saturday 5th june – scarborough beach rd

with a nice downpour just 30 minutes prior to our normal kick off time, i expected that a few people may have decided to stay in bed instead. we had close to 20 or so riders which is a nice manageable number especially if the roads are wet. i didn’t get any rain on me on the way to the start, but brett was coming from the other direction, and got hammered as he came through belmont. i did check the radar before i left home and i was pretty sure that we would not get hit with any other storms.

the route today was an old favorite with scarborough beach rd being the main focal point. we would head steadily around mounts bay rd and up around kings park via thomas rd. this would eventually bolt onto scarborough beach rd where we would step up the pace a bit. home via west coast hwy and dalkeith would also add another two fast sections.

we rolled out at a nice easy pace and found our way past the coffee shop and onto mounts bay rd. i got to talk to a new guy, kim, who is a friend of ryan’s and who also won a copy of the tour de france guide with his haiku entry. good to see some new riders coming out, especially when the weather is not that pleasant.

as we headed up thomas rd and the constant climb that it contains, i noticed lisa was struggling a bit and was falling off the back. i was already dropping back to see how the field was doing, so i fell in along side her. she had been to the track on friday night and was now feeling the effects of that session. she told me to go ahead, but i thought that we should be right and would catch up with the main field. unfortunately we caught almost every light along thomas and loftus and would only just get them in sight, before we got caught again. just as we hit scarborough beach rd, michael had slowed up to give a hand.

john also appeared out of nowhere and jumped on to give a hand. we basically had michael and john on the front and me pushing lisa when she started to struggle. again, we almost caught the field a number of times but would always get stymied by the traffic lights. when we hit the rolling hills section that the main field would have stepped up the pace, lisa told us to go ahead, as she was not coping well. i would not normally do that, but she said that she lived close by and new the area and any shortcuts.

we accelerated and tried to catch the other guys before the hit west coast hwy. michael fell off the back as we put the pace on so john and i took turns along all the rolling hills that make up that stretch of road. at the coffee shop, some of the guys did comment on how deceptively hilly that section of road was and how you think that you have finished all the hills, when one more appears.

we regrouped on west coast hwy and set off with a stiff breeze coming across our right shoulder off the ocean. again a nice steady pace along the highway until we past oceanic drive. i had said in the morning briefing that once we past that point, we could go hard again, until we hit the swanbourne shops. we were held up at the lights, so i reminded everyone that it would be on again, and as soon as the lights changed we were off. john and nick took off from the gun and managed to gap the field a bit. i was sitting mid pack and was letting the group stretch out a bit before deciding what i would do. a few gaps opened up as people’s abilities were stretched so i came around and began to chase down nick.

a quick look around and i noticed a number of riders hanging off my slipstream as i time trialed up the road. i caught nick and came around him to chase down john. my shadows fell off once i caught nick as they all fell into step behind him. i caught john and came past him too but he quickly jumped on behind. we started to do turns to try to keep away from everyone but stu managed to bridge the gap too.

the three of us worked together for a while, but we were caught by christophe and nick before the end. it was a good hit out though, and i was pleased of my performance after a couple of bad saturday morning rides. another regroup before we headed off again for the final hit out through dalkeith.

as we approached the lights at the stirling hwy intersection, we had a small split and the lights allowed about 6 or so riders through. i expected them to wait for us, but instead, they took advantage of the situation to try to keep away from us. darren did quite a bit of work on the front before ben and i started swapping off turns to try to pull the break back. we had almost caught them by the time we hit the sharp left hander onto jutland pde, but i started to fade and let the rest of the field go.

i managed to grab a couple of wheels and got a bit of a rest before the small rises that usually sort things out. i came off johns wheel and powered up the climb so that i could just keep the front guys in sight. we rolled down past steve’s pub and the majority of the group were back together by the time we reached mounts bay rd.

it started to line out early as the pace was on with the tailwind. michael and i noticed that graeme brown was unfortunately heading the other way on mounts bay rd. he would have been able to give ryan a run for his money being a protour sprinter and all.

anyway, i was sitting towards the back and thought i better move up when i saw a gap open up ahead of carl. this positioned me closer to the front, but still behind ryan and some others. there was some moves and next thing i know i am sitting second wheel behind nick who was burying himself on the front again. he started to fade after a long turn on the front, so i came around him but decided not to go full pace. i wanted to leave something in reserve and not long after, john sprinted past with ben on his wheel. i jumped up and managed to hold the wheel, but then john ran out of puff so i had to switch to ben. ryan came flashing past, and ben and i both tried to up the pack but to no avail. we both sat back down and watched ryan take line honors by a long stretch.

a nice stop for coffee and we managed to get in before the main storm front came through. we gave out our haiku prizes to the deserving winners and i also managed to drum up a bit more business for the tour de france tipping contest. so a good ride today with lots of hard and fast sections to test the legs. lisa did manage to make it to the coffee shop but she said it took a lot of self control as she past by her house and thought about turning off early. lorraine met us for coffee and to deliver the prizes and some coffee bean orders from the hardcore coffee crew. it will be good to see her back on the bike soon.

saturday 28th june – cresswell & herdsman

rain, rain go away. wait till i have stopped riding… you bastard. i know it doesn’t rhyme, but i don’t care. i wanted a nice ride today. and despite the rain it was quite a good ride. only a handful of hardcore riders braved the elements and it was not raining when we left the carpark. probably 15 riders all up, but we had to wait a bit longer for some to arrive.

it was another new route today, but really just an old one that we hadn’t done for a while. similar to the tv stations ride, this would take us out grand prome but turn off before morley dr. another small detour and we would come up past the yokine golf course before heading over for a lap of herdsman lake. back down to dalkeith and the usual sprint home.

the roads were wet from the previous showers and i was glad to be at the front as you didn’t get as much spray in your face. we took it easy out great eastern and over the river at ascot. a few more showers made it interesting but not too bad for me as i had my bright orange rain jacket on. a few close calls at the lights with wet brakes made it tricky, and we probably went through a couple we shouldn’t have, to avoid a mass pile-up instead.

