save the date. sunday 23rd september 2012.
this will be our inaugural water tower challenge event open to any wa club member with at least a recreational licence. there will be two challenges offered a “metric century” and an “imperial century”. both courses will traverse perth and visit a number of water towers in the area. “why the water towers” you ask? well, they are usually on top of hills, so it makes it a bit more of a challenge. however, we are not going out to the hills, so the climbs aren’t much more that what we do on a saturday morning ride.
the format will be similar to the dams ride with teams of three sticking together for the entire ride. teams will be set off at intervals, but with traffic rules being followed, we are aware that some groups may catch others. it is in your best interest not to drag another group around and we want to avoid a big peloton as some of the roads will be safer as a small group going single file.
the course is not direct and must be followed exactly. to ensure that the route is followed, at least one member must have a gps device and a strava account. the team will download to strava after the event and the final “leaderboard” can be established. having a gps that shows the route will be a bonus as the route will not be marked, but we will issue some maps for those that do not.
bearing in mind that this is a challenge and not a race so there may be some social incentives as well. for example, a team photo at each tower may give you bonus time.
the routes are being finalised, but the imperial century (160kms) will take in suburbs from coolbellup to joondalup and across to the vines. the metric century (100kms) will also go as far south as coolbellup but only go as far north as alexander heights.
there will be a fee charged for the event and this will cover a couple of feed zones along the way. currently there is one at 60kms and one at about 110kms.
we will also need a number of volunteers for the day to cover things like setup, drink stops and sag wagon. add to the comments if you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions about the event.
Cool! Great work Pete, I’ve been waiting for this one, thought you may have given up on the idea, hope I can make it.
EOI for tower climbing buddies for the imperial
in
me 2
also keen
Oh hell yeah. Imperial Death March it is!
Imperial March…yes, in. Imperial Death March…we dont actually have to get off our bikes and scale the towers do we????
sounds like fun. imperialists unite!
In for the imperial
In for the imperial with you lot! Alistair aka Mr. Diesel could be our lead out man, Mathew aka Buttercup could be our navigator seeming he always seem to know where to go, Jordan you could lead us to water seeming your the holder of the horse avatar and Ali aka Miss Delirium can get us going all day. Looks like teams of three are going to be an issue…arrgh!
Nabi, happy to set up a “ladies” team if Pete doesnt need any help with running the event.
Ok….Team Triple A registered (Anna, Amanda and Ali)
Any other main 3 riders out there want to have a crack at the metric?
Keen 🙂
I am keen to matey! We’ll have to agree not to run into each other though!
Keen! Not sure what happened to my previous comment.
I’m in for the metric 100
yep…keen for metric
Keen for metric too!
Jason has a metric team registered (and I think you have 2 others already?) and I will also register a team
Jason C / Ros – as discussed I have now created a metric team “Jacks and Jill” (seemed appropriate although I dont want anyone to break their crown!). Password is as discussed. Any problems, give me a call on 0418 926 317. Jason/Clare and Craig are the other metric team I know of
Awesome 🙂 Will register soon…
Crap change the date I won’t be in the country awwwww 🙁
In
I’m there for the Imperial. Need a buddy with strava.
I’m interested in the imperial, but not silly fast, and with someone who knows where to go 🙂
I can’t promise to remember the route but I’m game for a good old-fashioned 100-miler if you are!
Yeah may be up to have a crack, not as fast these days though 🙂
Maybe my mate Rob Ramsden will join me with someone else as 3rd wheel 🙂 Rob you have Strava yes?
Charmed, I’m sure and flattered that you’d consider me for your threesome (eeeoww)…but I’m going to give up a spot on the inaugral ride for the opportunity to serve – x1 (+ Tin Lids) to volunteer Pete; SAG wagon duties + montage/demontage as req’d. Good luck Brendo!!
Imperial for me… just to get to the finish !
Im coming off some extended sickness but would be keen to trundle around the course as best as i can… keep me in mind
Imperial for me too.
Have an Edge800 to use for not getting lost. (Or to blame if lost.)
Bring on the imperial challenge. This will time in really well for my build up for the 250k around the bay ride in October.
im interested in the metric and if that seems to hard for me then ill defs volunteer my time 🙂
Why not, imperial for me 🙂
Make that 2, though I’ll need a leave pass for that w/e…
Nice, its easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission 🙂
Sounds great, I’m in for the metric with Steve & Marcel
Like to try the metric as part of my rehab!
Imperial sounds the go – with Mitchell and one other (maybe Jeremy O? if you are keen?)
so my knee is still injured and I wont be riding. Put me down to help out
I’ll be in for the metric. Have Garmin – will travel. Main 3 pace only.
