ride routes 2nd – 8th november

good to see some green on the podium to go with that gold at last weekend’s state championships down in bunbury.  this pic shows the gold medal winners from each division in the road race, but we also had some success in the individual time trial as well.  well done to all those that took part, especially those that raced on a very hot and windy sunday.  also, don’t forget the sunday ride now starts at 6:00am sharp.

cycliq camera lights – the lights have been dispatched so we will distribute as soon as they hit my doorstep.

ToMR race team – final teams for the tomr will be announced soon.  we have 3 men’s teams and a women’s team and more importantly a team of awesome volunteers.

ToMR Breakaway 2019 – There’s more to ToMR than just racing ToMR!!! ToMR are hosting their “Breakaway” rides – get to ride the full race courses ahead of the race in a fully supported group.
Last year, that group was headed up by none other than Jens Voigt – who else would you get to lead a Breakaway if Thomas De Gendt isn’t available? If there is suitable demand from non-racing SPR members, we can look towards packaging an accommodation bundle to travel with the SPR ToMR-ers. If you like bikes and riding it is one of the best weekends away all year.  For more info on the Breakaway rides, check out the ToMR event websiteEmail if you are interested or chat to Steve or Greg after Saturday Main rides at Dome.

The Beverley – a couple of recaps from the beverley race the other weekend.  a race report from kate bonner and a race overview from mo von moinstein.  check them out so you know what you missed out on this year and hopefully inspire you to get on board for next year.

sunday start locations – as numbers increase over summer, we are looking at how we can manage the groups on a sunday morning.  as such we are implementing a start location system to give us an idea of how big the groups are.  we can then split them before they leave the carpark to ensure that the groups are a safe size on the road.  see the previous blog post about where to meet and the new start time.

saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning.  please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate.  this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts.  see the previous post for more details.

spr juniors – juniors, juniors, juniors. the weather is looking good so get the kids out and onto the bikes.  we had 5 with us last week including a first-timer who climbed 3 hills in kings park.

from the ride coordinator – A reasonably practical one from me this week reinforcing to everyone the change in start time for this week’s Sunday Hills ride to 6am, as posted by El Prez earlier in the week. Note also the intent to split both short and long hills groups to cater for different speed/capability (if there are sufficient numbers to allow).

things do not always go to plan and bike rides/races can often be the worst example of things not going right.  one minute you are riding along in a peloton and next minute you are not even on your bike.  there are many in the club that have experienced something similar, but i am pleased to say that most have got back on the bike and out riding with groups again.  it is what we learn during the process that is important.  what we learn about the incident an what we learn about ourselves when faced with adversity.  what i find most learn is just how valuable bike helmets are when you need them most.

ride leader program – We are now seeking expressions of interest from SPR members who regularly ride with the Main 2, 3 & 4 as well as Transition groups. We currently have a good number of riders from the Main 1 cohort; we really need to boost our numbers further down the line.  please see the previous post for more info.

weekend racing – here is what is on offer this weekend if you want to pin a number on.

  • state championships at bunbury

cycliq camera lights – we have a hit the required amount of orders to get our discount.  we will finalise payment and hopefully get them out next week.

ToMR race team – final teams for the tomr will be announced soon.  we have 3 men’s teams and a women’s team and more importantly a team of awesome volunteers.

from the ride coordinator – So – last week’s howling easterly sure played havoc with some of the groups. Conditions like that are always a good test for group riding. Last week at the coffee shop I had a chat with a few people to suggest “best ride ever coming home with the breeze”. But I also got “worse ride ever, group fractured into many groups”. Got me thinking about this group riding stuff and how everybody  is seeking a different challenge in their Saturday rides including “riding the legs off your fellow riders” to “silky smooth roll throughs” with the group working well together. I know which one I prefer. I have a feeling I know which one which brings out the most compliments for the club. Perhaps those who want to ride for themselves could test themselves with an extra stint on the front into the wind, or there is always a step up to the next group as a good way to test yourself. From a ride leaders point of view, we are just trying to maximise the enjoyment for the majority and get everyone back in one piece. On both counts, it’s definitely harder if we are strung out in dribs and drabs and small groups that are tricky for cars to continually pass. Yes – those howling winds sure can challenge the way you think about group riding !

the biggest weekend for the club, from an external perspective, was held at beverley last weekend.  this is where we as a club present to the other clubs our ability to organise and run a road race.  this is no mean feat and the work behind and in front of the scenes was immense from a small group of volunteers.  these people deserve a huge thanks from everyone as we had an incident free event that the club can be proud of.  also a huge thanks to those racing as earlier in the week, we were contemplating cancelling the race this year.  numbers have been low in a lot of races around perth and it was looking like it was not going to be viable.  driving in a support car on the day, i was pleased to see so many spr jerseys out there, so thanks again for supporting the event.

