Ride Routes 8 – 14th February

OK. So I posted lots to social media at the time, and lots to the blog over the Nationals in January.

However… between my week one update and Nationals wrap-up there was a gap. So here goes a Nationals wrap-up part two.

First up, huge congratulations to Sophia Sammons for her 3rd place in the Under-23 Women’s Individual Time Trial.

Read all about it here.

Second, I want to acknowledge our Masters Criterium teams. Kudos to everyone who made the team and represented SPR on the big stage at the Nationals in Northbridge.

SPR W1 in category Womens Masters 1-4:

  • Olesya Alutina
  • Rhianna Farrell
  • Corrie Johnstone
  • Rebecca Kelly
  • Amanda Nabi
  • Mel Raybould
  • Alejandra Rojas Jordon
  • Liz Verbiesen

SPR M2 in category Mens Masters 4-6:

  • Lyle Robertson

SPR M1 in category Mens Masters 1-3

  • Toby Brown
  • William Celis
  • Jace Collingridge
  • Elar Kalda
  • Jarrad Page
  • Matt Rice

Thank you to all, and kudos to the green podiums that the team brought home on the day!! 💚💪🏻

🏆 National Champion Team – Womens Masters 1-4

🏆 National Champion Team – Mens Masters 1-3

🏆 First Place – Mens Masters 1-3 – Matt Wardynec

🥈 Second Place – Womens Masters 1-4 – Amanda Nabi

🥉 Third Place – Womens Masters 1-4 – Rhianna Farrell

Special mention to Simon Jones who placed 4th in Mens Masters 4-6. And special mention also to Nicola Pursell and Jane Yang – SPR could not quite field a Womens Masters 5+ team and so they raced to win with Vanessa Johnson and the 4Five+ team! Well done!!

Check out all of the photos below. Not to mention, some excellent write-ups in the news – see Perth transformed as city hosts AusCycling Road National Championships – ABC News.

See you out on the bike.

RCCC Henk Vogels Snr Memorial Criterium 2025 — Another huge day of racing with more green on the podium. Well done to everyone that participated 💚

  • 🥉 Kyle Mackintosh – 3rd, Junior B
  • 🥉 Nikki Pursell – 3rd, C Grade Women
  • 🥉 Liz Verbiesen – 3rd, D Grade Women
  • 🥈 Phillip Barnes – 2nd, C Grade Men
  • 🏆 Rob Stuart – 1st, D Grade Men
  • 🥉 Alastair Brook – 3rd, D Grade Men

I know everyone will be interested so I would like to provide an update on Luke Winson. Luke was racing in C Grade and came down hard on the last lap (from the front of the race) after a pedal strike. Thankfully, no one else came down. However, Luke did hurt his hand – requiring surgery – though I am pleased to report this went well with Luke needing several weeks recovery. The club gave Luke a hamper during the week and we wish him all the best for his recovery.

Only a few crits to go this summer season, so reach out if you’re interested.

SPR Italy Trip 2025 — We’ve had a great response to the EOI and the trip is on! Two places left in fact! Details below including link to EOI.

Juniors Ride — This Saturday we will focus on endurance. We will start from Shelley (https://maps.app.goo.gl/o7AGNVABpmvaAFzc8) at 10.00am. Our ride will end at Tribute Cafe in Shelley. There will be 2 rides with the aim to ride both of them at a moderate pace.

Long ride (35km) for the more advanced riders
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/330217616
This ride is mostly on a bike path. There is just a little obstacle: when we reach the end of the canning river regional park bike path, we have to cross (at the traffic light) Nicholson Rd and Spencer Rd. it is a bit tricky, we need to cross in small groups of 4 or 5 people max.

Short ride (17km) for newcomers and beginners
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/330218261

My estimate is 2 hours for the long ride and 1 hour for the short one.

Lastly, it was wonderful to see SPR green on display in the Juniors racing last week at the Henk Vogels criterium!

From the Ride Coordinator — Benara Rd is the route for this Saturday’s ride. A reminder to all groups to move up to the “starting line” as the previous group departs.

There’s a chance of showers on Sunday morning, so be careful and have a safe ride.

TDU 2025 Did Not Disappoint

By Claire Tyrrell

The mission to Adelaide for the nation’s biggest cycling race is always worth the effort.