the cresswell hill adjacent to the yokine golf course used to be a favourite of vicki and her wednesday morning hell sessions. it is a stepped climb which means you can set intervals at each point in the climb. i.e. hard, harder, spew. today i was taking it easy as i have come down with a head cold and am supposed to be racing a cyclo-sportif event tomorrow. i made sure ryan knew were to regroup and then let them loose on the hill. not unexpectedly, ryan was first to the top with jerry (who is claiming to be sick) not far behind.

a slight change to the route as we went straight out to flinders to do a right hand onto royal. next time i will stick to the original as i think it would cause less problems. we took it easy along royal and main streets but the pace began to pick up once we started out lap of herdsman. similar to last week i had not picked a spot to go hard as i couldn’t quite remember the route. however, this stretch around herdsman is ideal as it is double lane and a good road surface the whole way around. there are a number of traffic lights but this can be both good and bad as it may slow the breakaways or hinder the chasers. this time we stayed together the whole way, but is was getting a bit rough towards the end for some of the weaker riders.

we turned onto shelby st and took it easy as we headed towards shenton park. a slight diversion due to road works but we were still headed in the right direction and turned done past the claremont hotel. once we hit the familiar territory of victoria ave, the boys started to pace it up a bit. a couple of extras caught up to our group and suddenly everyone wanted to show how strong they were. ryan managed to smash them up the small rises on birdwood parade to show who was boss and we all scampered after him on the decent.

by the time we hit mounts bay rd the “extras” had turned off onto the bike track even though they were heading in the same direction. we started single file pretty early and nick was on the front pushing a hard pace from the outset. after a while i came past him to do a long turn as no-one else was keen to play. i still had no sprint, so my job is to be domestique and just ride hard and consistant. nick eventually came back past me and went off the front hard. i couldn’t hold his wheel so i gave a flick of the arm to let the next person through. there was a hesitation which allowed nick a bit more space and i thought he may get away. we were not that far from the finish, so he may have had enough of a break. pretty soon, everyone came crashing past me and mowed nick down in their path. ryan held off jerry again for the line honors, and i past a completely spent nick as both we limped our way to the coffee shop.
the rain had stopped by now and it was looking to be a beautiful day. a quick hot chocolate and a bit of discussion about the new kit and launch breakfast coming up and i was on my way. the bike now filthy and no real time to clean it properly before the race tomorrow, i will have to hope the quick wipe and lube keeps the chain going. there should still be a ride tomorrow, for those that aren’t racing, and i have mapped out the kahuna for you… cause i won’t be there.

the picture is of darrens wet weather bike. even though he has the record for the lightest bike, he rides this 11kg monster, with full mudguards, when the rain sets in. i think his light bike will dissolve if it gets wet.

saturday 21st june – sth lake

today is the winter solstice, which, for those that remember some of the things they taught us at primary school, it the shortest day of the year. it was also probably the coldest start we have had as well. at 7:00 it was officially 3.4 deg in perth city. by 7:30 it was 3.3 deg but luckily an hour and a half later when we hit the coffee shop it was 12.6 deg. almost summer. hopefully, as the days get longer the less you will hear me whinge about the lack of daylight until daylight savings kicks in again.

so, due to the cold start and the short day, i was expecting a less than impressive turn out. to my surprise we had close to forty roll in all kitted up in whatever winter gear they could find. we were doing a new route today and it would be a learning experience. i will apologise now for the stretch along armadale rd as it was a bit busy and will be excised from the route in future. we intended to head down canning hwy and onto north lake rd till it hit armadale rd. we would then return via nicholson rd and albany hwy. as we had never used this route before, i was unsure about which spots to let the boys loose, so i picked a familiar spot were this route and the banister rd route combine. at least people should know where they were headed by then.

the majority of the ride was pretty sedate as it was a reconnaissance. north lake rd had a couple of rolling hills that tested the back markers a bit, but all in all the roads were good all the way down to beeliar drive. i was splitting my time between making sure the guys on the front knew where they were going to making sure some of our weaker riders were keeping up at the back. i felt like a bit of a sheep dog, roaming the edge of the flock, trying to keep it in check. ryan was also doing an admirable job helping lisa along when the going got tough. michael had one of our first mechanicals, with a flat tyre, but he waved me on when i was going to stop.

we turned onto armadale rd and lost our nice clear double lane. suddenly we were in a 90 zone of single lane traffic that was in a hurry to go do stuff and things. we battled on but i was hanging out for the left turn that would take us away from all of it. nick commented after we turned that we should have been single file as he saw a number of cars pass very, very close to the outside rider. it doesn’t matter now as the route will be changed.

swinging onto nicholson rd we were soon into nicer quieter roads that skirted suburbia. as we past livingston marketplace, where sharon has her optical shop, i was chatting to ryan about places to make the fast stretch, and this seemed ideal. nice smooth roads and double lane. next time we will know better. as this road came to an end, dr melvyn had our second mechanical with a suspected flat tyre.

as nicholson turned left and continued over roe hwy, it was on for a few km’s before we connected back with albany hwy. a few of the guys took advantage of the fact that ryan was on the back and took off hard to try to keep away. i was somewhere in the middle and struggling to hold pace let alone bridge across. rob came around to help, which was good for a while, but then i was fading fast and couldn’t hold his wheel. ryan came flying past about then and bridged across to the leaders but didn’t go past them as he was content at that. i managed to limp in, and with the benefit of a set of traffic lights, i kept in contact.

we slowed the pace down at albany hwy to allow the group to reform as we had spread out quite a bit by then. the next fast section was only just down the road and would take us back into town and to a well deserved coffee stop.

