Ride Routes 16th – 22nd August

This weekend, we look to have some better weather locally, and there is several big events happening. So hopefully, whatever option is for you, I hope that you find some kms with your name one them.

First up, is the 100th Collie to Donnybrook & Return Cycling Classic Cover. I don’t have the full start list, but we have a number of members heading down to race, including the SPR van (thanks Jon!).

Secondly, the 2025 AusCycling Cyclocross National Championships are on over the weekend in Ballarat. We have Oscar Barratt, Tom Barratt, Anna Schwartz and Mel Raybould over there and racing ๐Ÿ’š – keep any eye on the official website and their Facebook page for updates.

And check back next week for results and photos.

See you out on the bike.

Daniel

Tour de Cowaramup 2025 โ€” The TdCowaramup is on again Sunday 12 October 2025; multiple distances/climbs and funds going to support local communities and charities.

Start/ finish: Juniper Estate

Organized by the Perth Integrated Events Team (PIET). Register via link below; three distances 60km (piccolo), 85km (medio) and 130km (gran) – $130 till 30th September, $155 thereafter.

We have accommodation for three nights at the Leeuwin Apartments as per last year, cost $110 pp; in Friday 10th October out Monday 13th October, shorter stay if preferred for the same price. The price increase follows a recent review by the provider after many years with no price increases.

Please contact Carol or Danielle via comdev@southperthrouleurs.com.au for further queries.

Juniors Ride โ€” Weather looks great on Saturday. However, to take advantage of the warm hours let’s meet at 11.00am.

The plan is to ride this route: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/392000717

We will meet under Mt Henry bridge (https://maps.app.goo.gl/LMeTUSjQ71uhrx5i6) near Kerbside Cafe. The ride has a quite tough but short climb in Bicton. There is the option to take the easy way for those who are not up to the challenge.

Beginners are recommended to turn back after we have ridden the first 5 kms when we will have reached Heathcote Reserve.

It is now the time to prepare for the Road State Championship on 30/8 (https://entryboss.cc/races/26314). It is important that the kids could practice a little bit during the week with the parents to get more confidence. During the weekends we will practice some race tactics as much as we can. I really hope we will have a good participation in the event with all the juniors we can. Please make an effort to commit and compete, it is going to be fun and we will have a good chance for several medals!

From the Ride Coordinator โ€” At SPR, we encourage all riders to familiarise themselves with the planned route before joining a group ride. Not knowing the next turn can increase the risk of accidents โ€” for you and others in the group.

Juniors Ride โ€” I am finally back from my holiday in Italy. My intention was to resume the junior rides this weekend. However, the weather forecast looks quite unfavourable.ย

I would suggest giving an eye to our whatsapp group as I might organise a last minute ride by checking the last minute forecast. According to what I can see now a Sunday afternoon ride could be an option. If this is going to be the case, we could meet around 2pm at our usual spot in Shelley. I will confirm on Whatsapp. For the moment no ride is scheduled due to adverse weather conditions for the weekend.

The CX season culminated last weekend with the State Championship where we had excellent results with Riley and Paige winning their age category and Oscar coming 2nd on his. Well done to all of you !

It is now the time to prepare for the Road State Championship on 30/8 (https://entryboss.cc/races/26314). It is important that the kids could practice a little bit during the week with the parents to get more confidence. During the weekends we will practice some race tactics as much as we can. From the Ride Coordinator โ€” Managing the roll-through in a group ride is everyoneโ€™s responsibility. Be aware of the wind direction, so that the correct side of the group is protected, i.e. the right line โ€œanti-clockwise rollโ€ moves forward when the wind is coming from the left. The direction is reversed if the wind is coming from the right. Call out โ€œlast wheelโ€ to the rider behind you when itโ€™s your turn to move forward. Move across when you get to the front of the group and avoid sprinting off creating a gap at the front of the group.

The group should aim for a pace that allows the maximum participation in the group roll-through.

Lastly, callout if you need a break during a roll-through, so that the rider in front can move forward instead.

SPR Italy Trip 2025 โ€” You may recall that we our Italy 2025 trip commencing in a few short weeks – 16 – 30 August. Now unfortunately, we’ve had someone withdraw due to injury. As a result, we have a vacancy for the trip. This is a unique opportunity for some great cycling in Italy and Switzerland.

So if you are interested, and have the space at relatively short notice, please get in touch with Carol via comdev@southperthrouleurs.com.au. All the costs are detailed below, and airfares are under $2,000 at the moment.

Juniors Ride โ€” I will be away with my family for a month and the official junior rides will resume on 9/Aug upon my return. During my absence I encourage you to continue riding with your kids.

Please find below some important appointments for racing during my absence I would like you to consider:

I also encourage you to commit for the Junior State Championship (road) on 30/Aug. Please check the details here. I will return in the beginning of August and I will have time to organise a couple of specific training sessions for the event. However, the children need to build up some stamina while I will be away.

From the Ride Coordinator โ€” Itโ€™s the start of the month so it is โ€œStep Up Saturday!โ€

Take this opportunity to see where your riding is at and STEP UP and have a go at riding with that next group above your usual Saturday ride.

Consistent communication(e.g. highlighting potholes) during the ride helps with group coordination and contributes to the safety of the group. Where two groups get caught together at a junction let the front group pull ahead and resist the temptation to jump across. This preserves the group size that was initiated at the start of the ride and reduces the chance of a larger group forming, which is difficult for other road users to navigate around.

Ben O’Connor Queen Stage Win! โ€” Huge result for Perth’s Ben O’Connor at the Tour de France with a stage win on the Queen stage last night. Kudos Ben!

Ben won the stage – Stage 19 to Col de La Loze – after breaking away from the leading group after the second big climb of the day. He ended up climbing the final 16km solo to take out the win.

AusCycling National Esports Series โ€” The National Esports Series gives AusCycling-affiliated clubs the opportunity to race and score points for their club. The series included six races, with the final race held last week. SPR put in a good showing, with some jostling for position with Peel, but kudos to PDCC who ended up as the top WA club after the final race.

From the Ride Coordinator โ€” It looks like a repeat of last weekend: a cold but dry Saturday and a very dubious Sunday – rain is expected mid ride.ย

On Saturday fast & main groups are doing Karrinyup. It has been at least a year since weโ€™ve done this one. Please review the route (and donโ€™t turn left at Scarbs Beach Rd!)

Weโ€™ll have to get our cycling thrills from the final weekend of the TdF. Perhaps re-watch the Queen stage? There are changes to the final stage this year. Also, the racing will continue next week with the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift starting this weekend!

From the Ride Coordinator โ€” Saturday looks like itโ€™ll be dry but cold. We may get lucky on Sunday and squeeze in a ride before the rain returns, but it might be windy.

There are reports that 8 hardy riders rode last Saturday. Their dedication is admirable; they must also love cleaning their bikes! That Perth sand loves the wet too and gets everywhere on the bike ๐Ÿ˜

From the Ride Coordinator โ€” Saturday looks like it will be a washout for both the EBR & the main rides. ๐Ÿ™

However Sunday is looking good if you fancy a hills ride or a social coffee ride that goes around the river. They all start at 7am from Coode St.

This weekโ€™s lesson from Le Tour: Donโ€™t half-wheel! If that rider in front of you deviates from their line, theyโ€™ll take out your front wheel and who knows how many riders will come down. Unlike at the tour, there is no instant medical assistance!

SPRโ€™s Tour of Margaret River 2025 โ€“ Update

SPRโ€™s participation in TOMR will be going ahead with arrangements the same as in recent years โ€“ managed or self-managed teams all staying at the Broadwater Resort in Busselton, price as per earlier communications. Registration is still open.

Following last yearโ€™s TOMR, the Committee and subcommittees reviewed the way sponsorships work within the club. After lengthy discussions, agreement was not reached, and the Race Subcommittee decided to step back from organising SPRโ€™s participation at TOMR. We respect this choice, as weโ€™re all volunteers. The Race Subcommittee will continue to lead all other racing activities with SPR.

Huge Kudos and thanks to Steve and the team for the significant contribution theyโ€™ve made to the SPR TOMR experience over many years.

More details have been provided in an email to members. If you have any questions, please reach out directly on president@southperthrouleurs.com.au or feedback@southperthrouleurs.com.au.

