Novice Ride Report Saturday 19th December

by dr ronny

Today we were trying our new route. After a vote of confidence by Pete, we set off with the largest number of people I’ve seen on the novice ride since I “joined” a few weeks ago. It wasn’t till I was 30 metres down Coode St when Emma reminded me that I was heading the wrong way. (Just checking everyone knew the route :). So we did a u-turn and got on the bike path heading west towards the Narrows, crossing on the eastern side and then negotiating the giant puddle on the bike path at the bottom of the northeast corner which is there every week.

We got onto Mounts Bay Rd and Tracy and Emma set the pace. The right hand turn onto Thomas Rd at the end was well negotiated. Emma was smart enough to call me through to the front leaving myself and Tracy to lead. Lynda (who apparently has been sick this week) began to puff like I’ve never heard her puff before. The hill start at the red lights with Rokeby road caught a few people off guard before we gladly coasted down Nicholson Rd and then left onto Selby.

The hill on Lemnos street began to string out the group but I was pleased to see Lynda zoom by me on the downhill in chase of Tracey. We got to the end and turned left on Brockway. Lynda and Tracy had a small lead which stretched to almost 50m at one stage. This was the only part of the route that I had not ridden and I was disappointed to find that there was a lot of sand in the bicycle lane (which was not demonstrated on Googlemaps!). Mark, who was joining us today, kept the troops at the back in check and we made our way right onto Alfred to find another small rise.  I told people it would be our last hill as I heard some groans behind me and at the bottom of the hill we caught a glimpse of the Elite Racing Cycles “Ladies” Group (perhaps our bizarro world doubles??? Or perhaps, we are the bizarros???).

We saw them disappear up the road along Davies to Claremont and then went across Stirling Hwy and through Dalkeith. Tracy, who had been at the front the whole day was still going strong and powered all the way to home along the bike path. We beat the other groups by 15 minutes and it was nice taking the prime seats for once (get used to it boys! 🙂

Overall, I thought it went well, we didn’t get lost (I never had a doubt!) and at least it was something different. I’d like to thank Mark who kept the riders up the back (and out of my sight) out of trouble. We’ll probably make the route a little longer next time by heading out east and taking the Causeway and Riverside drive to begin with (thus avoiding the bike path and the Narrows) or by turning right at Brockway and going past Challenger stadium (to avoid the Brockway “beach”).

I won’t be there next week so Merry Christmas to all.

ride routes 19th & 20th december

sorry for the delay.  the cycling wa agm went till 11pm last night and was one of the most painful experiences i have had.  i may put up a report later so you all know what goes on at these events.

well it is the last ride before christmas and we will be taking a nice trip up north to the tv stations.  we will split the group just before the hill up past the tv stations and return via wanneroo rd.  just remember that you turn past the hospital as you are coming past kings park.

south perth rouleurs saturday ride 06 (tv stations)

sunday ride will be a double whammy of the both sides of the kahuna.  as the weather is getting hotter, water stops are becoming more crucial.  as such we may take a detour after the second climb to head across to the servo for a refill.

south perth rouleurs sunday ride 15 (kahuna & canning mills)

cycling wa – agm

on thursday night cycling wa will be holding it’s agm.  all members are welcome and if you are interested in seeing what goes on behind the scenes of cycling wa feel free to come along.  i will be there as our official spcc delegate but other club observers are also welcome.

sunday 13th dec – welsh, obs, camel, goose

ride report by peter.

a hot, hot, hot day predicted so i came up with a new route that would allow us to stay close to kalamunda.  this would allow  some easy shortcuts if the temperature got too much and they needed to head straight to the coffee shop.  there was one new climb around the camel farm, but the rest were just other hills cobbled together.  there were a couple of up and back climbs so all up there would be maximum elevation gained for minimal distance.  hopefully that also meant minimal time.

there would have been about 20 or so at the carpark, but it was clear that the doctors were plotting an early breakaway as to escape the mid-day heat.  we headed out along welshpool rd and picked up mike and the “abdominal brothers”.  once we hit the climb proper, the pecking order soon sorted itself out.  jonny was on the front and setting the pace early on until i came past dragging the rest.  i managed to keep pushing on till about halfway up the first half before mike came past to set the pace.  he didn’t attack and held a nice pace to lesmurdie rd.