as albany hwy merged into shepperton rd, the pace was on again. the rolling hills make this last stretch interesting as do the traffic lights, as both can potentially allow a rider to get away for a solo bid. this time, however, the lights allowed the group to reform a couple of times as we all got caught. james took off after one set, but i was content to play the spoiler today and just pull back any breaks that went. everyone was itching to go, but no-one wanted to commit until ryan jumped at the base of a small rolling hill. as i was on the front, i managed to semi-stick with him. i was there, but not exactly on his wheel, but far enough from the rest of the group to say that it was a breakaway. unfortunately, when my body said enough, this left me in no-mans land and was pick up by the rest of the riders as we came down the hill into the causeway.

this is where is started to get messy.

a couple of the boys began to slide along side the cars at the lights like motorbikes do when you are stuck in traffic. this is fine for them, but on the bicycle, they are going to have to negotiate around us again, which puts us in a potentially unsafe situation. about three riders crept around while the rest of us waited behind the line of cars. this gave those guys a decent advantage when the lights changed and we were struggling to catch them.

ryan bolted out of our group and easily bridged across to them. chris hit the front of our group and tried to bring them back all by himself. knowing that i had no top end speed for a sprint, i rolled around to the front to try to time trial the group up to the leaders. it didn’t last long and by the time we had crossed the causeway, i was spent and peeled off to the side.

no idea how the ride finished, though i can make a good guess, as i limped in minutes afterwards. not a good sign for a big hills ride tomorrow.

no coffee stop for me as it is bens 2nd birthday today and we were having a party. i did manage to catch up with lorraine, who was there with her wrist still in a cast, to talk about a potential bike kit launch breakfast. i will keep you informed as it comes closer.

i am running a tour tipping comp again this year and will have that up and running soon too. same format as last year, where you must pick a new rider everyday, but not the same rider between rest days. confused??? don’t worry, i will post the rules on a separate blog soon.

saturday 14th june – benara rd

as saturday rolled around, the predicted ne winds did not appear and we had calm conditions instead. usually this would be better, but i was banking on a nice tailwind on benara rd to give us a push. with the predicted clear 23 degrees meaning very little overnight cloud cover, the temp had dropped to about 6 deg by the time i rolled out from home.

the usual suspects were there this morning minus ryan who we expected had slept in again, but would probably join us as we rolled by his house. we headed out great eastern hwy and crossed the river at ascot, turning onto guilford rd. the group took it really easy this morning and it made a good change from the last time we did this route. there were some hot-heads which split the group up early when they got a draft from behind a truck. this made for a very splintered and dangerous trip through guilford. no truck this time so everyone was together by the time we hit benara. everyone except dr paul and dr greg who turned off early for a shortcut.

i was sitting at the back of the pack with ryan when the pace came on. not ideal positioning, but the road is long and i was sure that there would be wheels to catch to propel me forward. after the second round-about, i had made my way to the front and launched a nice attack where i managed to gap the field significantly. i had a really good group ride on thursday and thought that my form was up and ready to play. unfortunately, this was saturday and i found i had no legs. i pushed on trying to will some more power out of my body, but i was going slower and slower. the bunch lead by nick reeled me back in and back was the direction i was going. everyone who was in that group managed to get past me as i was struggling to hold the pace.

i managed a bit of recovery before finding my way to about mid-pack again. at the two main sets of lights that stopped us, it was strange to hear that not a word was spoken. maybe i wasn’t the only one feeling it today. as we came through the last roundabout and started the final stretch, i attacked again. this time i didn’t get as far before ryan came screaming around me like i was standing still. i tried to hold out as long as possible but soon the rest of the pack engulfed me. i managed to hold on and limp to the end of benara rd.

we slowed it right down for the next section to allow any stragglers to catch back up and also allow us a bit of a breather. as we headed towards whatley crescent, the pace picked up a bit as the guys saw dr paul and dr greg up the road a bit. this forced the group to “line-out” and i was stuck at the back talking to shao as we approached the intersection. bad positioning again, and i was sure that we would miss the lights altogether, but managed to scrape through on the amber.

a handful of boys had attacked straight away and managed to get a bit of a break. i sprinted around the main group and headed into no-mans land. wary of my previous two efforts i tried not to max out, and aimed for a steady pace to try to reel them back in. i past dr paul just as the lights changed which stopped the rest of the pack. i was seriously screwed now. the guys were up the road in front of me, and the ones behind were now stuck at the lights. i decided to keep plugging away, and hoped that i could make up the ground.

a group of five or so should have been able to keep away from me on my own, but there weren’t really sharing the work load. it took a few km’s but i finally managed to grab a wheel. it turned out to be dr greg who had latched on as the train went past. rob had been doing the majority of the work with a turn from christophe, but then rob was soon back in front again. he was frustrated and so kept going through the lights at guilford rd when the rest of us stopped. not a yellow card, or a red card, but a serious black card as the lights were very red.

i got on the front as the lights changed and time trialed my way along east parade with the other five in tow. it turns out that the other group then got every single red light on whatley cres and was never in sight of catching us. we caught and past rob and kept the pace on over the police station hill as usual. with only a handful available for the final sprint, i decided to lead it out as i felt i had no top end speed. with james on my wheel i wound it up along riverside drive until about halfway. gasping for air, i signaled for james to make his move, but he said he had nothing. ryan and jerry came flying past and that was the end of the sprint for me. ryan managed to dodge the sloooow car that i was catching and held on to the end.

the rest of the crew rolled in a few minutes later, all grumbling about the lights on whatley cres. by then the day had seriously fined up and so we really shouldn’t have had anything to complain about. coffee and a big breakfast for some offered a nice end to the ride. the shorter distance on this one also meant that we had longer to chat at the coffee shop too.

i have been playing with some new routes for both the saturday and sunday rides that i hope to unleash on the group soon. variety helps keep it interesting.

saturday 7th june – ridgehill rd

cold, dark, throw in some more cold. welcome to winter. dry though. if it was wet it would have been a horrid day. we are expecting some showers during the week but they are always predicting that. i think we had close to 30 on the roll out and almost everyone had their winter longs on. melvyn and i headed the pack as we took off up mill point rd towards the great eastern hwy. today’s route would see us do a figure eight as we headed out to helena valley and over ridge hill rd before crossing our path and heading home through guilford.

