PEMBERTON CLASSIC: 28 Feb & 1 March

With the spectacular SPR turn out at the Joondalup Classic I am keen for the same enthusiasm to carry forward into the New Year.

With this in mind I would

like to see how many of us are interested

to venture south on a SPR “Road Trip” to the wilds of Pemberton for the annual Pemberton Classic.

This cycle race is a regular event on the March long weekend.  The event program includes: Criterium “Race around the Town” on Saturday afternoon (Feb 28) and the Road Race on the Sunday (March 1).  The Road Race takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Pemberton’s farmland, vineyards and karri trees over a 40km circuit, with varying distances for different grades.

Make the most of the long weekend and explore the beautiful Pemberton area while you are down.

I am happy to coordinate and organise accommodation for anyone interested in going down (families are of course welcome) but as it is a long weekend, accommodation will be scarce if we leave it too late.  Please let me know if you are interested ASAP.

As yet the 2009 information link is not yet up but I will advise as soon as it is.

Don’t forget to get your racing licence for 2009 NOW!!!! You will get a whole year of racing value from it instead of forking out for day licences.

  1. I’m interested Lorraine, as long as it doesn’t clash with my racing commitments in Europe. I will check with my manager, who also happens to be my wife, and will confirm.

  2. We are interested to come as a family as long as the accommodation are family friendly. Remy will just be over a year old by then!

  3. I am in discussions with my Management group, things look promising although sacrifices may need to be made.

  4. Cyclosportif acts as a WACF club in itself (others in our group belong to Melville-Fremantle and South West Cycling clubs) so you can extend a Cyclosportif membership (remember Pickering Brook and alleged hand incidents) into a full blown WA Cycling Fed membership (with the advantage of direct entry into Cyclosportif events as well).

Pemberton is a good weekend with 2 races in 2 days. Davina did very well in both women’s events last year. There is even a hill in the Saturday night crits (similar to the Armadale State Champs course) and they have A,B and C grades.

The Sunday road races are a WA version of a typical classics style course (think Belgium in April, Jerry) with lots of rolling hills through the forest and a 1200 metre climb at the end of each lap. Thanks to this little beauty (and not riding on Saturday) I was able to finish second in the Support Race with lots of small groups spread all along the course. They may only have A and B grades for Seniors, but time will tell.

  5. if you haven’t already joined a club then maybe just hold off for a little bit.

since cyclo-sportif has decided to break away from wacf and get their insurance somewhere else, i am not that keen on supporting them with my $$$. i need to talk to a few people, but we still may form a club if there is not too much extra work for us to do.

i need to check whether a recreational licence (the old ride it licence) will be fine for you to be able to do a cyclo-sportif race. if it is then you are also covered when you do a spr training ride.

if it doesn’t go to plan, and you need a club to join, then i recommend the southern districts cycle club (sdcc).

  6. I too am interested in doing more races and cyclo-sportif events in 2009 so I will hold off for for now before getting a licence.
I am interested in Pemberton but I also must introduce an incentive payment (read bribe) to my management for this to come off.

  7. I don’t have management 🙁

But, to show my commitment to the cause, I’ve cut my overnight stay in Sydney on my way back from the US and will make a connecting flight back to Perth on Saturday afternoon to hopefuly be in Pemberton by nightfall. So count me in. I’ll let you know if I get some management by then 🙂
