ride routes – 5th & 6th movember

busy, busy, busy.  this week has been busy.  first there was chogm, then the DOME opening, now the golden spokes.  it looks to be a good weekend with big numbers across all grades.  lets hope the weather grants us a reprieve as well.

golden spokes – saturday is race day.  there are about 110 riders in across all three grades in the cycling wa race with an additional 21 in juniors.  3/4 of the c grade field is from spr, so you will need to keep toby’s legacy alive to take out the win.  on top of that there are another 40 riders from the west coast masters that will also be racing on the course.  thank you to all the people that have volunteered.  lets hope the weather holds out and we have a successful day.

new coffee shop – some dude from the club has opened a DOME coffee shop in the city.  saturday will be the first time we re-route the ride finish away from the belltower.  i will put up a separate post explaining how we get there.  i hope people enjoyed the free breakfast on tuesday.

spr kit order – yes, finally, the kit orders are open.  use the links on the menu to access the online shop.  see the previous post for more information on the hot topic of kit vs memberships.  orders will remain open for another week and a half to make sure everyone gets a chance to purchase.

movember – i have been roped into this one again and we have set up a team, currently with 4 members.  we will post some more info on this soon and will be hitting you up for donations.  give that they may grow a mo.

ride routes – even with the golden spokes on, there will still be a saturday morning ride available.  there may be a need for some people to step up and act as ride leader for the day, so don’t be shy the club needs you.  all the rides will finish along mounts bay road, so getting to the new DOME is relatively easy.  continue along passed mounts bay hospital and cross mill st.  just after the first foot bridge from teh bus port, is mercantile lane on your left.  turn up it and it will bring you out at st georges terrace.  the coffee shop is just on your right at 167.  i will post a quick map tomorrow.

golden spokes – volunteers list

so the golden spokes is this saturday 5th and thank you to the number of people that have volunteered.  the day is split into 3 parts and we need volunteers to be operating during two of them.

firstly there is the juniors race.  this starts at 6:30am and contains 3 separate races.  next is the west coast masters race at 8:15am, but they supply all the labour, so we can have a rest (warm up for the race).  finally is the cycling wa race with 3 grades starting at 10:00am.

so, all of you that volunteered but said that you are racing as well, i thank you, but am sorry to say that you will need to be there about 4 hours before your race starts.

registrations opens at 6:00am so we need to be setup before that time.  those that are on setup duty will need to be there at least 1/4 hour before hand so we can set up tents and tables.

  Setup Crew – 5:45am
1 Jordan Brock
3 Jeff Jorgenson
4 Ben Madsen
5 John Gilbertson
6 Alistar Dickenson
7 Carlos D’Oliveira

at 6:00am we need to have the registration desk up and running and by 6:30am we need the lap counters set up.

  Rego & Refresh – 6:00am   Lap Counters – 6:30am
1 Alison Ramm 1 Andrew Wong
2 Amanda Nabi 2 Jen Siah
3 Andrew Ballam

during the juniors race, we are not expecting there to be much action at the refreshments desk, so the registration people can deal with that.

we also need line judges but the setup crew should be able to do that too.

  Line Judging – 7:00am
1 Jordan Brock
3 Jeff Jorgenson
4 Ben Madsen
5 John Gilbertson
6 Alistar Dickenson
7 Carlos D’Oliveira

the one job that i don’t have filled at the moment is a lead car for the under 17 race.  we need someone to drive their own car in front of the race for 8 laps.  this helps the lap counters to keep track of things.  let me know if you can help out.

we then have a break for a couple of hours while the west coast masters do their thing.  apparently they have 5 grades running at once so there should be loads of action.

at 10:00am the cycling wa races start and this is where we need the next wave of volunteers.  the registration desk and refreshments will be need to be manned by 9:15am to allow the first shift time to warm up before their race.

  Rego & Refresh – 9:15am   Lap Counters – 10:00am
1 Caris Buchanan 1 Simon Millichip
2 Meghan Thomas 2 Heiko & Suzy
3 Sarah Bolton
4 Bec O’Donnell

during the event there are also 4 vehicles involved in the race that we need to provide.  there are 3 lead cars for each of the grades and a spares vehicle for the ‘a’ grade race.  the lead vehicles help the lap counters keep track of the race and let other people know that the race is coming.  the spares vehicle needs a experienced rider in so that they can change the wheels quickly, so we have 2 people in the car.

  Lead Vehicles – 9:30am   Spares Ute – 9:30am
1 DOME (with driver) 1 Ross Ellis
2 NetPlus (Garry Abdy) 2 Johnny in the Drops
3 Nick’s Ute (Mark Hindley)

at the end of the race the most crucial roles are the line judges.  we need to give positions down to 10th place, so we need as many people involved as possible.  i have nominated 3 people, but more will be better.