after a while brett and jerry came to the front to ease the load for melvyn and myself. melvyn commented on the fact that guys just don’t look good in tights. i thought it may be like that beer ad where the guys cover their beer to stop it going flat when the two guys in lycra roller-blade past. that’s right, don’t drink beer while riding in lycra. the un-manliness of it will make it go flat.

we had a very cruisy start to the ride and the journey out great eastern and into south guilford gave everyone an opportunity to catch up and have a chat. no-one was going hard as i think everyone was saving it for the hill. as we crossed the railway tracks dr wally seemed to be having a bit of trouble. it seems his handle bars slipped and so dr paul slowed down to help him. there is a bit of a trend amongst the older doctors at the moment. they all seemed to have ritchey breakaway bikes. there are four (carl, greg, paul, wally) that have these swish titanium folding frame bikes that you can easily pack into a standard size suitcase. great for bike for traveling, if you do a bit of it.

so, paul and wally slowed down, but i knew that they knew the shortcut for the day and i was sure that they would be using it. we pressed on. as the group snaked it’s way towards the base of ridge hill rd, i flitted between talking to those at the back that may be struggling, to keeping an eye on the boys at the front to make sure they were being nice. i rolled around to the front just before the start of the climb to make sure i wasn’t boxed in when it started.

the ridge hill climb is nothing compared to the normal sunday rides, but we don’t often do any climbs on saturday, so it is always interesting to see how the group will react. i was on the front leading into the climb and started at a steady pace whilst watching behind myself in case anyone (ryan) put in a big attack. nothing was happening and the pack was staying well together, so i thought i better start to thin things out a bit. i upped the pace and watched john p fall back through the pack. jerry came with me and rob sprinted around to keep up. it started to string out a bit by the time we were on the first plateau.

just as it kicked up again, i came past jerry to try to set the pace higher. i thought i was doing a good job until ryan came past at pace and i’m sure he was in the big chain ring too. i tried to hold on to his wheel, but to no avail. i set my own pace, but used him as a guide to try not to lose too much more ground. i managed to gap jerry slightly on the next plateau, but by the time we had past the old quarry, i was starting to fade fast. mr dickhead was driving a green barina (or something) today and managed to come past us without much breathing space between. unfortunately the camera was facing the sun (as it was for most of the ride) and so i didn’t get his number plate.

as the road gently headed up for the final time, stu came flying out of the chase pack and past jerry and me. i tried to jump on but had nothing. the legs didn’t want to play nad jerry came past me at the end too.

down the other side and we had a regroup before heading along kalamunda road. the trip through high wycombe and back to guilford was taken at a moderate pace as the windy road can be dangerous if the group is all strung out when people are attacking. mr dickhead had changed cars now and was driving a 4 wheel drive that started to come around us just as we hit the bridge into guilford. no where to go he started to squeeze the cyclists off the road.

as we enter bassendean, the road extends to two lanes all the way back to the coffee shop and so the guys were given their head of steam. there were no attacks initially, but the group started to roll through to pull the pace up into the 40+ km/h.

unfortunately when we hit the undulation section of guilford rd, i was on the front and was very wary of any attacks going off the front. on the second hill, hamish and bruce did the bolt and gapped the field a bit. i had decided that i still needed to prove something to myself after and aborted kalgoorlie race and wanted to hurt myself and anyone else that dared to follow today. i chased the attack down, but it was bruce’s last as he turned down garrett rd, just as we caught them. ryan had jumped across with me and not the three of us had a slight gap over the field. chris and another guy had managed to bridge across so ryan and i swapped off turns to keep the pace high. unfortunately we came close to getting every single traffic light, so the pack regrouped a number of times.

i stayed at the front as much as i could and pushed the pace and my heart rate into the +180’s for the majority of guilford rd. by the time we turned onto east parade, i had wanted to spew at least twice and had dropped back a bit. the group eased a bit on east pde so i took the opportunity to try to time trial off the front and managed to get away for quite a while until ryan chased me down. i tried to stay with him, but had pretty much spent everything by then. the rest of the pack engulfed me as we crossed over the graham farmer.

i took it easy up the plain st hill and it turned out to be my undoing. the group was split into two packs at the lights and i was in the second one. we hit every light after that and never caught the front boys again. so not sure who even got up for the sprint. if i had to guess, i would say, ryan was first and jerry the eternal second.

no ride for me tomorrow, but the group should be heading out as normal. i will bring the young lad along for coffee in kalamunda and try to time it right to meet the group during the ride. then it is down to wandi to watch the 100km state title. i bought a wee-ride (kids bike seat) today from glenn parker south and so will do a lap or two (the opposite way so i don’t get in the way) while the race is on progress. show him what bike riding is all about.

Saturday 31st May – Reverse Canning

ride report by robreally warm this morning – no boot covers or leg warmers (sounds awfully 80’s!). About 25 in the group this morning and with our fearless leader heading over to kalgoorlie to try his luck in the menzies classic, chris called the route….”and when can we go fast?” comes the well known south african call from the back…bannister road and shepperton road…just like ‘normal’!! ‘that’ll be my ‘breakaway point’ nick reminds us.

we head off up coode street and round on to canning highway. everyone appears to be in good spirits as the rain looked like it was going to hold off. we get down to north lake road (which has been the usual left hander for this route in the past) and the pack seemed to almost lead itself! not this time though – on to stock road. as we came round the final turn on canning the reminder that there is a reasonable climb before stock road looms large in front of us. feeling good this morning i thought i’d give it a bit and see who came with me. nick was on the front and seemed to slow just before the incline started so i went round…must have been a ‘mechanical’ something or other?? half way up i was still feeling good but could hear some heavy breathing just behind me. give it a bit more to see what happens…3/4 of the way up and i’m thinking i might even hold them off before….ryan flew past…again…then chris…then nick…then…doh! regroup at the top of the climb and round on to stock road.

