ride routes 24th – 30th august

being a local champion in your field is pretty good.  being state champion is even better.  being national masters champion is awesome.  that championship being in cx; a sport that involves hand-ups of beer; makes you even more awesome.  spr member vanessa johnson is now the masters 5 national champion for cyclocross after a chilly and technical race over in vicoria.  check out her race report under the racing tab or via this link.

entertainment book – once again we are selling the entertainment book as a fundraiser for the club.  available as a digital version, you can carry it anywhere on your phone to make sure that you never miss out on those discounts.  if you do want a physical book, these are still available but you must select a postage option.  click here to order your new book.  there are usually different weekly offers on when you buy your entertainment book.

weekend racing – here is what is on offer this weekend if you want to pin a number on.

SPR ToMR 2019 –ToMR EOI’s are closed and details and costs are being finalised.
If you are still interested but didn’t register, see the Race@SPR crew this Saturday. Be quick or be ready for next year!

ToMR Breakaway 2019 – There’s more to ToMR than just racing ToMR!!! ToMR are hosting their “Breakaway” rides – get to ride the full race courses ahead of the race in a fully supported group.
Last year, that group was headed up by none other than Jens Voigt – who else would you get to lead a Breakaway if Thomas De Gendt isn’t available? If there is suitable demand from non-racing SPR members, we can look towards packaging an accommodation bundle to travel with the SPR ToMR-ers. If you like bikes and riding it is one of the best weekends away all year.  For more info on the Breakaway rides, check out the ToMR event websiteEmail if you are interested or chat to Steve or Greg after Saturday Main rides at Dome.

khanh maccarthy fundraiser – one of our members, khanh maccarthy suffered a heart attack while out jogging a few weeks ago.  although he is making steady progress, he is still in hospital and as you can imagine this is a very emotional and stressful time for his family.  a family friend has setup a gofundme to give them a little support as he recovers.  some of you may have ridden with him in the past, so please support this cause.

cornering study – a sports science honours student is running a study into ‘how biomechanics of the upper limb affects cornering performance in road cycling’. as such he is looking for adult road cyclists’ (18+ female and male) who ride 3 or more times in a typical week. they will use a range of sensors that will allow them to measure your muscle activity and movement patterns while you’re cornering.  no internal temperature devices are necessary for this study.  if you are interested in how your body reacts to the forces involved with cornering, contact william at his curtin email.

memberships new changes – if you are a member of another club and want to change to spr then it is simply a matter of calling up  cycling australia memberships and giving them your membership number.  i have requested that an additional fee is not required and most people don’t care what club is written on their card as long as they are in the right club in the system. it should be a zero fee transaction and if they ask for anything, tell them to contact the club.

saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning.  please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate.  this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts.  see the previous post for more details.

spr juniors – CANCELLED.  a bit of a discussion with the other parents and we have decided to put the juniors ride on hold over winter.  the last few weeks have been too wet and the prediction is for more rain on saturday.  even if it is not wet, then 2 deg in kings park is not pleasant and we want to make sure that the kids are actually having fun.  we will reassess mid august as to when to start up again.

from the ride coordinator –So, the last of the big European cycling events starts this weekend the Vuelta a Espana. I like this race for a couple of reasons, it’s the last chance of the Euro cycling season for the GC contenders to strut their stuff on the big stage. I also like it because what follows over here is longer days and warmer weather for us to enjoy our own cycling. But for now, we have just a few more cold mornings to navigate before we get there. Starting with a belter of 3 degrees this Saturday.

we lost a member last week.  not due to changing clubs, or not renewing but because they passed away.  it wasn’t from an accident or anything sinister but he is gone nevertheless.  this was not a member that many of our current riders would have known or would have even ridden with, but was still someone that made a very large and sustained impact on cycling in perth.  henk vogels snr was born in the netherlands but represented australia at the 1964 tokyo olympics.  from there he went on to be a national level commissaire, national selector, coach, and manager of many wa state and national teams.  i first met henk when we began to float the idea of forming a club over 10 years ago.  at the time he was the president of the southern districts cycle club (sdcc) which had a long and rich history and was one of the driving forces behind the very active racing scene.  sdcc ran the state champs and a number of other important events through the calendar.  unfortunately internal politics meant that the southern districts club folded not long after we formed so henk moved his membership across to our club.  our club’s beginning was not smooth sailing as quite a few of the other clubs were not happy with us forming a new entity.  they felt that we would be stealing members from their clubs and made it quite hard for us to get established.  fortunately there were a few shining lights within the conflict and henk was always extremely supportive even offering to partner with us to run events. his extensive library of cycling stories and advice will be sorely missed but his impact on perth cycling will long be remembered.