a break had formed and there were about 6 or 7 of us all together.  as the climb turned to rolling hills, some others started coming around mike to push the pace a bit higher on the shorter climbs.  chris took the first turn at the front and then shao had a crack.  as we passed the girls school, heiko did a stint but in hindsight was too early and too long.  i was just biding my time waiting for the last climb and i noticed brodie sitting at the back of the pack not doing much.  we turned the final corner and started the last pinch to the top.  once the end was in sight, i attacked the group and tried to make a break.  brodie was straight onto it and chris jumped on his wheel.  i looked back to see the train that i was towing, and then promptly ran out of puff.  chris took advantage and attacked straight away and brodie sat neatly on his wheel.  i had blown about 100 metres too early and watched as brodie came around for the points.  mike scooped me up before the end and shao trailed not far behind me.

1st – brodie, 2nd – chris, 3rd – mike, 4th – peter, 5th – shao.

a regroup at the servo and it was a matter of sitting in the shade and filling up the drink bottles.  i had frozen half of my bottle overnight and it was back to liquid already.  we had a couple more climbs before the next servo so i recommended that everyone fill up now.

we continued on to lawnbrook which would take us straight to the observatory climb.  a nice descent proceeded it and alistair and davina took advantage and managed to gap the field a bit.  the road kicks up straight away and the 15% gradient means that you go from 70km/hr to close to zero in a short amount of time.  the correct gear selection is crucial and i left it in the small ring for the descent to get and advantage on the climb.

we caught the leaders and started the climb in earnest.  jonny was at the front setting the pace but there was a fair crowd forming up behind.  i wanted to thin the numbers a bit so made a few small attacks then settled back to the same pace.  heiko came with me each time, but the smart guys were just sitting behind mike’s wheel getting a nice tow back to me each time.  the attacks managed to shake a few riders and the group had been reduced to about 6 or so.  i was caught off guard when mike attacked and i actually pulled a mono when i went to follow his wheel.  chris jumped on mine but i found that i couldn’t hold it for very long.  i waved chris through and sat up to catch my breath.  we had gapped the rest of the group so i was stuck in no-mans land again.

as i started the final push up to the observatory, heiko and jonny caught me so i sat in for a while.  up ahead i could see mike and chris battle it out for line honours as the gate approached quickly.  i went to make a move and started my uphill sprint.  however, jens was not having any of it and we were soon sprinting up the hill towards the finish.  i ran out of puff before him and sat up as my heart rate was in the “spew-zone”.  jonny came in for fifth.

1st – chris, 2nd – mike, 3rd – heiko, 4th – peter, 5th – jonny.

we waited a while for simon and dr carl as someone said that they had a mechanical.  we decided to head back down the hill as we were going back down the same way and would pass them.  they must have already turned off for coffee as we didn’t see them at all.

the next climb was going to be kind of new.  we would turn right after bickley valley and head towards mundaring weir.  towards the top of the first climb we would turn off at fern road to loop around and finish where the camel farm road joined back onto mundaring weir rd.  as we hit the weir rd, a couple of riders turned left instead of right as old habits die hard so they squandered their advantage over the smaller climbs.

we settled into a rhythm and the bottom half of the climb wasn’t too bad as the majority of the group stayed together.  the road steepens up before we turned and that is where things started to string out a bit.  the camel farm loop did not really contain big climbs, but rather a bunch of smaller ones where you could gain an advantage with some well timed attacks.

on one of the longer climbs, mike did attack and chris tried to go with him.  i set my own pace to the top and brodie and brother jules were on my tail.  on the descent we managed to catch chris who had slowed after an altercation with a 4wd trying to take up the whole road.  we sped past the camel farm but then they all attacked on the last stretch and i had nothing by then.