an easy cruise along stock road to south street. after the climb i was content to sit back in the pack and have a bit of a rest. rounding on to south street we rolled down the first drop and then prepared for the first of several rolling hills. the guys on the front started to pick up the pace a bit with about 4 getting a bit of break on the group. i decided to go up and play and the pace stayed quite high…until chris came past and spoiled all our fun…(just kidding mate) – we’d dropped a couple off the back from the first climb, so as is our group’s philosophy, keep it together for the most part and play on the flats, we pulled back and sorted out a re-group.

the rest of south street was an easy cruise although by the time bannister road came up i suspected that i may have stayed out the front for just a little too much of the ride. this might challenge to hang on. just as we rolled up to the turn i was about to step on the gas and a car rounds from the right hand land and straight in front of us – those of us on the front throw the anchors out with the familiar ‘SLOWING’ call…but i think that given the close call on this one there where a few other words included in the call that may not warrant reporting! with most of the wind taken out of our sails and also being in the big ring, it was a grind to get back up to speed. that also meant a bit of cat and mouse started to see who was going to go first. not long before melvin takes the initiative and flies past with one other on his wheel. a couple more of us stand up and start to chase them down. then its on. legs start spinning and hearts start pumping. a bit of a gentlemanly roll through starts but it’s at pretty high speed. soon it comes down to every rider for themselves and the grimacing looks forward commence, pleading for the road to end. ryan takes off the front and pushes his wheel hanger hard. this doesn’t last long and he’s off by himself leaving us all to mop up the scraps.

rounding on to nicholson road the front group slows down for a well earned breather and the standard regroup. we head back up to roe highway and i turned around to see mike b at the back, most unusal to see him there, but understandable. will be good to have him back up to top gear when everything gets sorted. once we’re all on we get back up to cruising speed with nick on the front starting his usual push. the call goes out to start a roll through which everyone seems happy to oblige – nice stretch of road along to albany highway and then up along to shepparton road. paul comments to me that the bannister road stretch was ok this time, but the rolling hills on shepparton road may test. yep!

as we round on to shepparton road, the usual suspects start to step it up. chris comes past and i jump on his wheel. as he moved across to the left i don’t know why, but i thought it might be fun to push off the front as hard as i could. felt pretty good too for about 2 or 3 hundred meters. then it hurt. i was coming up to the lights and praying for them to go orange because i really needed the rest now. no such luck. nick, melvin, chris, gerrard, ryan, paul….bugger it…push now or you’re off the back! managed to stay on and got a much needed respite behind the group. clearly making breaks on the pack is not my strong point…might stick to the hills i think. the rest of shepparton road was fast but the front pack stayed in touch. everyone appeared to be getting ready for the riverside drive sprint.

lights at the causeway slowed us up coming off the downhill on shep road so we all got a standing start. just as we come up on to the first bridge, melvin decides to take the lead and puts in a spurt off the front. i’m sure i heard chris say ‘leave him out there’…but i could be wrong?? the rest of us hang back and the group is pretty bunched up as we come around on to riverside drive. chris is coaching the guys around him…”wait til the lights; wait til the lights”…we all oblige and by this time melvin’s back with the rest of us. as we get to victoria avenue lights the call goes out and we’re off. nick pushes off the front with chris on his wheel. i try to hang on with the knowledge that there’s a big group behind me. nick pulls left and chris goes round. ryan flies past and a couple of others try to hang on. ‘car right!!’ we hear from the back and gerrard goes past, legs flying. as i looked up front it appeared that ryan won the sprint, but not by too much…the rest of us sit up and start sucking in the oxygen.

as we rounded into the coffee shop there’s a whole bunch of chatter about gerrard’s sprint – apparently the “car right” call was directed at him mainly, given that he figured the left hand land was full and there was a perfectly good bit of road just the other side of that little white line with a nice clear run to the front. i’m still not not sure that he managed to get up to the 70km/h he said he was doing…but who am i to say…? there was a radar set up on the side of the riverside drive as well. ryan said he had to brake because he didn’t want to get fined….mmmmm??

lorraine was at the coffee shop sporting her new look (the hair AND the plaster cast). bit bored she says, so much so that she’s started to make homemade marmalade…so we can all expect some lovely darlington preserves coming our way next week…lorraine??

thanks gerrard too…the details of that operation you performed (a fractured ‘what was it again’?). the information to us blokes about how to avoid a similar outcome ourselves is most helpful!

and yes, i got to actually stop in and have coffee this week – she who must be obeyed and those 2 kids she keeps insisting are mine are all over east at the moment…ahhh the simple things in life!

saturday 24th may – tv stations

well back to blogging again. it has been a while and it will probably take me a while to get back into the grove. however, what i would like to do is get a few more people involved and give them access to blog at will. all this means is that you have to register as a user on blogger and then i can authourise you to blog on this page. i will still post the ride routes and my view on the rides, but this will allow other opinions and views on the world of cycling. so, register yourself and drop me an e-mail to let me know. i want to set the blog up as a south perth ride site rather than my site.

so, after months of bitching about the dark early mornings due to day light savings, i can now bitch about it being dark as we are only a week away from winter. well, it was dark this morning, and i had to strap the lights on to get to the start. the threat of rain kept a few away, but we still had about 30 or so turn up. the tv stations was the route and it would take us north to nollamura and back down wannaroo rd before taking a diversion around kings park and the karrakata cemetery.

it was an easy roll out down mill point road and we got the opportunity to wave to the old bikeforce group as they headed the opposite direction. or more importantly, see who was still riding with them. their choice. we rolled quite easily all the way up great eastern and across ascot to the north side of the river. the group stayed together well until the end of grand prom, where we did a quick left/right turn to get onto dianella dr. this is a slight hill that takes us up to yirragan dr which contains some nice fast sections before hitting waneroo rd.

