members benefits – update

we have a new members benefit that has just been added.  jordan brock has managed to get us a deal with strava for those that have garmin gps bike computers (ed – or iPhones, see below).  strava allows you to track your training and give you a leaderboard of personal bests for different segments that you identify.  the benefit is that you can also compare your times against other people that have strava.  this way you get a true representation of who is actually faster on a particular segment.

head over to the members benefits section and you will find a code that will give you a free 2 month subscription.  after that, we can then provide you with a special spr code to get a $20 discount on a yearly membership which brings it down to US$39.

ride routes 7th & 8th may

so the mornings feel more like winter, but the days seem to be warming up and we are looking at 28 again for sunday.  it makes it hard to work out what to wear in the early morning as you start to strip off as the day progresses.  but the end of last sunday’s hills ride i seemed to be carrying more clothes than i was wearing.

busso half – a couple of spr members are heading down for the half ironman this weekend.  dr ronny is taking the spr tent down for any spectators that are looking for some shade.  good luck to those competing.

tour de france – some of you would know ivan from the transitional/main 3 group.  he has had a friend withdraw from a trip to see the tour de france and is looking for anyone that is interested in sharing the experience with him.  see attached for more details.

entertainment book

as anyone that has lived in perth knows, every year an entertainment book comes out with “over $15,000 in valuable offers you can use all year “.  well ben’s school is using the entertainment book to raise money for air conditioners.  apparently the 60 days straight of over 30 degrees fried many a small brain.  the book cost $65 and has vouchers for restaurants, attractions, cinema etc, etc.

anyway, if you are interested and haven’t already been accosted by some other school or charity, drop kate an email and she can sort you out.

members benefits

so, why should you become a member of spr???

if you want to race then you need to get a race licence.  to get a race licence you need to join a club.

but what if you don’t want to race???  we offer recreational licences for $86 a year (this equates to $1.65 a week) and this will give you a bit of insurance coverage in case you have an accident as well as a bit of cash to us, to help run the club.

but besides insurance, what else is that membership card good for???

well, like last year, we are running another members benefits program.  this means that at certain businesses that we have listed below, you can get a discount of particular good or services just by showing your spr membership card.

these are generally not blatant percentage off type deals, but rather a good discount off particular items.

like last year we have discounts on helmets (tbe belmont), servicing (bike clinic), trainers (canning bridge cycles), shoes (glen parker cycles south) and  bike fitting (glen parker cycles south).  this year we also have japanese food (nishiki sushi), timber flooring (modernwood) and security systems (interscope).

if you do manage to take advantage of every single one of these deals then you can save up to $800 off the rrp of the good and service offered.  not bad for a $86 investment.

more information can be found here – https://southperthrouleurs.com.au/memberships/members-benefits/

also, just a reminder that race licences run for a calendar year, but recreational licences expire based on quarters depending on when you purchased it (e.g purchase may 2010, expire june 2011).  therefore some current members licences will expire soon and some people may have expired at the end of march.  best to check your card.

main 1 vs truck

some of you may have heard that on the uci saturday, the main 1 group was overtaken by a large truck on bushmead rd and was basically cut off when it pulled back in too soon.  well trucks have number plates and company logos on the side so one of our riders filed a police report with midland police. It is best to learn more about them and other truck services here.

In the wake of incidents like the one on UCI Saturday, ensuring the safety and reliability of trucks becomes imperative. Truck repair services play a crucial role in maintaining the fleet’s integrity, keeping them roadworthy and compliant with regulations.

For truck owners and fleet managers in Boise, Blue Wrench stands as a trusted partner in ensuring the reliability and longevity of their vehicles. Specializing in a wide range of services, from engine repairs to brake maintenance, this premier repair center offers comprehensive solutions tailored to the unique needs of each client. With a commitment to customer satisfaction and dedication to quality craftsmanship, Blue Wrench has earned its place as a go-to destination for truck repair services in the region. When it comes to keeping trucks on the road and operating at peak performance, it’s the name that drivers and operators rely on.

In the same vein, RUSH Diesel delivers top-notch repair services, specializing in diesel engines and tires to keep your vehicles in peak condition. Their expert technicians are dedicated to providing high-quality workmanship, always with the vehicle owner’s best interests at heart. From intricate diesel engine overhauls to routine tire inspections, they blend technical expertise with a strong commitment to customer satisfaction, ensuring your trucks operate smoothly and efficiently.

well the police contacted our rider and let him know that they have spoken with the state manger for the trucking company and the driver in question has been reprimanded.  he suggested that we need to be careful on these roads considering the increased traffic due to the industrialisation of the area.  he also said that while we can legally ride double file, we need to be careful and consider single file if conditions are not good. For truck related services, people can check out here and get downhole insight camera installed.

the amount of near misses and aggressive drivers that our group encounters seems to anecdotally be on the increase.  there however, is a mechanism that we can use to make these guys accountable.  a few months back the fast group had a bottle thrown at them on kalamunda road.  they chased the guys down and surrounded them as they were stuck at the lights.  yelling at them and bashing on the window is fine to let out some aggression, but no-one bothered to get the number plate.

this also goes both ways.

when we are riding around in groups and the majority of the kit is spr, then we are identified as spr riders.  when you are in this group and do stupid things, then this reflects badly on the club as a whole.  this includes things like sliding down between cars at the lights, going the wrong way around roundabouts, changing lanes so you can win the sprint without looking behind for cars, hogging the bike path (on the odd times that we actual use them), overtaking other cyclists and cutting back in too aggressively, etc, etc.