ride leader program – We are now seeking expressions of interest from SPR members who regularly ride with the Main 2, 3 & 4 as well as Transition groups. We currently have a good number of riders from the Main 1 cohort; we really need to boost our numbers further down the line.  please see the previous post for more info.

weekend racing – here is what is on offer this weekend if you want to pin a number on.

cycliq camera lights – we have a bit of a club deal running with cycliq where if we purchase a certain amount of fly6 or fly12 camera lights we get a 20%, 25% or even 30% discount.  we have added the lights to the shop and we now over over 10 orders.  I will close off the order at the end of this weekend and then send it through to cycliq.  if you want a camera light, then get in fast.  more information and a link to the shop is on the previous post.

ToMR race team – as per yesterday’s blog post there is a call out for some reserves. Please get in contact with race@spr if you are interested.

ToMR Breakaway 2019 – There’s more to ToMR than just racing ToMR!!! ToMR are hosting their “Breakaway” rides – get to ride the full race courses ahead of the race in a fully supported group.

The Beverley – Last weekend was The Beverley Heroic weekend, including The Beverley Classic Race. There were some cracking rides and results from SPR members and beyond. Stay tuned for a Race Report from Fastest Female, Kate Bonner, and the usual ramblings from The Mo. Standby for the action!

spr juniors – BACK THIS WEEK.  the weather has been awesome lately and school holidays are finished so no better time to get the kids out and active.

from the ride coordinator – Just when we thought the cold mornings were finished for the calendar year, I found myself having to pull out the fingered gloves and arm warmers again this week as overnight temps dropped back to single figures. Fear not though fellow riders we have some warmer weather forecast for our rides this weekend with the return of the winds from the east. With Benara road scheduled up this weekend, once you turn the corner from West Swan road, enjoy the sweet ride home !

a very busy weekend ahead for our club and as such we may be a little short of ride leaders for saturday.  please be aware that as stated in our etiquette guide, safety is the number one priority.  this is both your safety and the safety of others.  one of the main causes of accidents is when people react to something and brake or swerve suddenly.  one of the reasons for this is not knowing when the group is turning or even going straight at intersections. please be aware of the ride route beforehand especially any of the turns that you need to take.  there may not be a ride leader in your group, so don’t just rely on others to yell instructions.  the last thing you want to have happen on a saturday ride is being responsible for bringing other riders down due to riding erratically.

entertainment book – once again we are selling the entertainment book as a fundraiser for the club.  available as a digital version, you can carry it anywhere on your phone to make sure that you never miss out on those discounts.  if you do want a physical book, these are still available but you must select a postage option.  click here to order your new book.  there are usually different weekly offers on when you buy your entertainment book.

ride leader program – We are now seeking expressions of interest from SPR members who regularly ride with the Main 2, 3 & 4 as well as Transition groups. We currently have a good number of riders from the Main 1 cohort; we really need to boost our numbers further down the line.  please see the previous post for more info.

ToMR Breakaway 2019 – There’s more to ToMR than just racing ToMR!!! ToMR are hosting their “Breakaway” rides – get to ride the full race courses ahead of the race in a fully supported group.

spr juniors – CANCELLED but coming back in 1 week.  we are aiming to start juniors again on the 19th october.  the weather has been awesome lately and school holidays will be finished so no better time to get the kids out and active.

from the ride coordinator – As a club, there is not a bigger weekend across the year than the one ahead. On and off the track there will be plenty of green white and black being represented in Beverley. It’s a great event and as members we should be delighted that we continue to support metro and regional cycling events in WA. Good luck to all SPR riders who are participating this weekend. For those that are volunteering this weekend, we wouldn’t have an event without you so a big thanks. But don’t worry, for those that can’t make it up to Beverley this weekend, we are also running our main and transitional rides in Perth. Whatever way you participate this weekend, get out there and enjoy and be proud of our great cycling club that goes close to offering something for just about everybody.

an absolutely awesome and awe inspiring race by honorary spr member annemiek van vleuten.  reports have said that even she was saying to herself that it was a stupid move to make….at the time.  on her own for over 100kms with a group of very strong riders trying to chase her down.  they got within 40 sec of her, before they self destructed and she pushed it back out to over 2 min.  overall a experience that the commentators said would probably never be seen the likes of again.  its interesting that even with a story like this, there is still a discussion about women’s sport being “not as interesting” and therefore not attracting sponsors.  it certainly looked interesting to me.

entertainment book – once again we are selling the entertainment book as a fundraiser for the club.  available as a digital version, you can carry it anywhere on your phone to make sure that you never miss out on those discounts.  if you do want a physical book, these are still available but you must select a postage option.  click here to order your new book.  there are usually different weekly offers on when you buy your entertainment book.

weekend racing – here is what is on offer this weekend if you want to pin a number on.