well the pace went on as soon as the front boys realized that everyone made it through the lights unscathed. i let myself drift towards the back of the group as i was racing on sunday and didn’t need to put too much into my legs. lisa was hanging on at the back so i fell back to help her up the hill. mike b was also at the back so we formed a protective draft around her to help her back to the group. meanwhile, a number of attacks had gone off the front along yirragan dr, with the usual suspects trying to shake it up. unfortunately the “hamstring injury” that ryan has, did not stop him from going hard off the front and forcing everyone to chase.

mike and i looked after lisa until we got to the regroup point on wanneroo rd where the group had found a nice bus-stop to park in. an easy cruise down onto charles st and across to thomas rd to take us around the back of kings park. mike then told me that he would not be racing on sunday as his previous medical condition had started acting up again, and that was the reason he was hanging at the back of the pack. hope he gets it sorted out, as he is a demon on the hills when he is in form.

about half-way down past kings park, we turned off to head around the back of the hospitals and cemetery to lengthen the ride a bit. this also allowed us to come home the usual way through dalkeith where the boys could give it another go. unfortunately, just as we came through the claremont shops, it started to rain. we had been pretty lucky up till then, but maybe pushed it a bit staying out so long. didn’t change the ride much as we were already on the home straight.

the usual attacks happened around the back of dalkeith, but i stayed out of it again, content to get towed along. by the time we “regrouped” at mounts bay rd, the rain had stopped, but the roads were now sufficiently wet enough to make it uncomfortable.

as we headed towards the coffee-shop, everyone was trying to get into the right hand file to get ready for the sprint. i got sick of getting a face full of water from the bike in front, so started to time-trial ahead of the group. i wasn’t going hard, but managed to gap them a bit and force them to chase. i let them catch me before they wound up for the sprint and got back into the right hand file. as we past the old swan brewery and the pace started to pick up, i checked my back and jumped across into the right hand lane.

this has two main benefits.
1. it cuts the corner.
2. it is harder for the guys in front to get on your wheel.

i started the sprint and got a good jump on the guys. so much for saving my legs for sunday’s race. i saw that ryan had also started his sprint, but he was a few bike lengths behind me, so i was hoping i had enough to keep him off. unfortuntately he took me before the line, but i managed to hold on to second. a sign for sunday maybe.

no coffee stop for me today as i had a mountain of things to organize for both my birthday and the state championships, the next day.

however, i heard the news later that lorraine had a bingle less than 50m after leaving the coffee shop and had broken her wrist. hope you get well soon and back on the bike. in the meantime, it will have to be on the home trainer like stuart o’grady and brad mcgee, so you are in good company.

saturday 3rd may – riseley & south

quite chilly again this morning, but i knew it would warm up so i didn’t add to many extra clothes to the mix. an extra pair of over-gloves to keep the wind chill down and the booty covers and i was away. a very small turn out this morning and i wasn’t really sure why. the weather was one thing, but it was forecast to be nice. the busso half ironman was on, but i didn’t think we had that many hardcore triathletes in the mix. so just to be paranoid, i put it down to the current e-mail war that was going on. if you haven’t been involved, don’t worry, it will all go away very soon, but it involved my new probikekit ad banner and supporting local bike shops. apparently a conflict of interest.

so we rolled out this morning with about 20 people, and headed down canning hwy. the route would take us past garden city, and murdoch before hitting south st and down to freo. the usual way home via dalkieth was the plan. it was a very subdued group as we headed south. the banter was still about the e-mail war as there were a lot of people getting there opinions out there. we took it easy up riseley st and across leach onto murdoch dr. south st was the aim and i would give the group their head of steam once we hit it.

this stretch of south st contained a number of rolling hills to test the legs, but can also be let down by the number of traffic lights that you really have to luck to get a clean run. the group started to stretch out a bit as some of the boys hit the front and began to up the pace. i intended to sit on the back all day today to rest my legs for the race tomorrow, but went to the front with the primary aim of getting a bit of video footage as the group came around me. i ended up doing a bit of a turn and was surprised how tight my quads felt. not a particularly good sign.

once some of the others like nick, steve and rod came to the front, i wasn’t playing anymore and just cruised along in the group. a couple of the boys got a bit of a gap and the group began to splinter as people tried to chase. luckily the lights at north lake rd found us all back together before the boys did it all over again.

we regrouped on stock rd and the lights meant that the group was all back together. i dropped to the back and had a chat with a new guy that had turned up. apparently, he had damaged some bit of his hip or something playing footy and wanted to keep active so was out playing with us. good to see, and i hope you come back out with us, dan.

we turned down marmion for the run down to freo and between here and along stirling hey, the group was remarkably contained and basically stayed together till the turn towards dalkeith. as always, the pace was going to step up.

i left it up to the guys to work out who would be doing the work as i was still under the impression o would be saving my legs for tomorrow. as usual the pace was on, but not at an unattainable rate, probably due to ryan not being here. as the field stepped up i allowed myself to drift to the back where i found dan, hanging off the end of the group. i gave him my wheel and attempted to draft him back to the group. the combination of increased pace, me not wanting to overstress my legs and the small undulations meant that we were off the back till we hit the intersection that takes us onto hackett dve. back on the group i noticed that it wasn’t all our riders as another group had got through the intersection and was heading up the road. i guessed that the lights on mounts bay would slow them down as i don’t think we have ever got through them without having to stop. i will be caught out one day and let someone go and they will sneak through.

so we lined up on mounts bay ready for the sprint. there weren’t many willing workers, so i found my way to the front. i wasn’t pushing hard and was primarily there because i find it hard to write the blog from the back of the pack. chrostophe took off early and no-one chased. he got a bit of a gap before steve also headed off. i did not intend to lift the pace so if there was going to be a chase, it would be someone else. a couple of guys came around, but then dr melvyn decided that they escapee’s needed to be caught and made his move. he yelled at us to hop on as he came past and i jumped on his wheel. he made a good pace and got us up to overtake both riders before running out of puff. by this tiem we were at the brewery and bruce jumped from the pack with jerry hot on his wheel. from what i could see, bruce almost buggered it up but had a second kick to keep jerry at bay and into his ‘eternal second’ place.

