updated novice rides – additional

due to the influx of novice riders lately and their desire to improve their cycling, a couple more novice training sessions have been organised for during the week.

saturday 7:00am – coode st carpark.  the usual novice ride will still be on.

tuesday 6:00am – frasers carpark, kings park – interval session

wednesday 5:00pm – frasers carpark, kings park – interval session

sunday 6:30am – coode st carpark, south perth – century ride to rockingham and back.  (this may not be a regular event, but we will see how it goes)

these have been updated on the front page.

if you know of any novice riders that you feel would benefit in getting into group riding and developing skills, please point them in our direction.

for those regularly taking part in these or any of our training rides, it is recommended that you join the club as a member to get (at a minimum) a recreational licence.  this will provide a bit of extra cover in the unfortunate event of an accident.  see the membership page for further details.

Ride Routes – January 9 and 10

A nice humid change for Saturday morning is expected so bring lots of water for this one.  We’ll head into Canning Vale via Canning Highway, Stock Rd and South St.  The split will be on South St and the fast group will continue along Ranford Rd, into Warton Rd and back to the Bell Tower via Albany Highway.  The main group will turn into Bannister Rd, then Nicholson Rd and back to the Bell Tower via Albany Highway.

It ‘s ride 4 all around this weekend as on Sunday we’ll tackle one of my favourite routes, the trip out to Mundaring Weir via Greenmount, then back to Kalamunda.

Painathlon

For those who occasionally get off their bicycles and do some running, this looks like an interesting challenge.

The Perth Painathlon was dreamt up and organised by Jono Hague. Jono came up with the concept of attempting 10 of his favourite (and most challenging) Perth runs in the one day, cycling in between each challenge. He then thought he would try and encourage others to participate with the goal being to raise as much money as possible for Variety, the children’s charity.

A short video on the 2009 edition

Anyone who is bored in August should consider this. 🙂

It’s for a good cause and also raises the profile of the club.

The ones who couldn’t get enough – January 3, Hills ride +

short report of the additional climb …

As the main part of the group took off to the coffee shop Julian already showed some signs of dehydration as he couldn’t really determine which side the cars were coming from. 😉

The five of us headed down Gooseberry Hill (after we found it because all the intersections somehow look the same). The decent was really quick with my speedo hitting about 82 km/h, but over all too soon. Unfortunately that bend half way down the hill forces you to slow down to approximately half that speed. We turned right at the roundabout and had to tackle Ridgehill Road before we could go up the ZigZag. Lisa said she had forgotten that there was a bonus climb up to the Zig Zag…
Dean kept on going straight once we were at the top and turned off back up the Zig Zag. That left us with 4 people. I didn’t know how the other guys were feeling but Ridgehill Road always takes so much out of me that i very often like to just get off the bike on top of that really not too hard “hill”… it’s really weird.
We kinda regrouped at the turn off and started as a group of four. I started to increase the pace a little bit just to see what would happen and if one of the John or Dale would attack. As we reached the first switch back I had a small gap to those two and Lisa was maybe hundred meters further back. All three of us kept encouraging her to minimize that gap (I don’t know if that was helpful…)
Up to the top we really didn’t really smash it too hard, but kept a nice pace and i think John (please correct me if it was Dale, i still mix you guys up, and i am not good with names) was at my tail up the whole way. Just as the road got a little bit steeper towards the end i managed to gap him a little bit.
points on top: Heiko, John, Dale, Lisa

After a chat up the top and a few minutes of rest we decided to go down Gooseberry again and jump onto Great Eastern Highway back to town. We rolled through once we were on Kalamunda Road. Apart from Lisa’s flat before Great Eastern we had a pretty good run home. Thanks for the extra loop, I really enjoyed it, we should do that again next week!

Oh, before I forget: Julian, here is the version for the points: All four of us came in pretty much all together and i think it was a photo finish on top, so we should all get 5 points. 😉

NDCC Criterium this Sunday 10th January

By Toby

The Northern District Cycling Club is holding a crit this Sunday.  I took part in the last one before Christmas, and thought it was a well run event and definitely worth the effort.  It was a shame that I was the only one flying the SPR colours on the day – so I thought I’d invite some more people to take up the challenge this weekend.

There will be three grades running with the following race durations:

A-grade : 50mins + 2 laps

B-grade : 40mins + 2 laps

C-grade : 30mins + 2 laps

I managed to place 3rd in C-grade last time, and Dave S (@madrapper) has also picked up a third place in the past – that might help you gauge what grade to enter.

Details

Location: Innovation Circuit, Wangara

Date: Sunday 10th January

Time: B-grade starts at 8:00am, A&C-grades start at 8:45am.

Cost: Noms are $15 and day licenses are available for $20 on the day.

Main Group Saturday.

Ride report by Nev.

Main Group.
The two groups split at Garrett Road with 60% of the riders going with the fast group.
Carl and One other rider led the group from the carpark past Ascot onto Guildford Road.
We went along Guildford Road tried a bit of a roll thru once we past Tonkin Hway, Into the breeze we split with just the stronger riders at the front then a gap to there rest of us.
Russ went to the front to slow the group down (This does not mean when Russ goes to the front the group naturally slows down), to give a couple a chance to catch up.
Then on to Benara Road and started rolling thru which work well.
Only a couple of things,Once you get to the front and slide into the inside just slow casino online down a little as you will be travelling faster hopefully than the inside line.(Feel where the bike behind is and adjust your speed, this rider should not have to sprint or have to brake to get your back wheel and the outside rider should not have to also push harder to get in front of you ) .
When moving from the outside line to the inside line slide across smoothly, it can also help if the inside rider tells you when your ok to move across.
Last but not least we all should not let gaps happen in the line, I,m guilty of it when your mind wanders to the waitress at Atomic or fatigue, but we must keep on top of it as it affects the line further back and if a rider is struggling they will find it hard to catch up.
We pushed along Benara until we lost one a Young Girl, Daryl had gone back to help then Russ went also, the group pulled over and allowed a regroup.
The rest of the went as normal tried a roll thru on Wheatley Cres but it did not work from then on it was everyman for himself. The sprint I,m not sure , but I think also changing the finish here to this side of the lights would good, there is a big green sign showing Vic Ave or something that may be an option.(I”m not sure why it would even worry me).