  • DIRT

the beverley volunteers – as we have for the last few years, we are running the beverley race as part of the heroic weekend.  curently we have 15 voluteers signed up but we need closer to 28.  outstanding positions are Rego Desk; Marshaling; Lead Cars x4; SAG Wagon x1.  if you can help out, please email race@southperthrouleurs.com.au to sign up.

the beverley race – if you aren’t going to volunteer, then sign up for the race.  for those not familiar with how a handicap race is run, the strongest riders start last (scratch) with everyone else getting a increasing better time advantage.  this means that (if the handicappers get it right), everyone has the same chance of winning the event.  to enter go to the following link as the entryboss page has just been launched.  be heroic.

cycliq camera lights – we have a bit of a club deal running with cycliq where if we purchase a certain amount of fly6 or fly12 camera lights we get a 20%, 25% or even 30% discount.  we have added the lights to the shop and will reassess orders in a couple of weeks.  if you want more information and a link to the shop, check out the previous post.

from the ride coordinator – Well if the recent UCI world championships in Yorkshire weren’t enough to inspire you to get out there and ride then you are a very hard person to please. Unbelievable effort from our very own (well we will lay claim to her anyway, even it it is a long bow) Annemiek van Vleuten with a break 100ks out is truly amazing. Adding to that was a great effort by the Dane Mads Pederson in atrocious conditions to take the win. Two very different races but both inspirational. Cycling, you gotta love it, so enjoy your own ride this weekend.

there is only one race that we run each year and it is now only a few weeks away.  the beverley heroic road race is steeped history and we are proud to continue the tradition albeit in a much different format than in the past.   due to the increase in traffic around the greater perth area, the modern beverely is just an out and back handicap race. the original was a much harsher event heading from beverley through york and northam before finishing in perth.  as a handicap race allows riders of all abilities to race together, make sure you get your entry in soon.  if not, then we are always looking for more volunteers to help the race run smoothly.

entertainment book – once again we are selling the entertainment book as a fundraiser for the club.  available as a digital version, you can carry it anywhere on your phone to make sure that you never miss out on those discounts.  if you do want a physical book, these are still available but you must select a postage option.  click here to order your new book.  there are usually different weekly offers on when you buy your entertainment book.

from the ride coordinator – With better weather we are now experiencing comes more participation as we all wake from our winter hibernation. More participation generally means bigger group sizes which highlights the need to focus on safety. Some simple precautions like knowing the ride routes, being prepared to call up and down the line, not half wheeling etc can make your riding more safe and more pleasurable for you and the group you are riding with. Above all, with larger group sizes, please listen to the guide and ride briefing from your ride leader who’s experience is there to help you get to the coffee shop and enjoy the ride along the way.

yes it may have been cold, but it hasn’t been that cold.  while i have missed the cold change that perth has endured this week by strategically being in sunny queensland, further south some members have been climbing mountains in search of snow.  not really something that we see a lot of in perth, but then again we don’t really see any mountains either.

entertainment book – once again we are selling the entertainment book as a fundraiser for the club.  available as a digital version, you can carry it anywhere on your phone to make sure that you never miss out on those discounts.  if you do want a physical book, these are still available but you must select a postage option.  click here to order your new book.  there are usually different weekly offers on when you buy your entertainment book.

ride leader program – We are now seeking expressions of interest from SPR members who regularly ride with the Main 2, 3 & 4 as well as Transition groups. We currently have a good number of riders from the Main 1 cohort; we really need to boost our numbers further down the line.  please see the previous post for more info.

weekend racing – here is what is on offer this weekend if you want to pin a number on.

  • The Element Round 3 – Lancelin – 22nd September 2019 – Cost $tba – entries close 17th Sep 19 – See details here

the beverley volunteers – as we have for the last few years, we are running the beverley race as part of the heroic weekend.  curently we have 15 voluteers signed up but we need closer to 28.  outstanding positions are Rego Desk; Marshaling; Lead Cars x4; SAG Wagon x1.  if you can help out, please email race@southperthrouleurs.com.au to sign up.

the beverley race – if you aren’t going to volunteer, then sign up for the race.  for those not familiar with how a handicap race is run, the strongest riders start last (scratch) with everyone else getting a increasing better time advantage.  this means that (if the handicappers get it right), everyone has the same chance of winning the event.  to enter go to the following link as the entryboss page has just been launched.  be heroic.