from the ride coordinator – Days are getting longer, I know because the bird song is getting earlier when I’m in bed not riding and when I am riding one of the clubs weekly training rides, I’m now starting to contemplate pulling over for one of our cracking sunrise photos.  For this weekend main ride If it’s not too wet then we’ll all be enjoying the rising sun but if it is wet then birdsong as an alternative isn’t half bad. Spare a thought for those in the FWRC, they don’t get either choices ! Enjoy

the forlorn figure of nick finch at some cafe in blankensee in north-eastern germany just reminds us that it is not winter everywhere.  although the forecast for this week is looking pretty damn good.  no rain and low to mid 20’s….probably the same as the north german summer.  actually, i just looked up the weather in blankensee and it is 23 deg just after lunch.  we really shouldn’t complain.  at least we don’t need snow chain on our bikes in winter.

from the ride coordinator – Question for the week: Who would leave their house in their car not quite sure of where they are going ? Perhaps for some there is a thrill in that but it’s definitely not good if your intending to ride one of the clubs training rides. Just rocking up to a ride and giving someone else the responsibility for your own personal safety doesn’t seem like a smart thing to do. We’ve had some recent examples of near misses on the main rides where people have been confused about the direction of where they are going and almost caused an accident. But with a little bit of prep tonight, tomorrow or even on Saturday morning, you can reduce the risk (for you and others) by simply familiarising yourself with this weeks ride routes. After all, many ride for the coffee at the end. Be sure you don’t miss it.

so i have mentioned a number of time before about the imaginary “rules” of cycling also known as the “velominati”.  ex-pro rider phil gaimon has also taken exception to the fact that some people use these rules to belittle or exclude others.  even as an actual pro rider, people were telling him how to look pro.  so below are his new rules for cycling.  with the exception of rule #7 where in australia it is a little different due to laws, i pretty much agree with his list, especially #3.

The New Rules of Cycling: AKA Philuminati

Rule #1: Everyone riding a bike and being safe and having fun is doing it right.
Rule #2: Wear whatever the hell you want.
Rule #3: Nothing on your bike has to match. Cycling is already expensive, complicated, elitist, and often sexist and racist. Don’t make it harder because someone’s tires aren’t the same brand.
Rule #4: A Gran Fondo is as competitive as you want it to be, but the group ride is a workout, not a race. You should have no feelings about winning, not winning, who crossed the imaginary line first for no prize or how they did it.
Rule #5: In traffic, we take the space we need, obey the laws that make sense for us, and try to be courteous. Pedestrians have right of way. If you want cars to respect cyclists, cyclists have to respect people on foot.
Rule #6: We all wave to each other. This includes triathletes, commuters, e-bikes, homeless people, and scooters. We’re in this together. The enemy is car culture.
Rule #7: If you’re not into helmets that’s your decision, but do respect the policies of who you’re riding with. We don’t helmet shame (adult) strangers we see without them, but don’t show up on the group ride like that if that’s not how everyone else does it.
Rule #8: Strava is a social media platform, not a race. Follow Strava’s policies, express yourself with your cool bike rides and your pictures and fitness. If you lose a KOM, you remember that a KOM means nothing. You give Kudos and get inspired to improve and try to take it back.
Rule #9: For f_cks sake don’t litter. I can’t believe I have to say that.
Rule #10: Suffering is a choice–not a rule. You’re no more of a cyclist than someone else because you go faster or they stay home when it’s raining.
Rule #11 (This is broad to cover anything I’m missing): Don’t be a dick.

from the ride coordinator – How exciting was this year’s Tour De France ! It had a bit of everything. From the local hero bolting to the front, eventually being reeled in by one of the young guns of the sport. Then of course there was the intervention from Mother Nature herself to curb the ambitions of many. Does this remind you of our Thursday or Saturday rides ? Looks like we may squeeze our Main Ride this weekend before another weather event hits. But you can almost guarantee it wont be as dramatic as last week in France.

sometimes when facing a storm you need to look for the silver lining….or at least the natural refraction of light into it’s colourful spectrum.  for me this past couple of weeks it has been a renewed motivation for riding my bike.  strangely enough this has come on the back of the most interesting tour de france in years.  the lack of clear winner, let alone team leader has made this one of the most open since the inception of the skynet team of robots.  however, late nights and early mornings mean that something has to suffer.  and suffer i have after being dropped just past the uni on this mornings ride.

ToMR Breakaway 2019 – BUT WAIT – THERE’S MORE TO ToMR!!! There are other options at ToMR aside form racing. ToMR are running their “Breakaway” rides. What are they? The Breakaway rides basically ride the full race courses ahead of the race in a fully supported group. Last year, that group was headed up by none other than Jens Voigt – I mean, who else would you get to lead a Breakaway? memberships new changes – if you are a member of another club and want to change to spr then it is simply a matter of calling up  cycling australia memberships and giving them your membership number.  i have requested that an additional fee is not required and most people don’t care what club is written on their card as long as they are in the right club in the system. it should be a zero fee transaction and if they ask for anything, tell them to contact the club.

saturday start locations – we have revamped the group start locations on saturday morning.  please have a look at the map so you know where your group will congregate.  this makes it easier for ride leaders to give you a briefing before the ride starts.  see the previous post for more details.

spr juniors – CANCELLED.  a bit of a discussion with the other parents and we have decided to put the juniors ride on hold over winter.  the last few weeks have been too wet and the prediction is for more rain on saturday.  even if it is not wet, then 2 deg in kings park is not pleasant and we want to make sure that the kids are actually having fun.  we will reassess mid august as to when to start up again.

from the ride coordinator –the current forecast says that it should stop raining before the saturday morning ride.  i don’t know which one i am wishing for most, the no rain or the $110m powerball tonight…..that is a lie.  $110m will get a really good zwift setup.

even though the tour de france is probably taking up valuable sleeping time in a lot of our members, there is another very important race going on at the same time.  the women’s giro is also in full swing and some of our members just happened to be over there when our honorary spr member annemiek van vleuten smashed the rest of the competition for the stage win and jumped into the overall lead.  annemiek then went on to win the next stage, an uphill time trial.

sacrifice.  i have talked about it on here before especially in relation to someone helping me to qualify for the masters champs.  however, it can also happen as part of the mundane, day-to-day.  last saturday the fast group was hammering along abernathy road when they came across 2 large lumps.  all was called and there were no accidents like we had on south street previously.  however, realising that there were numerous groups about to thunder down the same stretch of road, pete seizovic decided to sacrifice his own ride and peel off the group to remove the obstacles before the main 1 groups happened upon it.  at work we are often asked whether we would walk past a safety hazard because it is “not our problem”. the fast group successfully negotiated the hazard, but by removing it altogether, pete reduced the risk for the following groups.  safety is one of the cornerstones of the club.  make sure you are looking out for your clubmates.

tour of margs expression of interest – SPR ToMR 2019 Expressions of Interest are closing this Saturday, 6th July at TWO MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT! ToMR this year celebrates it’s 10th birthday. Nice work Brendon, Bec and Co! The Tour this year also sees a return to FOUR stages over three days.  At this point is time, it appears we may only barely be able to field 3 teams in total. Quite a departure from the 6-7 teams from days of yore. Or even just last year.  Most importantly, WE NEED MORE WOMEN!!!! While the ToMR Crew are coming to town for an Info Session in August (as advertised on FB) but we’d really like your EOI now! from the ride coordinator –With Le Tour commencing this weekend, we needed to get in sync with the professionals by putting in some elevation into the Saturday ride. By doing this, I am hoping that all those flat trackers out there can appreciate a little of what is about to begin in France. Didn’t say that you have to like it, just appreciate it. Enjoy !

riding in the rain is nothing new to this club.  this photo was from almost 10 years ago and even with unpleasant conditions, people still turned up for a ride.  not as many places to hide and most likely to finish the ride with a sand beard, but it is winter after all.  looks like there will be a window of opportunity this saturday, so get out and turn the pedals without having to clean the bike afterwards.

tour of margs expression of interest – well it is on again and spr will be sending teams to compete in the biggest team cycling event in wa.  the tour of margaret is a multi-stage teams based race centred around the down south town of nannup.  there so many reasons why this is such a cool race to be part of and there are lots of links within the previous post.  if you want to be part of it, make sure you contact the club via the email address in the previous post.  expressions of interest close soon as we need to commit the number of teams and entry fee to the tour organisers.  if you are planning on doing this event, or are needing an incentive to train more, put your name down now.

from the ride coordinator – With the wettest June in 14 years and third wettest on record looming, it’s been difficult to consistently get on the bike across the month and this weekend the poor weather looks to continue. Hopefully we get a break in the rain long enough to have a dry ride on Saturday but I’m through trying to predict if we will or not. For those brave souls who are planning either of the hills rides on the weekend, please take note that Welshpool Rd between the end of Kewdale Rd and the Leach highway is scheduled (finally)for the completion of resurfacing along that stretch, so there may be some diversions in place to send you on some local streets, just when the end of the ride is in sign (Doh!). But who knows, even the weather might impact on this as well.

FOMO.  fear of missing out.  last saturday during the earlybird the heavens opened and we got totally drenched.  this was definitely not an example of FOMO as i am sure all of you that were on zwift didn’t miss much.  what you did miss was FOMA or Foam Out My Arse, well not mine in particular.  this phenomenon occurs when a pair of knicks is either not rinsed well enough or too much detergent has been used.  once the chamois has been totally saturated, the oscillating compression of the butt on the seat causes the excess soap to form bubbles.  lots and lots of small bubbles create a foam monster which flys off and attacks unsuspecting riders following behind.  while riding in the wet is tricky enough, having to avoid butt foam ads a new dimension to why we ride.

spr club championships – with only 100 members expressing interest in a club champs, we have decided to not run it this year.  hiring the venue and providing a safe environment with st john on site means that we would be looking at about a $5000 loss. i still think that the idea has merit and so the committee will investigate it further in the future.

from the ride coordinator –So the choice of this week’s ride is often one of the most talked about ride routes that we have. It even has its own nick name of “Spewin’ Ewen “. The view from the bottom of the Ewen Street Street hill in Doubleview can strike fear into even the best rider, however the cruise down the other side towards Scarborough is a ripper. It reminds me of a quote from Ernest Hemingway “It is by riding a bicycle, that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them”. The only question that remains is why do the contours have to be so steep in this part of our country ?