so, a small group for coffee, served with true german efficiency (the waitress is german, and she is very efficient. service has been really good since she arrived). lots of discussion about the state of our group and what we will be doing in the future, so expect some changes soon.

racing down in collie tomorrow and i will be joined by ryan, jerry, michael and stu. ryan did the half ironman bike leg today as part of a team, so it will be interesting to see how he goes tomorrow. he has come second in the last two races he competed in, but will have to see what he has left for tomorrow. hopefully we can achieve something for the team.

saturday 26th april – benara rd

saturday morning rolled around once again and about thirty or so riders were keen to play. the course was picked to take advantage of the easterly wind, which didn’t seem to be blowing too hard at south perth. a nice easy pace out to guilford before a hard session on benara rd, a further cruise and regroup down to whatley crescent where we would go hard all the way into town. that was the plan anyway.

up great eastern hwy and out to ascot was a pleasant pace allowing us to hold a conversation and generally catch-up with the group. once we hit guilford rd the easterly wind was a lot more evident. after we past under the tonkin hwy i tried to get the group to roll through to make it easier for everyone. however, it actually had the opposite effect, as some of the more experienced guys thought that we were doing it to try to up the pace and started pushing harder. the group started to splinter and some guys couldn’t pull through for a turn. luckily we hit the lights at bassendean station and had a chance to regroup. unfortunately for john b, the stop meant that he almost ended up on the ground as he touched wheels with the guy in front and ended up riding his bike like a bucking bull trying to stay upright.

so we moved along, and gave up on the roll through and just let a couple of the stronger boys do the work. just before the bridge that separates bassendean from guilford, a couple of big slow moving trucks past us. the road was going from double to single lanes and the trucks were trying to get past before the bridge. unfortunately, chris decided to jump on the back of one and get a draft, but didn’t see the next one coming. he didn’t get run over, but the next thing we know, half the pack is now chasing to try to catch a draft. this basically spread the group along a couple of hundred metres making it difficult for traffic to get around.

it continued this way up west swan road and the nice and easy pace soon became a hard slog as riders battled the cross winds. i was stuck towards the back and was cursing the front guys for splitting the group up. i couldn’t get around to get to the front as there was a stream of traffic tryig to get around the little pockets of riders. i managed to jump up a driveway and get onto the bike path that ran alongside. it was pretty wide and in good condition so i managed to clip along at a fair pace. reaching the front pack i jumped off the curb and raced to the head of the field just as they were turning onto benara rd. our designated go hard point. as most of the group had already gone hard, i gave the guys my best gordon ramsey impersonation and a number of expletives about spltting the group up. i then made them all go easy pace to allow the rest of the pack time to catch up before we turned the pace up again.

after we past the first roundabout, i let them have their head of steam and the attacks happened soon after. nick, chris and ryan all sped off the front at some stage along benara rd and soon the pack was stretched out again. i was practicing my domestique duties and just chased down everything but didn’t attack my self. we came across dr paul and dr ian who had managed a very good short cut and were easily halfway down benara by the time we caught them. we did manage to catch most of the lights, but still thinned the group out by the time we reached the end. it is a nice long stretch but can be ruined if we don’t get a good run on the lights.

a easy pace down through morely and onto bayswater for the final run home along whatley crescent. this road contains a number of rolling hills and only a few traffic lights so you can get a good run in if you are lucky. i had discussed team tactics with chris earlier on in the week and we had decided that we would attack and wait for the others to chase. when the attack was caught, we would send another rider off the front to force them to chase again. hopefully, chris had talked to ryan, so he wouldn’t chase me down.

anyway, i went early and hard. bruce wasn’t far off my wheel so managed to jump across with me. he did one turn then turned off on garrett rd to head home early. i was on my own again as the road climbed up the next hill. a quick look over my shoulder and i saw that the group was closing fast. however, as i powered down the other side i managed to widen the gap again giving myself a nice buffer. not long after, i hit a set of red traffic lights and was brought to a standstill. my gap meant that i at least had a little time to grab a drink and get my breath back before the group descended on me.

as the lights changed, chris sped off with ryan close behind. i set off with the others but it seemed that no-one was really keen to chase. only a few had set off after them but no-one was really making much ground. i had recovered sufficiently and thought that i could give it another go and try to bridge across to them. if the rest of the pack came with me, then i would ease off, but no-one else jumped. jerry was off the front and i came around him too fast for him to get on so left him in noman’s land. by the time i hit east parade i had caught chris and ryan so tucked in behind to get a rest. a few turns between us and we still had a good gap by the time we cross the graham farmer freeway.

unfortunately the next set of lights put a stop to our shenanigans as the group caught us. dr melvyn sped past as the lights changed and charged through east perth to the hill next to the police station. the group splintered on the hill as normal but we managed to reel dr melvyn in or should i say that the hill forced him to slow down. we caught every single light between there and riverside drive which meant that the group was pretty much together for the final sprint. i had chris on my wheel and i was hoping that ryan and jerry would line up as well. we needed practice at the leadout train and this is a nice long stretch of double lane road.

nick jumped first at the light change and started to speed down the road. it was a long stretch, so i wasn’t too worried as even if i didn’t catch him, the next guy may do it. i didn’t accelerate hard as i wanted to make sure the chris stayed on my wheel. we pushed the pace and caught nick easily. james dropped in behind chris’ wheel with jerry just behind. ryan had to fight for position and come around a few bikes but was behind chris by the time i dropped them off. chris didn’t have much left after a few days off the bike due to a cold, but ryan still sped off dragging jerry along. the rest of the field was quite a way behind by then and everyone was pretty buggered after so chasing so many time today.