And this rang true this year more than ever, given it was the 25th Tour Down Under.

A keen group of South Perth Rouleurs travelled across to the South Australian capital for the TDU this month, including myself, Amanda Nabi, Andrew Ballam, Julia Christensen, Adam Britten, Tom Goerke, Ben and Alison Thorman. Other club members included Andrew Williams, David Mennary, Ray and Nola Smith, Doug Pavlovich and Mark Sinclair, Simon Jones, Serena Smith, Michael Barry, Elar Kalda, Jarred Anderson and Paul Prottey.

We were even joined by interstate SPR members Sam and Liam Walker, who ventured from Victoria for the fun.

The schedule varied for each of us (and some rode their bikes more than others – I’m looking at you Ben!), but largely we followed the race as best we could. This year’s tour involved three women’s stages and six men’s stages (there’s strong speculation they will include a fourth women’s stage next year, thank goodness).

The event provided ample spectating opportunities, including packed start lines, KOM and QOM points brimming with atmosphere and exhilarating sprint and hilltop finishes. We witnessed WA gun Sam Welsford blast across the line for three spectacular stage wins – the lead outs from his Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe teammates were impeccable.

For me, a highlight was seeing young climber and polka dot jersey winner Fergus Browning’s parents watch their son claim the King of the Mountain points as he pedalled towards Mt Lofty – their pride was palpable.

Another standout moment was when Ray Smith pointed out a koala perched in a tree on the way to McLaren Vale for the fifth stage of the men’s race – thanks Ray!

Some of us were fortunate enough to rub shoulders with some of cycling’s greatest athletes, including Mark Cavendish who made a special trip across for the event. I sadly did not get to meet Cav, though I’m still glowing from my picture with Peter Sagan at the 2017 TDU!

The McLaren Vale stage is always an absolute standout of the TDU, because it involves a full day out with my SPR buddies and a brilliant view of the race from Willunga Hill. Once again, Andrew Ballam organised a fantastic ride out to the hill that included a stop to watch the start and a prime position on Willunga Hill. We got to watch the pros ride the hill twice, with the second time marking the end of the stage.

It was a thrilling finish, with Ecuadorian Ineos Grenadier rider Jhonatan Narváez battling it out to win the stage and claim victory in the TDU.

The long ride back was made a lot easier for me thanks to the fine company of Andrew Ballam – this guy deserves a medal for all the work he does organising rides at TDU and for his patience helping the back markers.

This year marked his and Amanda’s 12th Tour Down Under – and may there be many more.

I know there will be for me!

RCCC Australia Day Criterium 2025 — We had a fabulous turn-out at the Australia Day crit this past week. Steve brought the SPR Van (kudos) and we had both supporters and racers out in force. Huge congratulations to Alastair and Nikki for their podiums 💚💪🏻.

  • 🥉 Nikki Pursell – 3rd, C Grade Women
  • 🏆 Alastair Brook – 1st, D Grade Men

This was Alastair’s first criterium so well done. And Nikki has been working on race strategy all season, and it looks like it is working!

Only a few crits to go this summer season, so reach out if you’re interested.

Juniors Ride — This weekend we will focus on climbing and we will meet at the DNA tower in Kings Park (https://maps.app.goo.gl/PUdiAZSDHZGmardQ7) at 10.30am on Saturday morning. The weather looks favourable for Saturday but do not forget the sunscreen and some water. For the young ones and newcomers we will practice some skills in a small car park (https://maps.app.goo.gl/aUG6JRwVPXVB2o3p6) and we will test our legs with only one climb. Please note we will all meet at the DNA tower car park at 10.30am.

During the ride I will need to split the group. I will give you more details on Saturday, but just remember that we will all end the ride at the Cafe (Botanical Kiosk Kings Park) next to the Kings Park visitor Centre (here are the coords https://maps.app.goo.gl/GCE4mYdwPE3trkyt5)

From the Ride Coordinator — Keep an eye out for some of your Ride Leaders in their new white jerseys.

This week we are doing Murdoch & Freo for the Main & Fast groups. Due to the continuing bridgeworks, the route will be modified on the day. Stay on Preston Point Road until it hits Canning Hwy where we will turn right. From Canning Hwy we will turn right onto Stirling Hwy, cross the bridge, and then turn left onto Tydeman Rd to continue the route as planned.

