uci race and support

well the uci race is only 4 sleeps away and i am still in a state of denial.  it will be alright, i am sure…  anyway, the registration has been extended till friday for the road race, but just looking at the startlist, i have counted just over 30 spr riders in the mix.  now, i just looked at familiar names, so there could be more spr riders than what i am posting below as i might have missed you.  there are 3 in the time trial, but that still leaves quite a few doing the road race.  we are well represented across all age groups, so you will be able to find a familiar face to ride with on the day.

as for the support, there have already been a few volunteers to take the tent to the top of the malcolm st hill (same as last year) and setup a spectator point there.  now this is not within the official feedzone so we will not be handing out drinks as we did last year.  you will need to get your drinks from the official site near the startline.  hopefully this means that they will be handing out water bottles again.  what we can do, is collect your drink bottle for you when you want to change.  i.e. throw your empty at the spr tent and you can collect it back afterwards.  put your name on it will certainly help at this point.

what we will be providing is cool drinks for the spectators and also for the racers after they have finished.  i think that malcom st will give the best vantage point and is probably the place where people will need the most support.  the rccc is also talking about setting up a tent here as they were told that it will cost $400 to set up at the event village.  at last years race there was great support with over 20 people cheering on wearing full spr kit.  hopefully we can have a good turn out again this year.

if you are racing and i have missed you off the list, add to the comments.  if you are supporting you can also add to the comments so the others know who to look out for.  race starts at 7:30am.

so it’s about time we had our agm and we are pretty much due for another breakfast.  we will be combining them together the week after easter after the saturday morning ride.  as usual all positions are open for nomination (pres, vice, sec, treas and 7 other members) so if you want to get involved with the club now is your chance.  nominations are to be made via the club email and specify if you are after a particular position.  with the club growing every year, we have quite a bit on especially if we are aiming to get some facilities built.  i will post more information closer to the date, but this is to give all members notice of the impending agm.

ride routes 17th & 18th march

flying visit to sydney for me this week which luckily co-incides with my taper week for the uci race.  our office was on the 47th floor overlooking the opera house, which was pretty cool.  i guess i am getting too used to perth as i found sydney just so damn busy.  looking at the traffic through the city and kind of thought that there was no way i could ride a bike here.  i think we get it pretty good in perth for accessibility for cyclists on the roads.  putting up with the odd (or daily) moron abusing us is a little price (although unnecessary) to pay.  there are probably things i have missed in this blog, as i am a bit jet-lagged.  hopefully i can fix it up before too many people read it.

track grand prix – vip seats available.  we only have a couple of people committing to it so far so it looks like it won’t happen.  if you are interested check out the info here and put your name in the comments.

uci race or support – so, who is actually doing the uci race next week???  i looked at the start list and there weren’t that many names i recognised.  entries close tuesday 20th so don’t be doing all this training for nothing.  also, who is going to be on the hill to support us this year???  i need some volunteers to take the tent and esky along and set it up the morning of the race.  last year i had to take it all along and race as well.  kind of a bit inconvenient and i will not be doing it this year.  it would be good to have the same level of support out on the course as we did last year.

ride routes – saturday, ewen st.  shut-up lennie i don’t want to hear it.

ride routes 10th & 11th march

busy, busy, busy.  short week at work means less time to do the same amount of work.  on top of that i am suffering on the bike so am not feeling the love at the moment.  a few big rides have put me in the hurt box and crap rides mean cranky days at work.  on top of that i am meeting with 4 city councillors this friday to discuss the possibility of developing the criterium circuit.  have a look at this facebook link to see what toowoomba council and the q’land state government have put together.  i would be more than happy with something half as good as that.

track grand prix – if anyone is interested in joining the VIP package to watch the track grand prix in a couple of weeks, have a look at the post here and leave your name in the comments.  unless we get about 10-15 people, it will not be worth it.

night ride – toby is looking at starting up a thursday night ride.  see here for more info and give some feedback in the comments section.

therapy focus – i have a meeting with some therapists and families with disabled kids that are interested in riding at 9:30am this saturday.  if you would like to join me in meeting with these people to see what we can offer them as a club, then join me after coffee to ride back over to coode st.  i would like to get a few people over there in spr kit to show a bit of club support.

ride routes – alexander drive this saturday.  it is a fairly new route, so make sure you have a look at the map beforehand as it gets a bit tricky.  sunday hills is hanging close to kalamunda and offering lots of opportunities for you to “blouse” it early.  however, as it is predicted to be 39 degrees, a blouse might be a good idea.