  Line Judging – 11:00am
1 Mike Bonner
2 Stuart Gee
3 Dale Groves

after the race are presentations and we have a couple of people that are designated as “presentation support” to ensure that the proceeding go smoothly.

  Presentation Support – 11:30am
1 Kat Buckley
2 Zina Tchistiakova

well that is it.  the day is done, so whomever has just raced should still be around to help pack up all the equipment.

a few things that i don’t have that we may also need.

  • folding chairs.  i have 2, we need lots more than that unless you want to stand all day.
  • folding table. if anyone has a trestle table, we need one for the refreshments table.
  • any other people that i have not listed that have said that they are available, please still come down anyway to help.  we are bound to need back ups, or even people to ride shotgun in the lead cars so that the drivers don’t get bored.

the club really needs people to make this day work.  josh has done a lot to get the race organised, now we need to make it run smoothly.

spr club kit – orders are open

well after a few technical difficulties, the kit order is now open.  you can access it via the menu below the header (team kit – cannibal), via the link here or the “visit the shop” link that appears after you login.

it was interesting to see the discussion about whether membership was a prerequisite for kit ownership.  my opinion is….well my opinion doesn’t really matter.  i put up some points for both sides of the argument and some people expanded on these points quite passionately.  it’s always a worry when mrs prez decides to weigh in on a discussion but you can see that people feel strongly about it.

so, what are we going to do.  nothing.  there are valid points for both sides of the argument and i think that the club can basically set it’s own expectations without forcing people one way or another.  the general consensus is that you should be a member to wear the kit.  some people said that they would not dream of wearing it without being a member.  well now they can get both a new kit and join up as a member.

at the end of the day people want to feel like they belong to something.  this is why we have been the fastest growing and biggest club in perth (cycling australia affiliated road club).  we have given something for people to belong to and i feel that most people get something out of what we do.  so, no, we are not going to force people to join the club but we would strongly encourage people to consider it as then they can truly feel like they are part of something.

orders are taken though the site and you will need to login or register on the website before you can purchase.  once your cart is full, you will proceed to payment via paypal.  this allows you to pay buy either a credit card or your own paypal account.

this is the summer kit order and as such jackets and long sleeve jerseys are not available.  the arm warmers that are on the ordering page are summer arms only and are not the roubaix lined winter ones.  we will do a winter order in march before the cold winds start a blowin’.

DOME pre-opening – tuesday 1st nov

DOME - Westralia Plaza

amongst all the CHOGM news that has been flooding the press lately, you may have heard about another big thing to open in perth.  unfortunately, the queen will not be officially opening the new DOME cafe, but in spr world this is pretty big news.  after months of delays, and us riding around with a non-existent cafe advertised on our kit, we can say that it is so close now, you can almost smell the coffee.

wednesday 2nd nov is the big grand opening with saturday 5th being our first official ride finish at the DOME.  however, there is more to this post than just free advertising for toby.

on tuesday 1st nov between 7am – 9am, toby wants to test out the staff in a special free breakfast for any spr member.  basically, after the tuesday earlybird ride, you head up to the new DOME and get yourself fed and watered for free.  if you work in the city, feel free to head home first to get changed before making your way to the cafe.  all members have to do is present their cycling australia memberhip card that shows you are a current member of south perth cycle club and you are right to enter.

as this is to test out his staff a day before the grand opening, he would like about 50 or so people to take advantage of it.  the idea is to spread yourselves out around the entire cafe and not just all sit in a group together.  the cafe is 70m long with a mezzanine level as well, so there should be lots of spots to lounge about.

for those that don’t know, the adress is 167 st georges terrace in the shadow of the new bhp building and runs alongside the walkway down to the esplanade busport.

come along and help toby out by eating his free food and coffee.

a question of membership…

so we had this little discussion last year, but it never really amounted to anything.  before we start the kit order, i would like to kick it off again.

the question is – should the spr kit be only available to spr members???

the pros –

  • you should only be wearing a club kit if you are part of the club
  • we have more control over who is representing our club (in public and races)
  • it will force people to become members

the cons –

  • more people wearing the kit means more exposure for the club
  • the roots of our club was never forcing people to pay to ride with us
  • is it a question of how much people can afford???
  • it will force people to become members

please add your feedback to the comments below.  you are the club, let us know how this should play out.

ndcc crits

if anyone is looking at getting their sprint legs ready for the upcoming golden spokes race, then head along to the first of the northern districts summer crits.  this sunday at wangara, you will need a proper race licence to play.  for more info, click on the flyer.

ride routes 28th, 29th & 30th oct

chogm, blah.  queen, blah.  traffic chaos, blah.  no time to worry about those things.  the golden spokes is on next week so i am starting to stress about that instead.  do we have enough of this, too much of that, will people turn up, will i get enough volunteers, will the weather be crap, will zac wear an all white kit???  some things i just don’t want to think about.  maybe i need a good hard ride to clear the mind.