SPR Juniors

Juniors Ride — For this upcoming Saturday, we have planned a session focusing on racing tactics and strategies for the more advanced juniors. We’ll be practicing along Riverton Drive in Shelley.

For our younger riders and newcomers, we’ll be running a skills session along this course: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/328282383. We’ll repeat this a few times, focusing on rolling and taking turns etc.

We will meet at the usual spot in Shelley (https://maps.app.goo.gl/xjCWxTHdJn6R2BGU8) at 10:30 AM.

From the Ride Coordinator — We have a long weekend coming up, so there are opportunities for extra KMs.

It is important to consider whether your actions(e.g. no hands) could jeopardise the group and refrain from those activities. It only takes a split second to cause an event that results in a prolonged break for one or more riders.

Communication is the key to a safe and successful group ride. When you are the rider at the front, you must call out all hazards(e.g. parked car, potholes) and indicate route directions, and following riders must pass it back down the group. Calls from the back of the group must also be passed to the front of the group. Remember that it can be even more difficult to hear in windy conditions.

Hi all,

So you may have seen the posts on social media (!!) regarding the Nationals, but I’ve not yet got to writing up a summary of the close to the Nationals from an SPR perspective – from amazing results in the Masters crits, a huge turnout and some great results in the Fondo, to the Road Race itself which saw SPR member Sophia Sammons podium in the Under 23s and locals Luke Durbridge and Cassia Boglio podium in the Elite Mens and Womens races.

Keep you eye out for a write-up next week capturing in particular the Masters Crits and Fondo results. And while you’re waiting, check out the latest Press Room Nationals update below.

In the midst of the Nationals, we’ve also seen the wrap-up of the RCCC Twilight World Champs this Tuesday just gone, with three SPR members on the podium for the overall series (podium photos below):

  • Mathew Wardynec – 1st place, B Grade
  • Elar Kalda – 3rd place, B Grade
  • John Ingham – 1st place, D Grade

If you were thinking about a Europe trip for 2025, please see below a callout to fill the final two places in our Italy trip later this year.

And sending a shoutout to SPR members heading to the Tour Down Under this week.

See you out on the bike.

SPR Italy Trip 2025 — We’ve had a great response to the EOI and the trip is on! Two places left in fact! Details below including link to EOI.

The Italian and Swiss Alps are calling all cyclists and partners. Ever wanted to conquer Passo dello Stelvio (image above), Passo del Gavia + Mortirolo out of Bormio, or out of Lake Como Lugano loop, Passo Agueglio, Giro del Lago di Como, Madonna del Ghisallo + Muro di Sormano. And why not try the Albula pass + Julierpass in Switzerland out of St Mortiz. This is a centre based, escorted trip including all transfers – nothing left to plan.

Only sixteen places are available for this trip 16th to 30th August 2025 – the tour starts and finishes at Milan Airport and includes 1 night Milan, 5 nights Bormio, 2 nights St Mortiz and 6 nights Lake Como. Bring your own bike or hire a high spec road bike or road e-bike – this trip suits all levels of cyclist with the road e-bike option.

The cost is $6,250 per person double occupancy; single supplement $1900, quality bike hire $900. This is excellent value for a fully supported trip with a van for luggage/bike transfers, sag wagon, mechanic and a European guide.

Please register your interest to participate via this non-binding EOI.

Route Map: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/327301218  (*)

Advanced Course (for more experienced juniors)
Start Location: Our usual spot in Shelley (https://maps.app.goo.gl/eXL4m5saMEZJnRd26)
Time: 10:00 AM
Route Map: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/327301376   (*)
Distance: 35.5 km

Both groups will meet in South Perth at 10:45 AM, where the riders from both courses will join up.

(*) The Garmin course does not pass through the new Boorloo Bridge as the Garmin maps are not yet updated

From the Ride Coordinator — The action this weekend shifts to Adelaide for the Tour Down Under, following the conclusion of a fantastic Road Nationals in Perth. We wish our Aussie riders all the best and safe riding for those of you travelling over to support your heroes.

