uci training

557604_460602113995833_1844657523_nwith only 8 weeks till the uci race there has been a request to step up the training a bit.  there were big numbers at this morning’s kings park session and it is definitely a good hit out (or knock out depending on where you sit).  the need to actually ride the uci circuit at reabold hill is becoming more apparent as it is clearly a different circuit.  while the kings park circuit will certainly help in training, the actual circuit will help with tactics come race day.

so far we have been taking a group to do the uci circuit every second week at 7am on saturday.  this will still occur and so this week there is no 7am uci ride.  however, for those dedicated uci masters, there is now another uci training ride.  starting at the narrows at 6am and heading directly to the circuit to start cutting laps.  finishing at about 8:20am this give you time to get back to DOME for a coffee with the rest of the crew.  it is estimated that you should get in about 8 or 9 laps in that time.

on the odd weeks, the 7am group will meet up with the 6am group on the circuit to provide some fresh legs to keep the pace up.  both groups will then head back for coffee at DOME.

this updated schedule will be reflected on thursday evening when the next ride routes are posted.

saturday

6am narrows – advanced uci training

7am coode st – basic uci training every second week.

  1. Thanks, Pete (though you could choose a better image next time ~ ask Stu),

I just want to encourage the UCI regulars (and other riders who want a good roll-through workout) to be at the Narrows at 6:00 on Saturday. Even if you aren’t planning to race in 7 weeks time (maybe you’re doing the dams), you can still help yourself and those who are by being in the bunch.

The race distances on the big day are either 14, 12 or 10 laps – if you’re really old – hence the rationale for doing at least 8 laps (just over half distance for the Tour de Perth and under 50 races).

The pace has been pretty high during the first couple of sessions (see Luke Ellis’s no 1 ranking for the lap on Strava), mainly because we’ve only been doing 3 laps, and the whole thing has become a bit Wednesday-Kings Park like.

For this week and subsequent weeks, we’re hoping to keep a steadier pace for the first 5 – 6 laps (say 36-37ish average depending on conditions) so that there is a reasonable bunch working at a steady roll-through for most of it. We managed nicely with a group of around 8 contributing for 2 laps last Saturday; now we would like to extend this small bunch (practice) experience for a few more laps. Hopefully it’ll be a “train – don’t strain” ride.

Those that do feel the need can stretch their legs in the last couple of laps.

Those overly subscribed with ego-sterone or a desire to smash a group up as early as possible – perhaps there’s some other bunch ride for you.

    1. A couple of good 50+ riders from another bunch are keen to do some laps with a group. They’ll meet us at Perry Lakes around 20 past.

  2. Thanks Pete/Mike,
I’ll be there next week and looking forward to it!

Is there any chance we can get a group going for wed morning as well? To replace kings park.

    Cheers
    David

  3. Good session by all concerned this morning. We managed the best part of 5 inclusive laps, with guys keeping themselves under control on the slopes and a reasonable roll-through happening most of the time (we really had too many to roll effectively for the first couple).
Some got a bit dizzy after the first 4 or so circuits and needed a break. The rest of us ploughed on until we counted up to 8. The last 4 laps were covered uncomfortably under 48mins (with some stops at corners) – the last lap in 11m 54 despite cruising the length of Perry Lakes Drive tells a story.
Hope everybody got what they wanted out of the ride. Good luck to those critting or TTing tomorrow.