we have a big presence out there, so lets make sure it is a positive one.

ride routes 30th april & 1st may

ok, so it looks like the weather has finally turned.  no more 30 deg days and wednesday was wet from start to finish.  however, that could be all the rain we get for winter, but we will have to see.  the temp has dropped as well but not really cold yet.  it is interesting some of the conversations revolving around what to wear on the ride.  soon it will be undergarment, bibs, jersey, arm warmers, vest, knee warmers, socks, shoes, bootie covers, long fingered gloves and riding beanie under the helmet.  i am going to need to set my alarm clock for 10 min earlier to allow time to get dressed.

also congratulations to a few rouleurs that have new additions to their families (babies not bikes). michael roper, raphael chee and james fox have recently had family expansions.  don’t expect to see them any time soon. 🙂

racing – the tom lowry memorial race is on this weekend down at collie and there are a few heading down across all grades.  coming up soon is the state time trial championships so if you want to see how you rate against others in the group against the clock, then here is your chance.

members benefits – i am just finalising the last of the shop deals that you can get as members.  for those that are not aware, i have organised with a bunch of business for certain items that can be purchased at a discounted rate when you show your south perth membership card.  if anyone else out there has a business that they want to have involved with this, let me know.  it doesn’t have to be a bike related business, just one that you are happy to offer club members a discount on certain items.  if you want any more info, email me.

ride routes – nothing too special about the rides this week.  probably more than anything will be the 9 degrees overnight temp that will catch some people out.  don’t say i didn’t tell you to buy your winter kit when we did the last order.

wednesday morning ride

as the uci race is now over, the wednesday morning ride at 5:30am will have it’s course changed a bit.  it will still stay around kings park, but will take a convoluted course around the place which see you heading up and down each road in the park.  it also only uses mounts bay road for the first lap so that we won’t be on it when the traffic increases.  it still starts at 5:30am under the narrows on the cityside.

spr wednesday 39.65km (kings park)

basically it is as follows – one lap of the uci course (3rd road when turning back onto mounts bay rd). back up spring/malcolm st, along kings park rd, down thomas, in kings park via poole, up forrest rd (cardiac hill), down may, out of the park at poole, up thomas, along kings park rd, back in the park at frasers, down lovekin, back up may to finish

ride routes 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th april

so it is a long, long, looooong weekend ahead.  this means either lots of riding or lot of time for things other than riding, or lots of time to fit both the riding and other things in.

easter camp – this weekend.  still room if you want to come down and stay.  $25 per person per night, bring your own everything.  see the link on the right menu for more info.  rides, family activities, hot tub.

ride routes – if you want, there are over 500kms of rides possible this weekend.  anyone want a crack at it???  being a long holiday weekend we also have the problem that that majority of our ride leaders will be away.  toby, carol and myself will be at the easter camp, julian is at liege-bastonge-liege and mark_s is away.  now a lot of you have been riding with us for a long time, so now it is time to step up.  there is no-one assigned to kick off the saturday rides, so i am after a willing soul with a loud voice, to make sure the rides all have leaders and are kicked off at the right time.  the club itself is more than just the handful of people that lead the groups, so you all need to take responsibility at some stage.  also, if someone does take the reins of a group, show some respect to that person as they are only trying to keep the group together for the safety of the club.  as the uci race has now finished, starting next week, i will be spending saturday mornings with each of the different groups to make sure things are going ok.

easter camp – update

well it is easter this weekend and so the inaugural spr easter camp is about to kick off.  there is a link here to the camp page which has been updated with costs, directions, who is coming and what we are doing.

so far there are about 26 adults and 11 kids coming down, but only 8 of the dorm beds are being used.  we still have plenty of room if you want to join us.  send an email through soon so we can add you to the list.  you don’t have to stay all three nights and you don’t even have to bring your bike if you don’t want to.

this is a social event with a bit of riding involved and families are more than welcome.

ride routes 16th & 17th april

it all comes down to this.  all that training for one day.  i think we know pretty much every bump in that circuit by now.  by the end of 8 laps, my butt will know them all too well.

uci road race – so a few of the boys took a trip over to rottnest for some uci tt action and well done to them. especially jason who managed 12th overall.  the focus now turns to the road race around kings park.  as you would have seen in a previous post, we have quite a few spr riders involved.  the race starts at 7:30am and will complete up to 8 laps of the kings park circuit.  there is a feedzone at the top of the malcolm st hill where we will attempt to set up an spr tent to hand out water bottles to the competitors.  after your saturday morning ride come along to watch as we will appreciate the support.

3/5 dams – there are a few spr riders that are attempting the 3 & 5 dams ride on sunday.  there are even a couple that i have seen on both the uci and dams start list.  makes me feel a bit soft.  good luck to those that are involved.

easter camp – this is on the following weekend so we need to get things finalised.  i have set up a page which duplicates the previous post.  there is an accommodation link at the bottom which lists who is coming for which nights and whether they are in the dorm or tent.  if you are no longer coming or want to be added to the list please get in contact with us via email.  the itinerary currently only has the rides, but we will add the other family activities to it soon.  hope to see you there.

ride routes – i will be tackling the uci race on saturday, so i leave you in the hands of julian for the day.  currently we do not have a ride leader for the transitional group, so it would be good if someone from the faster groups volunteered to ensure that people learn the correct techniques.  the saturday ride routes both come home from the east as mounts bay road will be closed to traffic.  sunday will try to get a glimpse of the dams ride as it rides the other way.

saturday 16th april