1st – mike, 2nd – chris, 3rd – brodie, 4th – jules, 5th – peter.

sitting in the shade while waiting to regroup, we bemoaned the lack of water taps in the area.  next time i may need to make the finish point the camel farm itself as there are some facilities there.  we headed back towards kalamunda and down the winding descent before starting the fourth climb.  i started my clock just to see what time we would do and set myself into a nice tempo.  i was dragging the rest of the field till about halfway up when mike came around with chris and brodie in tow.  i jumped on board with heiko and we managed to sit in till the flatish section.  i looked back to see that we had dropped the others and that this would be the final selection.  heiko went to the front and set the pace on the false flat and we were happy to sit in.  once the hill started again i am sure i made it to the front and thought that i could keep pushing on.  mike came past with davina on his tail.  she had managed to bridge across along the false flat and was now challenging mike for the line honours.  unsure of the finish, she pulled up a bit early and mike managed to take the points.  brodie and chris rolled me before the line so i picked up fifth.  my time was only 8:18 which was only 12 sec quicker then when i did the same course on wednesday by myself, so nothing to celebrate.

1st – mike, 2nd – davina, 3rd – brodie, 4th – chris, 5th – peter.

a regroup at the servo and an opportunity to fill the bottles again.  it was definitely hot in the sun, but overall it didn’t seem too bad when riding.  a number of riders headed straight for the coffee shop but about 8 of us sped down kalamunda road to the bottom.  i was not really feeling it at the start of the climb and let the main group of chris, jonny, davina, alistair and heiko get away.  once we hit the little plateau i knew that i needed to make an effort as the next two sections were going to hurt.  on the first pinch chris and jonny broke away and i managed to pick up alistair.  heiko and davina were making there way up and i came past just before the final turn where you can see the finish line.  unfortunately that was pretty much all i had and they both came back past me before the end.  i actually contemplated getting off the bike and walking at one stage, but thought that would look pretty bad.  i slowly made my way to the finish.

1st – chris, 2nd – jonny, 3rd – davina, 4th – heiko, 5th – peter.

from there it was to the coffee shop and with only 5 staying for a brew the rest teamed up with the early group to ride home together.  brother dan showed us his awesome handing skills when he came a cropper after getting tangled with the chairs.  as jules said, as long as his wheels are ok.  there was some reluctance to make a move as it was getting hotter and hotter but we finally headed home.  that wasn’t till after brodie’s failed attempts to chat up a local girl who was sitting at the next table.  he had all the moves down and we were astounded that she couldn’t resist his sweaty charms.

the ride home was terrible.  once we came off the hills it was hot.  hot and stuffy and dry.  the water in the bottles was pretty damn hot by now and everyone was suffering.  we rolled through to spread the load but it seemed to take forever.  i walked through the door at 11:30 and was glad to reach the air-con.

saturday 12th dec – christmas breakfast

ride report by peter

it was the morning of the christmas breakfast and we had a substantial turnout at the carpark come 7am.  i relayed the news that young sam that occasionally comes out on the sunday hills ride had been in a bike accident and is laid up with a broken back.  he was on the bike path and had a head on with another bike while going through a tunnel.  it highlights the risks that we face that even on a bike path, you need to be aware of your surroundings and to ride to conditions.  legally you can only ride single file on a bike path so that plus the other unpredictable users mean that we avoid them as much as possible.

our route today would need to finish at jerry’s house in city beach so we made the group head south east first to find some extra kms.  skirting between curtain uni and technology park we headed back to the city via shepperton road.  i made the comment that it seems strange not attacking or chasing on this stretch of road as it is usually our last run into home.  we took the scenic route along riverside drive and mounts bay road before heading up thomas rd past kings park.  the main group continued along to reach scarborough beach rd while the fast group took a detour into the park.

a navigational error by the front guys meant that the first half of the group missed the turn to cardiac hill and had to double back.  some continued on to skip the hill and met up with us at the top.  as the group split quite near me, i managed to start the hill at the front and set the pace to the top.  there were a couple on my wheel but near the top i think that it was just jason keeping up.  the fast boys who missed the turn were coming up fast and brendan came past us just as the gradient softened.  a number of others soon overtook us in pursuit of brendan and jason managed to jump on the wheel.  i had spend a lot of my energy early so just rolled to the top.

