ride routes 4th & 5th dec

december has arrived.  summer has arrived.  the temperature has actually gone down.  something is going on there.  pretty much three weeks till christmas.  that is going to come along even quicker than i expect.  wonder what santa has in his sack this year.

breakfast – saturday.  after the ride.  $10 members, $15 non-members.  food, drink, raffle prizes, good company, bike weigh-in and generally more lycra than you should really allow in my backyard.  more info here.

memberships – i received a new membership list today.  we currently have 193 members.  lets see if we can crack 200 for the year.  we can then aim for 300 at the end of 2011.  for those that have been asking about the expiry date on their licence.  all race licences expire at the end of the calendar year.  the recreational licences are based on quarters so you basically get a year from when you joined.  however, if you want to upgrade to a race licence, you can still do it anyway.

movember – well it is now the second day of shave-cember and the razor was out as quick as a flash.  thank-you for all the donations as we managed to raise $1,190.

races – cyclemania classic this sunday.  we have a few people heading up for the last race of the season.

crit series – race 01 was a great success, so hopefully we see a bunch more of you guys at tech park for race 02 on the 12th dec.  there is a d grade race for those that haven’t raced before and a qualified coach rides along with you to give you some tips.  shaw won this race last week, so up to c grade for him.  it was a really good morning, so come along a support the club.  a new lot of volunteers needed.  share the load, guys.  i don’t want to see the same people helping out every week.

ride routes – breakfast this week so all the saturday rides will end up back at my place.  if you are not riding and still want to come to the breakfast, then send me an email and i can let you know where it is.

breakfast reminder

it is the most important meal of the day, so don’t forget it.  even worse if you forget the spr christmas breakfast.  this saturday after the ride.  add your name to the comments back on the original post if you are coming along.  we need to know final numbers by thursday so we can adjust the catering if needed.  riding, food, drink, prizes, lots of lycra, what more could you want for christmas.  be there.

cyclemania classic – 5th dec

the last road race of the season is coming up this weekend.  the cyclemania classic hosted by northern districts cc is on sunday 5th dec at carabooda.  entries close tuesday 11:59pm so you need to do it now.  there is a thru to c grade for men and an a grade women’s race as well.  this is the same circuit from earlier on in the year (peter clark classic) and we will have a full support tent on site so come along and have a race.

add your name to the comments so we know who is coming along.

more info on the flyer.

race map can be found here.

registration online here.

time trial helmets

if you are looking at doing time trials or triathlons in the future, you will want to try to get the best aerodynamical advantage that you can.  a time trial helmet can take vital seconds off your times so are a must when racing the clock.  there are very few tt helmets that have been passed by the australian standards, and you need to get an approved helmet to compete in time trials (triathlons have different rules).

anyway, as was alluded to by the previous post about helmet laws changing, torpedo7 have some tt helmets on special for a very good price.  $60 in fact.  there are 2 models the chrono and the speed demon.  a bunch of us bought the speed demon over a year ago for the very good price of $100, so the deal is even sweeter now.

my understanding (i.e. don’t rely on this in court) is that retailers can no longer sell the older standard helmets after 12th dec, but it is still ok to wear them…for now.

so if you are looking at going fast, grab this offer while it lasts.  click here.

ride routes 27th & 28th movember

it’s all about the numbers.  1 month till christmas.  9 days till the spr christmas breakfast.  2 weeks till the last road race of the year.  4 days till our first crit.  1 sponsor to go to finalise the new kit.  200 members by the end of 2010.

club crits – we are joining forces with the roues chaudes club to host a number of crits at technology park.  starting this sundayand then pretty much one per month until march.  we are running “a” thru to “d” grade, so if you want to have a go at racing, then come along to this.  the course is short so if you get dropped, then it is not like you have to ride ages to get back to the start.  there will be stacks of spr people down there for support, so we can help you out if it is your first time racing.  if you have a racing licence then it is just $10 entry.  if not then you will need to buy a day licence.  all cash on the day so you don’t need to pre register.  a bit more info can be found here.  we are providing volunteers for this event, so we need some more to get it going.  very basic thing like traffic management or line judging and you can “job share” if you want to race as well.  add your name to the comments if you are going to help out.  if we don’t get enough, we may start to volunteer people.  also, if people have a spare jersey, put your name  on it and bring it down so we can make sure all the spr people are in the club colours.  this is our first one of these so lets make it work.

christmas breakfast – we now have enough volunteers, so we now need to know if you are coming.  add your name to the comments if you are coming along on dec 4th.  food, drink, raffle prizes,

movember – less that a week to go. if you don’t donate, i will keep the sleazy mo for another month.   donate to the cause.