For more info on the Breakaway rides, check out the ToMR event websiteEmail if you are interested or chat to Steve or Greg after Saturday Main rides at Dome.

saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning.  please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate.  this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts.  see the previous post for more details.

spr juniors – CANCELLED but coming back soon.  hopefully we will all be back on deck after the school holidays.  there may be a few test rides over the next few weeks, but official kick off will not be that far away.

from the ride coordinator – its heating up next week but should be pleasant enough over the weekend to get a few good rides in.  we may be a little short of ride leaders for the fast 2 ride, so please listen to the more experienced riders and make sure that everyone knows the ride route to avoid confusion….and crashes.

you may have seen the report during the week of cyclists being asked to keep quiet while riding through dalkieth. my view on this is that it is up to all road users to be respectful to residents in the areas they are passing through.  whether this is cyclists holding a loud conversation, the harley rider revving their engine at 2 in the morning or a wrx driver trying to get sideways through a residential area full of kids.  as riders, we do use verbal commands to keep each other safe.  this is still the priority, and no-one is being asked to whisper “car back”.  but as a lot of our riding is done early morning, be equally respectful to the residents as you would want them to be of you.

the wonderful thing about cycling is how the club can bring together people from different backgrounds, ages, cultures, etc.  what is equally wonderful is how the common link of cycling can continue to bring people together even when they live in different countries.  in this case the quartet enjoying the sunshine atop the col de la madeleine, a lazy 2000m above sea level.

from the ride coordinator – Well we got our wish for this weekend. Finally there is no rain on the forecast for both days. BUT I hear you say, “Why does it have to be so cold !” in the mornings. With 3 degrees forecast for both mornings, we’ll have to don as many layers (& possibly more) just to keep warm. All I can suggest is that if you can drag yourself out of bed, layer up and get going, within 5kms it will be all worth while. You can always do an extra turn out the front to really warm up if you want to. Anyway, enjoy the ride(s) this weekend because soon enough, we will be complaining it’s too hot.

there are some classic places that cyclist seem to congregate to.  the arenberg forrest in the paris-roubaix, the stelvio, alpe d’huez.  the common thread with these places is usually suffering for cyclists.  heroes are made or destroyed when the riding gets tough as it shows what the riders mental fortitude is.  another classic is l’erocia in tuscany.  this is a heroic ride where all competitors must ride a vintage bike across unsealed white dirt roads.  to make it more accessible, there are a number of different length rides, but the classic is over 200kms and close to 4000m of climbing which most people take about 15 hours to complete.  if you like to suffer, this one is for you.

entertainment book – once again we are selling the entertainment book as a fundraiser for the club.  available as a digital version, you can carry it anywhere on your phone to make sure that you never miss out on those discounts.  if you do want a physical book, these are still available but you must select a postage option.  click here to order your new book.  there are usually different weekly offers on when you buy your entertainment book.

weekend racing – here is what is on offer this weekend if you want to pin a number on.

  • West Coast Masters: 1st September 2019 – Dog Hill (Flat Course)

uwct world champs – this weekend we have 2 members that we know about racing in poland for the masters world champs.  good luck to tim hopkins and graham begg who will be flying the aussie colours on sunday.  numbers are showing that this event may not be as popular as italy last year, but it is still a big achievement to qualify and compete at this level.  good luck boys.

the beverley volunteers – as we have for the last few years, we are running the beverley race as part of the heroic weekend.  it is a handicap event which means that anyone has a chance of bring home the bacon.  however, running an event like this take a lot of volunteers.  we need your time to help register people, drive support cars, assist in timing, etc.  if you can help out, please contact the race email and let us know what you can do.  if you are riding in the heroic or cyclocross, maybe you can volunteer the previous day for the race.

khanh maccarthy fundraiser – one of our members, khanh maccarthy suffered a heart attack while out jogging a few weeks ago.  although he is making steady progress, he is still in hospital and as you can imagine this is a very emotional and stressful time for his family.  a family friend has setup a gofundme to give them a little support as he recovers.  some of you may have ridden with him in the past, so please support this cause.

cornering study – a sports science honours student is running a study into ‘how biomechanics of the upper limb affects cornering performance in road cycling’. as such he is looking for adult road cyclists’ (18+ female and male) who ride 3 or more times in a typical week. they will use a range of sensors that will allow them to measure your muscle activity and movement patterns while you’re cornering.  no internal temperature devices are necessary for this study.  if you are interested in how your body reacts to the forces involved with cornering, contact william at his curtin email.

memberships new changes – if you are a member of another club and want to change to spr then it is simply a matter of calling up  cycling australia memberships and giving them your membership number.  i have requested that an additional fee is not required and most people don’t care what club is written on their card as long as they are in the right club in the system. it should be a zero fee transaction and if they ask for anything, tell them to contact the club.

from the ride coordinator – Quote of the week for all you dads out there celebrating Father’s Day this weekend:
