis
  • 2nd A Women – Corrie Filmore
  • 3rd A Men – Patrick Sacanni-Williams

well done to all those that raced throughout the season and to those that volunteered to help run the beverley race on the weekend.  a special thanks to greg murray who managed to pull it all together under very trying circumstances.

the beverleys 2018 – done and dusted for another year, the beverley handicap and the beverley heroic rides were staged last weekend. there are some stunning photos appearing on social media from the official event snapper daniela tomassi, but also from spr members. check out paul george’s collection on facebook. standby for race reports from inside the event organisation and from in the peloton. also hoping for a truly heroic write up from mr vesparazzi.

spr juniors – looking at a nice saturday morning weather-wise, so why not bring the kids out for a ride.  any parents with kids around 10+ that want to come along on our juniors ride are quite welcome.  an easy jaunt along the bike path and then loops in kings park before meeting the rest of the crew in the city for coffee.

from the ride coordinator – If you’re interested in the pro racing, the UCI have made some rule changes for next year. Some seem sensible, others may be just a bit of unnecessary meddling.

with the exception of patrick most people in our club that ride a bike would also drive a car.  as drivers i am sure that we have engaged in behaviours that would be considered “not on task”.  fiddling with the music, yelling at the kids, checking the phone, perving on a bike we are passing.  the majority of bike related fatalities are caused by distracted drivers.  not the groups that are holding drivers up, but drivers that just randomly run into the back of a single riders, because “i didn’t see them there”.  it is hard to see a rider when you are looking at something else.  i have said it a number times before that i don’t mind drivers complaining about cyclists, because at least they can see them to complain about.  this morning there was a spike in riders attending the earlybird ride.  maybe it is the gap in the spring showers or warmer mornings that suddenly brought every one out.  i was acutely aware of the presence that we had as the riders spilled over onto the road shoulder.  however, i did notice that any cars driving by slowed dramatically.  they noticed us.  as drivers that also ride, we must make sure that we are aware of our surroundings.  don’t be a distracted driver.  don’t be the average driver that is distracted for 45% of their journey as the results of a study show in this article.

ToMR 2018 – this event is coming up fast.  keep an eye on your emails for more information and ramp up your training.  this is always a good event and an awesome weekend away.

The Beverleys 2018 – the race and heroic and cx and town ride are all on this weekend.  the club has put a lot of work into getting the race to actually happen and there were a few moments when we thought that it would not.  good luck to those in each of the events and a big thank you to all the volunteers especially the race director greg murray who has put many, many hours into making the event happen. more details HERE.

spr juniors – we tripled our juniors at last saturday’s ride.  in such a short time we had a 300% increase in numbers going from 1 to 3.  hopefully the predicted rain will not appear or even better the predicted gap will stay around the 7am slot and we can get out and ride.  there was also a 300% increase in sausages, eggs and pancakes at the end.

from the ride coordinator –A wet and windy weekend ahead, good luck to all the riders at Beverley this weekend, racing and heroic rides.

vulnerable road users

i was reflecting the other day that it wasn’t even 3  months ago there was a massive debate and media focus on bikes riding single file.  there were groups trying to get signatures to petition the government to force people to ride single file on the roads.  mainstream media had hold of it and were interviewing people on both sides to throw more fuel on the debate as nothing creates a buzz like two sides fighting.  now, it is almost gone.  we hardly see anything on social media and mainstream dropped bikes for plastic bags in their fight for ratings.  i am sure that it will come up again as we rotate through the 6 month cycle of someone with a loud enough voice getting upset about something. however, as i have said a number of times, it is not worth getting involved or worse, dragged into a debate on socials.  why??? because it a stupid debate.  why is it stupid???  because laws are changed to protect a vulnerable party from being hurt not because one party feels like they are being inconvenienced.  the law has already been changed when they brought in the 1m rule.  and the reason is that it is not the actions of the cyclists that are getting them killed, it is the actions of the motorists.  yes, it may be frustrating to try to get around a group of riders, but the laws have been made to stop drivers hitting and potentially killing a rider, not to save a driver 30 sec as they wait for a safe place to overtake.  the reason i was reflecting on this was during the thursday ride as we were passing though east freo there was a car caught behind the group on preston point road.  a few years ago, when they resurfaced the road, they made it narrower, removed the shoulder and put in lots of traffic islands and traffic calming devices.  now there is a 2.5km stretch where cars cannot overtake a group at all.  even if we rode single file, there is not enough room for a car to negotiate between the riders and traffic islands without either breaking the law or potentially connecting with a rider.  at the time, we petitioned the local council, but were told that it was not a designated bike route so our concerns essentially didn’t matter.  even though that stretch of road is where the majority of cycling groups ride.  luckily for us on the group ride, we were close to the petra st roundabout, where that stretch of road falls under the control of a different council.  the roads are wider, with a shoulder and less traffic islands.  the car was easily able to overtake while the group continued riding 2 abreast.

