so this week is the culmination of quite a lot of extra training from some of our members. the uci world cycling tour has given the older to elder bike riders something to aim for as far as events are concerned. the time trial will be held on rottnest on thursday and the road race around kings park on saturday.
the start lists have been published and the road race has been broken into three groups of combined age groups. basically, it is the “younger than 40”, “older than 40 but younger than 50” and the “older than 50” groups all starting 3 min apart beginning at 7:30am. It would be great to get a bit of support from those in spr that will not be racing that day, and i think it would be great if after the saturday ride, you got take-away coffees and came to watch. probably the best place to see the action would be on malcolm st hill between the end of st georges terrace and kings park rd. this will be the slowest part of the course and the bit that the riders will need the most support on.
the time trial on thursday has the following spr riders –

according to the bwa website, under faq, the feed zone will be at the top of the malcolm st hill. i was wondering if anyone would like to volunteer to hand out drink bottles to any spr riders on the day. we will need to organise this the day before, and the volunteers will need to get the drink bottles up to kings park. let me know if you can help. this is mainly for those doing the +100kms as generally a couple of bottle would suffice in the shorter events.
Good luck to everyone competing… I am working so will sadly miss all the excitement (and don’t want too see anyone visit me in Casualty)
Great to see SPR colours at a UCI event!!!
Ian Waite or Dr Wally is also having a go! I think he is over fifty also, well over actually.
M.Bonner we will need to see you Birth Certificate before the race if you still have it?
happy to hand out bottles – just need to get em to me. I will be doing the early bird ride then riding up to the feed station. Perhaps take a couple of spare bottles up in your jersey pockets and give em to me when you find me.
Have same plan as Toby.early bird then come along to the race.was gonna bring camera gear.let’s see how game I am to carry it on Saturday early bird. Am I really that mental?
Don’t think Nico is playing. Checked the list yesterday and it has him down as “withdrawn”.
Nice to see that the 7.30 group has the likes of Eddie Holland and Hank Vogels Jr in the pack. The Second group will have to deal with the likes of Fenton Moran.
Does anyone have the keys to the hurt locker, as I think I might need them after the event.
I am on marshall duties for both Rotto and Kings Park. I will be bringing my mountain bike with panniers, so can help with luggage/bottles carrying, but not during the actual race. Not sure where I will be at the TT, but I will be at Malcolm / Cliff St for the road race.
Those are some big fields given the nature of the corners at both ends of Mounts Bay Rd. At least it will be dry. Here’s hoping for an easterly breeze as well.
Fast and safe racing to all those SPR riders giving it a go.
Hi Mike, hope you have a strong ride on Saturday.
It looks like fairly strong N/NE winds for the race – unusual, but will mean a fast run down Thomas, and Mounts Bay somewhat protected by the Kings Park scarp. Good luck.

Good luck to all those racing on Saturday. Let’s get some SPR jersey’s to Belgium!
I’ll see you on the sidelines cheering you on..
@Jen, I think I can afford a couple of bucks in postage. Who do you want me to send them to…..:P
I’ll be happy to coordinate the Saturday rides to make everyone knows where they are going – planning to be out on earlybird too. I was going to head up to the race after the normal Saturday ride for about 30 mins before heading off as netball season starts on the weekend!
I’m sure you promised us a little piccie of you in your little pleated netball skirt, Julian – but it must have slipped your mind.
Definitely early bird ride, coffee and cheering for me Saturday morning.
I had the pleasure of a lap of Kings Park with Mike B and John this morning, both looking strong and sounding positive.
Good luck to all competing. It it such an amazing opportunity and well done for having the balls to put your name down to do it.
Can help out at the feed zone.
Lucky I was saved by 2 weddings this weekend and I did not have to have my age plastered all over the web..
I don’t need people knowing I am nearing the big 3 O 🙂
Good luck to all SPR folk out there.. It is an exciting event to be a part of.. Will be interesting to see how things pan out on the first few laps.. Those hills will be hectic, you can gaurantee the fight will be on to be near the front when nearing the end of Mounts Bay Road the first few laps..
Would love it if I could leave a backpack with someone. Riding to the event for a warm up, and don’t have anywhere to leave excess stuff.
Me too, I will need some help to keep a couple of bottles of drink handy at top of Malcolm St if possible.
@andrewwong and @jorgy, I’ll be doing the early ride on saturday and will head straight up to the starting area so I can grab your bottles et al if you want. Then I’ll head up to Malcolm St to yell abuse … um, encouraging things.
I’m guessing we’d get there from the earlybird around 7AM or so?
Jonny and I will be setting up the small SPR tent and have spare SPR bottles to hand out. Look for us at the top of Malcom Street near the feed zone.
@andrewwong and @jorgy, well scratch all that then. take your gear up to the tent at the top of Malcolm St. Probably easiest to drop it up there.
What’s one more time up the hill? 🙂
jordan, don’t count on the tent being there until after the race has started. best if you can meet them at the start and take their stuff up to the tent. i need to get all the stuff up there, then get down to the start line, so i am pretty sure i won’t be setting up a tent first.
ok. Shall do. At the start Andrew and Jeff!
We can setup the tent if it is there. We have had practice at the Critts 🙂
Good luck y’all. I’ll also be doing the early bird, then head over to the “tent” to cheer the team. Happy to hand out bidons top of Malcolm.
Thanks @jordanbrock for the offer. See you at the start line. @andrewwong, I will have a backpack so you can stuff your bottles in there for @jordanbrock to take up.
Some real nice messages from all the folks not racing tommorrow. I appriciate it and sure the others guys do. We will def appriciate those helping out with feed stations etc. SPR really is a great club and i am definatly glad i chose to be part of it. (even though it is far being the closest to me)! See you all on the start line
Thank you to all of you at various points throughout the course for the awesome cheering and encouragement given.. plus the chalk on the road was monumental on Malcolm St and Lovekin Drive. Sure helped alot more than I could have imagined.
For those brilliant riders who qualified for Belgium (eg. Mike Bonner) remember that “Heeft u hier vaak komen?” is a great ice breaker.
+1 for all the cheering, water bottle transfer, photography and moral support during the event. Loved the chalked pave at Spring St. The support certainly was appreciated, especially in the latter stages when the going got a bit tough. Super well done to Mike B for his great placing, founded on strong riding and astute positioning throughout the event. Beating Bill Gordin is no mean feat!
Just wish I could have held on a bit longer to the front few riders, but the final fast effort up Malcolm St was too much for me – was quite a painful ride in to the finish for the last lap – so happy to get there in 6th I think.
I have heard a few comments that the SPR presence was quite impressive.
At the early bird ride before the event, Toby said to me “I wonder when the West/Sunday Times article will come out with the inevitable drones of roads being blocked and motorists being inconvenienced?”.
Here ’tis!!!
“Cycling event blocks city streets”

And bloody well done all of you racing and cheering; can’t wait to hear all about the Herculean efforts and fun in the sun!
“But the plans were on display …”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard’.”