we travelled back through the park and came out on saw ave which allowed us to get back onto thomas rd.  the pace was not high, but quite solid as we took off in pursuit of the main group.  i was fully expecting to catch them before we reached scarbs rd but they were nowhere to be seen.

i made the call to skip ewen st as we were already motoring along in pursuit and the hill was going to be there just to slow the fast group if we had managed to join back together.  the rolling hills did their job and there were many attacks on each pinch.  we picked up a couple of the main group, or should say past them by as the pace did not slow till we reached west coast hwy.

once we got there, the main group was waiting for the riders they had dropped so after a short time we were all back together.  there were some reports of some of the fast group making it back onto the main group and then taking ewen st.  i am assuming that they were the ones that skipped cardiac hill in kings park.

the group then cruised down westcoast hwy to city beach where we were to stop for our breakfast.  a few found the pace a little high for the final run so a couple of splinter groups formed up.  i was helping a couple along when we got split at the lights so came in a couple of minutes after the main group.  thankfully there was standing on the corner of jerry’s street so that we knew when to turn.

once dismounted it was quickly up to the tables of food that lorraine and the girls had prepared for us.  sharon was taking the money and giving out raffle tickets and it was good to see her out again.  it was very obvious why she was not on the bike today with less than 5 weeks to she is having a baby.

we had our raffle prize draw, but unfortunately the prizes had not made it from pbk in time so the winners received a picture of what they will get…eventually.  there were also a few gifts given out to recognise the effort that certain people have made throughout the last year.  carol for running the novice group, russell and nev for taking on the main group, julian for organising the sunday ride when i have not been available, kimbo for helping us get some club equipment and for going out of his way to welcome new riders and lorraine for consistently going above and beyond to promote the club and the community that we want to harbour.  i really appreciate the work that a lot of people have put into the club and to keep it growing.  last year at the christmas breakfast, we were just a group that did a few rides.  now one year on, we are an affiliated club, have a healthy membership and organise five training sessions per week.

i received the biggest, heaviest hamper that i have ever seen.  i am sure that the christmas hamper people don’t do a bike related hamper, but this one certainly ticked all the boxes.  i thank everyone that contributed to that.  i do appreciate the thought.  there were many useful things in the hamper so it should keep me going for a while.  ben also looked pretty cool in the capo cycling cap.  i also appreciate the kind words from lorraine and mark and also kate.

a massive thanks to jerry and tanya for letting us use their house and sorry about the pool.  i think that we can rename the jacobs brothers to the “abdominal brothers” as opposed to the “umbilical brothers”.  once one was in the pool, it seemed to be a contest to see who had the best abs.  unfortunately it also eventuated in a number of us seeing ryan’s bum after jonny grabbed to bibs part of his knicks.

so thank you all for a great year, and i look forward to growing the club with you in the future.

Dear Santa…

Dear Santa

ride routes 12th & 13th dec (including breakfast)

only 2 more saturday rides till christmas so we had better celebrate this one by making it our christmas breakfast.  as per the previous post, this ride will finish at jerry’s place in city beach.  if you haven’t rsvp’d yet, please scroll down till you find the previous post and let us know if you are coming.  this is mainly for catering purposes, so if you check the blog late, don’t worry, you can still come along.  just remember your $10 to cover all the food, drink and raffle prizes.  partners are welcome so you can show them who these crazy people are that are always hi-jacking your saturday mornings.

this is our second christmas breakfast as a group and as we are a year and a half old it is good to see it continuously growing.  the turn out at the joondalup race last week was excellent and a testament to what a great group of riders and support crew we have.  thanks to all that racedand helped out.  there were also a couple like scott and dave that had recently joined the club that wanted to know if we had a spare jersey so that they could ride in club colours.  podium finishes to jason and sandra as well as bec and davina made it a great (if not hot) day out.