Having the ride route uploaded on your computer, or in your head will contribute to a safe group ride. It greatly reduces the chance of a wrong turn – negatively impacting the group.

Ride Routes 11 – 17th January

Hi all,

So the nationals are here and well underway. We had a great showing with over 35 competitors in green yesterday for the Club TTT and we came away with 5 podiums. See below for all the details and a few photos. I will also post more photos on the SPR Facebook group.

Here are the SPR podiums – 3 gold medals and 2 bronze medals 💪🏻💚

🏆 Gold Medal – Masters Women 120+

🏆 Gold Medal – Masters Men 90+

🏆 Gold Medal – Masters Men 120+

🥉 Bronze Medal – Masters Women 120+

🥉 Bronze Medal – Masters Men 150+

Full results here.

Today we had the individual time trials and we had several SPR members riding across the grades.

Tomorrow is a big day, with criterium racing in Northbridge all day. We have a team in the first race of the day at 10:30am (Men Masters 1-3) with the Elite Womens and Mens crits at 4:00 and 5:15pm. If you can make it, get down and be part of the action.

SPR has teams in the following races (startlist here):

  • 10:30am – Men Masters 1-3
  • 11:00am – Men Masters 4-6
  • 12:00pm – Women Masters 1-4

Then over the weekend there is the road race, with the Elite Womens and Mens the final two races on Sunday.

This weekend Dome, whilst we need to navigate road closures on our Saturday group ride, will be open as normal. In fact, I think the bike racks will be out and available all weekend.

Finally, I’ve again posted the The Press Room’s Nationals update below. Worth checking out (they will be doing daily updates for the nationals).

See you out on the bike.

Bring your bike and enjoy the excitement from the roadside!

From the Ride Coordinator — The end of the SPR Saturday ride will be adjusted to accommodate the Nationals Road Race road closures (Ref: https://roadnationals.org.au/the-event/road-closures) . Please listen to your ride leaders and look out for pedestrians when using the pavement.

Hi all,

So the Nationals are nearly here!!

This will be an amazing event so I encourage you to head along to as many of the events as possible. The elite races will be epic – have a read here for the key riders including Perth riders Jai Hindley & Sam Welsford. There will be some SPR members in the elite races (Jarred Anderson in the Elite Mens and Kate Bonner & Sophia Sammons will be ones to watch racing the Elite Womens race) and we have a good showing in the Masters Crits with 2 mens & 1 womens teams racing in green. We also have 8 TT teams (6 mens and 2 womens) so make sure you check out these races. There are full start lists on EntryBoss.

If you have not already done so, make sure you check out the Road Nationals website https://roadnationals.org.au. There is lots of information including a Spectator Guide covering all of the races. And if you do not already listen to The Press Room podcast, I highly recommend checking out their preview of the 2025 Australian Road Nationals (link here or embedded below). Jethro and Tom regularly commentate at cycling events and the local crits 💪🏻.

Hopefully the Festive 500 kms was good to you. I am sure you will have done more than I managed this year – in my defence, I did celebrate a significant wedding anniversary this week 🙂

If you are interested in racing, check out the section below as there is lots of crit racing coming up this month, with the first races of 2025 this weekend.

Finally, I am justing finishing up the blog post covering our SPR Christmas Award winners for 2024 – check back after lunch.

See you out on the bike.

Ride Routes 28th December – 3rd January

Hi all,

Very short blog this week. Not to mention that I lost track of the days and almost forgot to write this.

More Public Holiday riding coming up this week, and hopefully your Festive 500 kms are on track. Enjoy the riding.

There is no racing this week, but check out the racing section below as there is lots of racing coming up. That includes racing opportunities at the Nationals not to mention a few extra crits.

If you have not already done so, make sure you check out the Road Nationals website https://roadnationals.org.au. There is lots of information on the racing – both spectating for the Elite races and participating. SPR’s club entries for the crits and TTT are getting finalised today but the Gran Fondo entries are individual and entries are still open.

Finally, AusCycling is still looking for volunteers – so if you are able to help, please check out the request here and sign up!

See you out on the bike.