christophe commented on jerry being in his usual position of behind ryan’s wheel. he renamed him poulidor a french rider who always seemed to come second to the greats in the 60’s and 70’s.

so a good ride, and I felt strong which was good after a very poor showing on our thursday training ride where the guys had to wait for me a couple of times. hopefully a good sign for tomorrow’s hills ride.

saturday 19th april – rebold and cott

cold, damn cold. i had to go back in the house and get my jacket this morning, much to the disgust of my sleeping wife. i always prepare everything the night before (including pumping my tyres) so that i minimize the noise when i get up. if i creep around quietly, i can usually be out the door before anyone wakes. this morning was not my stealthiest. if i was smart enough to thoroughly check the weather report the night before (it is all about preparation) i would have noticed that it was forecast to be freaking cold overnight and i would have got the jacket out just in case. so no, not a good start.

the course today was added not long after christmas as we kind of went this way for our christmas ride. a few extra hills, some fast paced sections and a few more km’s turned it into a standard saturday ride course. today it would take us around the bottom of kings park, onto hay street through subi and over rebold hill. a quick lap around cottesloe and we would then head back the normal route through dalkeith.

despite the cold we had a decent turn up as we would have had close to 40 riders roll out. a nice and gentle trip along riverside drive and onto mounts bay road allowed the group to ease into the ride. even the climb up thomas rd was not too stressful as the group remained under control. as we rolled down hay st which becomes underwood ave, i was surprised when we hit the few rolling hills that there were no real attacks as everyone found a nice climbing pace to the top.

once we came around rebold hill, i was going to allow the group it’s head of steam up the climb and along west coast highway till we hit swanbourne. as we turned onto oceanic and started the two small climbs around rebold hill, dr nic came charging up the road from almost the back of the pack. she hit the front and kept going with nev not far behind. i was waiting to see who would react but the group looked content to let them go. i switched it up a gear or two and started setting a faster pace which the guys could get a tow behind. we picked up nev and then dr nic before the top of the hill and by the time we crested, had a group of around 7 or 8 riders. with the chase and hill over, the momentum left group and the rest of the pack caught up by the time we hit west coast highway.

the group really seemed to not want to go hard at all today, and it took a few prompts to get it to start chasing. michael and nick finally broke clear along this stretch of road before the group reacted. however, it didn’t even manage to get strung completely out as no-one seemed eager to flat out chase them down. we regrouped around the lights at swanbourne and made our way down to the southern end of cottelsoe to come back up marine parade. a few of the boys wanted to stretch their legs a bit and i was content to let myself slip to the back of the pack and take up position as last wheel. with the race set for tomorrow and my flu like symptoms forcing me to have tuesday off this last week, i was a bit dubious of my form. i had already struggled a bit on some of the climbs for today, and worried that it my be a bad sign for tomorrow.

so, the group stayed together through a relatively fast tour of cottesloe and we meandered our way past the swanbourne shops. a nice big 4wd decided that we were too slow and tried to get past only to find that he was running out of road before the intersection. he had to slow down and push back in, splitting the group in half. smart man. if he had waited ten more seconds he still would have made it to where he wanted to go.

the route took us back home through dalkeith and the group will always go hard along here. always??? not today. with team p0rn0 making other plans to see how we can control the sprint, none of us were planning to do any work on the front. this left nick and a couple of others to force the pace, and they were not keen to hurt themselves either. chris stamped off the front to try to get something going but no-one would chase and he soon grew tired of playing and was absorbed back into the pack. finally as the group approached the last few undulations on birdwood pde, the pace picked up thanks to nick, christophe and nev. the group strung out a bit but not to the extent that we have seen it smash everyone apart.

team tactics were still in play and we were trying to keep mid pack to keep us out of the work load and in position to attack. a car interrupted us on the turn onto hackett dve and the front guys got a bit of a break. i mentioned to chris that is they got a good set of lights onto mounts bay, we were done for. it would have been an unusual set of events to get that to happen, and we caught them as they sat waiting for the green.

now, the team tactics for the day was to sit in till about two km’s out and then we all go hard down the right hand lane to get a break. we would all line out and try to deliver ryan to the line in one piece. now it didn’t quite go to plan. just before we were due to go, stu got a puncture and was off the back for a quick change. when i finally did decide to go there was too much traffic and i couldn’t get into the right hand lane, so i knew that there would be some hangers on.

brendan had made a break earlier and had a bit of a gap on the field. nick was on the front chasing him down with the rest of the train strung out behind him. as i led off the front, with (hopefully) the rest of the team in tow, i knew that we were not going fast enough, or over far enough to stop anyone jumping on board. too late for second chances as we had committed to the move already. i did a turn and manged to pick up brendan from his breakaway. i flicked the arm for michael to come through and looked back to see what the move had created. half the field were attached to us and the rest were still being pulled along by nick. i hadn’t totally smashed myself as i was hoping that i could jump on board as the tail came past. as i waited for the many riders to pass by, i started to doubt that the move would pay off at all. i ended up letting them go up the road and paced myself to the coffee shop. it turned out that chris had done an extra big turn to deliver ryan to the line but with steve firmly attached to his wheel. steve wasn’t too happy with some of our tactics and was unhappy with a blocking move by chris at the end when he released ryan. oh well, not a complete failure, but we will try something different next week.

coffee stop was good, but with a notable exception. big john who works with me at rio, didn’t make it back to the shop. his wife was waiting for him (as is the tradition) but he phoned up saying the he had four flats on the way back from cottesloe. with stu hitting a pothole to puncture and dr melvyn’s brake levers coming loose (after some dyi maintenance) we were lucky that there wasn’t a stack.

i have also started to take orders for the new group jersey, as had been posted on here earlier. if you want anything (jersey, knicks, vest, armwrmers) then see me after the ride or send me an e-mail through the blog. i will finalise the order over the next couple of weeks.

race day tomorrow at wandi, so hopefully we can get a ride report from the hills ride a well.