anyway, on to this saturday’s ride.  we needed to add a few kms on as we are pulling up short in city beach.  therefore we will head south east first before cutting back towards the city.  skirting kings park, we make our way onto scarbs rd and then down west coast hwy.  to allow the fast group to work up an appetite, there will be a detour into kings park and up cardiac hill.  once we return to the ride route we will chase the main group until we catch them, then just sit in and let them dictate the pace.  another detour up the hill at ewen st before regrouping with the main group for an easy finish along west coast hwy.  dressing up or decorating your bike is optional and as it is predicted to be a hot one, i think i will give the santa suit a miss.

the novice group will do the usual ride and return to the carpark afterwards.  they will then drive to city beach to the breakfast.

south perth rouleurs saturday christmas breakfast ride

sunday is predicted to be 39 degrees.  as such, i have mapped out a new route that stays nice and close to kalamunda so that there is always an easy out if needed.  welshpool and lesmurdie rd followed by the observatory.  then a new hill aroudn teh camel farm before back up mundaring weir rd to kalamunda.  a final option (depending on the weather) to do gooseberry.  bring lots of food and water.

south perth rouleurs sunday ride 22 (welshpool & observatory & camelberg & gooseberry)

C Grade Joondalup Race 8 Dec 2009

C Grade- by Jason

My first ever cycling race, now I’ve raced before, motocross many years ago and motorcycle road racing in the WA state championships for the past couple of years. So I’m not new when it comes to racing of sorts. But like I said this would be my first ever cycle race. I had no idea what to expect- so on Saturday morning, after the SPR ride, myself and Matt did a little recon mission and drove up to check out the track. The idea was to ride the circuit to get a ‘better’ idea of what to expect. Not really knowing what to expect we got about 5 kms around and said to each other that maybe we should of done a lap in the car instead, no turning back now. By the time we finished the lap we nearly passed out in the back of the van, damn it was hot. We cooled off on the way home in a mates swimming pool.

Sunday morning I woke early and sorted myself out some breakfast and before I knew it Matt and Hanna where at my house, now i’m not sure but I think this is where the nerves really kicked in. We finished loading the van and off we went with thoughts of ‘why the hell am I doing this?’ Too late to turn back now.

We arrived at the course and set ourselves up opposite the SPR tent. Lorraine had excelled her self and sorted out drinks and food. The next hour seemed to go too quickly. Before I knew it we where off. ( I should mention though- the support vehicle for C grade was piloted by Hanna with only two sets of wheels in the back- mine and Matts, thought there would have been a few more- Thanks to Hanna and the other girl that volunteered- I never caught her name sorry)
Anyway back to it- We started off up the hill and all seemed to be good, the speed was steady and I was feeling good. The first lap saw a few attacks but nothing that was going to leave us behind. I saw a couple of SPR guys and noticed Stu on the front driving up the pace, I was hoping that maybe we could take it easy for the first couple of laps and hit it hard on the last. NOPE- we where off, the attacks seemed to stretch the group out a bit. Not too sure how much as I was trying to keep myself in the forward part. These attacks drove the pace up faster and faster. There was one breakaway that no one wanted to bridge. So off I went, it was harder than I thought, but finally made it across, I looked back and saw that no one else had bothered to come across, no wonder there was no one helping me. This left about 6 of us in the breakaway group which didn’t last long- there was a young guy that pulled away on the front of us and we never saw him again. Not sure who he was but I believe he got disqualified for riding in a class that he shouldn’t of. He does deserve some credit, he was a machine that powered alone for for one and a half laps, and was on the front for the whole race and the instigator of all the attacks.

Back to us- with the young rider gone into the distance, it left 5 of us, which soon turned to 3. Two managed to pull away and just seemed to be out of reach for the remainder of the race. The three of us that rode together where all from SPR. I called for short turns on the front to try and catch the two other guys that just seemed to be slightly out of reach. They must of sensed the 3 of us closing in and upped the pace. For the next one and a half laps the 3 of us worked well together. The final lap I could tell we where finding it hard, the pace dropped as the wind picked up. But the 3 of us soldiered on, Matt and Stu where troopers and worked hard. We decided that we would all go across the line together. It was a great effort and was very surprised to hear my name called for 3rd place. Stu and Matt deserved 3rd just as much as myself, so I split the prize money between us.