3. NBCC 2025 AusCycling Criterium Championships (5/Jan)

4. WCMCC Kewdale Criterium (5/Jan)

5. RCCC Twilight World Champs #4 (7/Jan)

Juniors Ride — Next Saturday there will be no junior ride as we all take a well deserved Christmas break. Enjoy the festivities with your kids and perhaps consider a … new bike for our juniors 🙂

From the Ride Coordinator — Has everyone had some good holiday rides this past week? There are still more to come! On Saturday we are doing Ewen St. Would you believe that this has not been ridden for over a year? Enjoy the beautiful ocean views once you’ve crested Ewen St and are heading back down the coast. On New Year’s Day we will ride the public holiday north route. This one is always a club favourite.

It’s a bit late for Christmas, but if you fancy a bit of Goose we’ve got the ride for you on Sunday! Grnmt Goose for Short Hills and Zamia Darl Mund Dodd Obs for Long Hills. According to the database this has never been scheduled! It’s a nice long one for those of you doing your Festive 500/1000.

Hoping your 2025 is filled with much fun, adventure and many personal bests on two wheels. Most of all, we wish each and every one of you a safe 2025.

Happy New Year to all SPRouleurs and friends from the Ride Leaders Subcommittee 💚

Ride Routes 21st – 27th December

Hi all,

With Christmas this week, make sure you check out the ride routes below. Lots of time for riding, and SPR has options for you 💚

Crit season continued this week with Roues Chaudes putting on stellar events both Sunday and Tuesday.

Some photos below, including an updated leaderboard, and congratulations to SPR podiums:

  • Jane Yang – 1st Place, Women’s C Grade (Sunday, Summer Crit #2)
  • Mathew Wardynec – 1st Place, B Grade (Sunday, Summer Crit #2)
  • Simon Jones – 2nd Place, B Grade (Sunday, Summer Crit #2)
  • Mathew Wardynec – 1st Place, B Grade (Tuesday, Twilight World Champs #3)
  • John Ingham – 1st Place, D Grade (Tuesday, Twilight World Champs #3)

The racing has been spectacular. It has been excellent to see so many SPR members racing all across the grades. Not to mention highlights like getting to watch Luke Durbridge race, taking in the A Grade win from a breakaway on Tuesday after having put the entire field in the hurt locker. Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday evening in Perth racing.

Thanks to everyone who came along for our Christmas Ride and Awards last Saturday. We will post all the awards to the blog in the upcoming days.

I have a Nationals update, with SPR having lots of riders participating across the Gran Fondo, Masters Club Criterium, Team Trials and not to mention that we will have several SPR members racing in the Elite Womens Road Race. Finally, on the Nationals, whilst we have not been able to get a specific update on the needs, AusCycling is still looking for volunteers – so if you are able to help, please check out the request here and sign up!

Finally, we are not running an SPR competition this year but that does not mean there is not kudos on offer. Sign up on Strava for the Festive 500 and make sure you are a member of SPR on Strava so we can track club members on the leaderboard.

See you out on the bike.

Daniel

Racing this weekend – If you want to race, or get in on the action watching others race, read on.

1. It’s Christmas… more racing in the New Year…

2. Besides, you have Festive 500 kms to do 💚

Juniors Ride — This Saturday we will ride from Raffles (https://maps.app.goo.gl/4z8wJLesM4CsRj3x5) to Kings Park and return along the Freeway PSP.

We will enjoy a treat at the Botanic cafe’ and return back to Raffles in Canning Bridge.

Given the quite warm temperature predicted for the weekend, let’s meet at 8.30am this time.

From the Ride Coordinator — It’s heating up again this weekend so make sure you are hydrated and have enough water & electrolyte for the busy cycling week ahead and the Festive 500.

The Saturday lineup in the carpark is back to normal. Please remember to move with your group closer to the start as the previous groups leave. Main 2 & 3 should gather in the parking bays nearest to the river and keep the roadway free for other traffic.

Sunday short hills have a new route to try – Kal Glenisla Palm Lwnbrk. Please familiarise yourself with it. Enjoy! Christmas Day sees the return of the popular Christmas Day Ride organised by Andrew Ballam. Checkout the SPR Facebook page for details (link below). On Boxing Day we have scheduled the Public Holiday South ride. Take Stirling Hwy to get over the river to avoid  the ongoing works on the Fremantle Traffic Bridge.

Wishing you a safe and festive holiday!

