ride routes 4th & 5th feb

the spot where carlos landed

there was a crash this morning during the fast group ride.  it had rained earlier and there was still a bit of water on the road.  going through the roundabout near uwa, carlos had his front wheel slip out from under him and he went down hard.  dr jim went straight over him and another guy speared off the road and into the treated pine logs on the side of the road.  all three managed to get riding again, but the rest of the morning was very tentative through the corners.  this is just a reminder to ride to conditions.  this means that if it is wet – slow down.  if it is busy – don’t swerve around to much, if there are kids/dogs/people on a bike path – don’t be riding at 40km/hr.  you are responsible for your own safety as well as that of others.  we think the road came off second best to carlos.

ironhorse clothing t-shirts – we still have some spr t-shirts left if you want to look part of the club.  especially if you are helping out at race events, these let everyone know who you belong to.  there is a link in the right menu and you can order online.

main 2 – we have a need to keep the main 2 group going as it provides a step for those progressing to main 1.  as such it needs a leader.  even though the extremely large shoes of russell will be hard to fill, this group really needs some direction.  i am looking for a couple of people that would be willing to lead this group on and off (i.e rotation) to keep it going.  if you are worried about not getting a strong work out, then you can easily change that by riding up and down the group, work on the front, helping slower riders get back on the group and even pushing people up hills.  unlike the corporate world, we have lots of indians and not many chiefs.  show some ambition and step up.

  1. Peter- I bought 2 x shirts both small (worn one and not the other- still have the tag on the other) they are too small can I/ do you have a medium to swap with the unworn one…???

    Thanks…

PS sorry to hear about the fall this morning- I believe its not the only one as reading FB there where others on different rides too… unlucky…

  2. Yes we had a similar spill in the Thursday Main group through the roundabout at the junction of Marine Parade and Grant Street in Cottesloe. It’s a deceptive one as it’s not really a tight chicane but does have quite a negative camber to it when southbound.

  3. I’ve heard a rumour that they are no longer referred to as “Crash Test Dummy’s” and have since been renamed “Carlos Test Dummy’s” 😛

  4. Yes….I have visited the dirt at that same location (near UWA) after having complete pedal failure (separated from crank)…and steering into the kerb!…..I remember those pine logs…not much else!

  5. my work colleague Stu M had his front wheel skip across a wet catseye yesterday morning as the were rounding a bend along same strip heading toward freo. cycle kit and helmet a write off, plenty of skin off, bike ok.

  6. Yup – I recall too riding straight over Mr Cawthorne at that very point in the ride as he collapsed in a heap under my front wheel. It was either over his legs/torso or his brand new wheels…he thanked me later….really….

  7. hey carlos, glad you’re sort of ok. can’t believe there was a spill in the other group, too. rain after big spell of dry weather is pure pants for cycling. but the “take that ashphalt” piccie is the first time I’ve chuckled in a couple of days – i suffered a violent “brendan attack” of suspected food poisoning weds night & am still feeling weak and very sorry for myself (but considerably lighter ;0) ). a cruisey main 2 ride sounds just the ticket.

      1. very funny stu-pot. no energy left to talk unfortunately but more than made up for it at Dome. We had a fab time of it thanks to Mark, Carlos and his little “sheep dog” Toby who did a brill job of keeping the group together ;0)
