short week this week, but it still feels long. maybe because it is only my second week back at work and second week back on the bike. the thursday ride was probably the longest i had done today. not in distance (i took 5 shortcuts) and not in time (we were back by 6:25. it was long because i got dropped halfway along mounts bay road (it starts at the narrows, so not that far) and was too stubborn to just wait for the main group. i kept taking shortcuts and catching back up, then getting dropped again. it really makes the ride drag out when you do it like that.
kit collection – this saturday is the last opportunity to collect your kit from Dome, the kit committee will be the between 9am and 10am. They will also have spr water bottles for cash sale, $10 for 650ml bottles and $12 for 800ml bottles. if you can’t collect your kit (new or fire sale) this saturday, email kit@southperthrouleurs.com.au to arrange collection.
uci training – due to the change in course for the uci race, we will be holding training on every alternate saturday morning. there will still be a fast and main group, but this week we will also have a uci group for those wanting to train the circuit. i will post a ride route soon, but basically, we will ride to the perry lakes circuit and start doing laps. there will be a regroup point in which we will all meet before riding back to the city and meeting the usual saturday groups for a coffee at DOME.
focus group – bring the kids along this saturday at 9:30am for the focus group ride. nice an easy along the bike path from the boatshed to the causeway and return.
girls ride – the spr girls ride is on this monday. meet under the narrows bridge at 5:30am. the ride waits for everyone and ends at atomic. speak to emma goodwin for more info.
rccc/spr criterium series – the race series continues next weekend with race 3 at technology park. a few changes to the format. firstly a ‘e’ grade for the junior riders that starts at 07:40. secondly the ‘b’ grade women will race with the ‘d’ grade men as there are too many riders in ‘c’ grade. thirdly, due to an increase in capitation from cycling wa, the entry fees have increased by $5 to $20 (or $15 for spr/rccc members). more info at our series page here.
state criterium championships – we will also be running the state criterium championships on teh 24th feb at the tech park circuit. more info on the facebook page here. i will set up page on our website soon.
ride routes – the saturday main ride will finish on riverside drive with the usual sprint to the hospital sign. unfortunately the north bound lanes along barracks st are closed so we need to access st georges terrace at a different point. we will need to turn directly after the sprint point up victoria ave and then left onto st georges terrace at the duxton.

On non-soap matters, does anyone know definitively where the new ‘Town of Cambridge’ UCI course will go? Be nice if there was some sort of fact-based announcement soon to replace the hearsay.
Yours (still) in denial.
I’ve emailed CIC Events for some clarification but haven’t received a response yet…
i have been told what the course is and it is a lot flatter than mike will like. will post a ride route for it today.
🙁 lame
Sorry Mike, can’t help you on the course details….. However, we have one large air edge club cut men’s jersey for sale for $57. It is new and surplus from the great kit sort.
If you don’t have any new SPR kit and would like to purchase this, please email kit@southperthrouleurs.com.au
If not taken already can I call dibs?
Sorry, it is sold!
Also for the Crit series is there going to be some sort of trial by fire to sort out the Grades, the D grade last weekend was Brutal; so much so that the Main 1&2 riders (in D) were struggling to keep up. It goes with out saying my porky… ness failed to keep up too. Now I could ride more, get fitter, stop eating pies, or buy lighter kit and moan on the forum….. Gah I am am my own nemesis.
Idris, are you still in town next Tuesday for the Tuesday early bird 2nd group ride?
Yes, I am although I need to actually get out of bed on time….
I am hearing you, I fly in Konday night. So am looking for motivation on the first day of break. See you there then.
The rider grading system introduced this year is intended to help ensure riders are in the most appropriate grade for their abilities and it is reviewed mid season I believe, so if there are riders in D grade riding well above D grade level they will find themselves being officially moved up a grade.
Having said that though, races are never easy, and there are guys like me who ride with Fast group and get dropped racing C grade! True story 🙂
was your bike broken? brake touching the wheel? small chainring only?
That was my first taste of bicycle racing. I don’t think it matched the race grading description. My Garmin said I did about 33km/h avg (on my own after getting dropped and red flagged). Strava data suggests those who finished averaged over 35km/h for the whole 25min.

“D Grade or Support 3
Suitable for riders who:
· ride below 100km per week training
· travel 20-30km/hr
· group riding experience only.”
so the uci map is up now and linked above. it is basically loops around bold park. what we will do is ride to perry lakes as a group, then do 3 laps around the circuit (oceanic, west coast hwy, rochdale, stephenson, perry lakes) and regroup at the northern most carpark on perry lakes before we head to coffee via oceanic. three laps gives us 50kms by the time we hit coffee. you can stay and do more if you like.
first lap easy? 🙂
nope, the commute to the circuit will be easy. three laps hard then regroup. the group will wait 5 or so minutes then head back to the coffeeshop.
I notice you still managed to get Malcolm Street into the training route…was that just for Mike?
Yeah… Just to add salt to the wound.
Please take care when turning onto Oceanic Dr and West Coast Hwy! Both are tricky corners and i’ve seen a few close calls at both.
mmm on race day that left hander on to west coast hwy on closed roads at race pace will test peoples corning skills!
I hope they sweep it properly, because it’s normally full of all sorts of crap.
There could be a midnight secret squirrel mission to chalk somenwords of encouragement on the road and sweep the beer bottles and 4x2s off the road
I often do this course solo as it is at my doorsteps and I wouldn’t call it flat, it is quite testing especially when the pace picks up.
I think leaving the car park at 7 might be a bit late because westcoast hwy gets quite busy even before then. I would suggest a 6 AM start instead to avoid the traffic.
Anyone keen for a 6 am start on Sunday?? I need to be back by 10 and am still keen for a long ride.
I’ll join you to beat some of the heat (and for the fine company).
I might see you guys there too
I’d love to be there, but the physio has banned me from riding for a week 🙁
Injured my back at cricket.
A shout out to Carol and the Novice group for helping to make Karen’s first group ride a very enjoyable one. Thanks!!