Hi all,

The crit season is in full swing with both Peel and Roues Chaudes running races during the week just gone.

Check out some photos below, and kudos to both Woj and Elar who podiumed. Also shoutout to Woj, Elar and Bec who have points in the Twilight World Champs points table after race 2 (full table below).

Don’t forget to dress up for our Christmas Ride this Saturday. And please read Ride Coordinator’s post below on the ride routes for this week (a little different).

Finally, I would like to acknowledge Tom Goerke, who has served as Club Secretary for the past several years. He has recently stepped down from the SPR Committee to make space for other volunteer commitments. Tom remains on the Race Subcommittee. Thank you for all your contributions Tom!

See you out on the bike.

Daniel

2. WCMCC Herne Hill – Summer Graded Road Race

3. RCCC Twilight World Champs #3

Juniors Ride — As mentioned earlier in the blog post, this Saturday is the SPR Christmas Ride, and we will celebrate with some awards for our members at Dome in the city. For the first time, two awards will be presented to our juniors.

So, our ride will start from our usual spot in Shelley (https://maps.app.goo.gl/7QGqdMNEiPny8uxg6) at 8am and head to the city for the awards presentation.

You can find the course details here: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/322645452

From the Ride Coordinator —

All riders note the different start this Saturday. Due to the Christmas Ride & Awards, we will have two main routes. This is similar to what we’ve done the past few years. The aim is to get everyone away quickly and back to Dome safely, so that you can enjoy the festivities and presentations.

The two main routes are:

  • Fast and Main 1 will do Creswell and Herdsman. Remember there are roadworks being carried out on the Hotham Bridge and the southbound lane is closed.
  • Main 2, Main 3 and Main 4 will do Stock and Shelley
  • Transitional will do Trans Mosman

Groups will gather in separate zones of the carpark, with Fast and M1 on the West side (as per normal), and M2, M3, M4 and Transitionals in the middle row of the carpark (as per the old marshalling layout).

Note:
Main 2, 3 and 4 should arrive for an earlier departure than normal.
M1.4 becomes a no drop ride as they are last to leave on the Cresswell & Herdsman route.

Rollout schedule:
Main 2.1 – Stock & Shelley
Main 2.2 – Stock & Shelley
Main 3 – Stock & Shelley
Main 4 – Stock & Shelley
Fast – Cresswell & Herdsman
Main 1.1 – Cresswell & Herdsman
Main 1.2 – Cresswell & Herdsman
Main 1.3 – Cresswell & Herdsman
Main 1.4 – Cresswell & Herdsman (note this becomes a no drop ride)
Transition – Trans Mosman

Don’t forget your Xmas bling! See you at the Awards.

Please note, the development group currently runs 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month.

Ride Routes 7 – 13th December

Hi all,

We’ve had a great start to the summer crit season with the RCCC Twilight Series underway and another Peel crit this weekend. Not to mention West Coast Masters. SPR members have placed in the results (photos below!) and seen some “nearly podium” action (first across the line but … *wince*). There is lots of racing to come, so get in touch if you’re interested.

If you have not already, please nominate and vote in our annual SPR Peoples’ Choice Award Nominations – we’re keen to receive as many votes as we can, so please get involved. The awards will be presented next Saturday after the ride. All the details below.

Quick update on the Italy Trip (see last week’s blog): Eight people have already registered their interest in the Italian Alps cycling trip 16-30th August 2025. Don’t want to miss out – register now.

See you out on the bike.

Juniors Ride — We will meet at our usual spot in Shelley (https://maps.app.goo.gl/J8s279de4uSsaCkTA) on 7/12. However, this time we will start our ride at 8am. We will ride up and down Riverton Drive for some to practice some skills and tactics.

From the Ride Coordinator —

Step Up Saturday for December is this weekend. Have a go!

It’ll be a bit windy this weekend, so remember sharing is caring! Share the ride & share the roll throughs to make the ride smooth & fun for everyone. The whole point of a roll through is to make the ride easier for the whole group. Work as a team to make this achievable and so much more enjoyable!

Don’t forget our Christmas ride is on the 14th so start planning your Christmas bike bling and outfits!

PS The new layout for marshalling in the carpark is shown below, with every group moving up to the start point.