Tech Park. Volunteers are what makes this business keep rolling. Be like Dinesy. Volunteer with the SPR Green Army.

“you couldn’t pay me enough to do that job”  welcome to the world of a volunteer run organisation.  none of us get paid for keeping spr running.  we all work for a living but it is the passion that keeps us doing the extra hours to keep the monster alive.  even the coffee card for the ride leaders is a token gesture as in reality they do it anyway because they believe in what we have built (evident in september with no ride leader sponsor).  so what if you don’t feel like you are experienced enough to be a ride leader, or don’t really want to be president???  the club has very few organised events where we really need volunteers to assist in the running of the day.  we will not be running any crits this year at tech park, so the main focus will be the beverley handicap race. we are still 7-8 volunteers away from having a full compliment. 3 drivers, 2 water station attendees and 2 more marshal/rego desk.  none of them are very arduous tasks and you will be given instructions on the day.  contributing to the wa racing calendar is an important aspect to our club and finding 20 volunteers from a pool of 400 members should not be a difficult task.  if you are racing, feel free to volunteer your significant other to help out.  we need you.

ride leader sponsor – there is no ride leader sponsor for september.  if you would like to promote your business through our website, please contact the club via email and we can send you details about what is involved.  thank-you to all the business’ that have supported the club over the past few years.

ToMR 2018 – The SPR ToMR squad returns to TTT sessions this Saturday. Check your emails for the latest. SPR kit order is closed, but we will need your cash for final payment soon!

The Beverley 2018 –Volunteers. Yep – what el Prez said. Beverley is a not-too-tiny organisational challenge to make happen. All of this up until the call out for vollies is a two man show. After the head start SPR gets from Mr Vesparazzi, council and Police approvals, traffic management, timing, course management…….. the whole days’ operations is down to the Club. ToMR Squad members have been quiet – you are expected to volunteer for one of the two days! Refer to the PREVIOUS POST and get your email responses in to race@SPR to register your interest

pointing is an important skill that is taught at ride leader training. pointing the wrong way can have disastrous effects.

from the ride coordinator – We recently had RUOK? Day, which is a reminder to check in with people in our lives who might be having a tough time. For many members our cycling buddies are close friends and ‘family’, and it is important to keep any eye on each other. A ride and a coffee is a good way to catch up with someone and see how they are doing.

the mo knows. photo by zac williams photography

does the mo know???  of course the mo knows.  what does the mo know???  well the mo knows when a photographer like zac williams is on course and knows where to position the bike for maximum exposure.  the mo knows that the secret to a great cycling shot is the pre-preening of one’s mustache before an attack.  the mo knows that putting the hard yards in now will put you in better stead for the upcoming beverley race that the club will be running in october.  and a good race will put you in better stead for the tour of margs in november. the mo also knows that riding a bike on the road can be a harrowing experience, but it doesn’t have to be.  a journalist recently decided to save money by biking to work and found out that it is not always nice to be on the receiving end.  it is unfortunate that more drivers haven’t spend time on the bike to understand what a rider can go through on a daily basis.  empathy and compassion are not a sign of weakness, but proof you are a human being.  read the full article here.

ride leader sponsor – there is no ride leader sponsor for september.  if you would like to promote your business through our website, please contact the club via email and we can send you details about what is involved.  thank-you to all the business’ that have supported the club over the past few years.

ToMR 2018 – The SPR ToMR squad has been recovering from last weeks’ TTT session, mainly due to chasing Elar’s wheel.
This week is the LAST CHANCE to order SPR kit before the ToMR event, so make sure you get your order in before Saturday 15th September!

The Beverley 2018 –The annual call out for volunteers has been announced for The Beverley. SPR runs the Saturday Handicap race, and then assists with volunteer manning for the Sunday Heroic Rides. This event depends on the SPR Community, and getting involved is a blast.
We are half way to our required volunteer manning for Saturday. ToMR Squad members – you are expected to volunteer for one of the two days!
Refer to the PREVIOUS POST and get your email responses in to race@SPR to register your interest

The kit…

spr kit order – the latest order for spr kit closes this weekend.  if you have signed up for the tomr you will need to purchase a club kit in order to compete.  make sure you get your orders in now as it will be the last one for the year.  check out the club kit page for instructions on how to order.

entertainment books – we will again be selling entertainment books this year through the club.  the digital version means you don’t have to carry around a bulky book anymore. check out the links on the previous post to find out more.

spr juniors – we have started our saturday juniors rides and we will be ridng again this week as long as the weather holds out.  this is for kids 10-15 yrs old and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  the route is listed below and involves laps in kings park.  it will be between 25-30kms by the time you get back to the carpark, so ensure your kids can cope with that.

from the ride coordinator – As we return to warmer sunnier mornings our numbers will start building back up to our summer peak numbers. Please remember our priority is always riding safely, sometimes that means a bit of patience, and putting the interests of the group ahead of your individual training needs. Communication is key, as is riding in a controlled and predictable way.
