ride routes 26th, 27th & 28th jan

as we get further away from the summer solstice, the days are slowly getting shorter.  coming back from holidays, i was surprised at how dark the mornings have become.  not pitch black, but the street lights are now lit on the way to the earlybird ride.  not only is it dangerous not to have lights on your bike, but it can be expensive as well as toby found out in adelaide.  make sure you have the correct equipment for the riding conditions.  drivers don’t care if you are riding a dogma or a giant if they can’t see you (i.e. a $10 light is more important than a $6k bike)

saturday meeting point – as the foreshore will be getting prepared for the australia day celebrations, access to the coode st carpark will be limited. to accommodate those that drive to the start of the ride, we will be starting the 7:00am ride back at the angelo/coode st intersection.  now there shouldn’t be a lot of traffic around, but please be considerate of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area.  there is a map below and it shows the location of a couple of carparks in the area.  if you do drive, i recommend that you don’t leave your car there for too long after the ride as angelo st gets busy with people getting their morning coffee.

help the novice group – the novice group had 30 people turn up last week.  carol needs some extra help to make sure the group has adequate support.  it is a long weekend so you can do lots of riding the other days.  do the earlybird then sacrifice your main ride and help out the lower groups.  it would be appreciated.

rolling through – we had a few accidents last year during messy roll throughs and as such we kind of stopped doing them except on certain stretches of roads.  i am thinking that this is the wrong method and what we need is to roll through more often to get people used to it.  i am not saying that the rides should be “pressure on” from the gun, but it is possible to roll through without going hard.  just maintain a nice pace and share the load across the whole group.  this allows people to practice their skills without being under fitness pressure.  whenever a nice stretch of road presents itself.  initiate a roll through.

uci training – due to a change in the uci course for this year, we need to change where we train.  unfortunately, the new course is at rebold hill and not as accessible from our usual meeting point at the narrows.  there is also a timing issue as people need to get back at a certain time to get to work.  what i am suggesting is that we continue using the kings park circuit for the wednesday morning training ride as it is a good testing course that will make you strong.  for the actual uci course, every second saturday there will be a uci group that will head to the circuit, do a number of laps, then ride back to coffee together.  saturday usual has more time so we will be able to get more laps in before regrouping.  this will start next saturday.

kit collection – kit will be available to collect at DOME after the saturday ride.  more info here.

australia day crits – our race partner club, rccc, will be running the australia day criteriums at the tech park circuit.  races start at 7:40 with juniors and work their way through the grades till 10:00am for the “a” grade race.  we have a number of spr riders entered across all the grades, so head down to support them.  more info here.

ride routes – apologies in advance as the ride route will not be coming home with a taliwind on saturday.  with all the road closures for aussie day, we need to head away from the river and then come back in from the mounts bay road end.  the transitional group has an easy start to their route as it is straight out along coode st.  the main/fast group will need to make their way to canning hwy.  the easiest way i can see is to start up coode, then turn left into hensmen, then left onto canning hwy.  if anyone is running late make sure you meet the group along that route.

  1. What sort of pace do the hills rides head out into death valley? I’d like to venture into the hills, but not be a pain in the arse on the way out. Non-negotiable on the uphill I am afraid.

    1. pretty cruisy on the way out. about 30kph average. we head out as one big group so there’s usually a fair amount of easing up to get the group back together after traffic light splits. once up in the hils we regroup at the top of each climb. then pace varies on the way back depending on the strength of the north-easterly at the time 🙂

    2. the ride routes for the weekend are the ones posted above. if you look under the club training page and ride routes, these are just a list of all the routes that we select from. no-one will be riding out to death valley this weekend from the club.

      1. I did not realise there was a real “Death Valley” in Perth’s diverse terrain. I was just giving the hills a jokey name. As I am terrified of going uphill. Because I am fat. Gravity is my enemy.

  2. Got a mate coming along on Saturday so will be helping out with the Trannies again. Trying to help them get better at rolling through with a smooth and even tempo so when they get into the higher groups they have the skills and know what to do.

    1. Jorgy, the ride leaders of M3 and Trannies put in an awful lot more work with the riders so there is more discipline not only in rolls through, but also riding single lane when warranted and two by two instead ot six deep up Ridge Hill or Kahuna as do the longer term senior riders think it is ok to do so.

If I was a ride leader in those groups I would be offended, though I am sure that was not your intent.

  3. Regarding roll throughs, could we focus on getting them going the right way for the current wind direction? I know it’s going to confuse some of those new to the concept but it makes the effort a bit easier not having to push your nose in the wind the whole way up to the front. This might lead to less gaps forming and riders having to dive for cover, which is usually when things go awry.

    1. I guess that depends what you mean by the “right way”.
Without briefing the group before setting off so that all are on the same page will also most likely end in confusion on the ride.
Personally I’d rather see a tidy roll through in the “standard” direction before implementing this. Predictability reduces risk.

      1. the problem is chris is there is no ‘standard’ direction in which to roll through. it should always be determined by the direction of the wind. that being said, in instances of no wind, tail wind, or direct head wind, most groups will roll over from right to left. our groups included.

        1. I understand that Toby and I appreciate the idea, but it’s a group ride, particularly Main 1 and below, we’re not racing in Belgium or Qatar with an echelon of a few trying to get away from a chasing bunch.

          1. I’m obviously not making myself clear.
When I see people can’t get the fundamentals right like, accelerating when they hit the front, not backing off when they move into the slow lane, and the lack of communication in the bunch then I don’t think it matters which direction the roll through is occurring.
            I’ll leave it that.

  4. TV Stations ……….weeeeee heeeeee – that’s 3 of my favourite ride routes, all in succession without any nagging from me. I’m enjoying this new improved el presso ;0)

  5. Regarding the roll out. Hensman street has a number of “traffic calming devices” aka chicanes and speed humps, so if we go that way please be careful. The alternative is to go further down Coode St to South St, turn left up to Canning Hwy and then continue along Canning Hwy.
Mill Point Rd is being closed at 8 am so it could be option too – it will depend on whether the barriers are up on Coode St at Angelo St intersection. Some early morning reconnaisance may be in order before debrief at o seven hundred.

  6. Looks like my better half will be joining SPR for her first group ride tomorrow morning, so looks like I’ll be helping out with the novice group (after EBR)
    😉

  7. Note the TV Stations route map still shows the main / fast ride turing left into Bayview Tce in Claremont from Gugeri st – which I recommend we avoid. Bayview Terrace has been “upgraded” to a paved one lane, pedestrial first precinct, 20 km/h speed limit, one way from both north and south with all traffic diverted into St Quentin Ave in the middle.

Better to continue along Gugeri for another 250m and turn left into Stirling – the road that crosses Stirling Hwy at Chistchuch.

    1. under the narrows, City side @ 5.30am

if its your first time, check the route, find the shortcuts as you may want to use them
