Bare in mind that they may have been giving a polite toot to let you know there is a car about to pass.
Of course if it was followed up with a projectile or stream of abuse as they pass then that obviously wasn’t the case. -

I understand that Toby and I appreciate the idea, but it’s a group ride, particularly Main 1 and below, we’re not racing in Belgium or Qatar with an echelon of a few trying to get away from a chasing bunch.

I guess that depends what you mean by the “right way”.
Without briefing the group before setting off so that all are on the same page will also most likely end in confusion on the ride.