In for Imperial
I’m in for the metric at Main 2 / Main 3 pace. Not going to be able to manage Main 1 pace
You in a team yet Shaw? Wayne and I want to do it but need a third at main2/3 pace.
In – for the imperial
You looking for team for Imperial?
I think we got 5 of us so far Kizzi, Mitchell, Jeremy O, Greg Roworth and me (Main 1 pace)….. looking for a 6th to make up 2 teams.
Hi Phil, If you are still looking for a team member let me know. I am keen to give the imperial a go.
Luke
Hi Luke, This afternoon Kizzi let me know her partner Tony might be in now too. But I will confirm tomorrow.
I am sure there will be a few team slooking for people and people looking for teams.
Cheers Phil
Looking for a team for the imperial – M2 pace?
super late i know, but i had ses training on sunday that has been moved to saturday so i can now give this a crack anyone still looking for a metric team mate? main 1 speed preferably, but happy with anything at this late notice!
Hi Leah,
I’ve yet to find a team for the 160km but at this stage if the commissaire accepts late entries I’ll happily do the 100km.
Andrew
Hi Leah.
I’ve come down with a nasty cough so will have to pull out of the event. My team is Green Caviar, and I was going to be doing the metric with Marcel and Ruth at Main 2 pace. You would be welcome to take my place. I know it would be a great help to Marcel and Ruth.
Hi Leah – my teammates have just recruited a replacement this morning so they are all set now.
Anyone still looking for a team to do the imperial? We’ve had a team member come down with man-flu so we need a last minute replacement.
Hi mark, I would like to join your team if you still need a replacement. I see that the registration page has closed, I’d be happy to pay the registration cost directly.
Sorry Justin, we’ve found a replacement.
Hmmmm……an 8 minute start over Team AAA.
Hope we don’t get “chicked”!!
I’ve just looked at the map and intend on getting a ‘cup of tea and biscuit’ stamp at each of my friends houses that we pass.
I just hit the “report user” button
I see the start times…..was there a time listed anywhere that we’re needed to be there prior to the start?
we will probably have a quick race briefing just before the first team takes off. it will be pretty much the same info that you were emailed. there is not much to do when you arrive besides put some stickers on your helmets and look at the maps.
Cheers.
(I didn’t get the email, or it must’ve gone to the junk mail and I missed it.)
i just sent it to the ones that the entry was registered against. yours went to a hotmail account.
Wow I’m gna have fum tomorrow, I’ve been full of the man flu these last few days :/ Lucky I have plenty of drugs!
I burnt my pinkie on the stove cooking dinner.
So looks like we’ve got some rock solid excuses if we get “chicked.”
Thanks to Peter and all the helpers. We had a fantastic ride. Great fun and back next year?? Even the weather gods were smiling at us.
Many thankx to the organisers and volunteers at the feed stations & elsewhere. Much appreciated & top job!
agree, thanks everyone. well organised, fun day out on the bike
What Andrew and David said.
Thanks so much to everyone who helped organise this and super effort Pete for all the hours you put in. Screen shooting all those maps must have been fun!!
Thanks to all the volunteers on course today and thank you to Toby for the after ride drinks at Dome.
Well done to all the riders and I hope your elbow heals fast Alison!
Agreed agreed agreed. Today would not have been possible without the organisers and volunteers. It really is greatly appreciated.
Another great SPR event. Thanks Peter and all the volunteers, it was most appreciated to see you all at each check in.
Should be an annual event.
What they all said. Great event, well organised, and thanks for all the time everyone put in.
Yes thanks to Pete and all the volunteers. What a great day and a fantastically organised event.
Fantastic day Pete. To you, volunteers and all involved in the background, my aching legs thank you!
Really enjoyed it, thanks to Pete and all the volunteers, looking fwd to next year, was nice doing some of the Santos ride in reverse.
Yep what they all said above! Thanks Pete and all volunteers! A really good challenge for us and a beautiful day too. Would be good to do annually 🙂
Great ride, thoroughly enjoyed it and as has been said above, thanks Pete and all the volunteers for flawless organisation and feed stops!
Btw 1060m elev gain on metric vs 1260m for imperial – the metric was definitely no soft option!
You convincing us or yourself Beno?!
Thanks to Pete for organizing such a great event & thanks to all the volunteers who made the day possible. I hope it will turn into an annual event. Thanks to Toby for the use of the Dome. The reception & food was great.
A brilliant day all round. Volunteers did a great job. Special thanks to Peter for printing the route instructions. Team Reservoir Dogs would have been lost without them – literally. Just goes to show you can’t always rely on technology!!
Great job allround, superbly organised. Hopefully an annual event.
Great event and great ride with Ruth and Garry.
thanks to everybody who superbly organised it.
See next year.