perth international track cycling grand prix – VIP package

a lot of you already know about and are probably going to the track grand prix that is on at the speeddome on the 24th march.  those that have been before can all attest to what a great night it is of racing across all levels.  this year the track world champs are on in melbourne in april, so many of the quality field that are heading over there will be using this event as a warm-up.

tickets to the gold section are $45 and can be booked via the link on there website here.

however, murray from track cycling wa, has asked if we would be interested in booking the “flight deck” for the night.  this is an indoor air conditioned lounge and balcony deck area which will give, without a doubt, the best view of the velodrome.

this package is a fully catered and provides –  food, beer, wine, soft drinks and waitress.

complete package – $135 per head – maximum of 30 people (but you don’t have to book out the entire thing)

if anyone is definitely interested, place your name in the comments as i think it will make a good night for the club and support track cycling wa which does a great job at putting on these events.  once we have some firm numbers (10-15 perhaps) i can get back to murray and see what we can do.

flyer attached here with more details.

sunday 4th march – long hills

only 4 at the start of the earlybird today but there was quite a bit going on.  as you can see from the first pic there was a police car sitting where we usually meet.  when i first saw the lights from the other side of the river i thought that maybe something had happened to one of our guys while they were waiting.  as i cross the bridge, i saw a white sheet sitting on the other side of the police car.  i thought it may have been our mate that has been sleeping under the bridge recently.  the guys were waiting on the other side of mounts bay road so we left from there.  apparently, a motorbike lost control and hit a light pole.  the female passenger was killed and the male driver injured.  http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/woman-dies-in-tragic-motorcycle-crash-20120304-1uap0.html

pretty warm out there today but i got a few good shots.  as i was coming down lesmurdie road my chain came off as i changed the to the big ring.  i didn’t panic but just pedalled it back on…like a pro.  unfortunately, this “pro” action meant that my chain got twisted and actually bent one of the links.  the last pic is of andrew saying “yep, it looks bent to me”.  20kms of the chain slipping every third pedal stroke kind of wears you down after a while.  especially after over 5 hrs in the saddle.

saturday 3rd march – main 1

some pics from today.  ali-jet said that she was careful not to get behind me and was sure that there were no photos off her.  i found some.  also, the girls were pretty fired up along guilford rd online slots and were going with all the moves….either that, or anna was just really excited to be outside maylands public library.

ride routes 3rd & 4th & 5th march

uci uci uci.  it is coming up fast and i am starting to try to cram before it like an exam i haven’t studied for.  i know that this method doesn’t work but it is all i have left.  i want to at least try to finish this year, even if it is somewhere off the back of the group.  i am in a new age group category this year, so i will be one of the youngest rather than one of the oldest.  not sure if it will help after watching the masters crit champs.  there are some strong boys out there.  another event i am thinking about is the delirium race that they have down south.  24hr road bike event with either individuals or teams of 6.  i am thinking of having a crack at the individual event.  would not like to even hazard a guess at how many kms i could do in 24hrs, but it would look good in strava.

pemberton/karri cup – good luck to all the spr riders heading down south this weekend.  both skinny and fat tyres have racing on.

women’s criterium – after the success of renae’s race, other clubs now trying to provide opportunities for women who want to race.  northern districts are holding a crit on the 11th march and they will now include a women’s only event as part of that race.  even better they are offering it at the low, low price of $5 entry.  it will be run at the same time as C grade but starting just after (like we did at the state champs).  if any girls want to give it a crack, then make sure you sign up.

children with disabilities – the following saturday after the ride, i am meeting with a group of parents and therapists to discuss what our club can do in regards to helping kids with disabilities.  these kids have all expressed interest in cycling and since we are down at coode st carpark every weekend, i thought it would be a good opportunity to see how we can integrate some other rides into our system.  ultimately, this should not mean any change to the way we do things but initially they may need some help in learning how to run group rides (probably just on the bike path along the foreshore).  what i need is a few people to join me in meeting this group so we can discuss the opportunities available.  9:30am coode st carpark saturday 10th march.

ride routes – a full weekend of riding available (if you are allowed out of the house).  on monday, it is not shown below, but if enough transitional group people get together, we can run a separate tranny group public holiday ride.  let me know on saturday if that is going to be the case and i can add it below.