golden spokes – this race is next weekend on saturday.  still need more volunteers.  still need more people to enter.  some more info here.  i will confirm the volunteering positions this week and put up a blog post.  get behind the club and help us run a great event.

training sessions – as in a previous blog, there have been a few old training sessions revived lately.  spin with fynn is now monday night, wednesday uci ride has returned and thursday morning recovery ride starts directly after the fast group.  something for everyone.

spr t-shirt – we have bought more t-shirts that we need so the orders are still open.  click here for more info.

spr kit – we are sorting out some technical difficulties with getting the orders up on the website.  please do not try to order any kit if you do manage to fine a “backdoor” into our online system.  at the moment, i can’t guarantee exactly what you can order, and it is a pain to issue refunds.  keep an eye on the blog for when orders are open.

special DOME opening – keep an eye on the blog for more details.

ride routes – i have checked the road closures for chogm and we should be ok for the friday earlybird and public holiday ride as riverside drive is clear.  the friday earlybird, will be the standard earlybird ride around the river as the normal friday morning ride will not get back to coode st in time.  saturday has the big aussie bbq on so the whole cityside riverfront is in lockdown.  the earlybird should be fine, but after that we need to finish via mounts bay rd.  not sure if the belltower will be open so i guess we will play it by ear.

friday 28th oct

ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am

early lap – spr earlybird ride

ride starts at coode st carpark at 7:00am

main group – spr public holiday 59.35km (shelley & freo)

transitional – spr saturday 42.94km (freo & cott)

fast & main groups – spr saturday 49.38km (tv stations)

sunday 30th oct

ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am

early lap – spr earlybird ride

all rides start at coode st carpark at 7:00am

short – spr sunday 61.14km (welshpool & weir rd)

long – spr sunday 101.86km (welshpool & mundaring & kalamunda)

new (maybe old) training sessions

after a very brief stint of “spin with kat”, we now have “spin with fynn” back up and running instead.  the night has changed to monday, but the venue is still the same.  bring your bike, trainer and running shoes…and any bad jokes.

  • monday 6:30pm under the narrows (south perth side) for 1hr of spin and perhaps a bit of a run.

as we make our way towards the end of the year, the focus is starting to head back towards next years UCI race.  as such we are reinstating the UCI wednesday morning ride.  this will conflict with the current ciao ride at 6:00am, but will cater for a different crowd.  ciao will be flat and fast, uci will be hilly and fast.

  • wednesday 5:30am under the narrows (city side) for 3 laps of the uci course in kings park.

as seen in a previous post, there is a main group ride (recovery ride) on thursday morning starting just after the fast ride.  this ride can also pick up any dropped riders from the fast ride as it will take the same course.

  • thursday 5:30am under the narrows (city side) for a lap of the river including cottesloe.

ride routes 22nd & 23rd

having moderately recovered from the team time trial on the weekend, i am assuming that the effort had made me stronger.  maybe not so much physically, but i guess i now know how far i can push myself mentally to be able to keep going.  it is funny the many facets that there are to cycling.  besides the pure physical fitness there is the mental toughness, the social interaction, the competitiveness, the ability to get up early in the morning just to ride and the miles of lycra.  basically, i think we all probably need a bit of help with our addiction.

spr breakfast – this weekend we will finally be having a spr breakfast.  it has been some time mainly because we don’t fit in my house anymore.  so this week we will be having it on the foreshore adjacent to the coode st carpark where we start.  there will be sausages, muffins, fruit and drink available at $5 a head.  coffee will be available to purchase at the boatshed cafe next door if you need a hot drink.  there will also be a sizing kit for people to try on the new jersey style before we open up the orders.  a big thanks to the breakfast team who have organised everything (without me having to lift a finger).

golden spokes – as mentioned in a previous post, we still need volunteers on the day.  put your name in the comments and let me know what you can do.

new coffee shop – at the start of november we will be changing coffee shops after the saturday morning ride.  as many people know, toby will be opening a new establishment in the city and this is why we have had DOME plastered across the front of our kit all year.  all the ride routes will be changed to show the new finish location.  if you want to keep up with how the shop is progressing, you can join the facebook page.

ride routes – both the main and trans group rides on staurday will need to be adjusted at the end.  we will not be heading to the coffee shop after the ride, rather we will head back to coode st for the club breakfast.  the trans group will need to cross the narrows bridge after mounts bay road and head along the foreshore.  the main groups will need to get back onto coode st similar to the earlybird ride.  in actual fact, we might as well do the earlybird ride route twice.

saturday 22nd oct

ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am

early lap – spr earlybird ride

all rides start at coode st carpark at 7:00am

development group – spr saturday 35.48km (novice shelley)