See you out on the bike.

There is a tricky part of the course where weโ€™ll need to cross High Road without traffic lights. With the help of the parents, we will cross in pairs.

The course is for more experienced riders. Beginners and younger riders are recommended to return after we have ridden the first 5km (before crossing High Rd).

We will meet at 11am in Shelley (at our usual spot here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/PEjTd9H7b9xrRKCE8)

From the Ride Coordinator โ€” Step Up Saturday this weekend! Have a go and see where you are at with your riding!

Be wary when riding through Cottesloe. There will be lots of pedestrians and cars looking to park or exit carparks. Take care at zebra crossings because people can & will step out in front of you. Communication is vital to avoid hazards and crashes so please repeat all calls up and down the bunch.

[ Short post today due to time limitations. I know there is a green podium from the weekend just gone (kudos!) which I will track down. Not to mention racing success for Sophia Sammons in Europe this past week. Stay dry and see you on the bike. Daniel ]

If you’re a member of SPR, or ride with us, get involved and have some input into the new Perth Entertainment and Sporting Precinct at Burswood Park! If you want more information see my earlier blog post here.

SPR Peaks Challenge 2026

Overview

Peaks Challenge is an epic endurance ride in the Victorian Alps, covering a distance of 230kms with over 4500m of climbing (https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/rides-and-events/peaks-challenge/).

A 13-hour cut-off time keeps you moving through the excellent feed stations and the whole event is superbly run from start to finish. The Victorian Alps provide a stunning vista for a great day in the saddle and weโ€™re looking to organise a trip across to this excellent event next year.

Of course, given the challenges faced on the course, familiarisation is key, so weโ€™re also organising a weekโ€™s training camp around the same area around 6th – 13th  December. This will be based in Bright, which is centrally located to ride all of the big climbs and just a great place to stay!

The training camp will be lead by SPR member David Morley and should be a great opportunity for anyone contemplating the Peaks themselves!!

For general guidance, the Camp will feature two riding groups, both looking to cover all three major peaks in Peaks Challenge (Tawonga Gap, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek), throughout the week, with surrounding link areas as well. There will be 3 main climbing days and three lighter days in between. Roughly speaking, climbing days are around 100-120km with approx. 2000m of climbing, with Group 1 aiming to ride at 25kph +/- 2kph and Group 2 at 22kph +/- 2kph (depending on conditions). Lighter days will be flatter and determined during the week, based on the needs of the groups. This is serious mountain terrain, with variable weather and long, challenging, climbs. Please do assess your suitability for this, before signing up!

Whilst these activities are not mutually exclusive, it is highly recommended that both are attended, particularly if this is your first time at Peaks Challenge.

At this stage, weโ€™re looking to gauge interest in (a) the pre-event training camp and (b) Peaks Challenge 2026. Once we have the level of interest, we will consider the best mode of accommodation and transport for both activities and provide more details to those registering an interest.

Racing this weekend โ€“ If you want to race, or get in on the action watching others race, read on.

1. <not this weekend>

2. X-Speed Junior Road Racing Series 1 (21/Jun)

3. WA Cyclocross 2025 Numbat Cup – Round 4 (Ladies’ Day) (29/Jun)

Juniors Ride โ€” This weekend we will have a third CX training session, run by myself with assistance from Tom and Oscar Barratt on Sunday (15/6/2025). The location is the same as last time: Garvey Park, Ascott. Session starts at 11am for roughly a hour, weather permitting.

From the Ride Coordinator โ€” Looks like Saturday may be the best day to ride this weekend. However, be aware of debris and slippery conditions.

We are happy to include juniors in our ride groups if accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are a few talented ones amongst us already.

PS: We love what you are doing with the Juniors programme, Giovanni, and love seeing the youngsters out & about in their SPR green ๐Ÿ’š

All of us can be like the cool kids, so weโ€™ll see you in green too!ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

Some reminders:

  • Carpark etiquette. Keep groups moving in the carpark. The start point of the ride, for every group, is at the top of the row.
  • Group etiquette. Should two groups come together, donโ€™t jump from one group to another. Make use of red lights to allow the gap to widen and create space!