memberships – as you may have seen on an earlier post, we have started an earlybird drive to get people to either join or renew their licence.  prizes to be won so do it now.  thanks to shaw at netplus microcomputers.

ride routes – last week i put up a post to show where the different groups need to congregate before the rides.  i was told that it looked like a “go line” from a mine site where all the haul trucks park up before starting for the day.  probably not far off it, but at least you aren’t the size of a 2 story house with tyres that cost over $40,000 each.  anyway, the north island is the one closest to the river (considering we are in south perth which is south of the river) as some people were confused last week.  no sunday hills ride organised this week as the club crits are on.

saturday 27th movember – all rides start at coode st carpark at 7:00am

juniors – spr saturday 22.11km juniors (mt pleasant)

development group – spr saturday 35.48km (novice shelley)

transitional 1 & 2 – spr saturday 41.73km (canning vale reverse)

fast, main 1 & 2 – spr saturday 50.47km (hale rd reverse)

sunday 28th movember – all rides start at coode st carpark at 7:00am

no organised rides on due to club crits

spr kit – a tale of 2 jerseys

ok, so i haven’t really wanted to do this, but the options are available if we want.  the group seems to be split as to the merits of a black vs white kit.  hot vs cold.  safe vs unsafe.  i for one think the black kit looks good.  as for the heat factor, when someone comments “you look hot in that”, take it as a compliment.

the group also looks awesome when everyone is wearing the same kit.  when we get a good roll through happening in a cyclo-sportif and everyone is in the same kit, it really feels like a team no matter how crap we are.  when the bigger groups roll around the river and the majority are in the same kit, you really sit up and take notice as it shows some form of group unity.  remember all this when you make your comments.

so anyway, we are never going to please everyone, but there may be a compromise rather than everyone being told that they have to wear the same thing.  glenn parker south have two kits made up.  a black version and a white version.  we can do this if we get the numbers to support it.  basically it would work like this.  a white kit would be available in the following items – jersey, knicks/bibs, summer arms.  the black version would be available in the following items – jersey, knicks/bibs, vest, jacket, winter arms, knee warmers, sleeveless, skinsuits, trisuits & long sleeve jersey.  basically, the white kit would be the summer “fun in the sun” kit but the black kit would be the main kit.  this means that black will be the race kit if you are thinking of/intending to race in the future.  both carry the same sponsors and have the same basic design concept.  also remember the gloves and booties have been made to match the black kit (black hexagons).

so, comments please.

this is black
this is white

spr saturday starting grid

starting grid for saturday

to help things get organised on a saturday morning i would like for people to either congregate or move to these positions just before 7am.  this will help us see the size of the groups so we know if we need to split things further.  main 1 & 2 meet either side of the north island and T1 & T2 do the same on the south island (sounds very kiwi doesn’t it).  this also give ride leaders a good look at who is in the group and who can help out.

if you can organise into these groups early, then we can get underway early…as long as i am not late.

ride routes 20th & 21st movember

new toys for me this week.  after a couple of months of no bike computer, i am finally back to knowing how fast i am going…or not.  i also now can see my heart rate, cadence and power.  actually i can see about 10 things per page on the new garmin, which is way too much to take in at a glance while you are trying to hold a wheel.  what these data-less months have given me is a misaligned perception of speed.  this morning’s training ride was on mounts bay road doing what i thought was around 35kph but it turned out to be touching 50kph.  as we crossed a couple of rises near cott, i thought we were on about 20kph but it turned out to be 30kph.  not sure if this just means that i am fitter, or i just have a skewed sense of reality.  probably the latter.

track grand prix – a great night out to see some great track riders doing great things.  it’s great.  come along and support lisa and davina on the track against an international field.  more info here.

great perth bike ride – this sunday. if you aren’t doing it, avoid the river ride if you are heading out.  there are some crits held on riverside drive after the bike ride if you are looking for a race.

christmas breakfast – we now have enough volunteers, so we now need to know if you are coming.  add your name to the commentsif you are coming along on dec 4th.

movember – there are 5 of us looking like used car salesmen at the moment.  i personally have gone for the sleazy pool boy look – “i am here to clean the pool”.   donate to the cause.

memberships – as you may have seen on an earlier post, we have started an earlybird drive to get people to either join or renew their licence.  prizes to be won so do it now.  thanks to shaw at netplus microcomputers.

ride routes – splitting the groups before we kick off seems to have worked the last few weeks.  as such i will post a map showing where the different groups need to congregate before we set off, so we save a bit of time beforehand.

saturday 20th movember – all rides start at coode st carpark at 7:00am
