earlybird rides

the earlybird rides that we have put on lately have been pretty successful.  this morning there were about 15 or more riders that met at 5:30am to cut a lap of the river before the usual saturday ride.  now, some people use this as extra kms and some use it to get a ride in if they cannot make the usual 7:00am ride.  also the 5:30am tuesday and thursday rides are as popular as ever, with the tuesday ride often needing to be split in half to minimise the size on the road.

anyway, we will now put on a few more earlybird rides to cater for the need.  firstly, there will now be a monday and friday 5:30am ride starting from under the narrows and taking the usual tuesday ride route.  this is a standard tuesday pace ride with regroups as per usual.  secondly, we will also put on a sunday morning 5:30am ride from under the narrows.  this will follow the same route as the saturday earlybird ride as it will need to finish at coode st.  now you don’t have to use it as a “pre-ride” before the hills, but you can if you are after extra kms.

in all cases, if no-one else turns up, then you would have been riding by yourself anyway.  if others turn up then you will have someone to talk to.  the first few weeks of the tuesday ride, i was the only one to turn up, now we get about 60 riders.  from little things, big headaches grow.

i look forward to seeing you bright and early.  (you need lights to get to the start now).

  1. On Tuesdays I can’t make the ride due to the never ending bane of my cycling life – kids sporting commitments. However, I do manage to get in 90 min ride starting at Challenge Stadium at ~6 am. If anyone wants to join me for this ride – routes will need to be confirmed pending interest – please let me know via the comments page.

  2. Fantastic, I don’t think I will ever sleep in again, Monday’s and Friday’s (well every second week) used to be my sleep in days, not anymore! guess I’ll just have to go back to bed after the Early bird ride 😀

  3. Is anyone interested in maybe changing the route or the direction of this ride, just so that we all don’t get dizzy going around the river? Just a thought. If there is enough interest I will investigate a different yet circuitous (that means one that goes around in a circle) and safe route that is about the same distance as we currently do.

    1. Wouldn’t that (assuming you mean doing the reverse river ride) mean heading along Mounts Bay Road in (or close to) peak hour traffic? And riding into the sun along that stretch isn’t something I’d be keen on.

  4. Fair call, i was kind of thinking of using the public access path along Mts Bay, but you’re right that there’d be traffic either road or path-way.

  5. A good route for something different could be like the south street ride or something like that with a bit of undulations to mix it up a bit during the week?
maybe a ride down to jandicot or something

  6. i will see about some new routes for monday and friday. something to spice it up a bit, but they need to be easy to follow and safe.
